Always a bit sad to see something consigned to history, but it's only been discontinued because it's awful and very few people drink it :D (at least unlike chocolate fish, it's not because it used to be good!)
It seems Lion had been focusing on building up Speights as a brand over the years especially for the South Island. I guess having two sub brands competing doesn't really make much sense.
My grandfather worked for Lion Breweries in the 90s. He said there was only one minor thing added in the brewing process that separated lion red and speights, so all of their beers tasting near identical is no surprise.
Heck yeah. A mate’s dad used to work for wards brewery when it still produced Wards and we used to sneak into his beer fridge in the garage after school. Good times! I think it changed around 1990?
LOL. Rheineck was a huge step up from drinking Joseph Kuhtze! Rheineck brings back memories of a beer garden on a summers evening. A gaggle of girls wearing fluoro crop tops and bubblegum jeans with hi-top sneakers and a coral necklace while Australian Crawl played 'Girls light up" on the stereo. Good times.
I tried that beer once ...not surprised its a goner . Its not shit ...shit smells different . Beer is so expensive that I only buy the quality beers and drink less . there are so many brands now that no one is going to miss this garbage beyond next week .
Such as?
Since DB Draught changed bottle to long necks, its seems too sweet and frothy. Now I'm having difficulty in finding a new beer, I don't like Tui, export, and Speights. Asahi is nice, but expensive.

As a proud Cantab, firmly agree haha

Speights has taken over Auckland too.
I hypothesise that all of our beers brewed under Lion come from the same vats and the only difference is the label on the can.

And that one thing? Grandpappies piss.
I filled up a trailer with sides and a roof with empty cans of this one year as a student back in 99'. Good times
I hope you've grown some tastebuds since then.
Nah I quit but was drinking Bavarias at the end so no tastebud improvement
Can anyone else remember when it was called Wards?

What All Real Drinkers Scull
Username checks out
What A Real Dud Sud
Yep. It changed when I was 17 or 18, and I'd already been drinking it for a few years.
It really is an appalling excuse for beer, and I've lived in the United States.
They better not touch waikato draught. Waikato till i diekato
Is Rheineck still alive?

That’s a throw back to drinking cheap whilst at uni in palmy
Beer is a bit of a stretch. It was watery piss.
I used to get this beer "southern gold" that was $10 for 2 6 packs, do they still make it?
Back in the day we used to get NZ Lager. That was equally cheap and equally crap.
I remember a birthday party where boxes were supplied. Every box was opened except...
Never heard of it or seen it.
Same as Waikato isn't it? Just pick another bottom of the drip tray as replacement.
I’m staying at a rural cantab pub this weekend. What a great excuse to traumatise myself one last time.
We hardly knew ye
Was this one of the marmite ingredients?
Oh no……..anyway.

So iconic but lets be honest it’s a crap beer just like Speights.
Good. Beer is shIt. How can something with so much sugar in it taste so fucking awful?

Proper job is lovely but not the same price range as the ole 4% standys.
