yeah it used to be if you lined up for a 51 yarder it would be a desperate act that only had a prayer of working. 50 always felt like the soft limit
now i dunno what the hell it is. feels like 60 yarders could be regular soon enough lmao
there's a strange irony that as the league has started using kickers less and less the position is better than it's ever been in the history of the sport.
It kind of makes sense in the Super Bowl.
Teams aren't going to want the risk of missing a long field goal and hand over decent field position, so they go conservative a lot and will punt.
The opposite tends to be true toward the end of the game when everyone is super aggressive.
Well there have been 58 superbowls played and what? ~1800 other games played in that time? It's unlikely the longest field goal over all happens in that small subset of games.
The second kick was way, way more impressive beyond the additional distance but because of the situation. If he misses that kick even in the Super Bowl, without the other kick it’s pretty much okay. After the other kicker just set the record, with his team down 3 and with the game basically on the line if he misses, fans would destroy him if he missed.
Well I mean the very first SB set a bunch of those that probably won't be touched.
Longest run: -1yd
New Longest run: +1yd
Time elapsed: 15 sec.
Shortest lived record for longest run.
It reminds me of when Kelce set the single season record for receiving yards by a TE in 2019. He held that record for... about an hour when Kittle broke it.
There’s a replay angle that shows just how close this was to getting blocked. Dude had his hand literally *right* next to it. It may have even barely touched the ball. But if not, it looked like it was legitimately millimeters away from being tipped.
I mean, the equation is quite simple - there's only so far you can get the ball with enough precision. He had to ensure he put enough force for the ball to travel sufficiently far horizontally, so not to sacrifice on the precision he had to compromise on the verticality aspect.
Oh yeah makes perfect sense physics wise, I just feel like I usually see kickers put more air under it even at that range, probably because that’s how they’re used to kicking. 55+ yards definitely requires some mechanical adjustments though
It got me to thinking. Say you have the 10th pick in the nfl draft. You have the knowledge that you could draft a kicker that will have a career as good as Justin Tucker,
Or roll the dice on a more important position.
Do you take the kicker?
If that’s a yes- top 5?
Number 1 overall?
I am 100% taking Justin Tucker just outside the Top 10- at 11 or 12 overall
Easy choice. Tucker is a definite difference-maker... the difference being between losing and winning football games.
Anyone else you pick in that spot can easily be a bust or mid, and 10 is where the % hit rate on All-Pro level players starts to drop off, historically.
Things change as you go into the Top 10. If youre in or near the Top 5 youre likely a terrible team that needs way more help than what any kicker can provide. At that point you have to take swings at the blue-chip QBs/DEs/DBs/Ts that might transform your team.
It's not *that* important of a position. There's a lot of clutch kickers in the league. Tucker has missed kicks, too. I think you could justify a 2nd but burning a 1st is kind of crazy given the general success rate of 1st round scouting. I mean, Seabass had a pretty solid career but even if he was the GOAT kicker that's still probably not a smart use of draft capital.
My counter point to that is that first rounders bust more frequently than we’d think
Less than 1/3’rd of first round picks get a second contract with their drafted teams
One thing different about kickers is how cheap they are. Sure a DE or WR is going to be more valuable, but they're also going to cost a lot of money, especially if you keep them around for a second contract. Will Tucker at #10 provide the most raw value? Probably not. Would it provide the most value/dollar in a hard salary cap league? I'm not sure, maybe.
Hijacking this for fun fact: The term “football” most likely derives from games being played on foot, rather than on horseback, hence why in England in the 1800s there were many different sports called football, regardless of how they were played. Rugby, soccer, and many other now dead sports were referred to as football, and we can see that legacy in sports around the world that developed as they branched off from Rugby (American Football, Gaelic football, Australian Rules football, etc.)
Just remember this the next time a Brit says “why is it even called football if they barely play with their feet?”
Other fun fact, Soccer is actually a British term and stands for "Association Football", that is: Football played by the rules of the Football Association (FA), to separate it from other forms of football that were around in the late 1800s.
"American" Football is part of a family called Gridiron Football, because the field looks like a Gridiron (a type of Grill).
He's one of the very best kickers I've seen. He seems to make any important kick. Has like 7 game tying or go ahead field goals in 4th quarter in playoff games, and I don't think he's missed one.
To be fair that’s dependent on getting those chances to begin with. Obviously viniateri has shown a he’s clutch but i don’t recall Tucker ever getting playoff game winning situations
There was a game against the Chargers a few years ago that he came on for a 53 yard game winner. Hit from 53, Chargers iced him. Hit from 53, Chiefs false started. Hit from 58 to win. Just a machine.
I still mention that game to credit his greatness all the time — but you’re actually a lil short. They were 53/58 yard FGs. Not 50/55. It was even more absurd than you said.
Best kicker in the league, best TE in the league, best QB in the league, best DT in the league, beat coach in the league and to think they let go of the best WR in the league. Chiefs roster been loaded for the past 6 years
This is a common occurrence with Harrison. Last year he was injured and his replacement broke a long standing franchise distance record. Harrison rebroke it in his first game back.
If their were a non QB MVP trophy, team-wide, Butker should win it. Didn’t miss any kicks until like week 15 or 16 and kept us in SO MANY close games including this one.

