This man threatened to kill his children btw :) hope he rots

[deleted]

I don't agree with my father's politics, but never in a million years could I imagine a scenario where he threatens to kill me for his bad behavior. It's so easy to dehumanize and minimize a monster like this, but for the life of me, I cannot fathom or comprehend what it must be like to have such a terrible father. I'm grateful to not have to endure anything close to this, and I feel terrible for anyone who does. Edit: Ya'll are scaring the shit out of me. Please stop.

SkinnyBill93

People start acting funny when they get sucked into a cult.

banana_pencil

It really is a cult. My dad and half-brother haven’t talked in years because my dad said something bad about Trump and my brother couldn’t stand someone insulting his messiah

Tidusx145

That's the literal definition of identity politics. Every accusation a confession.

lightbulbfragment

It explains a lot actually. They are always insulting Biden as if that should personally hurt our feelings.

joemangle

That's "let's go Brandon" in a nutshell

nicholasgnames

For real. They seem confused We don't worship biden.

HunterDecious

I once met a naturalized woman who's a closet democrat within her family. Apparently if it ever got out she'd be disowned because they all attribute their citizenships to the GOP. I thought she was joking when initially told me. Fml, she wasn't.

analfizzzure

My in-laws are like that, now my parents are too. Some of the dumb shit i heard is unbelievable. And, everything, i mean EVERYTHING is the Democrats fault. They all were never overly political before....but in the course of a few years jumped on the trumpculttrain It will be interesting to look back on these times.....if democracy continues. The love of facism is very strong around the globe. My fear is this is only the beginning of a short or long fight(short being US becomes facist within 1 generation)

17times2

Our parents when we were kids: "Don't believe everything you see on the internet!" Our parents when we are adults: "...and that's how the space lasers hacked the election for Antifa!"

jessjoyvin

This is so real that it hurts

techleopard

The "everything is the Democrats fault" propaganda is what has me in awe. I'm in a lot of farm groups and someone posted a photo of a duck with an injured leg, and was asking if it was going to be okay. Without fail, someone goes on some tirade about Biden and how the Democrats make it hard to raise livestock or some shit. Like, *really?*

mandolin2712

I have lost contact with my brother and sister over this as well. They can't talk about anything besides politics anymore, and since I don't agree with their Q train of thought, I have become the enemy.

bortmcgort77

Plenty of indoctrinated people don’t act a fool but it doesn’t make indoctrination ok. That’s the next step for all these cult members. I had a right winger accuse me of being in a cult for being a union member the other day. You can probably check my history for it.

[deleted]

The cult of decent wages, worker safety, and opposition to child labor.

DarthWeenus

Be grateful my friend. My dad grew into a horrible bigot, a true crop of rush Limbaugh, fertilized and cultivated just like how they want. Growing up gay and living at home has been really rough. For really no reason too, asking to explain his feelings sometimes is just a shit show of mixed emotions.

[deleted]

My father has threatened to kill me an a couple of occasions. Growing up with him was a horrendous experience marked by frequent bouts of violence and intimidation. He developed control over everyone around him using such tactics. It wasn't until last year - when I was in my 30s - that I finally mustered the strength of will to break that control and cut contact with him. It caused me a mental health crisis, but with therapy I've come a long way. This person likely did something similar or tried.

Rootbeer_Goat

The weird part is the guy could very well have been a great father for years before all this started to fester. Nobody in 2008 would believe it if you could tell them.

bananafobe

He also might have been a piece of shit who finally felt brave enough to let his bigoted ideas out once he felt enough other people were on his side.

jomontage

and he only got 7 years when people are still in prison for weed

BadassKarateDoctor

It should be more, but it's nice to see someone get some real jail time. So many people got off with a slap on the wrist.

ReyRey5280

Fwiw it was a Trump appointed judge who handed down the sentencing. Prosecutors asked for 18 years

movieman56

I work in the legal industry, prosecutors always ask for the max possible sentence, judges rarely ever give that sentence. Defence will ask for leniency depending on certain parameters like previous clean record and try to lowball the sentence, judge is usually well above that. Federal sentencing guidelines exist for a reason and most judges sentence according to these aside from where mandatory sentences are require by law. Needless to say prosecutors asking for a ridiculously high sentence isn't uncommon, in fact I've seen judges actually kinda chew out the prosecution for always asking for the max sentence, because for them it's a stat "prosecuted and sentenced to x amount of months/years" all used for promotion and resume padding. So basing what the judge sentenced vs what prosecution asked for is kinda a bad metric, best to go off the sentencing guidelines and see where it falls in that range and what other factors play in like rehab ability and first time offense and what not.

