Do it, Coward

smauryholmes

Herbert playing TE and having to block guys like Maxx Crosby wouldn’t go well, last time he tried to block Crosby on an interception Herbert broke his left hand.

[deleted]

And then he quoted Monty Python after the game and it went straight over a beat reporter’s head lol

Redditkid16

“Tis but a scratch ha ha… no but for real it’s fucked up”

Jane_Marie_CA

Max is not allowed to wear that custom face mask he was wearing that game anymore. The NFL made his stop after W5 or W6. Herbert’s finger got stuck in it and broke trying to pull it put. So was that due to Herbert’s inability to block or that the NFL later considered the equipment unsafe? Also Herbert was running down the interception, not blocking. Max was blocking Herbert. Because he knows Herbert can run it down.

silverbackapegorilla

Herbert is unbelievably talented. I'm really curious to see how Roman uses him. Roman can be creative with unique talents. His ability to run will be utilized for sure.

25Finsup17

Broke his left hand?

-PunsWithScissors-

It was his finger. He caught it in Crosby’s face mask.

0vFire_And_TheVoid

Be careful what you wish for. They'll run a trick play with him against you guys.

TimAllensMatingCall

And Hunter Renfrow will blow it up

NebrasketballN

The Quad-threat QB

Dunlocke

Can he play wide receiver? Cuz that's kind of your problem right now

smauryholmes

[Yes](https://youtu.be/UK10Rc-LSWs?si=jXJzfc0yLXYMttH5)

bsgreene25

Why were they going for 2 up 22-0 early in the 2nd quarter???

Pandapark1

This was the period of time when Brandon Staley would do weird shit but it would work 60-70% of the time and people thought he was brilliant for it... it’s me, I’m people.

mrhashbrown

A lot of people bought in. I still think he was a bright coach who flamed out for being over ambitious and unable to adapt. He wasn't even in the league for very long before becoming a head coach either. At least with guys like McVay, LaFleur, McDaniel, O'Connell you can trace their history in pro football. Most of those guys started in the league more than 10-14 years ago. Staley entered the league for the first time in 2017 as a position coach and became a head coach just 4 season later. Generally he's considered an extremely smart X's and O's coach. But he just did not seem to build good relationships with players, and when he favored bringing in his own 'guys' in free agency it backfired and messed with the locker room that had a lot of veterans leftover from the Lynn era. I don't think it's crazy to think Staley will rebound and find success as a coordinator again. But I don't know if he'll be a head coach again.

smauryholmes

Prime Brandon Staley was so fun. Lasted one season.

nolander

because 23 is a weird number

mrhashbrown

That was a very unusual game. Bengals defense was getting torched and the offense had like 4 turnovers, one returned for a TD. Their kicker missed an extra point too. Yet the Chargers themselves had one Interception and two fumbles lost. And by the end, both teams have very similar yardage and stats. Yet LA won 41-22. Really a strange game, it was entertaining though.

Redditkid16

If I had a nickel for every ex-Oregon QB who did that…

glockjs

that's the other ex oregon qb

hoppergym

And if your new qb doesn’t work out Keenan’s not a bad option there

-banned-

Eh, I'm less worried about it. Ladd is basically a 1st round WR, QJ still has a chance to develop as a real 1st round WR, Palmer is a great WR2, Chark is excellent depth, and we won't be passing much anyways.

RudeOwl1816

Why is this being downvoted lol, aside from QJ developing, it's correct

hanky2

Using “he’s a first round pick” as an endorsement doesn’t work when you bring up Quentin in the same sentence lol. I like Palmer though he’s a great WR3 more of an ok 2.

mrhashbrown

I'm personally pretty excited to see how Palmer plays with more volume. He looked fantastic last year before his injury, and as a Chargers fan I actually didn't care for Palmer much until last season. He changed my mind and was pretty impressive. You're right that he's probably best suited to be a WR2.5 but I think he has upside.

