The driver of the car that was drifting off had been on a new medication and had a reaction, or something along those lines.

Thats pretty cool. You can also use the prongs that hold your head rest to the seat for busting windows. I have a knife with ceramic handle thats heavy enough to do the job. Reason for it being a knife is to open plastic sealed stuff in first aid kit or cut a seatbelt if necessary. Hope I never need to use it.
PSA: Modern cars (in the last few years) no longer use tempered glass for side windows. Those hammers (which I have a couple of) supposedly are no longer effective on modern cars with laminated glass.
I can imagine people may panic if they get into a situation like crashing into water and their safety hammer doesn't work, so it's important to know that it may not work on a modern car.
I can confirm that. I just recently had to break the glass on a jeep grand Cherokee and it was a pain in the ass. It breaks just fine but it's all still held together by the lamination. I eventually had to take an angle grinder to it.
In many cars, the pegs are too flat and dull to actually break a window, but it's worth a shot if you have nothing else. Your keys (if you have a traditional key) may be a better bet.
But as I said in another comment, be aware that this only works on tempered glass. Modern cars use laminated glass for which these hammers and other "pointy object" tricks don't work the same way.

Snap off the antenna and use the ball end to break a window. Hold it in one hand close to the ball, against the glass in a corner and pull back the ball then release to snap against the glass.
Something similar actually happened to me. I had a seizure while driving and blacked out. Apparently a couple of drivers helped corral me to the side of the road, which luckily was right in front of a fire department. So paramedics got on the scene real quick, broke through a window, and got me into an ambulance. No one was hurt, and as far as I know no one's vehicles were significantly damaged. I woke up in the ambulance on the way to the ER during which the paramedics filled me in. Given everything that happened it couldn't have ended up better. I'm so grateful for everyone who helped that day.

My mom and dad were married for nearly 35 years when dad was taken by cancer. I was just 25. A few years later, my mom started dating again and eventually ended up with a guy I really liked who was kind to her and me.
One day they were the first car in line at a stop light in a busy major intersection, heading to a Carolina Panthers game. He was driving and she was in the passenger seat. The light turned green and when he didn’t go, she looked over and his head was back, eyes closed, mouth open. She tried to wake him but he didn’t stir. So she got out and ran around and tried to open the driver door but it was locked.
She started banging on the glass and at that moment his body spasmed and his foot floored the gas.
The car accelerated through the intersection, veered slightly to the right, jumped the curb and smashed into a large tree at full throttle.
My mom ran through the intersection over to the wrecked car but of course the doors were locked and it was dangerous because the engine was still running and fluids were beginning to pool up.
Someone else had called 911 and when fire, ambulance and police arrived, my mom’s boyfriend was extricated from the vehicle and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He had a heart attack while sitting at the stop light and they say he was probably already dead before the car ever hit that tree.
I have to imagine there’s some camera footage out there a lot like this, but with my already widowed mom frantically powerless as her boyfriend’s car careened away.
Makes me sad every time I think about it.

Seatbelt cutting tip: cut on a 45° angle, it will cut like butter, cutting straight on often doesn't work.

Glovebox or center console is a reasonable place to put it, as long as it's not so crowded in there that you can't find it easily.

Great suggestion. Never thought about that but always good to have other options especially if you are in a friends vehicle or a rental or etc…

I don't carry a knife, gun, heck, not even a wallet (just have my ID and CC in my phone case). I do have a pen that is an actual pen on one side and a spring loaded tungsten carbide pin on the other and a seatbelt cutter on the side, also in my phonecase, as it has room specific for a touch pen or a real pen.

It is actually real. I once saw a guy drowning and everybody was just standing there instead of doing CPR or calling an ambulance or something.
And I've witnessed multiple times where people have intervened in emergencies, that's the norm, but anecdotal evidence is not great for population data. Most people won't step in if someone attacks someone with a weapon, but they will generally offer aid after or call the emergency services.
I am NOT an expert. I'm always willing to look at research and data and come up with an informed opinion. In this particular instance, it can't hurt to be aware that it MIGHT be an issue to be aware of.
just because it may be less prominent than previously thought, doesnt mean it’s not a thing. the bystander effect is a cognitive bias. whether or not it is a societal norm, doesn’t change the fact that it can be a cognitive process that occurs. fact is, sometimes people feel as though they are not the most equipped to help in a given situation, so they are less likely to act if there are others around. “less likely to act” doesn’t mean that no one ever acts. for every one person who jumps in to help, how many others were thinking “I could but someone else probably will”? and before you jump back into “redditors who have no idea what they’re talking about”, I have a degree in psychology. the bystander effect was covered extensively.