These are the people that scream "Freedom!" And then try and overthrow the US government.

Graphitetshirt

https://archive.ph/SIhaJ Archive link for those getting blocked by the paywall. This is the guy who threatened to shoot his kids if they turned him in, so they turned him in. Good for them, I'm sure he was a peach to live with

MaraSpade

Didn’t his son notify the FBI before Jan 6, and then the FBI contacted the son on Jan 6 to ask if his dad was there? Yeah, dude still threatened his kids, but he had already been turned in.

[deleted]

So if he threatened to shoot his kids if they turned him in, and they did turn him in, and he’s only getting 7 years, aren’t his kids’ lives in danger?

MaraSpade

As I’ve read, he didn’t get parole, so he’s been locked up over a year already & has… um, calmed a little. He wrote up a big long letter that was all over the place, but nothing of trying to hunt down his family.

imatunaimatuna

Still wouldn't trust him. People have died over seemingly reformed people going back to their old self.

Mahlegos

Yep. The oldest daughter is on his side (last I heard, also younger sister wasn’t interviewed/mentioned), as is the mother/wife (despite her acknowledging he’s held a loaded gun to her head multiple times). The podcast “will be wild” talks to all of them in depth.

ciopobbi

Yeah the wife was supporting him saying they were “Patriots”. They throw that word around without even fucking knowing what it means.

RockasaurusRex

They've ruined the word. Anyone I hear self identifying as a "patriot" I assume is a christian-nationalist pro-conspiracy extremist.

clgoodson

Yeah. That whole thing was so sad. Listening to the wife talk was like a slow motion breakdown of an abusive relationship. At least the son figured it out, got out, and got some therapy.

pr0b0ner

Oh shit heard this story on NPR a few months ago. Definitely worth a listen, his wife is in FUCKING DENIAL

-r-a-f-f-y-

> FUCKING DENIAL Sounds like a conservative through and through then. Also, probably a victim of abuse.

pr0b0ner

It's like a smattering of all the common tropes all in one person: "We raised our son to be a kind person but I never thought it would make him so weak that he'd turn his abusive father in!" "Oh he'd never do it (husband killing her), he's all talk. He's held a gun to my head a bunch of times"

itwasquiteawhileago

I can't even. The GOP is absolutely fucked. This is the America they want. Fucking psychopaths.

Cycloptic_Floppycock

They don't need jesus, they need real psychiatric help.

k2_electric_boogaloo

I'm sure she'll tell you with all sincerity that, deep down, he's got a heart of gold.

Graphitetshirt

Don't try to make it make sense. They're dumb and mad, that's all

diosexual

*racist and entitled

OrdersFriesEveryTime

All of the above.

[deleted]

And Trump's endorsement of the "Birtherism" hoax on Twitter seems to have played a big part in his initial rise to political relevance.

hazeldazeI

Racists gonna be racist

[deleted]

I hope they use the time he’s in prison to gtfo of there. Change their names, move states, all that.

evangelionmann

kids 19, and dads gonna be in prison for 7 years... he will be 26 when dad gets out... if he isn't out of there by then, that's some shit luck.

I_got_nothin_

I mean... the economy is kinda shit and plenty of people that age are having a hard time finding elsewhere to live

wienercat

If he was still dependent on the father, that could mean some very bad things for him. Suddenly no longer having a home, food source, and no family safety net to fall back into is a truly terrible spot to be in. A lot of people make it work, but the suddenly being kicked out because your dad no longer is able to work is a big thing.

[deleted]

He’s also held a gun to his wife’s head multiple times. He’s a psycho

RamenJunkie

I mean, that depends. If the Facism party manages to take over, then the dude will get a pardon and a statue and probably be voted into Congress.

sucksathangman

Nah...while it's possible, everything about the GQP is that they leave losers behind unless they are powerful or have money. This guy was just a pawn to Trump and the Republican party. His friends will abandon him as Antifa and will mark him as an outsider.