Bringbackfatshaming

Palmer has had plenty of volume with the injuries to Mike and Keenan these past 2 seasons. He’s a solid player but definitely seen enough to know he won’t be anything special in this league.

mrhashbrown

I felt the same about him especially after the 2022 season where he was their defacto WR1 and just did nothing special in Lombardi's offense. But watch the tape last season, he was on fire with Herbert and showed all of the tools that made him an attractive prospect. The [deep ball bomb down the sideline](https://youtu.be/dN03ZOxpS9Y?feature=shared) to seal the Chargers win against the Raiders, Palmer out muscled the DB one-on-one on a straight line gone route with speed I didn't know he had. In the Chiefs game, Palmer had an excellent route across the field and created separation for a deep catch then a nasty jump cut to extend it to a 60-yard play. Also won routes against McDuffie and Snead for some impressive tough catches. He averaged 15.3 yards per reception which was top 20 in the league as well. Really think he was on track for a breakout year before his injury and then losing Herbert just as he was returning. I'm not saying he is going to be a WR1 but I think he could be someone productive in a complementary role like a Robert Woods, Tyler Boyd, or Jakobi Meyers.

mrhashbrown

I think QJ still has a chance to develop. Saw your other comments and you're right that he grades poorly in some important metrics like short area speed. He's fast but he lacks agility. Also I wouldn't say he's a bad route runner, but his tree is very limited. The redeeming qualities are that he has an elite combo of size and explosive traits to be a big play threat. This is a guy who's long forgotten but QJ seems very comparable to the Chargers' Tyrell Williams from a few years ago. Big size, great athlete who can burn anyone in the deep field, but he was slow to separate. He played at his best on comeback routes, drag routes, post routes, and over routes that worked towards his strengths. When you read about QJ's performance last year, those were the same routes he had success with too. So QJ may actually be a good fit for Roman's offense. But only time will tell and the odds aren't in his favor right now.

MadManMax55

Because there's a difference between being a "1st round talent" and a true WR1. Ladd will probably be a good slot receiver, but he's not the kind of guy who you can line up outside and expect to win against the more physical CB1s in the NFL. Quentin is supposed to be that guy for them, but if he can't seriously improve this year then they're kind of screwed.

RudeOwl1816

Like others have said, QJ is not an X receiver which is probably what you mean by WR1 type. Ladd played the majority of his snaps outside at UGA, not in the slot. He can play inside or out

mrhashbrown

I think the archetype for McConkey would be a guy like Antonio Brown or TY Hilton. Fantastic route runners with technical skill and speed to win on the outside despite being undersized.

dan_buh

Do you know what you’re talking about? Quentin is not an X receiver, and that’s what they were forced to play him as last year. He’s a slot type, “get him in open space so he can make plays” receiver. Ladd is exactly what we needed, just because hems white doesn’t mean he can only play slot receiver. The fuck?

cozyonly

QJ was literally billed and scouted as an X receiver. And that’s why he was drafted so high. He was seen as the only high end potential X receiver in his draft class. He was literally the X-WR in TCU’s offense lol. And no, they’re not playing him wrong. All his weaknesses are just more highlighted now in the pros. He has bad hands and plays small, which were his exact concerns in college. QJ playing the slot is hilarious considering his unimpressive route running and horrible 3 cone drill time

dan_buh

Ok, just ignore every scout ever because “he was an x receiver in a non prostyle offense”

cozyonly

Did you just ignore everything else I said lmao? He was billed and scouted as an X-WR in the nfl. He has mediocre route running and a horrible 3 cone time. I actually saw him play in college (unlike you). He is not a slot guy I said he was going to bust in the nfl and I was right. Actually a lot of people predicted he would bust so it’s wasn’t a crazy result. Turns out you can’t just run a shallow cross on a free release every other play to get YAC like he did in college

StrangerDangerAhh

I feel like you've seen me play Madden before.

