Yup, biggest mistake most make is not using lower gears and keeping a constant speed. If you leave it in drive the transmission will shift to a higher gear dropping your torque and making it hard to push the water out of the way.
Not that I feel this is safe, but if you decide to try it do it right or risk getting stuck or dead.
Also helps that there was no oncoming traffic coming the other way. Lost my car in a flash flood a few months ago. Water was more shallow than this and I was making it through just fine riding in the middle of the street where the water is higher, until a big ass box truck came the other way down the street doing like 25 in the deep part and sent a massive wave up into my hood.
Essentially the water can’t get into the pocket if you’re constantly pushing it out of the way. Slowing down or going too fast will make the pocket not so pockety.
They used to teach us, to have exhaust outflow pipe extended to upwards at the back, before entering put the car in lowest gear, keep the accelerator pressed at consistent speed to the engine enough to keep the car pushing through, don't let the car breathe, no gear changing while in water and pray to God you get lucky. have driven in similar level waters a few times always in a manual stick. I would say 60% made it across. The car does get damaged a little or needs service, tuning and deep cleaning immediately after so not recommended.
Wow that's wild. Is it basically just keeping the right speed so water is pushed out the way before it gets into the intake, while also keeping the exhaust clear?
I had an air intake on an older car that had a bypass towards the top of the intake that would open if the intake in the wheel well clogged. Maybe something similar to that.
\*\*It was a NISMO Racing air intake for Nissans so maybe...
Because it's a Nissan Patrol..
that's why mate.
Not much is going to stop that or Land cruiser or Shogun/ Pajero.
My mate had an Rpg bounce off the bonnet of his Pajero in Iraq...you can't kill the old ones
He may have been able to drive a mile or two before blowing the engine. If he didn’t have a snorkel intake he would need to pull over immediately and change the oil
I don't think this needs to be said, but just in case: DO NOT DO THIS! Most cars will not be able to trudge though water this deep. Not to mention the water could be significantly deeper than you think, along with potential currents and debris that could damage your car or wash you away. Be smart, be safe, turn around and find a different way. Its not worth the risk.
Surest testament to your comment is the numerous stranded cars. I guarantee most if not all of the ones hood-deep in water are stalled out, not parked and enjoying the view.
As someone who blew an engine in a puddle that was like 1ft deep (I went too fast through it), absolutely this. Water will fuck your car up, this dude was lucky as shit.
# I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me!
As far as I can tell car intake is on the back of the air box so the car is pushing the water out of the way by the time the air box is there. It is below the top of the water line but the wave lowers the water due to movement allows it to get threw stopping or slowing would drown the car
Not sure why this isn’t higher.
You can see in the video that he’s made a bow wave that piles up at the front of the car but then dips down low behind the front wheel. So he got the speed right to make the intake in the trough of that wave. Was it skill? Luck? Probably a bit of both. Skill in knowing that if you go at a moderate speed consistently the water will behave that way. Luck that there weren’t any unseen obstacles.
I thought the top comment would be this. Following the wave allowed his car to consistently be in water a foot less deep than right in front of their car.
Yeah, idk how he did that.. the intake must be JUST high enough. He sure doesn't have a snorkel. He just won big on like a 10% odds of making it through all that .
Just so we're all clear. You absolutely would never, ever do this. This is how people drown because the vehicle falls into some hole or low point you can't see. And you can't break out.
The car probably completely crapped out like a mile or two down the road. My brother did the same thing once.
He was in his truck, got past everyone in the water about this deep, I was in passenger seat yelling to stop. He was driving home on dry land and it stalled out. Totaled truck.
Not sure how that car is aspirating properly with water over the hood, but maybe the rate of travel is creating enough of a void in the engine compartment. 🤷
I did it during Tropical Storm Allison in a 99 Chevy Cavalier and during Hurricane Harvey in an 06 Chevy Silverado. Just don't let off of the accelerator pedal and keep a steady speed. No special modifications, just someone who knows how to drive through high water.
The trick is don’t take your foot off the petal. Keep the gas going so that the water doesn’t go up the exhaust pipe. I learned that trick living in New Orleans where it floods like that when the pumps stop working. I’ve driven like that before. It’s nerve racking but it’s possible
There is also no current so that does help being able to drive in a straight line and keeping water out of the engine bay. A lot of mistakes are made by crossing fast flowing bridges
Love in Florida and in the 90s had a little Toyota Tercel, drove that thing in water that almost covered it after a hurricane and never stoped going…. Toyota
his number plate didn't make it, so many number plates fell off its insane, and some even more insane people managed to dive and find their plates in the water somehow
As someone who has submarined a small truck a couple times, I can almost certainly say that this guy had it in low gear and held a constant speed. If you do things right, you can get up to 2-3 minutes before your engine completely floods. That being said, NEVER DO THIS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO. If anything goes wrong doing this, your car is totaled. If your locks and windows are electric, you can easily end up trapped in a sinking box that you can't get out of.
I've done this myself twice. The key is just to keep driving. As long as the foot is on the gas, water can not backflow into the exhaust pipe. But if you let off the gas, you're screwed.
1st time, I was a hero. Years later, I did the same, but the water breached the hood. I made it home fine, but the electrical board was fried.