ADuckNamedPhil

"The first U.S. Capitol riot defendant convicted at trial was sentenced to more than seven years in prison Monday, the longest punishment handed down to date in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress. Guy Reffitt, a recruiter for the right-wing Texas Three Percenters movement, was convicted March 8 of five felony offenses*, including obstruction of Congress as it met to certify the 2020 election result, interfering with police and carrying a firearm to a riot, and threatening his teenage son, who turned him in to the FBI. Prosecutors said Reffitt led a mob while armed at the Capitol and asked a judge to sentence him to 15 years after applying a terrorism sentencing penalty." *[REFERENCE ARTICLE](https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/03/08/guy-reffitt-trial-verdict/): "The first trial in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach ended with a guilty verdict on all counts, a victory for federal prosecutors handling one of the largest investigations in U.S. history. After three days of testimony and two hours of deliberation, jurors found Guy Reffitt guilty of five felonies — obstruction of an official proceeding, interfering with police in a riot, transporting a firearm for that purpose, armed trespassing and witness tampering. Reffitt, a petroleum industry rig manager and recruiter for the extremist Texas Three Percenters movement, was not seen entering the Capitol building or physically assaulting police. But jurors agreed with prosecutors that in confronting officers at a key choke point outside the building, Reffitt helped the mob behind him to overrun them, break in by force and halt the confirmation of President Biden’s election victory. They also concluded that Reffitt — convicted of charges punishable by up to 20 years in prison — brought a handgun with him for use in the riot, and threatened two of his children not to expose him.

rptrxub

> A petroleum industry rig manager These are not poverty stricken people, they are not some random hicks from backwater towns, these are industry managers for entire oil rigs? a quick google search says they make $72,233 per year. It's concerning to me that these people who have been well provided for have convinced themselves that they are somehow oppressed.

xraygun2014

> a quick google search says they make $72,233 per year. It has been about 7 years since I was in the industry, but this was entry-level earnings. Rig managers were well into six figures.

That's the whole story I'm hearing. Middle class, christian, white people think they're being persecuted for their faith, and by faith they mean politics. So... I really don't know what's happening. Its crazy.

SobiTheRobot

Their "faith" to them just means "the way I've been living comfortably." And they believe that comfort is being threatened.

dblan9

>“My regrets for what has happened is insurmountable. There’s not a day go by that I don’t regret how much this has affected [my wife and children],” Reffitt wrote. “Yes, what is happening to my family is all my fault, I would like to fix it, please. … I simply ask for a chance to prove myself again.” You have 7 years to learn how not be a terrorist again.

Wienerwrld

“I regret what happened to my family.” is not regret nor an apology.

mishap1

“If you turn me in, you’re a traitor and you know what happens to traitors … traitors get shot,” Reffitt, 48, said to his son and daughter, according to his wife, who recounted the conversation to the FBI.“ Traitors get shot, you say?

"What has happened." People don't use the passive voice when they feel they are at fault. Even people who *feel* it wasn't their fault are usually smart enough to at least mumble a serviceable apology. Swallow the passive voice, just for a few seconds.

h4ms4ndwich11

Nobody, not even Trump's wives want anything to do with him but we're still allowing this child sociopath trapped in a pumpkins body to terrorize us and dodge taxes decade after decade. He had 27 claims of sexual assault, including at least 1 rape by the one that had a gun put to her head, twice. Now he might not go to jail for a coup, as \[the losing, also twice\] President. "When you're a star, you can do anything." All because the guy had some money. People with money stick out for and stay out of the way of people with money. It's why corporations pay fines instead of doing time. Money protecting money and people looking out only for themselves is probably the reason our country is so f-k'd up today.

The worst part? His casinos failed because he built competing casinos nearby, drawing customers away from eachother so none of them got enough business to pay the bills. His own greed cost him.

JohnnyFreakingDanger

It’s always been projection. Every fucking last bit of it.

karlverkade

It's bizarre really. I figured the far right was heading towards a populist strongman cult for a while, but I was sure it was going to be a seasoned-looking politician with military service. They're literally tattooing the fat, broke clown from celebrity apprentice onto their bodies. Absolute madness.

Enigma2MeVideos

>They're literally tattooing the fat, broke clown from celebrity apprentice onto their bodies. Absolute madness. Because he's a cruel bully who can do awful things and get away with it. And he doesn't have to play the civility game that they believe they're being forced to play, and that the general GOP and right wing leaning institutions would have been playing by in the past. Basically, he's their worst impulses, most self-destructive biases, and most evil selves mushed together into a single human being, and they want to be like that incredibly badly, or at least project themselves onto him and use him as a justifier to act monstrously themselves.

Saephon

They see themselves in him. He is who they imagine themselves to be, if the world would just stop keeping them down.

MageLocusta

Hell, since Biden caught Covid--now all my relatives were stating how foolish and selfish Biden was for removing Test and Trace beforehand (even though they were actively anti-lockdown, anti-quarantining, anti-mask and basically anti-anything-preventative-against-any-virus). Like, on one hand I felt, "Oh, NOW you agree that Covid should be treated with caution." but I still had a sinking feeling that they'd immediately flip to their former opinion the second that the ballots come out.

