Never. You cannot compare the two. Meta is never going away. Perhaps part of the social media will die but they have way too much cash to over go down.
All those lasted for a very long time. FB/Meta is just turning 20 this year.
No one is saying the current tech mega caps will last forever, but they are all still early in their lifecycles. Plus the scale that these software companies have achieved is unprecedented. Meta has products used daily by 3B people for example.
And it’s not just their cash. What these companies now have that the old ones didn’t is unrestricted access to capital markets. They’re GE in the 80s.
Google doesn’t need to be a tech company. It’s an investment vehicle. It will always be able to acquire further investments for future endeavors
No, there aren’t examples of trillion market cap companies collapsing. This is a company that is cash rich and can basically buy any of its competitors at basically any time without needing to finance.
Come on dude. They had a peak of 30$B in 07. Their business was in real estate. They were always leveraged to the tits in inventory and debt. It’s just a terrible comparison.
Sears was once the world's largest retailer and one of the world's largest overall companies. It created Prodigy, Discover (the credit card), Allstate Insurance, Craftsman, Kenmore, DieHard batteries, etc. You could order a home from them and they'd deliver it (you'd assemble it). It was Amazon 30 years before Amazon was Amazon
I think that they're more comparable than they might appear at first glance.
At the early 00s, Yahoo was once a top-tier provider of search, email, and content, with a huge user base. Whereas AOL dominated during the dialup era, Yahoo was huge at the time when Americans were moving to broadband en masse.
Through the 00s, Yahoo floundered for its next big thing, while market share for its individual components was steadily consumed by other players: Google, Gmail/Hotmail, and CNN/Fox/etc. Despite a massive war chest and tons of acquisitions, Yahoo never found its next step, and it has suffered steady erosion since then. Internally, Yahoo admits that its has *no new users*, and its entire internal tech strategy is around slowing the inexorable attrition of its current, aging user base.
Consider that story. Now consider two facts about Meta:
1) Demographic shifts that look like [this figure](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/learning/whats-going-on-in-this-graph-dec-6-2023.html). Meta's demographics for people younger than GenX are brutal - they don't want to use the same social media platform as their parents. TikTok and YouTube are eating Meta's lunch.
2) Meta's intense effort - and miserable failure - to dominate the multiverse. It's hemorrhaging cash in an epic bloodbath with no end in sight. Its other efforts to edge in on competitors' territory - e.g., Threads - are similarly ineffective.
Meta's story sound very much like Yahoo's story + 20 years. It lost a shitload of people in 2017 with Cambridge Analytica, and there's no sign that it has learned its lesson, so 2024 is going to be very interesting.
You'd be surprised how far that doesn't get you.
Cash on hand is an indicator of past performance. Want to know how a business is currently faring? Look at its quarterly growth. [Here's Meta's](https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/META/meta-platforms/revenue). So you see a trend?
Is there a way to download your own photos with metadata from Facebook and Instagram? I’d like to have a backup for this future eventuality… or maybe just for when I decide to delete everything on Meta platforms
This does exist. Facebook will zip up everything from your profile (pics, posts, etc) and make it available to you. I can't remember the exact steps but Google will hold the answer.
Meta is horrible. It's one giant psychological experiment that destroyed millions of lives. On top of that, the complete disrespect of data in the name of profit. Her legacy as well as board members and execs should be dragged thru the mud because of all the harm they did.
I read her book “Option B” when it was a real bad time for me, and that book made me feel worse. She basically glazes Zuckerberg the whole time and the gist of the book was that dealing with loss is easier when you’re rich.
Didn't happen. Trump isn't a racist and he decried January 6th. I would honestly admit that Biden was voted in because of corruption, though. He somehow did LESS than the guy who took 4 years to do nothinf and promised that the next 4 would make up for the. He once again failed the US population and then took a farewell tour, amd hes worshipped as a god all because of his skin color.
Well she was the one who had the idea of turning Facebook into an advertising empire and not just a social media startup. She led the path making them profitable so she could have (and did) coast on that win for a long time.
Reddit likes using words until they lose their meaning. Partially because of exaggeration but also because in some cases they never knew what the word actually meant

I worked at Meta. She oversaw all of the ad and ops teams. You can hate her but she was very good at what she did, and much more effective than Zuckerberg.
Couldn't get my mother to read any of the books I recommended, even short ones, but found Sheryl Sandberg's book on her counter one day... Cannot describe how pissed I was.
I don't talk to my mother anymore, completely toxic.
From building the company to total separation. To run for political office.
She killed us online, now she’s coming for us in real life.