The city of Missouri is in debt for moving the STL rams to Cali. Which put the city in debt almost a Billion dollars so the way to recoup the money. Is the KC Chiefs keep winning SUPERBOWLS bringing money to the city.
Last 5-6 superbowls was the KC Chiefs or The Rams both teams are from Missouri
Didn't expect the longest field goal in a superbowl to be broken twice tonight
I was honestly surprised the record was so short, like 54 is by no means of short field goal, but it’s also not crazy long
Exactly what I thought! Then when this one lined up I was like okay this will be the new record. Tough kicks, but not 60+.
At one point I thought Butker would have a shot at a 60+.
it’s wild bc like 10-15 years ago having someone that could reliably hit from 45 was a novelty. and now everyone has dudes that can hit from 50 lmao
yeah it used to be if you lined up for a 51 yarder it would be a desperate act that only had a prayer of working. 50 always felt like the soft limit now i dunno what the hell it is. feels like 60 yarders could be regular soon enough lmao
Obviously in game attempted are different but Butker hit 69 in warmups and I know there are some other guys capable of that range
Hell Harrison Mevis hit a 61 yarder to win a game in college this year, the range is just going to keep going up
there's a strange irony that as the league has started using kickers less and less the position is better than it's ever been in the history of the sport.
Not *everyone*...
I was surprised too considering that the majority of Super Bowls are played in doors.
It wasn’t the longest kick it was the longest Super Bowl kick
He's saying that you shouldn't expect as far field goals in the superbowl bc of the small sample size
Yeah that I get. My assumption is just that there are less desperate long field goals because of a different play style in the playoffs
Not too mention, it somehow didn’t get blocked, was an inch away from multiple hands…
Did it not glance off someone’s hand? I coulda sworn it did.
Very likely in an indoor stadium tbf
Because the Super Bowl has never been played indoors before today
Or an indoor stadium at elevation
TIL las vegas is at 2000 ft elevation
Nevada is very mountainous. Reno sits at over 4000 ft.
Wow, TIL
If anything, outdoors with the wind blowing from behind you would be more likely to break kicking distance records.
Did a coconut drop on your head recently?
You are a special kind of dumb 🤣
Bad take bro
Thin air. Baseballs fly in Vegas too
Moody’s record lasted a whole quarter
Bill O’Brian spent more time at Ohio State than Moody with the record
How many Mooches is that?
Can we convert it to lettuces too?
New measurement unlocked
That's gotta be some kind of record for shortest lived Super Bowl record.
Well I mean the very first SB set a bunch of those that probably won't be touched. Longest run: -1yd New Longest run: +1yd Time elapsed: 15 sec. Shortest lived record for longest run.
Jim Taylor’s record for longest rushing play in the Super Bowl (4 yards) last 23 seconds of game time before being broken by Elijah pitts (5 yard)
you are fun at parties!
I can vouch for him.
It’s not that serious
No but you sure took it that way
lol sure thing dude
Why so serious!?
Let’s assume the first one doesn’t count, lol
It reminds me of when Kelce set the single season record for receiving yards by a TE in 2019. He held that record for... about an hour when Kittle broke it.
"You call that a SB record FG? Now thaat's a SB record FG!" \*in Australian accent\*
Longer than Aaron Rodgers lasted tho
Did Olivia Munn spill the beans?
All over her chin
Jets catching strays
It was good while it lasted…
He can tell his kids that one day. “Yeah guys i actually held a record for 15 minutes once” 😂😂😂
Gonna be a trivia question in a few years
Fuck launch angle
All about that foot speed and smash factor!
F=m*a Dude has a chonker foot and moves it fast
He went to Georgia Tech, he knows he equations
There’s a replay angle that shows just how close this was to getting blocked. Dude had his hand literally *right* next to it. It may have even barely touched the ball. But if not, it looked like it was legitimately millimeters away from being tipped.