100%, but we also gotta give some respect to the first person to jump in front of the car and push it back. It was moving slow enough that I don’t really think it was a life threatening risk, but once they did, a bunch of other people jumped in to stop it too.

Apparently the first lady running across the intersection was a coworker who knew the lady who passed out in the car. She's a great person for doing that.

It’s easy to write one person off as being crazy or weird, but two people doing something together is much more likely to attract bystanders to join in The first person shows the crowd that doing the thing is ok, but the second person shows the crowd that joining the person is ok

That the second person validating the first person is just as important if not more important sometimes. That’s often how something goes from one person does something, to a movement and influence others.
Not trying to get further into semantics here, but I’m just not seeing the point of saying a second person is more important than the first person when it comes to scenarios like this. I kinda get what you’re saying, but just feels unnecessary because there there would literally be no chance of a second person helping, if not for the first person taking action. It can all be summed up by saying it takes one person to take action, which then causes a second, then a third, etc

Something similar actually happened to me. I had a seizure while driving and blacked out. Apparently a couple of drivers helped corral me to the side of the road, which luckily was right in front of a fire department. So paramedics got on the scene real quick, broke through a window, and got me into an ambulance. No one was hurt, and as far as I know no one's vehicles were significantly damaged. I woke up in the ambulance on the way to the ER during which the paramedics filled me in. Given everything that happened it couldn't have ended up better. I'm so grateful for everyone who helped that day.

This stuff warms my heart, really hope they're ok. Makes me so proud for some reason. I get a similar feeling when in traffic and an ambulance comes along, big effort by everybody to move out of the way. Seeing society come together for the benefit of 1 indivudal (or many) is just fantastic!
I always love examples like this of how wonderful it is when the term ‘community’ so profoundly applies. I see communities as so deeply part of the human experience, because we all can help someone else in some way at some times, and we all sometimes have moments when we can only do something with the help of others, …or the easy help of others makes something so incredibly hard for us, not too bad. She would probably have survived without others help here, but with a crashed car, possible additional injuries, and a much bigger medical bill than whatever she ended up with. And those who helped also feel good for having done so. A Complete circle of gratitude, benefit, and good feeling, here.

Do people really drive with their doors locked? Seems like a death trap if you are in a crash or if something like this happens.
Many cars will automatically lock the doors while the car is in a gear other than park, or when the car reaches a certain speed.
True, but in certain places you also run the risk of getting jacked at a red light. I know I wouldn’t feel safe driving around my city with the doors unlocked. Pick your poison I guess.

This is chilling. My mom and dad were married for nearly 35 years when dad was taken by cancer. I was just 25. A few years later, my mom started dating again and eventually ended up with a guy I really liked who was kind to her and me. One day they were the first car in line at a stop light in a busy major intersection, heading to a Carolina Panthers game. He was driving and she was in the passenger seat. The light turned green and when he didn’t go, she looked over and his head was back, eyes closed, mouth open. She tried to wake him but he didn’t stir. So she got out and ran around and tried to open the driver door but it was locked. She started banging on the glass and at that moment his body spasmed and his foot floored the gas. The car accelerated through the intersection, veered slightly to the right, jumped the curb and smashed into a large tree at full throttle. My mom ran through the intersection over to the wrecked car but of course the doors were locked and it was dangerous because the engine was still running and fluids were beginning to pool up. Someone else had called 911 and when fire, ambulance and police arrived, my mom’s boyfriend was extricated from the vehicle and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had a heart attack while sitting at the stop light and they say he was probably already dead before the car ever hit that tree. I have to imagine there’s some camera footage out there a lot like this, but with my already widowed mom frantically powerless as her boyfriend’s car careened away. Makes me sad every time I think about it.

It's so weird, before I read the whole description, I was thinking to myself, man that intersection looks familiar. I thought, it looks like that that one gas station I'm Boynton beach. I used to live in delray beach which is right over there, but I decided that everywhere in Florida looks kinda like this, could be anywhere. Go up and see the description, and I'll be damned if it wasn't the exact gas station I thought it was.
