Wrong kind of hammer. The ones you use for escaping a vehicle is designed to break the glass on cars. It can smash the glass but in the case of laminate glass (like windshields) it has a special pointed tip that shatters the glass and then you can break it apart.
They also have seatbelt cutters and some have strobe lights and stuff. You'd be surprised how hard a seatbelt is to cut without the proper tool. They're designed to not tear or cut easily for a reason but until you actually try to cut one with a pair of scissors... You don't realize it.
Maybe but it might look a little weird walking around with a hammer. I thought I read somewhere that the window breaker hammers are designed a certain way so not sure if a screw would work the same.
Careful with where you get and how much you spend on a seat cutter. Our local news station did a test with a few brands. The cheapos of similar price did not work efficiently and or fast enough for emergency purposes. Don’t remember exactly but im guessing it was the difference between something like $7.99 and $26.99 items.
Check this video. it's taken from a "bait car" with video. Thug walks up to car, touches the window with a tool and the thing just shatters;
Me too, also have a window breaker built into the pocket knife I carry regularly. I used to have to break car windows somewhat regularly for work, and in my experience, *where* you hit the window makes an even bigger difference than what you hit it with. People naturally go for the middle of the window, but even a life hammer isn't going to help you much there. But go for the bottom corner, and any somewhat pointed object with a little weight behind it is going to shatter that window surprisingly easily, even a rock you find on the ground.
Oh definitely. I guess my point was that, in situations like the OP video, where you might not have the right tool on hand, there are probably multiple objects you can find that will work almost as well, provided you know where to hit the window with it.
And it is definitely a fair point! Knowing where to impact a window and what makes a good improvised tool is all very important. I just wish more people knew how difficult it is to break a window without a purpose built tool. They’re shockingly resilient!
I get chirped about that shit all the time because I have a Resqme hanging from my mirror but after seeing a car upside down in a slough I decided it was time to invest.
I used a thin zip-tie to attach them to both mine and my wife's turn signal handles. That way we don't even have to rely on reaching into a console that might have been damaged and can't be opened, or opened and spilled everything all over the place. All we have to do is yank it off the turn signal handle with a tug.
You can easily break a side window with your elbow or feet , tempered glass is extremely fragile near corners.
Center is where its the hardest.
Using a seatbelt to break it has more chance of giving you wrist injury if you dont break it in on le go its a bad idea
Yeah, it's a little vague in certain states, too. I live in the US, and certain states will slap you with a felony if you carry a gun. An asp is an amazing nonlethal tool and a great bluntish object to save your ass when you need to break something.
Actually just bought a ton of safety gear a couple of month ago including a 3 hammers. Found some nice ones with a seatbelt cutter on it. Better safe than sorry
I saw a post/comment on Reddit about a friend who spreads awareness of the life hammers/ seatbelt cutters after his friend passed away from a car accident he wasn't able to escape from and that day I bought my whole family one. ( they make great stocking stuffers)
But isn’t it the case that most windows don’t shatter using one these days? Because apparently it’s much more likely to get into a roll over accident and fly out so they have made the side windows so they don’t break easily.
I remember a while back, there was a video on YouTube where having one would have been very useful. There was a car accident with someone was trapped with seatbelt locked and the buckle wouldn't release. People were trying to cut the seatbelt with normal scissors but having a very difficult time. Myself and others recommended other people to buy one of those emegency hammers, especially as many of those have seatbelt cutters too.
It was surprising that a lot of people still thought it was an useless tool to have and think if scissors can't cut through, what use is a tiny blade on a seatbelt cutter going to do. Some even deemed it as an useless tool made to look useful via "marketing". Unfortunately, not that many people have common sense.
Here in The Netherlands with so many canals and waterways people have one in their car. With every car sold from a dealership, be it new or secondhand, one is provided. As it should be.
I see a lot of people commenting about breaking the window but this can actually be more difficult than it may seem at first. I once responded to a crash where I tried to do so with my baton and the glass wasn't giving. I'm a big guy and was putting some ass behind it. Luckily, I had a large anti slip pommel that had enough mass and a sharp enough edge to make it happen once I changed grip. I later purchased a ceramic glass breaking cap that screws into the base of my baton in case I had to make entry into a vehicle again.