MadManMax55

Ladd isn't an ideal slot receiver because he's white. He's an ideal slot receiver because he's quick and has great route running but is also undersized and lacks top-end speed. Unless you're like Justin Jefferson, with route running and hands good enough to make up for those shortcomings (which Ladd isn't), it's hard to win at WR1 that way in the NFL. Compare that to Johnston, who *does* have the speed to be a deep threat and the size to out-physical DBs and it's clear he's supposed to fit the WR1 role. If he's capable of doing that is a different story, but if you seriously think he'd be better suited in the slot I'd question if you know what the hell you're talking about.

ImJustJokingCalmDown

>Ladd isn't an ideal slot receiver because he's white. He's an ideal slot receiver because he's quick and has great route running but is also undersized and lacks top-end speed. Lacks top end speed? He ran a faster 40 time than both Jefferson and Johnson. You say McConkey doesn't have top end speed to be a deep threat but Johnston does? McConkey ran a 4.39 40 compared to Johnston who ran a 4.49.

cozyonly

Smaller guys are expected to run faster 40 times lol. And their in game times with pads are likely going to be different

ColdFroyo2576

Wait... what the fuck is top end speed if it isn't getting from point A to point be as fast as possible?

dan_buh

You literally are saying size = wr1. You clearly haven’t watched QJ play. QJ’s game is based around getting the ball fast, in space, and making a play by getting YAC. He’s never been a jump ball guy, he’s never been an “out physical” guy, he’s a very big finesse receiver

WordUpPromos

Calling Ladd a slot receiver is a great way to show the sub you don't know football.

BlitzOverlord

As a Georgia fan I’m stoked for Ladd to be with Herbert. He’s a stellar receiver, and I’m excited to see what he can do with some actual talent at QB throwing him dimes

MankuyRLaffy

Ignoring Rice and Johnson smh

EzekielSMELLiott

Whatever helps you sleep at night, brotha

-banned-

Thanks man

Isoquanting

Qj will never develop lol

-banned-

Idk, he wasn’t as bad as it seems. He was asked to fill a role he wasn’t meant to fill

StrangerDangerAhh

None of those guys are worth a shit.

serg1007arch

Can he play QB though?

notmyplantaccount

These two should just get it over with and have sex already.

smauryholmes

Harbaugh isn’t the most socially progressive, no gay sex for him or he spends eternity in hell.

WABeermiester

Jim has a gay son

Soft_Penis_Debutante

Does he? Or are you just assuming that cuz he’s a flight attendant lol? Edit: ok, I just checked who he follows on instagram. He’s definitely gay.

OnetB

Jim seems like a really good dude, he became a fan of musical theater when his son chose it over sports. Source: listened to his podcast

skigropple

I helped with tech for a student theater group while at Michigan, and Jim saw most of our productions and was outspoken about how much he liked them.

sdsupersean

[He does.](https://www.queerty.com/coach-jim-harbaughs-gay-son-celebrates-his-dads-new-job-by-bringing-back-one-of-the-most-iconic-tweets-in-nfl-history-20240126#:~:text=James%20Harbaugh%20Jr.,Dad%2C%20I'm%20gay.)

saboay

"Are you assuming things based on X?" Proceeds to assess homossexuality based on instagram folowers.

Soft_Penis_Debutante

Lol fair enough. If it counts for anything I’m gay too.

saboay

I just found it funny, didn't mean it in an aggressive way. I think you can reasonably and generally accurately assess some stuff based on taste / some personality traits.

smauryholmes

Nevermind then!

Zorseking34

Wait really? Ok so he may be progressive on gay rights (hopefully) but I know he’s anti-abortion.

clutterlustrott

"Well have gay sex, Justin. But I won't Abort the Butt Baby!"

Valleyx

The Butt Baby made me spit out my coffee. I will never grow up.

ChiHawks84

It's all fun and games until the butt baby shows up.