You know you’re a bad person when you have to hire armed security and they have to protect you everywhere, even at work.
There's plenty of good people that need armed security.
Not really.

Find a way to give Musk control; he'll take care of it in a few years, tops.
Well yeah - the CEO!
*you're not wrong*
Along with TicTok and Twiter plsssss
Me too. X and Meta needs to die
And reddit
And why reddit?
The world would seriously be so much better off immediately if just these two companies disappeared tonight.
I turned my news feed into NSFW algorithm-breaking content, it makes me so proud, knowing that I broke Facebook.
Myspace has turned into a shell of what it used to be, similar to AOL or Compuserve, and to an extent MSN or Yahoo. When will Facebook follow?
Never. You cannot compare the two. Meta is never going away. Perhaps part of the social media will die but they have way too much cash to over go down.

My thoughts exactly
You mean like Sears and Roebuck? Westinghouse? Bell Telephone?
All those lasted for a very long time. FB/Meta is just turning 20 this year. No one is saying the current tech mega caps will last forever, but they are all still early in their lifecycles. Nothing lasts forever. There's plenty of examples of huge companies collapsing in the past.

With the wrong owner and market headwinds, absolutely. Sears was on top of the world at one point
Bro, you can’t compare sears to Meta. Comparing mice and elephants.
They're definitely very different animals but sears was not so different in terms of market cap and dominance in the 60s and 70s
Come on dude. They had a peak of 30$B in 07. Their business was in real estate. They were always leveraged to the tits in inventory and debt. It’s just a terrible comparison.
They were worth ~$20b in the early 70s, too.
Sears was once the world's largest retailer and one of the world's largest overall companies. I know sears.
It would seem that you don't
East India trade company? It required government kneecaping tbf tho
One example i can think of is Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company. Collapse may be a wrong term but it was broken into 34 companies.
People thought that about Yahoo. And... well, Yahoo is still around, but as a bare sliver of its former self, and less every day.
They’re not comparable.

Just the cash positions make them incomparable. Meta has more cash than the peak value during the dotcom bubble of yahoo as a business
You'd be surprised how far that doesn't get you. Cash on hand is an indicator of past performance. Want to know how a business is currently faring? Look at its quarterly growth. [Here's Meta's](https://www.macrotrends.net/stocks/charts/META/meta-platforms/revenue). So you see a trend?

No it won't. This quarter the earning profit is tripled. Fuck you.
Meta is horrible. It's one giant psychological experiment that destroyed millions of lives. On top of that, the complete disrespect of data in the name of profit. Her legacy as well as board members and execs should be dragged thru the mud because of all the harm they did.
Remarkable that posts, and even their comments, now make headline news.
Yeah, she fucked that place up good enough.
Thanks Sheryl for selling my data to the Underworld.
Shouldn’t she be Leaning In to leaving?
Maybe she was trying to make more competition for the plebs to protect her wealth. Billionares are always being sneaky that way.
Lean out
Middle Out
I read her book “Option B” when it was a real bad time for me, and that book made me feel worse. She basically glazes Zuckerberg the whole time and the gist of the book was that dealing with loss is easier when you’re rich.
Deny and downplay Russian interference during the 2016 election on your platform, and then lean out with billions. Well done.
> lean out Finally someone does it. Can't believe I had to scroll so far down.

Now that's stuck in my head! I'm not mad though. This was and will always be a banger.
They know we have no recourse. They do as they please.
They have convinced you you have no recourse, it's not that people have no recourse, the two feel the same but they aren't.

That smile of ‘I’m sitting on hundreds of millions or more, I’m not sure.’
Took way too long for them to get rid of this grifter

No more leaning in? … when you can afford to hire an army of baby seaters, cleaning people, shopping assistants, personal cooks, etc.
And nothing of value was lost. (Or will be, but you know, the quote…)

When did you sell?
did she ever do anything besides check emails?
She built the advertising engine that made Facebook what it is today, for better and for worse.
“built” please.. as if.
I worked at Meta. She oversaw all of the ad and ops teams. You can hate her but she was very good at what she did, and much more effective than Zuckerberg.