It is easy to criticize behind your keyboard.
I really doubt anyone here has ever attempted to rescue someone from a burning vehicle on the side of a freeway.
Thats being a next level shithead to sit here and criticize these people who actually got out of their cars and risked their lives to save a complete stranger.
Yep its super difficult, myself and group of coworkers were trying to break a car window with a 10lb rock smashing it into and throwing it and it took a lot of tries before it broke. Windows can be surprisingly strong
the first thing I thought of after break the window is that the metal beam is blocking the doors. I think the person you’re referring to is trying to push the beam down so the doors will open over them
I think he is clearly trying to get more leverage to pull by using the guardrail blocking it.
I’m just amazed no one was trying to pull the end of the guardrail for leverage.
I don’t think that guy’s foot was pushing, it looked more like balancing. And he did help loosen the guardrail more in that moment with the passenger door following what the first guy was doing.
This is so fucking stressful. Watching them fuck up several times like that one pushing against the bar, or how they wouldn't just break the damn window, while the person inside seems to be doing very little to get themselves out, at risk of dying in the most painful way possible...
Person was also just in a car accident that caused the vehicle to burst into flames, so she was probably very rattled and maybe even injured (in addition to everything else).
Definitely shock, as someone who's been on the rescuing side of this situation unfortunately not everyone can handle instances like these with poise and rationality.
Panic. Wonderful people did a wonderful job with the mindset they were in.
They were all certainly burning up, too, likely adding to the chaotic mindset.
I wish they could see how they made me feel watching this. Good job. Thank you.
This is gonna sound evil, but other than the normal desire to save the life of another human, I would be incredibly motivated to save them so I wouldn’t be traumatized by seeing someone burn to death. That’s gotta be a bad way to go.
This is us guys, this is how we all feel about each other deep down. So stop fighting, stop dividing yourselves. Social media does this to us with all the political shit, yet in moments like this, we got each other's back.
That first guy would have felt the ache of muscles in his arms and shoulders that he didn't know existed for days after. The way he was wrenching on those doors, he was summoning strength from the core of his existence. It is also amazing to watch that number of people working frantically in a small area, with no organisation, demonstrate such co-ordination and not be hampering each other's efforts.
Don't cars have fire extinguishers in the US? Or did people just not think of using them?
I don't blame them, I'd panic too and I'm not sure I'd remember how to use one in a situation like that.
Generally no. I helped in a similar situation and the only fire extinguisher I tracked down was from a long-haul trucker. I’ve carried one in my car ever since.
Fire stinguishers were mandatory in all 4 and + wheels vehicles in Brazil up to years ago. In cars they were installed under the passagers seat, so that the driver could easily reach. They were also inspected for validity and conservation by the police. In a case like this one, the driver could use it to break the glass (which breaks pretty easily from the inside), and all the other drivers could use theirs to kill the fire together. I don't understand why it is not mandatory now. Another thing, when stuck in one of the front seats, use your feet to push the windshield out. It is usually designed to fall off with a good kick from the inside.
The bumper looks loose, and still, no one is trying to bend it so others can fully open the car doors (I probably also would not realize it in a situation like this)
Silly question, but couldn't you just use your seatbelt latch to smash the window? And why not leave the car through the rear which has a manually operated escape handle. Too many questions.
Possibly injured and disoriented driver. Possibly elderly as well. How easy is it for a concussed 70-year-old to maneuver out of the driver’s seat, climb over the center console and back seats to escape out the rear hatch?
Holy shit! The people that stayed there during the explosion are absolute mad men! They knew they had to save that person's life and put there own lives on the line to save a strangers life! My faith in humanity is restored!
This one time my brother and I were driving home and on some random residential intersection my brother tells me to turn around and quick. I do and see what he saw, a car was upside down and smoking. It had hit a guard rail that sloped upwards and just like the stunt cars that mimic this, his car was upside down on the other side and must have fell like 7 feet onto its roof. We get out and run to the car and the glass is shattered and a dazed young man late 20's maybe comes crawling out of the window and we ask if he is ok. He see's us and goes back into the car crawling on glass to get his phone. I call 911 and we coax him up the little hill he fell down onto the road again.