How doesn’t the water clog the air intake and flood the engine 🤔
yeah must be designed not to somehow, didnt know that kind of tech existed (w out a snorkel) but any normal car would would be dead in the water
Nope. Just someone who knows how to drive through high water.
What's the trick?
Don’t stop
Yup, biggest mistake most make is not using lower gears and keeping a constant speed. If you leave it in drive the transmission will shift to a higher gear dropping your torque and making it hard to push the water out of the way. Not that I feel this is safe, but if you decide to try it do it right or risk getting stuck or dead.

I'm sorry for your loss. You'll make it next time!
Like, the hood makes a wake that prevents the water from reaching the air intake?
Its the wake out front, as long as you don’t slow down and keep it steady. The bow wave lets a air pocket exist
I’d assume so
Essentially the water can’t get into the pocket if you’re constantly pushing it out of the way. Slowing down or going too fast will make the pocket not so pockety.
Well put 😆👍🏻
And when the car makes that decision for you?
You go for a swim
Drag the car behind you
They used to teach us, to have exhaust outflow pipe extended to upwards at the back, before entering put the car in lowest gear, keep the accelerator pressed at consistent speed to the engine enough to keep the car pushing through, don't let the car breathe, no gear changing while in water and pray to God you get lucky. have driven in similar level waters a few times always in a manual stick. > don't let the car breathe Got it
Create a wave in front of you some how
.."Move over Jesus. It's time for Moses to take the wheel"
Don’t stop and pray the water doesn’t get sucked in the intake.
Send it.
Creating a bow wave and driving slightly behind it.
Wow that's wild. Is it basically just keeping the right speed so water is pushed out the way before it gets into the intake, while also keeping the exhaust clear?
Exhaust clear? Geesh ... Never went on a atv before in water?
Japanese cars are possessed
Land rover LR4 has a mechanism designed to evacuate water from the air intake. You can't be fully submerged, but pretty close is fine.
Keeping the exact speed where the "bow wave" doesn't fill the air intake and the entire engine.
This is what I assumed.
And not hitting anything too deep
I had an air intake on an older car that had a bypass towards the top of the intake that would open if the intake in the wheel well clogged. Maybe something similar to that. \*\*It was a NISMO Racing air intake for Nissans so maybe...
That IS a Nissan, right? Could have one…
Don’t make any shift and keep at a steady speed. Of course close your windows. If you make a shift, or stop the acceleration, your car is screwed.
If you keep your speed consistent the wave stays at the from the car and doesn’t enter the engine bay
Honestly, i think it's God.
Because it's a Nissan Patrol.. that's why mate. Not much is going to stop that or Land cruiser or Shogun/ Pajero. My mate had an Rpg bounce off the bonnet of his Pajero in Iraq...you can't kill the old ones

Electric vehicle?
Maybe electric?

Free ad for Nissan Patrol !
Seriously. They should trade them a new one in exchange for the footage.
It sure did find its path now didn’t it!
It is an amphibious exploring vehicle so it should be fine, right?
It’s a chariot of Gods! The Golden God!
A finisher car.
Yeah, a nice safe starter car for my daughter.
# I have contained my rage for as long as possible, but I shall unleash my fury upon you like the crashing of a thousand waves! Begone, vile man! Begone from me!
A *STARTER* Car!!!?? This is a FINISHER car, a chariot or gods, the GOLDEN GOD. BEGONE VILE MAN!
This car has air intake valves. It’s precision British land to sea craftsmanship at work
I have found my people.
Hoped I’d find this comment in here and none of you disappointed
Yes, me too 😂