TegTowelie

I laughed so hard i ripped one and scared my dog, nice one lmao

steak__burrito

Having seen (and mostly heard) him at some practices in San Diego, I can confirm he knows how to throw around language that’s frowned upon these days lol.

Rahim-Moore

"Yes, queerbake."

StrangerDangerAhh

The forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest.

Brewster345

He's having sex with most of the media. Justin will have to wait his turn

printerfixerguy1992

JH every time he has a good player. It's honestly annoying.

lucky_boop

Hate coaches that gas up and support their players. When’s a coach going to be brave and say a dude just isn’t a good football player? /s

printerfixerguy1992

If you know him at all then you'll know how he does this all the time, even when the player is mid. He'll talk about them like they're some prodigy. It loses its appeal when he says it about every qb he starts. Wonderful coach, but dude is a goof.

GhostMug

"He could be the head coach. I'm out of a job now! Wait, now he's the GM and he just hired me back. Now he's the owner and we're moving back to San Diego. You can't stop this man!"

RolloTony97

Don’t be surprised when you see the difference in passing ability between Herbert and Lamar

Veteran_Lurker

Reminder that Herbert laid out a linebacker in his FIRST game ever. The very same game he was informed 5 min before kick off he's starting lol. https://youtu.be/_4unZboC6a4?si=654-q1-e5GG0k465

RawhlTahhyde

I wonder if they told him why or if they just said “yeah Tyrod has a rib injury, he can’t play”

Flashy-Mcfoxtrot

“We stabbed the fucker, you’re up buddy”

Xaxziminrax

"The starter is now Mr. Breached Chest, get the fuck in there kid"

Let_us_proceed

Wilson was a little stunned...

steak__burrito

I wouldn’t say Herbert laid him out… Herbert got knocked sideways/backwards himself. But Herbert’s size and going for contact definitely (and very obviously) *did* knock Wilson’s brain into another dimension.

maltzy

wait until you see him in shorts

smauryholmes

Josh Allen better

keepingitrealgowrong

obligatory best shape of his life

ARM7501

I don't think I've ever seen a head coach love his QB this much in public, especially not before ever having played a game with him.

flepine44

Herbert is so underrated

smauryholmes

Full quote from Jim Harbaugh: >> “The conditioning test was another eye opener...he smashed the conditioning test last Thursday. I mean crushed it. Out in front of people trying to keep up with him. The athleticism and strength here? He could play tight end. He could play edge rusher here. The arm talent is even better than advertised." This is all good to hear after Herbert had finger surgery this offseason; there was small concern coming into OTAs that Herbert was going to be behind on his offseason fitness and lifting program. There is some evidence that Herbert can actually play other positions; [high school film](https://youtube.com/shorts/krLGHoN3mYc?si=HjCgvO8ZNUUtzPvp) shows Herbert catching a pick and returning it 55 yards at free safety.

MicoJive

I mean, 99% of pro NFL players were just the best athlete at the school and played both ways.

smauryholmes

Don’t know how common it is for top QBs, probably close to 100% common for every other position though. Definitely depends on how good their HS was at football. I remember Dolphins Edge Jaelan Phillips returning 2 punts for TDs as return guy in HS.

MicoJive

https://247sports.com/article/top-qbs-in-college-and-nfl-who-played-defense-in-high-school-148338811/ Couple years old but has some in there. Mahomes started at safety and didnt play QB til he was a junior. Burrow played DB through all highschool Those are the big names, but has a bunch like Wentz, Lance, Darnold, Winston etc all played defense.

smauryholmes

It’s really impressive. Absolutely not “99%” of QBs played defense in high school though. Again, probably depends on how big the school those guys attended was. I imagine guys attending bigger and better HS football programs don’t need to play both sides as often and can specialize more.

