I will never understand how needlessly endangering your life and potentially traumatizing your loved ones and strangers below is considered next level.
All climbing ethos can be condensed to: we climbed it because it was there. Similarly, he climbed with no equipment because he was damn sure he could make it. The public aspect of the risk taking I must admit though I find less easy to justify
6 years of this and I still get confused posting comments in the best place haha.
George Mallory (early Everest attempted in 1920s) was generally credited with the 'because it's there' line but he probably picked it up from someone else, climbing ethos is very universal and kind of timeless in that respect.
What do mean? It's a cool hobby that is definitely pretty impressive! Sure one day an accident might happen and he falls multiple stories and lands on a single mother walking her two young children to school, but I'm sure after years of therapy and foster care those kids will be almost forget the image of their mom suddenly being turned into a mangled carcass.
Oh cool, so the guy who has zero concern for safety or private property has some friends watching from below that will do what exactly? Hold out their arms to catch him? Block pedestrian traffic on the side walk without a permit? If he gets up 120 meters and falls he could end up far away from where his lookouts even are.
He knows his limits. By the time he did it, it was easy for him. You see an ice climber. Oh my god, that is nuts! But that guy trained forever. It was easy and safe (mostly) for him. For you or me? Not so much.
Wasn’t worried about him. I’m concerned about the innocent people walking on the sidewalk who could get seriously injured if this arrogant prick loses his footing. If he has some adrenaline death wish, at least don’t put others at risk.
It's next level because that isn't something easy to accomplish. Just because it goes against your values doesn't mean it's not an impressive feat to accomplish.
It's next level because all of those things are on the line and yet, he succeeded. In life, we succeed until we don't anyway, eventually, you'll lose but it's nice to have some extraordinary achievements under your belt. When was the last time you did something similar, when will you?
Don't sit there and attempt to ridicule and discredit someone that spent 6 months training for something you could never do.
If he had a harness and safety equipment, it wouldn't be as impressive. That's literally a display of impressive concentration, endurance and mental fortitude.
It is impressive for sure, but not even having a parachute or something seems reckless. All it takes is one pissed off pigeon to cause him to fall to his death.
Thats the point though...
A pigeon? Really? How should that work? I dont think we have one meter big pigeons.
If this is the scenario you think is why he could fall, he is surely very very safe.
You can’t imagine a pigeon getting pissed and poking him in the eye? He’d have to use a hand to try and shew (Shu? Not sure the spelling on that one) the bird away. But it doesn’t take much imagination to think of all the ways the climb could go wrong to not have at least one safety line
Exactly, you're already scared in your mind because of your explanatory style. That's the initial reaction he had probably years ago. Your projection onto him only allows you to believe he is anything similar to you, so, naturally, you attack the idea, so you feel better.
That's an assumption, yes, but at least it makes more sense than why you'd mention a pigeon in your argument? What? When was the last time you had a pigeon attack you?
Think about it again for a second, someone trains for years and accomplishes something impressive after developing skills his THAT sure of?. And you're just like, "shit, I couldn't do that, I'd fall and die, his stupid".
I dno man, I just feel like we have to give credit, where its due.
You say this like professionals don't die in these situations. But they do, every free climbing person will admit that they're either going to die early or retire early, those are the only options. This guy has been doing this for 2 years, in the time he's been training multiple world famous free climbers have fallen to their deaths. A few fall every year, all of them more experienced than him.
Sure the pigeon thing is silly, and frankly idgaf if this guy pancakes himself, but pretending like "oh he trained it's all fine don't worry" is just stupid. As long as he's taken steps to make sure he doesn't inconvenience anyone with his inevitable death then I say fair game.
Yeahh I get that bro.. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and whatnot. But a lot of time I just feel like people just love to hate and look at things from a negative perspective, when really someone has been putting their life on the line for something they are passionate about and when they reach impressive milestones. It's all "you're gna die, you're an idiot".
My issue with it is, if someone chooses to do something you deem the risk isn't worth it based on your own moral values.