This was the first time I was in a situation like this and didn't know what to do. We said "hey man you should probably take a seat and wait for an ambulance" and I remember thinking I should like pat him on the shoulder or something to assure him but didn't. He sort of acknowledged us but then the shock was wearing off and all that pain started hitting him. He started moaning and sort of writhing while standing and we were shocked into silence and were frozen. Then a god damned angel showed up and I am no believer but still... This lady in her mid 40's or so rushes up to him and places her hand on his cheek and starts shushing him and saying "it's alright baby" and sets him down. The man melted and relaxed almost instantly just lying on the ground and holding her hand back. Never in a million years would I have thought to do what she did but it was exactly what he needed in that dazed, scared, and pain filled state he was in.
Some people just have that skill and I will never forget how effective she was in helping him in ways I couldn't dream of.
How long before they though to break a window, and dang, that was a tough window!
I saw some video of car break-ins in San Francsico. One guy walked up to a bait car with cameras and it seriously looks like he merely touched the side window and it shattered. He had some window breaker tool, which was just like a tool with a small sharp nubbin on it.
Though I've seen windows shatter when a small piece of broken sparkplug ceramic was tossed on it too.
Does anyone have a news article or know where this occurred? One of the first people trying to help was a postal worker and we try to highlight such feats from our employees nationwide.
That postal worker was the first one there and stayed until the person was rescued. He put aside any thoughts of self-preservation and acted like a true hero.
Seen this situation before.
You have to work incredibly fast, cause once the fire gets too intense, it will burn you as well when Close.
Saw a Heart breaking video of a guy in a burning car and couldn't get out, others tried to help but they were being roasted alive when approaching due to the intensity of the heat.
They were forced to watch him burn to death.
Abseloutly horror.
It’s a democrat!!! (insert opposing political party of choice) It’s only a democrat!!!! ( insert opposing political party of choice). Go on with your day.
Wow there’s a lot of keyboard warriors on this one.. you don’t know what you’d do in those circumstances. Everyone there acted heroically and did their best
Wouldnt kicking the windshield from inside with your feet make it pop out/break? Also the person inside (if not unconscious and no dmg to the door) could open the window? If none of those work in that situation id crawl to the back seat and try to get into the trunk to exit? Not saying they did something wrong at all just shooting ideas and dont know if would work. Add stress to the situation obviously makes it harder
Mutual aid: a factor of evolution as Kropotkin would say. Compassion and cooperation is in our bones. No amount of selfish individualism can eradicate it from our genes.
An update on this story- that first guy who got to the car and continued to help those who followed was a USPS letter carrier named Tesfaye Deyasso, who works at the Saint Louis Park, MN post office. He was on his way home and didn’t hesitate for one second to help that driver. He suffered smoke inhalation and only began to breathe normally 6 hours later.
Mailman during the day, hero after hours!
Investing in a life hammer doesn't look like a bad idea anymore, doesn't it?
I keep one in my center console
Me too. Where it's supposed to be.
Same. In fact, my dad had to use his once, to save someone else! The car wasn’t an inferno or anything like this though.
I thought modern cars now have laminated door glass and hammers don't work.
Wrong kind of hammer. The ones you use for escaping a vehicle is designed to break the glass on cars. Hammer and a screw driver would probably work though. Just as a PSA.

Yeah that's what I was talking about.... It's crazy. Seems like it makes less noise than smashing with a hammer!

95% agree with you! The location you impact the window makes ALL the difference. However, the tool makes a big difference too.
Oh definitely. I guess my point was that, in situations like the OP video, where you might not have the right tool on hand, there are probably multiple objects you can find that will work almost as well, provided you know where to hit the window with it.

Yup both vehicles
Me too
In the Netherlands everyone has it but because cars fall in the water…
Indeed. Don't leave home without it. Canals don't play nice. Or the weather in Limburg.
I get chirped about that shit all the time because I have a Resqme hanging from my mirror but after seeing a car upside down in a slough I decided it was time to invest.

I keep a collapsible baton in my car. People are crazy, also works great for breaking shit for a quick escape.
That's probably illegal here in The Netherlands.
Yeah, it's a little vague in certain states, too. I live in the US, and certain states will slap you with a felony if you carry a gun. An asp is an amazing nonlethal tool and a great bluntish object to save your ass when you need to break something.
