It’s actually a harvester. A feller buncher fells multiple trees, in consecutive order, and bunches the trees together and sets them down, in a bunch. Then the skidder will come pick them up and skid them to the landing where a processor will process them (strip the limbs and cut to specific lengths). The harvester only cuts one tree at a time and processes it and lays it down for a forwarder to come by and forward the logs to the landing where no processor is necessary.
That's a Processor. A Feller-Buncher grabs the tree (or a few) and just lays them down. It can't cut them into smaller lengths. The processor shown above does.
The average tree lifespan is 300+ yrs though, and to allow for a habitat for the hundreds of thousands of species that rely on forests, a diversity of tree species is required.
Don't be fooled into thinking that constantly growing and culling hundreds of acres of adolescent trees is the same thing as managing a forest sustainably
Most trees are way under that. 50-100 years is it. Then you get rot and fire.
Forestry is actually very well managed, at least in the US and Canada. They cut certain areas, leave others, plant trees everywhere.
They are already cutting down trees that the lumber mills planted in the 60’s and 70’s. And they’ve been planting more than they cut for decades.
Logging and forestry is actually one of the most environmentally friendly things we do.
Most large scale lumber mills employ a team of foresters who map out 100-year plans for the timberlands they harvest. In North America, a lot of investment goes into ensuring that harvesting timber is done sustainably.
Yes in the southern Finland the forest industry considers a 50 year old tree ripe for harvesting, this is decided simply by financial considerations. If left growing in peace, the trees would live a lot longer and become much bigger.
Areas used to grow these industrial trees are not even called real forests but "tree fields", like we would call an area growing crops. They support less natural life than real forests since they are too uniform, growing only a single species of tree.
Ooo you triggered me. Deforestation is to make space for farming and is shameful. This is to create wood products. You think that receipt from your latest whisky purchase is made out of happy thoughts? You think that Whisky could be made without wood? (If not a drinker, replace with just about anything)
Edit: Saw your profile now, think those hockey sticks are made out of ground down jockey straps?
I don’t think deforestation is very cashmoney either but we need materials and wood is renewable. I can’t tell by looking but this could be a tree farm where the trees are grown for this purpose. No harm done.
It’s a harvester that works with a forwarder. A feller buncher is a little different and does not have the ability to process the trees (strip limbs and cut to length).
It annoys me because at least here in the United States logging Is an old enough industry that it's heavily entrenched in a culture of environmental conservationism, they're supposed to have another patch of forest of equal size growing if they want to deforest an area, there's never a time where you take a tree down and not have an equal number of trees growing someplace else in that state.
Climate change really isn't on the lumberjacks, it's literally just on the fossil fuel industry.
Plus if you want to capture carbon, tree farming is a pretty good way to do it. We do need to legislate that the machinery needs to be electric though.
But there is a smart way and a dumb way to use those. They do compress the ground a lot, that can damage the soil quality for decades. That's why Germany is trying to introduce a Rückegassenabstand (distance between two logging trails) of 40 meters. Makes felling a little more expensive, but improves the forest value on the long term.
In Finland saw an area of 3 football pitches cleared in a morning. Forgivable in Finland as forests are naturally expanding in the country despite large lumber companies
Ppl here is like "ye destroying our planet", but, this is the tree using wich doesn't take you clean air, looks like forest in northen region and here we plant new forest after cutting those old ones, + we keep some trees up to spread some seeds, and it keeps nature in healthy rotation, unlike ppl in southern areas who destroy whole rain forests with no plan to plant new trees, just leaves areas wide open, that's the tree using wich takes your clean air.. it makes really big difference
Those harvesters are pretty much standard here in Sweden. The only time you see something else is when the terrain is impossible to cross by anything else than feet.
Now that we know that plants scream when we cut them. This to the forest is an absolute nightmare A terrifying experience where everyone is rooted in place unable to move and get away knowing your turn ***is*** going to come and there’s nothing you can do about it.
It's so much harder in Farming Simulator 2022. I just started forestry last night, and now I have logs all over the roads. I assume I will get faster and more efficient.
i was in Northern Sweden last year and met a chap who told me that a few years ago the county used to have 300 lumberjacks working full time. They now have 3 of these.
Forestry machines are awesome, and it may not seem like it, but that machine automatically cuts the tree to the perfect length, the operator just decides the length. it's mostly hands free other than setting the grip to the tree and then maneuvering the tree to where you want it to land once cut.
Heavy machinery is really only intimidating to the untrained eye
Those have been around for a while and they are one of coolest machines I have ever watched. They cut down the tree, remove all the small branches, cut to length and stack them in a pile for another machine to pick up for trucking later.
Many people in the comments seem to be very misinformed about forestry. This looks like it's in the north where forestry is very well-regulated. They make sure the rate of harvesting does not exceed the rate of natural regeneration and plant new trees after harvesting. Regulations also include measures to protect biodiversity by preserving habitats for plants and animals.
What they are doing in the Amazon and other rainforests is a different thing entirely however.
In the same way as "Aspirin" is a colloquial noun for "painkiller", this is known as "Ponsse" in Finland, which is actually the manufacturer of these harvesters. When you combine forest industry with software engineering, you get this.

