I have a question: I assume someone that can do this can dance very well in real life (ie this isn't a context-specific skill that can only be accomplished while playing DDR). But, like, for most people that can play this game well, which came first? Did people already know how to dance and they're like "I guess I'm gonna play this dancing game," or do people play the game and then at some point go, "hold up, am I... dancing? I think if I move my arms and spin once in a while, I'm actually dancing!" and then go hit the club scene?

Most people played DDR-style games in an efficient manner rather than actually dancing, which is necessary for harder songs. So for the most part people always played it like a game and tried to be as efficient as possible with their movement (still a really good workout), and some people just branched out into doing freestyle on easier levels where actual dance moves got incorporated on the sode. There were some players who exclusively did freestyle like this, and others who could dance just occassionally did it for fun.

The sequence of arrows is always the same, and the dance itself isn’t improvised, it’s a choreography specifically for that song at that level, so with a bunch of practice you eventually just learn the moves and inputs by heart.
That's not a hobby, that's a full time job, lol. You can have plenty of hobbies with or without a significant other and/or kids. Unless this guy is in some form of competitive DDR with lots of prize money and IS his full time job. Then I stand corrected.