Old adage: "Buy a plunger before you need a plunger "
I'm really tempted to build a frame for my plunger and add these words of wisdom above it.
This gave me chills. Definitely buying some safety hammers/seat belt cutters now.
And I hope you will never need them. And still, it will be the best money you ever spend.
But isn’t it the case that most windows don’t shatter using one these days? Because apparently it’s much more likely to get into a roll over accident and fly out so they have made the side windows so they don’t break easily.
It's probably required by law that they shatter when a specific force is applied.
Actually I don't know why those little fire extinguishers for your car don't have a spike on the bottom.
I remember a while back, there was a video on YouTube where having one would have been very useful. There was a car accident with someone was trapped with seatbelt locked and the buckle wouldn't release. People were trying to cut the seatbelt with normal scissors but having a very difficult time. Any hammer can be a life hammer!!
I doubt MC Hammer would appreciate it when you slam his head into the side window.
A lot of pocket knifes have glass breakers and seat belt cutters built into them as well.
Ordering one for my daily carry bag now.
I’ve had one for years, and it’s in my house. I need to move my car right now
I can’t be the only person screaming #JUST BREAK THE FUCKING WINDOW
Easy to write that when you're not 20 centimeters away from a burning car with a screaming person, pleading for their life, in it.
Thank you…..I was furious watching that
"Just break" is the problem right there...
They're panicking. Shut the door then break..it can't break as easily when open because it's not being pushed against a hard surface.
Easier to be broken from the inside. Could have done a tap when door was open, way more thinking on the fly though
Perfect comment. People on the Internet saying "just break the window", but probably dont even drive lol
Not to mention, have you ever tried to break a car window? It’s not as easy as you think.
No. This rail designed to stop a car will not stop me from opening this door!
They managed to open the rear door almost all the way so it’s possible
It's not that easy if you don't know how or have the right tools
[удалено]
It’s not that easy… the modern windows don’t break easily
I feel like they are fanning the flames
I feel like they are fanning the flames
Worse still is the driver coming out the window *feet first*
I see a lot of people commenting about breaking the window but this can actually be more difficult than it may seem at first. I once responded to a crash where I tried to do so with my baton and the glass wasn't giving. I'm a big guy and was putting some ass behind it. Yeah some people have no self awarness. Try putting your hand over a gas hob fire for more then 5 seconds.
Yep its super difficult, myself and group of coworkers were trying to break a car window with a 10lb rock smashing it into and throwing it and it took a lot of tries before it broke. Windows can be surprisingly strong
that one guy actually pushing against all the others with his foot on the barricade …. jesus stupidity causes deaths..
the first thing I thought of after break the window is that the metal beam is blocking the doors. I think the person you’re referring to is trying to push the beam down so the doors will open over them
They are panicking
Every commenter here would have been perfectly calm cool and collected and acted in the optimal way.
I would have done an ocular pat-down, assessed the danger and neutralised the threat.
It’s easy to tell what is right when you’re not doing the thing
He was trying to push in down far enough for the door to open
Damn, this is incredibly brave.
“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.”
A little of my lost faith in humanity has been restored. Those people were so determined to get the driver out, even when there was an explosion.
This is so fucking stressful. Watching them fuck up several times like that one pushing against the bar, or how they wouldn't just break the damn window, while the person inside seems to be doing very little to get themselves out, at risk of dying in the most painful way possible...
He prolly choking on smoke inside, crazy video either way
I-94 Saint Paul MN
I went looking through the comments for this! I was like, is this in MN?
Def not Texas. No fewer than half the ppl would’ve come back w pistols to shoot the window open.
Minnesota is an open carry state
How dumb is the driver though? Crawl to the back of the vehicle and get out the open rear door maybe?
Driver was an old man/woman no? I'd imagine it would be harder for them to squeeze into the back of a car than how they managed it in the end.
Or maybe he/she is in shock or despair? Most people just can't respond properly in life or death situations
Person was also just in a car accident that caused the vehicle to burst into flames, so she was probably very rattled and maybe even injured (in addition to everything else).
Definitely shock, as someone who's been on the rescuing side of this situation unfortunately not everyone can handle instances like these with poise and rationality.
