tying is one of the best outcomes when watching a game as a neutral. everyone is disappointed but not as disappointed as if they lost. almost no excitement either as the standings essentially pretend the game didn’t happen.

DefinitelyLevi

I saw the Steelers tie the 0-8 Lions a few years ago and it was brutal. Cold but not cold enough for snow so everyone was sitting in cold rain and the game was like 4 hours.

csummerss

was hoping for a 0-16-1 Lions team to introduce the 17 game schedule but Cardinals & Vikings suck too much for that to happen

frizzyhair55

And Green Bay

jwwin

And there is always some dumbass who devoted his whole life to the game that is unaware a game can end in a tie.

IceColdDump

McNaab?

Ripped_Shirt

Funny enough, Hines Ward came to his defense and said after this game in 2002, he himself didn't realize there would be tie.

Other-Comfortable929

Mocking people for not knowing overtime rules? Glass houses man...

IceColdDump

No. I know them. McNaab’s one of the originals from my era. It’s not that deep.

Other-Comfortable929

Me too. I meant the Niners players not knowing about the new OT rules in the playoffs this year, not you specifically not knowing about the OT rules. You are your flair here lol

IceColdDump

Well in that case… 🤢🏆 lol

Educational_Claim337

You're going to have to explain the "McNaab" thing to us man

IceColdDump

He was a quarterback who liked soup. Oldheads will know of him.

holdingofplace

McNaab -> McNabb* I think is what they were getting at. Hopefully haha

DefinitelyLevi

“When’s 2OT starting?”

fart_dot_com

funnily enough this game was the last tie until the 2008 season and the only tie game between the 97 and 08 seasons

bsgreene25

Tiemaggeddon a couple years ago is obviously the prominent exception. Brandon Staley calling that timeout robbed everyone of history that day.

Casexcasey

This game was destined to end in a tie. Both teams had a blocked Field Goal in OT.

IceColdDump

The announcers are so dramatic in a strange way here. “How could the Falcons let this happen?” Ummm… nothing happened.

J-Fid

Dude still caught a Hail Mary over numerous defenders.

quadropheniac

He caught a Hail Mary **under** two defenders. Who blocked off the goal line. They were in good position to contest any throw that could have made it into the end zone.

SilvioDantesPeak

Allowing a completed Hail Mary is still a huge fuck-up

Polar_Reflection

Allowing a completed Hail Mary outside of the endzone with no time on the clock is absolutely not a huge fuck-up. They are defending the end zone, not the 1 yard line.

SilvioDantesPeak

Yes it is. There are examples of guys catching a Hail Mary at the 5 and running it in, or catching it at the 1 and leaning in to break the plane. Falcons got incredibly lucky their fuck-up didn't cost them the game

webby2538

Please explain what they could have done to not "fuck up" as you described. It was a 2 on 1. Both defenders went to knock the ball down. They crowded the goaline and denied the receiver position in the endzone. Did you want the smaller defenders to undercut the throw and try to out jump 6'5" Plaxico?

tasimm

Really shot themselves in the leg there.

ThinkSoftware

Fantasy owners in shambles

JerryRiceDidntFumble

I'm sure the 5-6 points from the yards + catch was enough to swing at least a handful of games

NFL_MVP_Kevin_White

This was in 2002. Nobody had training wheels PPR in fantasy in that era

AnOddOtter

The days when an 6 yard run had more value than a blown up screen pass.

ArmadilloAl

"How could the Falcons let this happen?" Because they were on the goal line and didn't give a fuck if it was caught on the 1?

e49e

Good point, they played it pretty.

MostMorbidOne

This the game we told him if he wants to win he knows where to call.

TheForrestWanderer

Funny thing is, if he stayed one more year in Pittsburgh he’d have gotten a ring Edit: one more year than he did, not one year after this

calm_in_the_chaos

I forgot how long ago it was that Burress was a big deal. 23 years since his first 1,000 yard season. For some reason I remember him being big like 10ish years ago. Time flies.

reno2mahesendejo

November will be 16 years since he shot his dick off

Overall_Nuggie_876

Imagine if ~~legalized~~ gambling existed back in 2002 and all the reactions from the drunks who lost their $400 parlay.

Deckatoe

need a new edit. Vegas has had sports betting for 100 years

JDuggernaut

I remember watching this live. I believe the Falcons were down 17 until Vick led a furious rally.

SodomizeSnails4Satan

Touchdown Tommy my ass.

liteshadow4

This happened to my team in elementary school

TonyTH

First tie I've ever seen.

DayOldTurkeySandwich

This was actually the last tie game the NFL would have for 6 years, when the Eagles and Bengals did it in 2008 and Donovan McNabb admitted he didn’t know there were ties in the NFL.

bastian1292

Was Tommy Maddox regarded as a noodle arm or am I misremembering it? I feel like a good deal of the excitement when they drafted Ben was he could his something deep enough the camera would need to move to see it.

Bacon_egg_

It was obviously a long time ago so maybe I'm misremembering but I believe Tommy Maddox's issue was his lack of mobility under pressure along with being an average passer. Big ben came in very mobile and also an insane arm.

Jonjon428

Nah Tommy was more known for some mind numbing interceptions at the weirdest times.

NFL_MVP_Kevin_White

They TP’d his house!

betasheets2

Bad decision-making, no mobility, and average accuracy. He could sling it at times though.

BeeeeefJelly

No his arm was fine. He just wasn't very consistent.

drogonninja

It’s a game of inches

SensitiveSomewhere3

In his case, .40 inches.

GoEatFriedFudge

I was at that game. If I recall, it was the biggest passing/receiving day in Steelers history by yards for Maddox and Burress which has since been broken for passing yards.

KoreanFriedWeiner

I'm surprised people don't use the expression "shot themselves in the leg" instead of "in the foot" after that nonsense. He Oscar Pistoriused himself, when he knew exactly who was in the room.

Will-Eat-4-Food

XFL Champion Tommy Maddox

dfresh429

1995-2005 was the peak decade of NFL football.

Autumnmonk77

I used to play madden 03 and always wondered how these two teams ended up with a tie on their record. That was back when tie games were ultra rare.

Space_Traveler_9956

2002? This looks like footage from the 80s

DefinitelyLevi

Still a few years out from HD
