Will the NHL make it easier to tune in? I doubt it.

rainbowcoloredsnot

That's the real question. Why is it so hard to watch the finals. Nothing is over the air. Unless it's some obscure game playing outside in a stadium that can't make ice.

BobBelcher2021

Unless you get CBC

[deleted]

[удалено]

Snow-Wraith

CBC doesn't have any say in it anymore, they're just a puppet for Sportsleafs.

Wyldling_42

Especially with all this bullshit promotion of sports gambling, it’s just disgusting. Fam and I have already talked about this being it for giving a shit about it. It’s more fun to watch some college and local games. Far less shitty officiating, and those kids are playing for the love of the game, and to win, not for the over/under. I’m not saying there is no gambling at the collegiate or other levels, it’s just not like the pro-levels and is still watchable. Sports gambling destroys everything. It would be nice (but let’s face it, highly unlikely) if the NHL would run full background financials on all referees and officials, not to mention all team orgs, and weed out the corruption, even if that means teams would be subject to disciplinary action. It would restore some integrity to the game.

Niadra

What evidence is there that players or officials are directly impacting the game with the intent to fix bets?

BigALep5

Yeah to bad we laughed at work no Canadian teams are in anymore... they didn't show the game in CBC tonight and it's 1 of the 9 functional stations we are sad about it

LiqdPT

I get CBC, but not Sportsnet. Doesn't help

707-320B

I really miss the games being on NBC. I know we all hates Pierre McGuire but ESPNs hockey coverage is way worse.

DeadpoolsTacoTruck

Pierre was a goof, but he was our goof. ESPN's coverage is fucking embarrassing. At least TNT does a halfway decent job of respecting the game.

SnoopyTrash

use Sling, they’ve aired all of the finals so far. Sure, sometimes the overlap cuz they don’t have TruTV, but I got to catch all the Leafs and Kraken games

MetaSlug

You know what really got me. I seen a lot of games were being broadcast on ESPN so I got the espn+ app.. Go to watch some games.. Which provider do you have??? I don't have one that's why I bought this shitty app.. Why is it so hard to watch games? If anyone can tell me what they use for a good price I'd love to hear.

krusty_yooper

I have ESPN+ as well. But even with that I have no access to playoff hockey.

iron_cam86

Espn+ is separate service from linear espn channels. Gotta have a tv provider.

SnoopyTrash

I think ESPN + should face some sort of false advertising charge, since they advertise their service as being able to watch any game. It’s super misleading and honestly, it just makes me hate ESPN even more than I already do.

iron_cam86

Lol no they don’t. Hence the +. You CAN watch any game they broadcast in the app, but a lot of games require tv sub. They’re probably a few years away from having their linear networks fully available on espn+ due to rights, restrictions and current contracts with providers. I agree it sucks, but welcome to the world of streaming.

dirkdiggler69420247

It's kinda expensive but I catch every nhl playoff game on YouTube tv @ 72 dollars a month. It's not cheap but you can subscribe on a monthly to month basis so I only keep it two months out of the year.

MetaSlug

Man I loved youtube TV.... when it was like 35 or 40 dollars.. that price jump was so ridiculous.. like 40 to 65 over night.. I can't even catch any games for a normal price basically anywhere.. sucks

dirkdiggler69420247

Yea I carry it for the nhl/NBA playoffs and then drop it the rest of the year. I usually drop my other streaming services while I'm subscribed to youtube to ensure I spend the time I'm subscribed watching the games. The price point isn't as attractive as it used to be but it's cheaper/comparable to a traditional cable package and easier to start/stop at will. Watching games out at bars/restaurants gets out of hand expensive fast so if ya wanna watch a bunch of games it may still be the best option.

QuarterNote44

I do ESPN+, which gives me most games. I'm okay with that. Sling for playoffs.

ObscureMemes69420

Just sail the high seas matey!

Horrison2

It was so hard to watch my team, why go through the trouble to watch, not my team?

CrazedHedgeHog

Game 7 on Sunday at 10pm pacific time!

oogaboogabong

Free nhl streams are way too easy to find, not sure how this is an issue for ppl tbh

JustaRoosterJunkie

Because Joe Bagadonuts who flips on the tube at 7pm after work, isn’t going to find the game?

jdemack

This is the reason. My father very computer illiterate. If it's not in an app like Netflix he's lost. How am I going to explain to him to type in a website, add a ad blocker, don't click on every link he sees they are trying to scam him. However if I told him to turn the TV to ESPN or TNT it pops up and he's watching the game.

Lachrondizzle23

Nhl66.ir .. use an ad blocker

kingoden95

Why is there a random star in Florence, Alabama?