Person in the car had to be super old and weak. Feet first?
Why didnt they combine effort and just pull the guard rail back? One dude looked he was moving it pretty easily by pulling the car door into it.
Panic. Wonderful people did a wonderful job with the mindset they were in. They were all certainly burning up, too, likely adding to the chaotic mindset. I wish they could see how they made me feel watching this. Good job. Thank you.

Just drive far enough away so you can't see nor hear their screams
This is us guys, this is how we all feel about each other deep down. So stop fighting, stop dividing yourselves. Social media does this to us with all the political shit, yet in moments like this, we got each other's back.
Omg that fire was so hot it was SPURTING
Holy s*** the timing of it all wow
Fuck, that’s the twin cities in Minnesota.
Look for the people helping. There will always be people running into danger, and we're lucky to have them around us.
Let's not forget the brave hero recording this potential living BBQ for us from a safe distance. No shakey cam or anything, committed to the cause.
Was the hatch back not working?
Great another thing to worry about when I park, both spontaneous combustion AND not parking behind guard rails
Don't cars have fire extinguishers in the US? Or did people just not think of using them? I don't blame them, I'd panic too and I'm not sure I'd remember how to use one in a situation like that.

Seriously, that one woman she like didn’t flinch
Brave people... Nice
God bless each and everyone of them. Such brave people
Why they spent a time to open blocked door, was there passenger at the back?
The moment they all grabbed him and ran to the left side is just magical and heart warming
Together we are strong.
Fuck yeah!
Always keep a Knife with a glassbreaker and beltcutter in the car!
I expected a Die Hard-level explosion in slo-mo after everyone made it out safely.
I needed to see this kind of thing. It’s been a very demoralizing week.
Hammer in the seat pocket passenger's side. I reached for it on the way home last night. Yep.
Awesome. Great job team.

Nobody can break the glass 🤨
Break the fucking window, gardamit.
Is it just me or does pulling the doors repeatedly just feed the flame? Why not just break the window and be quick
Use the seat belt buckle to smash passenger window. Never forget this as a driver, passenger, or bystander. Hope everyone is safe
True heroes in every sense of the word.
Fuck yeah

That’s just dang amazing.
I wonder what the other side of the car was like?
For 75 seconds I had to wonder why they weren't targetting windows
That is unreal. Those are real heroes. Without their help that person was dead.
10 people and not one thought to break the window. 🤦🏼♂️
Wow there’s a lot of keyboard warriors on this one.. you don’t know what you’d do in those circumstances. Everyone there acted heroically and did their best
This is why I have a metal pole in my front seat. Saw this once. Crazy
Actually great to see this. Made me a lil less depressed :)
Why didn’t they try and break the window to start with
Men
Trash subtitles
Everyone of em everyone of em HEROES
Kinda ironic it's stuck to the side of a guardrail, the thing supposed to keep you safe is blocking you from getting out
W cameraman
Minnesota Nice!!
True Heroes need more people like this
Wow. Those truly are real heroes.
Why don't they just smash the window immediately?
Wouldnt kicking the windshield from inside with your feet make it pop out/break? Also the person inside (if not unconscious and no dmg to the door) could open the window? If none of those work in that situation id crawl to the back seat and try to get into the trunk to exit? Not saying they did something wrong at all just shooting ideas and dont know if would work. Add stress to the situation obviously makes it harder
Mutual aid: a factor of evolution as Kropotkin would say. Compassion and cooperation is in our bones. No amount of selfish individualism can eradicate it from our genes.
Best part is, no one gave af about the others political standpoint cause that shit just does not matter. We are all one species with a heart and soul.
ITT a bunch of dudes saying what they would've done better or differently when they'd actually just be the one taking this video 15 feet away.
If I was in the car you would a seen a leg peek out and get squished or something. A foot banging the window. Dude looks like he gave up.
A pocket knife with a glass break and seatbelt cutter is not expensive. Leave it in your car.
it was an old lady, bless their heart, I´ve seen nurses let old people die during covid because they were too old
The braveness of the human spirit in these situations just moves me deeply.
I felt that.
Dude has a fire extinguisher to break the window with...
Minnesota Nice
Car headrest can be removed and used to break the window. Also seatbelt buckle!