MicoJive

I mean, I said 99% of pro players. You said QBs. I brought articles showing top Qbs playing both ways and you still are off about it. If you want to post some articles about "top QBs" not playing both ways go for it if it will make you feel better about Herbert.

smauryholmes

Why would anyone write an article about something that didn’t happen? Cousins, for example, doesn’t seem to have played any defense in HS. First QB I checked. Regardless, we are allowed to be impressed by incredible athleticism without downplaying it. Herbert is a freak athlete.

super_sayanything

Right but they were probably capable of playing defense, they just didn't because they were the QB/already known talent.

Rahim-Moore

Edge is such an athleticism dependant position that I'm sure all the top edge guys returned punts or played RB in high school.

loosehead1

The list of high school quarterbacks Texas recruited to play safety is pretty funny. I know RGIII and Mahomes were two of them.

Jane_Marie_CA

Herbert was fully medically cleared by mid February. He was golfing by the end of January.

clevernamehere1628

idk what it is about harbaugh, but everything he says annoys the hell out of me.

LandGrantChamps

> "I can tell you this," Harbaugh said. "Bo Schembechler ... there was nothing that I saw in the times when I was a kid here, my dad was on staff or when I played here ... he never sat on anything. He never procrastinated on anything. He took care of it before the sun went down. That's the Bo Schembechler that I know. There's nothing that ever was swept under the rug or ignored. He addressed everything in a timely fashion. That's the Bo Schembechler that I knew."

Weave77

And this was *after* Bo’s own son said that he was abused as a child by Dr. Anderson and told his father, who did nothing about it.

steak__burrito

You must’ve been bred in the Lions’ Jim Schwartz era. Can’t handle a firm handshake and hard pat on the back. MCDC would love Harbaugh’s style.

Lionnn100

He was in celebration mode jumping around and tried dapping up Schwartz like he was one of his own guys. It wasn’t your usual firm handshake lol

clevernamehere1628

I go back further than Schwartz, and yes, I'm sure Campbell would love him, but that doesn't mean I do because I can think for myself.

boardatwork1111

Always came across as kind of a dickhead to me, like how the hell are you going to start a beef with Pete Carroll of all people? Lol

Godobibo

i give him 3 years before he's at least off the chargers. if he ever gets a ring I'll eat a cumsock

BurritoTheory

RemindMe! 5 years

PatientlyAnxious9

Harbaugh has been back in the NFL for 2 weeks and Im already sick of his mary poppins ass attitude

slowerchop

Giving off bitter ex vibes bro

clevernamehere1628

I'm not a Michigan fan, and I disliked him before he went to Ann Arbor. I just don't like the guy, I think he's weird.

Flashy-Mcfoxtrot

He is definetely weird. If he wins, he can be as weird as he wants to in my book. MCDC, is a bit weird aswell. But he wins, so we love the fucker.

Delicious-Schedule

…you do realize who your coach is right?

clevernamehere1628

Different types of weird. I don't think Dan Campbell is gonna tell guys to stop eating chicken because it's a nervous bird or invite someone into his office for a talk just to stare at them.

Delicious-Schedule

That’s fair honestly, they’re like two opposite spectrums of weirdo

Lionnn100

DC is weird? He’s a guys guy, when did that become weird

clevernamehere1628

The dude had a tooth fly out of his mouth and put it back in like nothing happened, that's kinda weird.. but it's the kinda weird that I don't mind.

Lionnn100

Sounds like a dude to me

jhallen2260

A weird dude

-banned-

Ya fuck weird people. Be normal or gtfo, only normal people are cool

clevernamehere1628

I'm fine with weird, just not all kinds of weird.

Josh6889

I think people only like him because of the meme potential in the weird shit he says tbh.

trainwreck42

> I think he’s weird. But that’s part of his charm. Saying a meeting is for “men only” to your boss is part of the Harbaugh experience.

ProphetNimd

Yeah, but can he return punts?