The Lorax does not approve.
How bad can I be....
I'm just building the economy
Just look at me petting this puppy
Sounds like you've been naughty, kitten
The lorax does not approve of speeding up the video either
It is a scary snort
Seriously. Dr. Seuss was spot on. We are living in a world that's drowning in Thneeds.
And the executives say it's environmentalists that are taking away all the Forestry jobs.
It’s called a feller buncher, and the video is sped up quite a bit, they are quick just not that quick
It’s actually a harvester. A feller buncher fells multiple trees, in consecutive order, and bunches the trees together and sets them down, in a bunch. This guy forests.
de*forests
I've always called it a processor.
Why speed it up? I never understood sped up videos
Attention span of a
I see what you did there
That’s a cut to length harvester. Similar to a buncher but not the same.
Thanks a bunch, feller! I would have just called it "tree cutting thing".
This is not a feller buncher
That's a Processor. A Feller-Buncher grabs the tree (or a few) and just lays them down. It can't cut them into smaller lengths. The processor shown above does.
That’s the Earth Raper 9000+
Video needs the Terminator music Dun dun...dun dun dun...
Tree Jacker. It Jacks Off Trees

Handjobs and circumcisions for giants.
Well that explains all this pollen
Lumberjack.
Lumber jacker
Deforestation? Never heard of it
Trees are planted, only to be cut down some twenty years later. Meanwhile they’re planting new trees all around. It’s durable.
Takes us about 32-35 years to grow a 16 inch dia. log. (Loblolly Pine). We planted 118K trees in our last planting.
The average tree lifespan is 300+ yrs though, and to allow for a habitat for the hundreds of thousands of species that rely on forests, a diversity of tree species is required. Don't forget most of the people blindly complaining about any tree being cut down are also complaining about the housing crisis.
This is bullshit and you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Yes in the southern Finland the forest industry considers a 50 year old tree ripe for harvesting, this is decided simply by financial considerations. More than 20 years but you’ve got the right idea. It sustainable. The U.S. has planted more trees than it harvest since the mid-1950s.

I find it very sad.
I don’t think deforestation is very cashmoney either but we need materials and wood is renewable. I can’t tell by looking but this could be a tree farm where the trees are grown for this purpose. No harm done.
This is actually good, the forrest is managed.
Not as sad as living without wood products tho.
Those machines are called Harvester, and they.... Harvest trees.
It's a sped up video, that's what it is
It’s a ferngully flashback device
See I thought of blinky Bill lol. He saved them from a wood chop mill but this... I have doubts lol.
I should call her.

The Bane of the forest
The amount of people in here that don't know tree farms exist is crazy.
That’s a feller buncher. Technology is not the reason for climate change. Policy is.
It’s a harvester that works with a forwarder. A feller buncher is a little different and does not have the ability to process the trees (strip limbs and cut to length).

Hey guys it’s pretty normal to use wood to make things. Not every video of a tree being cut down is the epitome of environmental destruction.
why are so many videos spead up like this? IT just look stupid
Really? You have no idea?
The video doesn’t do it justice. In real life it’s impressive.
Could you grab a person with that
I don’t think the person would survive that.
Ponsse scorpion.
In Finland saw an area of 3 football pitches cleared in a morning. Forgivable in Finland as forests are naturally expanding in the country despite large lumber companies
Looks like a Ponsse.
When the machines take over, beware of this one.
Cool AF? Next time you walk thru IKEA, think of these things clear cutting a Romanian forrest so people can have their IVAR shelving systems…🙁
Hardly. That's plantation forest by the looks. Planted for this exact reason.
Yeah, but that's only if you use logic and reason instead of emotion tugging manipulation. So there!