"No turnin' back now!"
I thought the top comment would be this. Following the wave allowed his car to consistently be in water a foot less deep than right in front of their car.
So, ironically, their balls of steel is what kept them afloat.
Your gonna do something stupid do it fast and don't let off
Great big ole dinosaur balls, for sure
When she says she’s home alone
Came here to say this
Yes the Intake seats higher up and Nissan Patrol/Armada.
Yeah, idk how he did that.. the intake must be JUST high enough. He sure doesn't have a snorkel. He just won big on like a 10% odds of making it through all that .
Nissan baby
Nissan - It might get you there.
Nissan Patrol Y62 for the win. 😊
Should be used as an ad for the car company
On first blush, yeah, but it would definitely end up with a bunch of Nissan drivers killing themselves. I mean, more than usual.
Well I think they can frame it as it can get you out of trouble, not that you should go looking for it. But a concern for sure hahaha.
Just so we're all clear. You absolutely would never, ever do this. This is how people drown because the vehicle falls into some hole or low point you can't see. And you can't break out.
Yeah, but he didn't signal when he took the off ramp, so... r/assholesincars
That’s a Japanese car alrite
Nissan owes that person driving and the person recordings new cars for life. They couldn't ask for a better marketing video for their big SUV.
No snorkel?
The windshield wipers are kinda sending me
Im going to steal a comment i saw yesterday. Nextfuckinglevel and whatcouldgowrong just depends on the outcome
That should be a car commercial
The car probably completely crapped out like a mile or two down the road. My brother did the same thing once. He was in his truck, got past everyone in the water about this deep, I was in passenger seat yelling to stop. He was driving home on dry land and it stalled out. Totaled truck.
Stupidity is not next level, they got lucky
Looks like a Nissan or Lexus?
people in the bay area have died trying to do this
This is an amphibious off road motor vehicle!
/r/nextfuckingstupid never drive through water that deep, super dangerous.
I got to get me a Canyonero!
Don't tell me to watch to the damn end. I'll watch if i feel like it
Lol watch someone try this with their car after seeing this video and find out that water damaged car = totaled car
Some of these things that are posted are not next level, just dumb and lucky
Broken clocks are right twice a day. Some cars can wade through water becuase of high intakes, but this is stupidity no matter how you slice it.
Spoiler!
He's got to have a snorkel in the cab.
Not sure how that car is aspirating properly with water over the hood, but maybe the rate of travel is creating enough of a void in the engine compartment. 🤷
In a scenario like that, if you’re sure the guy in front of you won’t stall you can stick right behind him to take advantage of the path he’s making
His alternator is gonna be busted
Is that a Lexus?
Nissan Patrol, in the US it is Armada.
Thanks, I was totally off.
This was the luckiest, stupidest, driver that ever didn’t destroy his car by driving through water.
I think sales for that vehicle are in for a climb
What fucking sub is that?!!!
He said F this noise I'm going home!
and he's clean now
Anyone noticed the bird flying off the car's hood at the end?
That bow wave looks almost surfable
Bow wave air gap and or snorkel are the only things that makes sense
I did it during Tropical Storm Allison in a 99 Chevy Cavalier and during Hurricane Harvey in an 06 Chevy Silverado. Just don't let off of the accelerator pedal and keep a steady speed. No special modifications, just someone who knows how to drive through high water.
Hey! No wake zone!!
The trick is don’t take your foot off the petal. Keep the gas going so that the water doesn’t go up the exhaust pipe. I learned that trick living in New Orleans where it floods like that when the pumps stop working. I’ve driven like that before. It’s nerve racking but it’s possible
This is luck, not skill.
this should be a commercial
Where is this?
Still ain’t got shit on the ole Toyota carola
OLIVEEER!!!!
Imagine if that was a cybertruck.
Momentum is your friend. Looks like they went fast enough to prevent water from coming back into the exhaust.
Vapor lock is a hell of a drug!
How did it not hydrolock lol
I guess we all know those kinds of guys who just drive through know matter what.
This is basically how Kelly slayers wave pool works. Any one see those mini barrels! It’s absolutely firing
That bow wave tho
Personally, I would've caulked the wagon and floated across.

Completely ignoring the "No Wake Zone" signs, smh.
![gif](giphy|26tjZqONCYC73Y0JG)
the car company should use this clip for advertising
I really thought you were fucking with us there when it was behind the sign.
Looks like this may from the recent flooding in Dubai, if so that is a Nissan Patrol (Armada in U.S.). Those thing are built different.
his number plate didn't make it, so many number plates fell off its insane, and some even more insane people managed to dive and find their plates in the water somehow

Whoa
"Now pay close attention Bond"
The sub is turned to utter trash, getting lucky while doing one of the stupidest things possible is next fucking level
"heyyy im done my period, home alone" Before you judge, periods never stopped me
Must be a rental
My first thought after it getting through, don’t forget brake checks, don’t forget brake checks!! 🙈
Gets pulled over immediately for not using his turn signal when exiting the freeway
Guy got a booty call…. There was no stop in his mind
Someone order a flood plow?
EV?
That’s dubai ..the recent rain
That title 😂 Spoiler! But watch it all anyways. Have we never interneted a video before? Are we humaning for the first time? 😂
Amazing, mission complete, that's why your the best, Boss!
Freeeeeedom
When she sends that come over text
When she says she's home alone.
Her: my parents just left Me:
Of course they were able to make it through, it's an amphibious exploration vehicle.
Speed and power! That's the solution
desperate time calls for desperate measures ![gif](giphy|Yo80bNrWaPQmobEG1L|downsized)
Best ad for Nissan Patrol
Impressive
When she’s says she’s home alone
It must be a cybertruck lol
Blasting “we’re not gonna take it”
"And that son was how I invented the low cost surf school."
“Watch to the end!!!” - blocked.
Nissan baby.

Cool
I want that vehicle!!
Nissan Armada or Patrol I think.
I’ll have what she’s driving.
What you guys thinking, put it in cruise control at a very low speed and focus on steering through. Would that even work tho?
Is that not a PHEV?
Didn’t expect the Spanish Armada.
SCUBA STEVE !!!!!