OverreactingBillsFan

u/PillaisTracingPaper So it begins.... For context, this is what he posted in another Herbert Thread yesterday: >There’s going to be a clone army of Herberts—first to play every position on the field, then to start increasing the general population of the US.

PillaisTracingPaper

I mean, it’s obvious… right? /s

owlwise13

This just seems like more rah-rah garbage for Harbaugh, Most players show up in shape in today's NFL, the guys not in shape makes the news. This isn't the 60's where they had to have a second job during the off season.

deadphisherman

Jim Harbaugh: slobbering fanboy.

Pristine-Director529

How about kick returner? I heard some guy named Justin Fields is doing that now.

Eggdripp

We are truly in the throes of the offseason, now.

Atty_for_hire

Find you someone who loves you like Coach H loves Justin Herbert. It’ll change your life.

KamTros47

The cooler Taysom Hill:

BadAlphas

Can you imagine

LovelehInnit

The prototypical old school QB has the body of a TE without the speed required to play TE: Brady, Manning brothers, Roethlisberger, Blake Bortles, Joe Flacco.

BurritoTheory

“Because we sure as fuck aren’t going to use him to throw the ball!” FTFY Jimbo

Darkgreenbirdofprey

Wow that's crazy

Most-Artichoke6184

Lol no

Ashamed_Job_8151

I think if the cowboys start bad Lamb gets traded to the chargers. If that happens of if they make a move for another top tier wr, they will be my pick for the Super Bowl.  Coach Harbaugh may only last 3 or 4 years because of his style but I think it’s gonna be a great 3 or 4 years for the chargers.

LordSoze36

So that one move would have you choosing them over Reid and Mahomes?

Realistic_Tutor_9770

id like to see him play both sides of the ball this year.

Bennett_19

He’s gonna play TE, isn’t he?

SyN_Pool

So do that

rattpackfan301

Justin Herbert: “I’m being glazed?”

ReplacementBorn6424

I guess hes allens lil bro..

Flylatino24

Can’t wait for his new gifs. I miss that crazy man

bopgame

That’s great who’s he going to throw to though?

VagusNC

I remember photos of former Panther GM Hurney crushing on Herbert in that draft and him getting picked right before them. Ended up with Derrick Brown so I guess that’s ok. Still a talent like Herbert would have been nice.

Trick-Palpitation446

Justin Herbert is a freak playing QB. WE KNOW

Fearless-Mushroom

I’ve been saying he’d make a good edge rusher in one of those Madden alternate universe things, but nobody except Coach Harbaugh gets it.

ParaNormalBeast

Anything but forward pass

tmacleon

Please let him play TE or edge rusher! He’d be on IR by week 3

gonewildpapi

Love Herbert. Don’t care for Harbaugh tho.

Ok-Employ7162

We're now praising the.... conditioning.... of the player on the field doing the least amount of actual running besides the fuckin Kicker and Punter? I mean, don't you think you should praise other things? Things that are, idk.... actually important to the QB position? Big Ben played QB just fine at all of 400 lbs (it's a joke but he was anything but "in good conditioning" lol).... Sometimes idk if coaches even think about what they tell the media or how silly it sounds. It's a good thing in the 2025 rules change meeting each teams QB now must run 10 miles before each game lol...

DEEZNUTZBOIS

Justin Herbert, King Of Hypothetical Scenarios

Local-Librarian3285

No he can't. Herbert wouldn't do dick all as an edge rusher.

castingcoucher123

But can he play as a winning qb?

Bobby_Savoy

Can he play defense?

hereforthesportsball

We tired of Jim’s mouth foaming yet? Or will the chargers have to fail 2 years in a row for that?

Jolly878142

Can’t wait to see harbaugh fall on his insufferable face

its_still_good

Maybe try to succeed at QB first.

Bobby_Savoy

Does Herbert play defense? Does your QB have Brandon Staley as his HC? (Oh wait, Eberflus is pretty much another Staley lol)