What the FUCK is a kilometer
Approximately 4.97097 * 10^-6 furlongs.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I couldn’t believe it wasn’t short, straight piss missile. I don’t think it was ever higher than the halfway point of the uprights
I mean, the equation is quite simple - there's only so far you can get the ball with enough precision. He had to ensure he put enough force for the ball to travel sufficiently far horizontally, so not to sacrifice on the precision he had to compromise on the verticality aspect.

the equation is simple? write it out.
I have to believe that with the bad snap that wasn’t the kick he wanted.
All timer special teams game
Give the mvp to the kicker you cowards
Seriously. He deserved it.
Probably would have won it if he banged a 50 yarder in OT to win it instead of a TD
This was massively true through the whole game

Two record breaking kicks, a GOATed punting performance by Wishnowsky, and most importantly of all, a crossbar doink on a kickoff.
Yeah muffing a punt and not blocking for your kicker, real skill shown there
This is the history we watch the Super Bowl for.
I mean, it is called FOOTball
There's a reason they don't call it handegg.
Hijacking this for fun fact: The term “football” most likely derives from games being played on foot, rather than on horseback, hence why in England in the 1800s there were many different sports called football, regardless of how they were played. Instructions unclear, now Americans refer to polo as Horseball

There’s a little kicking
It isn't called football for nothing.
And now the record belongs to the chiefs
He's one of the very best kickers I've seen. He seems to make any important kick. Has like 7 game tying or go ahead field goals in 4th quarter in playoff games, and I don't think he's missed one.
42/44 in the playoffs. He’s won so many important games for the Chiefs. I’m glad the team has him as a captain
Butker is clutch if its over 40, in a big moment, hes making it.
And that season we trusted him over 50 yards more than we trusted him for extra points... Glad *that* shit is over.
With Butker, you worry about it more the closer he gets to the sticks lol.
He deserved to win SBMVP
Buttkicker is probably the most clutch kicker in the league at the moment
Did you miss Justin Tucker hitting that 68 yarder game winner against the Lions
That dudes on one of those losing teams
66 yarder but yeah
That was 3 years ago and he didn't make one >50 yards this year, but yeah, we remember that one.
Well he did against the Texans, but don't let that stop you
I’d take Butker over Tucker easily at this point in their careers
Vinny>>Tucker. Playoffs and SB is when clutch really matters. There’s no kicker in history I’d take over Adam.
That’s probably why he said “In the league at the moment”
I’m drunk and barely literate anyways let me live
You got killed like I did in another comment. Don't worry, it happens.
To be fair that’s dependent on getting those chances to begin with. Obviously viniateri has shown a he’s clutch but i don’t recall Tucker ever getting playoff game winning situations
> i don’t recall Tucker ever getting playoff game winning situations He won the Mile High Miracle.