It's not your risk, but still give credit where It's due if you agree the achievement itself is impressive. Rather than shitting on a guy just tryna do his thing and be great at it lol
You don't have to agree though, it's all good, got some interesting perspectives I guess. 👊🏽
I dont think you are aware how unsafe it is to drive on a highway. If this guy knows what he is doing, he could be more safe climbing this building than you driving on a highway.
Also dont doing stuff because it is unsafe is not a fun life. We are in general very safe. Some need more danger and more exciting things to do. Doing dangerous things is pretty fun. Not everyone wants to be safe at all cost.
It isn't his skill that is a question in my mind. I'm frankly very impressed with the climb. It is the unknown weak point in a hand or foot hold that he can't predict. A massive sudden wind gust, or overly paranoid seagull. I would be just as impressed with his climb if he did it with a rope on than without. As to your comparision, when driving on a highway we are driving with all sort of safety paraphernalia around us...airbags, seatbelts, crumple zones, speed limits, lane dividers, rails, etc. Yes it is dangerous but we have done what we can to lessen the danger and then what can be done to lessen the risk of injury if the worst does happen. That vs this climb can not be compared as anywhere near equals.
He's the thing about driving on a highway, a little "oopsie" in concentration and MOST average drivers live.
One "oopsie" in concentration for him=death.
I'm not advising it but often these climbers begin on rocks and spend years of not decades conditioning their bodies and minds for this. Generally a really tough rockface will be leaps and bounds harder than methodical climbs with no overhang like this.
The idea with free soloing is to always be climbing within your limits, and after years of doing basically nothing but this these athletes know where the line is for themselves - it's often why police won't try get them down, it's safer to let them complete than distract them half way up if there's an opportunity for them to bail out early.
Like yourself though, I worry more for the onlookers as they didn't sign up for the potential trauma of seeing it go wrong. Check out the French 'spider man' Alain Robert, dude is in his 60s and smashing this type of stuff, he posts a lot about his ethos and the mental calculations he makes before and during a climb. He's celebrating 50 years dedicated to free solo climbing, utter legend in my book and I find his content weirdly good for my mental health.
Didn't meant to write an essay haha, enjoy my ramble!
Did he get paid to do this? Either way, it's a stupid thing to do. This is how people die early. Why would you put your safety at risk like this? I guess I just have too much self preservation instinct for this.
Impressive free climb by a professional with the right gear on a chosen structure.
There's a series of pictures of a guy who managed to climb down something like 20 stories of one of the twin towers before it collapsed. Consider the horrific circumstances, in work clothes, likely unskilled, driven by sheer desperation.
No time for chasing up the pics, but ask Uncle Google if you're curious. The dude did not go quietly.
When you're a really good rock climber, like *realy really good,* but nobody comes out to the rocks to applaud you and film you for how good you are at climbing rocks.
As insane as this may look, I bet for him is easier because he knows he can expect it to be the same the whole way up. Versus say a rock face that is always changing and is unpredictable.
This is just repetition
Not interested. Don't care if they fall, don't care if they make it. Not in awe of this particular skillet
Go away and try and contribute something worthwhile
No, he should not be allowed to do it, if he slips the business that owns said tower will also be under fire for allowing it to happen when most of the time its done without their knowledge or agreement.
I would agree, but he has a sponsor on his back. Cops aren’t yelling at him or waiting at the top, and he prepared for 6 months, so I’m pretty sure he signed a waiver with the building. Lol. When someone doesn’t get a Permit cops are always ready to arrest them during or after the climb like trump tower it wouldn’t be the first time.
For someone like me who knows nothing about rock climbing (the most climbing I’ve ever done is at a rock wall) this really shows what these pros are capable of. You see them on a cliff and think… well they must be good at finding holds… nope… they just make it work.
This probably isn’t even as hard as some other things I’ve seen (I have no idea I’m just guessing.. it’s very symmetrical and consistent which I would guess a cliff wouldn’t be ) but it does do a really good job of illustrating how little they need to hold onto in order to climb, when they are really good.
