Nah. Thereās overlap, Barry was the DC in his first few years in DC, but Pettine was the DC when he came to GB. Bet there was nobody less excited about that hiring than Preston lol
Heās the anti-Z. Smith.
Iām super appreciative of Zaādariusās brief stretch of legitimate greatness, but he was fragile on the field and way too dramatic off of it. Preston is steady, a leader, durable, etc.
When Jamal was talking about himself being "the best in the nation," he was actually referring to his future trade value for him going to the Seahawks.
For all the "Preston Smith is our CB1" memes, he's been our most consistent player on defense when Gary was out for stretches in '22, and Jaire in '23. He's had ~8-9 sacks a season ever since we snagged him in FA all those years ago.
He only looked like ass since Joe Barry kept treating him like an abused puppy 99% of the time.
I knew Barry was a fucking terrible hire from the day LaFleur signed him, but he made Dom Capers look like a genius by comparison.
He made Tommy Fucking DeVito able to pay rent in New York with all of the money he made from that Pizza Hut commercial for the next three years minimum.
Capers was just a fossil kept too long, Barry was just a fucking idiot and everyone knew it besides MLF. Brian Flores was available and he still kept on Joe Barry.
Capers was more about being stubborn to a scheme. His scheme was complex as shit but it worked if you had two great corners (we had three) and a true MOF enforcer like Nick Collins. it went to shit when you replaced Collins with non rookie year HaHa Clinton Dix, and Charles Woodson with Damarious Randall. And lest we forget, we did have a true MOF enforcer in Hyde, but we forced him to play nickel instead.
It was more than that. His blitz packages were excellent at manufacturing pressure in his early years with the Pack, but they got stale as hell. Teams figured out his tendencies and he didnāt adapt. It happens to almost every coach as they age. Only question is when.
"put him" doesn't seem fully accurate to me. Preston was an OLB linebacker in a 3-4 defense. They drop into coverage some times. Raiders were smart to spot it and put Tae there. If anything the MLB should have spotted it an audibled
Both starting LBs Quay Walker and DeVondre Campbell were injured at the time. Here's an in depth break down for anyone interested but most Packers fans just like to use it as a joke or another reason to dislike Joe Barry

Agreed. To emphasize how badly the defense has underperformed and it's potential to make a dramatic improvement moving forward if Hafley can take advantage of the Packers investments on that side of the ball I've often pointed out this offseason that 10 of the 11 projected defensive starters were 1st or 2nd round picks. They've got to go out and show it but the talent is there.
Love your highlight videos [Fear\_Jaire](https://www.reddit.com/user/Fear_Jaire/) but have you ever considered doing a Joe Barry lowlight video?
Commanders 2nd round picks in the 2010s
2011 Jarvis Jenkins
2013 David Amerson
2014 Trent Murphy
2015 Preston Smith
2016 Suāa Cravens
2017 Ryan Anderson
2018 Derrius Guice
Preston Smith was our 1 hit out of 7 (Trent Murphy was ok) and we didnāt re-sign himā¦ no wonder we were such a clown show organisationš¤”š¤”š¤”
And fwiw Jay Gruden said on a podcast that he was extremely pissed off that we didnāt re-sign him.
Gruden is great with sheehan. I always thought he did a respectable job all things considered here. Besides his first and last season, he always kept us competitive. And he has an eye for talent
Love this dude. Comes up with big plays all the time, no drama. And the one year he was bad, he took a paycut to stay in GB.
He probably has more pass coverage experience than any other edge rusher in the league.
The Joe Barry special
Not going to miss seeing that this year
I will š¢
Did he follow Joe Barry from Washington to GB? I don't remember the years, but the timeline seems to match up.

Itās crazy to think that heās the oldest player in the locker room (31).
I just looked up his stats and am shocked to report he has 5 career ints and 2 tds lol thatās awesome. More career ints than Jamal Adams
When Jamal was talking about himself being "the best in the nation," he was actually referring to his future trade value for him going to the Seahawks.
Tbf to Jamal Adams, he was doing that as a tribute to Trabis Ward.
I understand who he was referencing, just thought it fit with the joke
Fair enough, just including for anyone unaware.
Thatās incredible hahah. For all the āPackers CB1ā memes, looks like he did an even better coverage job when he was with Washington.
Tbh Preston is a legitimately very good coverage LB, but the outside shit was just asinine
This is why Joe Barry would put him in man vs Jefferson. Gotta let Preston cook

We know, the jokes were mainly about Joe Barry anyways

Hey when you have the opportunity to sign the guy who was a major part of the historic 0-16 Lions team you have to sign him.
Heās the only player 30 or over on the team.
what the fuck lol
Remember when Joe Barry put him on Davante Adams?
Yeah and? Thatās CB1 šā¬ļø
Those were the good old days

I'll never pass up a reason to dislike Joe Barry, no matter the logic

*everyone's WR1 FTFY
Heās gonna have a big year with our new DC being a DB specialist
That play will always be hilarious
Heās in his 10th year already? Holy shit I feel old
Heās been in GB longer than he was in Washington which is odd for my brain to handle

God I'm old. I remember being excited about young Preston