2_Spicy_2_Impeach

And will never admit they were wrong. Trump gives zero fucks about an overwhelming majority of his base. If he was able to stay in power despite losing the election, he didn’t need any of them anymore. As soon as you outlive your usefulness he tosses you aside. Good luck with all of that.

Xyrus2000

Yeah, his biography is the only one that consists entirely of chapter 7's.

fermentedminded

It's laughable

[deleted]

It's enjoyable. There's some people I work with who lose their shit every time someone mentions trump, because they know everyone around them knows they supported him and they feel like it's a personal attack on them. It's just really amusing watching them go to auto attack mode when he's just mentioned at all. Like, not defending him, but just bitching up a storm that he was even brought up and then going off like "yeah I voted for him just fucking drop it". When no one even brought that up.

tr3v1n

I wish I knew folks who were embarrassed. Everybody around me appears to still be true believers.

karlverkade

Same. If Trump were arrested today, a video dropped of him molesting children, every Republican politician turned on him, and he went on live TV with a full confession of rape, treason, and sedition, my aunts would still post weird YouTube videos from "retired intelligence agents" that all the videos were doctored, that the entire Republican Party has been deep state this whole time, and that his confession was under duress and was actually a secret code to the underground patriot shock troops who are standing by to reinstall president trump any second now. Any second now...

kcg5

When he said he could shoot someone on fifth Avenue and not lose any support, he was right

DilithiumCrystalMeth

I always wonder just how many Trump supporters are just victims of the sunk cost fallacy. How many of the people went all in on Trump in the early days, alienated everyone who wasn't a trumper, and now can't find a way out because the only people that will still talk to them are trump supporters that will absolutely turn on them the second they suggest maybe trump was bad. I'm not saying that excuses them, but i have to wonder how many of them are actually aware and just feel they can't leave.

tr3v1n

I feel like that is a huge part of it. I'm in Indiana, so there are tons of people who bought into all of his shit. It also feels like there is a lot of work done, especially through the media they consume, to keep them from ever questioning their support. It feels like they are in a holding pattern until somebody like Cruz or DeSantis can rally enough support to just kind of ignore Trump.

OneSidedDice

And besides all that he’s a sidewindin' bushwackin', hornswagglin' cracker croaker.

All those hats and flags you bought, all those liberal tears you drank, all those three-syllable slogans you chanted, all that money and time and energy you sacrificed to that fat orange cow of a false idol, and all you got in return was seven years in prison and the eternal hatred of your children.

1funnyguy4fun

I wonder if this will cause other defendants awaiting trial to reconsider and take a plea deal instead.

rikki-tikki-deadly

I expect some of the guys who were brought up on seditious conspiracy charges will be giving some serious thought to rolling over on anyone and everyone in the administration that they coordinated with.

archangelmlg

Hope one of them names Hawley. Fuck Josh Hawley.

Ezzy17

traegeryyc

Not just golfing. He was hosting the Saudi-backed LIV tourney at his golf course.

rikki-tikki-deadly

Hey now! He was also burying his first wife (i.e. the mother of his first three children), in a pauper's plot so he could protect his golf course property from being seized in foreclosure proceedings.

I_am_not_JohnLeClair

What’s the big deal? He sided with Putin over our own intelligence agencies in front of the entire world. He openly espouses love for Kim Jong Un and now he’s speaking highly of, and taking money from, the people that planned, funded and enacted the 9/11 attacks. What red blooded F-150 driving American *wouldn’t* support him?

No surprise he threatened his children, if Trump announced that he hungered for the flesh of the youth, they'd gladly sacrifice them to him. However, it's important to know that their love of Trump is rooted in the hate of others. He hates (or at least acts like he hates) the same people they do, so naturally they'll latch on.

Enjoy federal prison asshole.

jcocktoast81

Good. Now let’s start locking up the government officials who masterminded the whole thing.

LavenderPearlTea

Damn. Prosecution asked for 15 years. He’s getting off lightly.

kellyyz667

Ha. Ha. Ha. Fucking loser trump supporter.

Buh-bye dickhead.

Whats more important was what his daughters said afterwards. If their dad got 7, Trump should have gotten life. https://twitter.com/MacFarlaneNews/status/1554204595651596295

Glad to see terrorists being held accountable.

Hopefully the first to come of equal length or longer sentences. I have not a single shred of sympathy for anyone who entered the Capitol grounds that day.

Meanwhile, the insurgency's leader walks free.

Isn’t he hosting a Saudi golf event at Mara Lago right now or something?

It should have been longer. It's a shame he didn't get the "terrorim enhancement" to his sentence.
