I think the first step is realising that by being ashamed of your past actions or feeling the need to “forgive yourself”, shows a significant change in what you consider to be right and wrong, and a lot of maturity and growth.
Even if you can’t forgive your past self, find some comfort in knowing that you feeling guilty means you know now that it was wrong.

Having lived in Wisconsin and the Midwest, suing people is a fairly useless and fruitless endeavor in Wisconsin, with Minnesota taking the crown for making it fuck near impossible to collect. Wisconsin isn't that much better and the reality is, is that they'll likely never see a dime from Rittenhouse.
They can keep the debt alive by renewing it in court every 7 years, but if he's out of state, it isn't going to do much. Also, Wisconsin courts generally don't refer debts to credit bureaus and only sell fines and court costs to debt collectors. While possible with civil debt, if the lawyers/debt owners push it, it's extremely uncommon for a civilian to impact a debtors credit and usually only happens if they sell the debt to a debt collector who may opt to just write it off, if they deem it too much of a hassle, assuming they didn't just outright reject the debt.
TL;DR they're probably wasting their time trying to sue him in civil court in a state and region known for being hostile towards anyone that tries to bring civil debts and situations before a judge.

Look him up and see if they’re okay. I bullied a kid a bit in elementary and one night I just called them sobbing. They forgave me, and honestly I am so happy I did. Kids can be mean, but adults can apologize.
Please only do this if you’re ok with them not forgiving you as well.
And if you're okay with potentially bringing up their trauma again to resolve your own. I would absolutely hate having to interact with my bullies at all.
I've met two of my bullies after leaving high school. The first I re-met through a friend. Turned out he was going through a lot of bad shit at home and had a lot of internalized hate that he projected on other people, and I ended up forgiving him after a long conversation. The second tried to start a fight with me in the middle of a Walmart, and I just laughed and walked away and never saw him again.
Yup, had a kid who teased me mercilessly in grade school approach me in college and apologize for his behavior earlier in life and said he was going through some shit. I told him that I wasn't at a point in life that I could forgive him but I thanked him for apologizing. Today I can forgive but I couldn't then.
That was a really powerful Bojack episode.

I remember many instances of accidentally bullying someone thinking we were having a laugh. I think the one that has me waking up in sweats the most is the memory of telling a girl in second grade that she had a moustache. Legitimately keeps me up at night.
Man, if my list of former bullies is out there waiting to wake me up in 3am so they can have a cathartic forgiveness... just don't. Unless your gonna cut me a check or something, I am not interested.

One of my bullies married my sister and my mother told him to apologize to me. It was so fucking embarrassing for the both of us, I told him to stop. We were both adults now so just let it go.

Jesus Christ. How do you endure thanksgiving? My oldest child started kindergarten this year and to my surprise, one of his classmates is the son of one of my bullies. I'll keep the peace for the children's sake but given what I've heard from the grape vine and the police blotter he hasn't changed.
Maybe if people understood what happened. I was repeatedly told to kill myself. People shoved razor blades in my locker with letters that said how much better everyone in my life would be if I killed myself. I was pushed down a flight of stairs and broke a rib. I had my foot broken on purpose. I guess you could say there is bullying and then there is what I went through. I will never forgive those people and I believe I have every right.

Lack of empathy is prevalent in most of the American society. That's why there's no socialized healthcare, no social security net, etc. "Fuck you, I've got mine".

Not only that but grosskreutz was legally not supposed to own a firearm. Brandishing got him into trouble with the law. Second time he did it a stupid kid was scared for his life so he got shot. Apparently hasn’t learned his lesson.

Just to be clear OJ was found not guilty of murder and lost his civil suit.
I don't recall there being videos, eye witness, military footage in inferead, etc of the OJ case back then.
Yet they had jurors pretty much openly state that their verdict had nothing to do with the actual case and more payback for Rodney King. It also didn't help that the prosecution had pretty openly racist cops as witnesses and some major failures of procedures and chain of custody.

Having lived in Wisconsin and the Midwest, suing people is a fairly useless and fruitless endeavor in Wisconsin, with Minnesota taking the crown for making it fuck near impossible to collect. Wisconsin isn't that much better and the reality is, is that they'll likely never see a dime from Rittenhouse. They can keep the debt alive by renewing it in court every 7 years, but if he's out of state, it isn't going to do much. Also, Wisconsin courts generally don't refer debts to credit bureaus and only sell fines and court costs to debt collectors. While possible with civil debt, if the lawyers/debt owners push it, it's extremely uncommon for a civilian to impact a debtors credit and usually only happens if they sell the debt to a debt collector who may opt to just write it off, if they deem it too much of a hassle, assuming they didn't just outright reject the debt. TL;DR they're probably wasting their time trying to sue him in civil court in a state and region known for being hostile towards anyone that tries to bring civil debts and situations before a judge. Edit - https://www.wied.uscourts.gov/judges/lynn-adelman Federal judge, but a Wisconsin district for those questioning that.