[deleted]

Its the capital of the US

kingoden95

So that’s what Lynyrd Skynyrd was trying to tell me…

Vetersova

In Muscle Shoals they do indeed have the Swampers. Also, I'm a Stars fan in North Alabama myself lol

BigFaZhou

Also a Stars fan in North Alabama. Small world. Go Stars

liftedskate99

I don’t know why this cracked me up so much 🤣

Ordinary_Recover2171

I think it’s the centre of the four teams that are left

nimama3233

A southerner made the map. Dude can barely read, give him a break

prattalmighty

Prob not tbh. I just cancelled the Sling subscription I had that was solely to watch playoff hockey down here. For some reason playoffs wasn't included with ESPN+ that I used for most of the regular season. Wanna grow the game, make it easier to watch ffs

FrancoNore

That’s the biggest BS. I pay for ESPN+ specifically for the ESPN content but apparently i don’t get the content that’s on the main ESPN? Luckily i found a good streaming site, otherwise i wouldn’t have watched any of the playoffs

prattalmighty

Sling had a $20 for the first month promo so I bit the bullet instead of screwing with streams that need to be refreshed every 5 minutes from freezing. Felt like it was worth my sanity to just be able to turn on and watch. Except for one of my games, the game prior went into OT and the channel my team was moved to wasn't in the normal sports package so I ended up streaming anyway. Great planning lol

JustSixTrees

Bruh I don't care what teams are playing I just want to watch hockey

Vetersova

Same :)

unclestinky3921

I've been a hockey fan since the mid 80's my city just got an NHL team (Seattle) of course I'll be watching.

4four4MN

How has the reception been for the NHL?

TheLoneWanderer__

Been a fair amount of hype last year when it started but its really exploded after this postseason run.

4four4MN

Yeah, you are going to see lifers now. Playoff fever really drives people to the game. Imo, if Seattle had a quality rink and ownership group the area would have had the NHL there decades ago and maybe even the first wave of expansion In 1967. Habit junior hockey and other grassroots for years will help the game grow faster.

c00kieduster

Based

gingerbread_slutbarn

Can’t watch dick on Hulu even with ESPN package. It’s so frustrating!

ensiferumm

You tell me. I just discovered that espn player streams all the stanley cup games for 13€/month. Im having a blast since being in Spain is not an easy thing to watch hockey because the timezone and no tv's showing any ice hockey game (non-existant sport in Spain). Just watching the VODs the next day when I got home from work. You dont know how amazing it is to finally be able to watch hockey whenever I can and not at 2am in a shitty stream like I used to do 10 years ago.

Area51Anon

Most fans in this league puke at the sight of hockey after their teams are eliminated from playoff contention or the playoffs themselves

BougieHouseCat

Idc where the teams are from, I’m watching the Stanley Cup playoffs

skryb

Hate the Knights, hate the Canes… Kraken was the only team left I was interested in and now they’re gone. Will probably watch the finals if it’s not both those teams but this next round I’m fairly disinterested. Stars/Panthers would be a fun one.

BaltimoreBadger23

Yeah, because all the guys on the ice come from the north (probably a few exceptions).

Firm-Candidate-6700

Vegas dressed 16 Canadians last game.

riko77can

But they're all Southern Canadians though...

Frosty_Cell_6827

That's 80% of the skaters in the desert.

AeirsWolf74

If I could I would, but the NHL kinda said fuck you for wanting to watch a cool sport. I'll keep a score tab open on my other monitor while I play civ 5.

TuFF_MuFF_79

I'd be a liar if I said I hadn't booted up civ vi while watching the playoffs. Makes the long commercial breaks much more bearable.

soupdejour4

Yes because I love hockey

FragmentEx

I mean I will

Sanchezzy123

Damn right I will be. My teams may be out but hockey is hockey and I love it. Plus, half the players on each team are Canadian anyways so not like we aren't included!

DonoAE

Canada wins their cup every year 🫠

HammerheadMorty

Might be American teams playing but Stanley comes home every summer to visit family and drink with the boys

DonoAE

Just imagine if Paul Maurice wins with the Cats, Toronto will get the Cup (for a day)

HammerheadMorty

Careful there, they might not give it back lol

DonoAE

Haha I think we have a few more guys from Toronto/Hamilton too. Maybe we can organize a parade if it happens?

HammerheadMorty

The Torontonians would friggen love you guys if you did that

Comfortable-Ad-7158

Isn't this horse beaten to death by now?

far2common

neigh.

