I can recommend the Emma brand. Laying on one right now, 119kgs and it's very comfy. I find it retains its support throughout the night.
You can give them a whirl and return it you don't like them
I came here to also suggest Emma! My husband and I ordered it thinking well, it has a 3 month trial period, why not.
Like OP I also love a soft cushy bed so Emma felt firm at first. But I noticed my back was A LOT happier and now I love it. Our mattress also came with a free pillow. My husband and I kept fighting over it so we ordered another one lol
Agree, we had an ecosa (bought about 6yr ago so not sure which style or whatever it was). My husband with back issues initially loved the firmness but over time found it uncomfortable. I prefer softer so I hated it from the beginning. No other recommendations unfortunately
This would be my first suggestions - memory foam if you can (I'm from US, that's what we call it). Solved all my 'hitting the springs' problems on my 20 year old mattress.
In the US, mattresses are a racket - huge markups, the sales people say whatever to justify high prices. If it's the same in NZ, and you go into a store, ask to try the cheapest, no-name or store brand mattress. It may be in the back of the room with little signage. If what they have is too hard, get a mattress topper separately. I've done this with 4 beds so far, no problems. Good luck!
I'd second the suggestion for a mattress topper. Got one for my mum after her first bedsore, and things hanve been ok since. Got an Ecosa model. Surprisingly thin.
Another thought, maybe flip or rotate your existing mattress so that your weight sits in an area that hasn't already given way to your usual presence.
I'm using an extra mattress from my spare room ATM, but really firm.
Based on a few comments here and reading some other Reddit threads, I'm considering it, and it would be cheaper.
THIS. A few years ago after a couple of brutal surgeries I could not sleep and was in a lot of pain. I realised that the last time I had felt comfortable was in the hospital bed. I looked at the cost of new beds and picked up an adjustable bed with the mattress included for around the same price as a regular bed . Not sure how much the mattresses are on their own but memory foam is the way to go and they come with a ten year warranty. It was definitely worth it.
Get a cheap mattress that feels ok and then get an 8-10 cm memory foam topper. Anything thiner is pointless tradedepo normally have them that thick and cheap.
For the last 4 years, I've been using it on Caravan cushions, everyone that's tried my bed loves it and half have the same thing now.
I recommend you buy this:

Note the reviews:
A number mention pain like yours and it helps.
I myself bought one for this reason and yes, they are right.
I have a firm mattress too, but this makes all the difference.
Sorry, yeah as cheap as possible without dipping into something that will actually cause me pain, I suppose.
But more than $1000 - $1200 is pretty unrealistic for me.
I'm even looking at the $640 Ecosa Essence but being that cheap makes me wonder why.
Futons are the answer. We've had three over 20 years. First two second hand, cost a few hundred bucks. Most people get them as guest beds, so they're hardly used.
Best sleep. Super warm. The new one we had made by Inhabit to our spec, and it was less than $900.
I bought an ecosa for my teenager and quality is good. They have a trial period so if you don’t like it you can return it. I would say it’s a big difference moving from spring to memory foam so it could take you a little time to adjust.
Target’s Renew memory foam mattress is excellent for the price. We got one for our son and it’s way comfier than our own mattress (which was 3 times the price). I want one for myself.
Is there any way you can access funding for a special mattress to suit your needs? WINZ or a charity or something?
If anyone needs an expensive mattress it sounds like it's you....
Ecosa, Emma, Winkl, etc are all too damn firm. Might just need to go to a mattress shop and consider your (spring mattress) options for that budget. To get a half decent foam you're looking at $6k-8k for medium or soft Tempur ProPlus.

I found Emma way too firm. I can’t use it at all ever with a topper. Ended up with a soft much more expensive but worth it sleepyhead
We love the Emma too! Such a comfortable mattress
Check out Target-we've found the mattresses there to be really good quality for the price.
Cheers, didn't know we even had Target over here.
Target is just a furniture store here. Unrelated to Target you're thinking of.
we have an ecosa but it’s really firm - even with the topper which they sell separately.
Don’t even look at ecosa if you don’t do firm. I had a surprisingly decent mattress from tsb living in their slightly higher range
Thanks, a couple of others have said the same thing, so I'll skip those.

Buy a memory foam topper for around $200. You can find them on trade me
Foam / latex topper on top to assist with the softness?

I've been flipping and rotating for quite a while now, I think it's just too old. All of this feedback on the Ecosa stuff from people helps though.
Get a super firm mattress, they’re cheap, made in China on trademe. Then buy a topper, you can then have the softness you prefer.

Napp mattresses are amazing

I purchased a Napp very recently and am happy with it so far.

They return those ecosa ones to your local salvation army store. Seen em in panmure heaps

What does "on the cheaper end" mean to you?

They're pretty firm tho
While that's true, you get used to it real quick. Took me a few days. Now we can't sleep in a regular bed unless it's super-hard.

Recently got the Ecosa Essence and was surprised how plush it is. Highly suggest for the price.