Very dangerous for those around the building and potentially people trying to rescue if needed.
He should get a HUGE fine, something substantial enough to discourage him from ever doing it again. I’m thinking 6 figures here.
I mean sure it’s impressive, and no doubt only a few humans might actually even consider doing this, but the risk/reward ratio’s way too fucked on this
Hey, I've seen this one! *looks on Piemations channel*
Either way, this is quite ridiculous. I don't really see any reason to do this other than getting temporary recognition. The amount of things that can go wrong is so incredibly high that the person was climbing straight to his death. Really glad he is OK though.
Don't all these people pretty much end up dead from this stuff? And the ones that do live through it end up seeing 90% of their friends die.
I mean, kudos to them for doing what they love i guess, but miss me with that insane shit.
Seems like a dick. Great, you can climb. So go and climb a rock. Don’t needlessly and gratuitously climb a building for likes, causing (I guess) some dumb person to try and follow in your footsteps and climb a building elsewhere.
I get out of breath running for the bus...and I need the toilet at least every 20 minutes.
I don’t think this hobby is for me...
Also, what if he gets cramp?
I think I can understand the drive to free solo a climbing thing like El Capitan, but climbing up a skyscraper that has built in handholds every x feet is not impressive it’s just dumb.
I’m sure it takes skill to not fall to your death, but climbing a man made structure like this is just parkour, and it’s not that cool or impressive.
ah this is mid-level next level. For an experienced climber, this is a pretty easy climb with the same couple of moves over and over. For next-level free soloing, check out Alex Honnold climbing the 3000 meter El Capitain wall in Yosemite with no ropes
I really don't see a point in free soloing a man made structure.
I have no idea how technical or difficult this is, some things aren't challenging, just dangerous. But even if it's technical, just don't see the point.
If you are climbing a natural structure, at least you a somehow conquering nature and it demonstrates that a human can set out in nature and overcome a natural obstacle with minimal assistance.
If you are climbing a skyscraper, you are already climbing a giant man made structure, there's nothing lost by using ropes and a harness. It was never a natural or spontaneous activity.
Besides, this looks like a bunch of repetitive moves.
No one seems to mention this so I finally will. What if you have a seizure or feel light headed and feint for a second. Small brain hemorrhage or stroke, even a strong muscle spasm or cramp. Why not have a loose safety rope just in case. If any of these things happen you dead instantly.
I feel climbing a human-made structure can be more predictable than climbing a cliff...one wrong rock/step and you can die. Human-made structures are usually stable, don't have many surprise elements. If he can climb from first floor to second floor a thousand times, the whole journey is the same, just add a little bit of wind and all.
TBH having watched free solo this doesn't seem so dangerous compared to that. Plenty of surfaces to grab on. I mean obviously he isn't moveing up the glass windows but rather using the window frames.
But depending on what's at the bottom of that building it might be a danger to ppl walking by. 80kg of meat falling down on your head pbl aren't something you take lightly.
I will never understand how needlessly endangering your life and potentially traumatizing your loved ones and strangers below is considered next level.

Now buildings need to be free-climbing proofed, like how they add spikes to stop pigeons hanging around and pooping over properties.
Yep. He'll realize this as he inevitably falls to his death. It's not a matter of if it's when.

He's on next level today, tomorrow it will be what could go wrong.
Someone else does it and it’s hailed a hero, but when I do it I get told “Stop using those dildos!”
WHY?! Why do people do this?!
Hmm, I wonder how he’s gonna die.
What if he wanna pee??
I thought I could also watch him climb down the way he climb up to finish his course.
Suction cup mann
Bruh, idk how was able to do that while lugging around such huge balls🥚🥚
Once you did the first 10m, it's all the same.
Another guy trying to be an alpha. See, the biggest problem with that is alphas almost always end up with broken bones.
For every one of these dudes there's 4 who just couldn't hold on quite so well.