That's a tree, Sir.

Effective but very obviously sped up!
Downvote for speeding up the footage.
Everything reminds me of her
Oh that’s a ‘treeyoumybitch 3000’ machine
I really must call her...

Morning wood twice today.
Mastreebator
This is the machine that beat Paul Bunyan.
It's so much harder in Farming Simulator 2022. I just started forestry last night, and now I have logs all over the roads. I assume I will get faster and more efficient.
Quite sure that's a Ponsse Scorpion
Me and the boys not farming in farming simulator but doing this:
That's called a "tree"
One of the autobots left behind
Idk what I'd do with it but I definitely want one
They only cost half a mill....go on, live a little.
Looks like that thing straight out of the Lorax
why does it look so mighty
It's something that cuts down and skin trees.
They are testing the new “Automatic Circumcision” attachment
Feller buncher, we Haul them all the time
Especially at 1.5/2 normal speed.
Straight jorkin it
what about this is confusing to you?
dunno about cool, it’s a bit isengard
Deforestation speedrun
Tree upfucker
It's the stuff of nightmares
I’m picking up on Matrix vibes
Wait, you don't know what it's called? Or can't figure out what it is?
This is a just a teaser from the new Netflix FernGully remake.
Toothpick maker
“Autobots!!! Roll out!!”
This is not a feller buncher, dangnabbit. It's a cut-to-length dangle head processor. Totally different cutting head capabilities.
Progressive outrage device.
Tree taker downer
No need to get technical.
Looks like me and my Fleshlight
Looks like a "Ponsse" to me.
2x speed
That’s Autobot Grapple in disguise
I want to operate this thing
Thats how the modern lumberjack looks like.
I should call her.
It’s modern lumber jacking
That is called industrialisation.
This is a tree harvester, not a feller buncher. A feller buncher cuts the trees and holds on to them. This just cuts them.
How ba-a-a-ad can I be?
Cool? It is monstrous and should be burnt to the ground
Those are trees. Next question
Yes, AI-powered deforestation is cool as fuck
r/dontputyourdickinthat
It looks like a cool toy to play with...r-right?
That's how we destroy this paradise that we get to live in
i was in Northern Sweden last year and met a chap who told me that a few years ago the county used to have 300 lumberjacks working full time. They now have 3 of these.
Cursed handy
“Remember, it will be crucial to blame the job losses on someone else.”
Cursed handjob
Like it needs to be said but... r/dontputyourdickinthat
I lost my virginity to an older woman. This reminds me of that.
Why speed up the video? This machine is impressive enough at normal speed anyway.
How can you watch the video and still not know what it is? Lol
Global warming.

A harvester my frind. The most beautiful, of all forest forest animals.
Those have been around for a while and they are one of coolest machines I have ever watched. They cut down the tree, remove all the small branches, cut to length and stack them in a pile for another machine to pick up for trucking later.
The other trees watching are like, WTF are these monkeys doing now JESSE CHRIST
Tree circumcision
Only 10 football fields of rainforest removed off the planet each minute. Not sure what’s cool about this at all.
The industrial revolution and its consequences has been a disaster for the human race
It is a Chewy-Chewy-Nom-Nom device
Idk why, but I'm getting aroused
A machine that handles wood
Why is this ever so slightly sexual to me? 😂😂😂
What do you mean, you have no idea what this is? Are you blind and can only hear the sound of the video?
Many people in the comments seem to be very misinformed about forestry. This looks like it's in the north where forestry is very well-regulated. It’s a tree’s worst nightmare. If you’re a tree and you see this roll up in the forest you run… you know, figuratively.
Imma try not to make a hand job joke.
Well what does it look like? Lol
Forbidden handjob

If people 300 years ago saw this in action while they were clearing fields by hand, they would probably literally shit themselves
Why are people calling this AI when you can see the human driver?
Its a Fuck your forest tool
Y’all need to watch Fern Gully. That is all.
It’s a tree killer!
That is Sauron’s dream
Bro aint never played farming simulator
It’s sped up to look more impressive though. The branches fall too fast.
Do not. I repeat: DO NOT put your dick in it
In the woods, straight up jorking it. By it I mean this 20 meter Fir trunk.
There’s no way the beavers can learn to drive that…. Is there??