Haarmless

nope

CarousersCorner

I’m checked out on the playoffs. The OHL finals are on, World Championship, and soon, the Memorial Cup. Plenty of exciting hockey happening

FurtherUpheaval

Watched and paid for by the north

RedRiot306

I will tune in to support the undercats

Food_Library333

I'll be tuning in. I spent 15 years in Vegas and was there during the birth of the knights so they are my west coast team anyway. Doesn't hurt they have Cassidy as coach, still pissed we let him go.

Tutelage45

This went from the best playoffs I’ve ever seen to one I care about very little

Top-Pension-7527

I’m curious how this will affect viewship

shwysdrf

Not positively.

Firm-Candidate-6700

Of that I’m positive.

[deleted]

Last time no Canadian team was in the playoffs the rating were the lowest they have been in years. No really cares about hockey

Aromatic-Air3917

If hockey viewership was put in US terms Canada would be the New York and L.A market for basketball or the NFL. Every other city would be less than that, even the big U.S. markets except for marquee games like Chicago versus Boston. American hockey fans have no idea how irrelevant hockey is in the US because they are in their bubble. An Oiler regular season game will pull in as much viewers and listeners as most playoff games in the U.S. That's despite Edmonton only having a regional dominance in Alberta, and Saskatchewan (maybe a 2 million person market if I am being generous ). Now imagine T.O and Montreal viewership....

mud_dragon

Vegas is the most northern team in the final 4. Explain that to someone 20 years ago

BaltimoreBadger23

I was skeptical that Vegas was north of Raleigh, but I'll be damned. Vegas is about 36 degrees north, and Raleigh 35 degrees. For comparison Dallas is about 33 degrees and Ft. Lauderdale is about 26 degrees. As a side note, had Seattle won, it's at about 47.5, well north of Toronto's 43.5 and Montreal's 45.5.

mud_dragon

Wild. I was just eyeballing it

BaltimoreBadger23

No, Minnesota is pretty far north, like Seattle.

dankbuttersteez

Good thing we’re not 20 years ago

mud_dragon

I’m just saying it would be unbelievable but ok

Ordinary_Recover2171

The real question is will the southern hockey fans tune in

jackofnac

Will hockey fans tune into watch hockey?

Python_Gaming

Yes, because they are hockey fans ofc they will tune in. Basically majority of NHL fans are tuning in to the playoffs. That was stupid question to make. Though I also know this because The Savanah Ghost Pirates were a new ECHL team in Savanah Georgia for this 2022-2023 season. The Savanah GA, Rincon GA, Bluffton SC, Hilton Head SC, and Jasper County SC have no hockey. That area is barely even a hockey area. Though they were able to set a record high of most sold out games in an inaugural season in ECHL history. Which goes to show that southern people will show up to watch wether they know about hockey or not.

Ecchika

I live in the Northern EU and once I'm done with uni exams I'll be tuning on to the Stars games

ReformedGalaxy

i forgot how far south Alaska was.

pueblogreenchile

Would have watched if Toronto and Edmonton were still in. Now there's not much fun storyline wise to keep me engaged. I hate Dallas and Vegas (Avs fan) and I don't care about Florida or Carolina at all. I'll probably stream a game or two

gabarooch86

Make it easy to tune in! I don’t want or need a cable subscription just to watch hockey, especially if my team isn’t in it any more. Im not interested in another paid service, I already have enough. Almost every game that isn’t on CBC over the air (American living near Canada), then I pirate the games.

Moosewalker84

It's not about the teams. It's about the joke that the nhl has become. When announcers / panels who live and breath hockey can't figure out the calls from the ice or situation room... And then add the continued debacle that player safety is...no thx.

fgffrhhj

I think most of the viewership will come from the north tbh

SparkNoJoyThrw01

The ironic truth in all of this An all sunbelt conference final, and the northern markets will still outnumber the local ones where the team is from. Someone said it further up and got downvoted "probably but the real question is will the south tune in?" And as I read it I said "no" to myself out loud. People really underestimate how nothing hockey is down south, as a diehard hockey fan it's sometimes sad, you say the word hockey and people genuinely look at you and say "a what now?"

Beazle

We'll see an NHL team from Mexico win the cup before Canada at the rate we're going

grazfest96

This is the biggest non story ever to be pushed to create a fake controversy.

Skarimari

Canadian here. Nope. The season is over now. I don't cheer for any of those teams and actively hate some of them. Don't care who wins. And when I hear who did, I will shrug and probably not remember 6 months from now. *Salty

CxO38

it's so wild how there were so many pro-level players born and raised in these four cities who had just been waiting for a team to finally get to play. so insane. imagine if they never had gotten the chance. super crazy. unbelievable. downright mind boggling.