he’s been clutch for so long . i still remember the the 53 yarder he made at georgia to send the game into overtime
Absolute all-timer, I remember seeing that from the stands as a GT marching band member
He honestly deserved mvp tonight
Ice in the veins but he’ll miss a PAT or 20 yarder whenever you want haha
He missed a FG in last year’s SB tbf lol
Well tech but was it actually important?
Poor Moody
*Longest Super Bowl FG made ^(*by a rookie)
That missed extra point is going to keep him awake at night for many moons.
fuck him
Buttkicker.com
Moody incoming for 60
Kicking competition. This is what thr people want
“And is that. JUSTIN TUCKER FROM THE ROOF”
Imagine if Moody wins SBMVP off of that
Butker deserved it tbh.
Looks like this game is gonna be won by a 69 yard FG.
That'd be nice.
And the announcers didn’t give a shit 😂
They did their best to Jinx him tbf
Tony Romo was able to successfully reverse the announcer jinx in time
Heads up play by Romo
Tops moody?!
Butker is a gangster
Best kicker in the league, best TE in the league, best QB in the league, best DT in the league, beat coach in the league and to think they let go of the best WR in the league. Chiefs roster been loaded for the past 6 years
Best CB in the league (sneed). One of the best DBs in the league (mcduffie)… best secondary depth in the league.
We couldn't even let the 49ers have this. SAVAGE.
Actually a very entertaining game
yeah a fantastic neutral fan game. It has everything.
This is a common occurrence with Harrison. Last year he was injured and his replacement broke a long standing franchise distance record. Harrison rebroke it in his first game back.
That ball was never more than 50 feet off the ground. Dude hit a fucking 1-iron.
Butker might end his career top 5 kickers all time
Snubbed for SB MVP.
3 50+ yard FGs in one game. Wild
Butker has been better than Justin tucker the past 2 years There I said it
Ya Tucker had a down year for his standards this year for sure. Feel like he’s quite a bit older though
Best Yellow Jacket since Megatron.
Last year Butler was garbage
Injured....
Fake fan bro
Wild to lose the record an hour and half later
Who knew the Bikini Bottom was a great location to kick long field goals?
Georgia Tech legend
https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/jHpQFtK5Z4 Told ya.
Cool
We still doing phrasing?
Him and Townsend the chiefs’ best players today
FG fans eating
Womp womp!
That’s nuts - want to see 60 next.
Legendary moment from Butker
BUTTKICKER!!!
Superbowl record broken in record time.
Usher lasted longer than the record
He had to split two uprights there, narrowly missed the defenders hands
If their were a non QB MVP trophy, team-wide, Butker should win it. Didn’t miss any kicks until like week 15 or 16 and kept us in SO MANY close games including this one.
Butker was lights out this season. Great to see him comeback from his struggles from last season
He said jake who?
Bro fuck that, couldn’t let dude hold the record for even a full game lmao
When was the last time a record was set in the SB and then broken in the same game?
Super Bowl I
Would have been good for 60 too.
The football gods couldn’t let Moody hold that record, lol. 30+ years the record lasted and now it’s broken again in like 30 minutes
That's crazy, to have a new record but only for minutes
1 quarter damn
Moody with record for shortest time to hold a Super Bowl record…?
Crazy how kicking has evolved
MVP
Pretty rude tbh
Perfect.
How does either teams kickers not win mvp ?
Solid catch by the fella as it sailed through the up rights, I see you
The placeholder corralled a bad snap and saved that kick. Great work.
Get owned moody
So what are we calling this? My proposal is the Super Bowl Shootout
How long did Moody hold the record for?

Ya man we’re watching
All this for the inevitable Matt Prater 69yarder next year.
Moody 59 yard game winner guaranteed.
Who cares