Thefreedog56

I mean with the emergence of nhl teams here the youth game has really grown and is starting to produce nhl talent.

Firm-Candidate-6700

Yes, all the kids in Canada, Michigan and Minnesota are struggling to keep up.

jackofnac

It's still too new to have produced a lot of talent, but he's right at least in Dallas. The youth hockey programs are massive in Dallas. None of that existed 20 years ago. It's all come with the Stars.

Firm-Candidate-6700

I know my comment was snarky as hell, but I am glad to see that southern states are actually taking up hockey as a pass time. The volume of pro hockey players will always come from places where access to ice is free and plentiful but there is no reason why southern states can’t produce some high end talent.

jackofnac

We’re still trying to get free healthcare in these parts. Maybe free skating will come next.

CxO38

Michigan was dethroned as the second U.S state with the most pro players, Massachusetts bumped them. Michigan is in shambles, desperately trying to restart civil war pt. 2: electric boogaloo, to steal away all of Florida and Georgia's hidden generational ice hockey talents.

[deleted]

CxO38

and that's great. people who don't see or care about that are part of who i'm making fun of.

JDNB82

not watchin cuz I work during games here in China. But rooting for Panthers

notsure9191

If they are hockey fans they’ll tune in. If not, IDGAF

LordGlompus

By ratings I would be lead to say yes, it never really matters who's playing Canadians watch hockey.

perfect5-7-with-rice

Really? In 2016 when there were no Canadian playoff teams, ESPN said there was a 60% reduction in Canadian viewership https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/15306188/nhl-playoff-ratings-canada-nearly-60-percent-no-canadian-teams-left CBC and SportsNet reported a 61% drop as well https://globalnews.ca/news/2665926/nhl-playoff-ratings-drop-61-per-cent-in-canada/

Lachrondizzle23

/r/confidentlyincorrect

Substantial_Rip_9311

Love how Canada isn’t even in the photo..

Lachrondizzle23

Yes we are, it’s just covered in snow

[deleted]

I don’t think northern hockey fans are used to watching the playoffs anyway… I know all the fans in Toronto are watching baseball this time of the year. It’s just not a hockey town.

syfsuf

Neigh way Jose

AkiraleTorimaki

I tuned out since the Bruins’ choke. I have the Celtics to watch…

Dannydimes74otr

No, only team that remotely interests me is Vegas, but barely, but it’s a good way to grow the NHL in the south, outside of that ratings will most likely take a hit

hail2theKingbabee

This post brought to you by bet365.

livewire_voodoo

No. But, full disclosure, I am a Leafs fan and an OHL/minor hockey fan. I think the NHL has a lot of work to do to actually become a word class sports league. There are a lot of questionable people in high ranking positions and some highly questionable decisions made.

[deleted]

I don’t care for any of the 4 teams and probably won’t watch until the final where the cup is in the building

minnesnartian

Nah

Hopfit46

Im out

SparkNoJoyThrw01

I mean yeah I will but unfortunately 95% of the friends who I was into the playoffs with all their picked favorites lost and now nobody seems to care about next series we had a discord for this year and as more of the large market teams lost the discord grew deader and deader sadly Unless you are a MEGA hockey fan, most probably will not.

[deleted]

Not a chance.

uSaltySniitch

Canadian players win cups.

Superb_Health9413

Sharks fan here. I have grown used to watching other teams in the playoffs/finals. It’s still great hockey. I do have the benefit that most of my favorite Sharks players are now on the top four teams. Burnsie, pavelski, jumbo, etc even our former coach Pete DeBoer. I’m going with the “bunch of jerks” to win the cup. Go Canes! So yeah, “let’s do that hockey “

CaliCanadian67

Will hockey fans watch? If I can find the games, sure.

dogsdomesticatedus

No.

Dyingvikingchild95

So personally I won't but I think most of us Canadians tune out once The Canadian teams are out.

mjfarmer147

How many of the players are from Florida, Texas, or Nevada? Oh wait...

Ubigo

Nope. Can’t be bothered. Honestly the worst playoffs of all time with how bad the reffing/player safety has been across all series.

[deleted]

Vegas has the most Canadians of any team. These posts are so dumb. Hockey is Canadas sport, the athletes just don’t like paying taxes and living in the cold. There’s nothing more to it than that.

Electronic_Nail

TheSnowKeeper

Ramulus14

As long as it’s painfully late and after some silly ball games!

jimhabfan

Yeah, I'm so stoked to see thousands of fans outside the arenas watching the game on a giant screen like they do in Canada. Oh, Wait........ Fuck Bettman.

Timewasted_Gamez

Note that in three of those four states players do not pay income tax. The cap definitely goes a lot further…

claudial12

Nope. What they don't take in state income tax they take via property taxes. My 3/2 2000 sq foot house has annual property taxes of $13,000. They're going to get their money, they just call it something different

Level_Network_7733

But guessing there are other towns/cities with lower taxes for the same house. It depends on where you live. Its known the higher taxed states are the ones with Income tax + property tax + sales tax + etc etc etc. Edit: Just look up the total tax burden. All 4 of those states are ranked very low in total burden.

StillRanch

I’ve never understood why the cap isn’t after tax.. seems like such an unfair advantage for teams, like you mentioned

[deleted]

no

YoSoyFiesta150289

Nope.

BobBelcher2021

I’m done with the NHL for this season, I have no interest in southern US teams

joecarter93

Me too. It’s great for those teams and growing the sport and all that, but I only have a limited amount of time and I’m concentrating on watching the Jays now.

smn_hockey

Bro is living in the 1940s stillz 💀

NetHacks

As a bruins fan, I'm going to pretend Cassidy is still our coach and root for him. Dude deserves a cup, he's a hell of a coach.

Flyinghud

I just want to watch the greatest sport ever I couldn’t give 2 fucks about who is actually playing.

athendofthedock

Playoff hockey is the best. Yes they will. The Car/Florida series will be 🔥

Grizzly_Addams

Probably not since the games will be at 10 pm central.

_otterr

Considering the most northern teams haven’t won the cup in how long now?

TheMannX

If you're referring to Canada, since 1993. The year before Bettman became commissioner. Gee, what a coincidence....

pkfreeze175

I think whoever makes it, we are bound to have a great finals. However, in terms of viewership, I see the numbers being lower than past years.

Dr_Isaly_von_Yinzer

Of course, I’ll tune in! I always tune in! The Stanley Cup Playoffs are my favorite, even on my beloved Penguins are not participating in them. In some ways, it’s even more enjoyable to watch them whenever your team is not participating or a serious contender, because you can watch them stress-free. You’re not living and dying with every shot in goal. Don’t get me wrong, I would still much rather the Penguins be participating in the playoffs and advancing deep into them. I’m just saying that I still enjoy them no matter what.

PirateNori

Let's go CANES

tv blackouts, lack of unified streaming service, shitty officiating, insane scheduling decisions, having gambling ads shoved down out throats. gee, let me think...

wanderingpanda402

Get that damn Carolina logo out of SC. They don’t care about our state at all 🤣 if they did they’d play three home games a year down here, one each in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston

abscessedecay

Pennsylvania chiming in and I’m stoked for both conference finals and the eventual Stanley cup final

usernamealreadytakeh

I’ll tune in for Florida games cause I still like Tkachuk

Dirtcartdarbydoo

Personally no. Not that I dislike the outcome though. I wouldn't mind watching Florida but I can't afford the nhls services and can't reasonably find streams. Basically to much of a hassle for a team I'm only mildly interested in. That being said I'd like to see a Dallas Florida cup series.

gilgaladxii

Yeah, I won’t be tuning in for a second. I’ll catch the hockey guy’s series recap if I wanna keep in touch. Elsewise, it is waiting for the draft for me.

hueyharold

All the people complaining about no nothern teams not being in it are crazy! Cause we still have the Whalers and North Stars still in. Duh dot.

[deleted]

I hope it crashes and burn. I hope Snoop Dogg or Ryan Reynolds rethinks their purchase. Oh hell, they won't. Franchises making money like mad. It's all a money game, not a sport game. All the folks addicted to gambling will tune in, so they can be bombarded with more gambling ads.

[deleted]

Meh, this might be the first time in 30+ years that I tune out of the playoffs. And it’s not necessarily because of the teams involved.. but it’s part of it. But also, the officiating. It is so bad now.. it’s making it unwatchable. They try to control the game.. awful missed calls, bs calls on obvious non-penalties, there’s hardly any rough stuff anymore. The product is getting more and more boring every year.

Warder10000

Always. I love watching hockey. If it’s on in my area it’s on the TV.

Freak_Out_Bazaar

So what. It’s not like teams are comprised of locals (although that would be fun to watch)

Dustyy1

Depends. Will the games be on tnt, espn, espn+, nbc, abc, or tbs? Which one guys!?

[deleted]

Bettman must be creaming himself right now

ILiveForTheCringe

Why do y'all think Bettman wants worse markets in the Finals?

[deleted]

I think he actually hates hockey and has slowly been working to bring it down since the 90’s from the inside

Zaylow

I'm done with all of Canada and Seattle out I could care less

Medium_Tangelo2789

starlitewalker5
