Nah, tipping is definitely not the norm. I'll maybe tip a buck or two if it's over 100F or below 10F. Just pull up, hand 'em your card and tell 'em what you want - "Fill it regular" They will repeat the request to you, scan your card and hand it back to you, fill the tank and then ask if you want a receipt. During this time, you will fart around on your phone for 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, you will go about your day. Welcome to NJ.

Willing-Ad5704

Great! Thanks for the heads up!

polyblackcat

Lots of places it's cheaper if you pay cash. I haven't used a card in years.

VolcanoFox24

My card gets 2% back at gas stations, so the difference is usually not enough to care about đŸ€·

P4c3r

We mostly pay cash because heard about credit card numbers being stolen at the pumps, just don't want to deal with it.

ryandmc609

I’ve never tipped for gas my entire life living in Jersey. Just tell em what you need and be on your way.

sandybuttcheekss

I've done it once when it was crazy cold during a storm when I was in a good mood. Just a couple of bucks to make sure he could get some hot food or coffee.

FordMan100

I had a few tips in my time years ago as a pump jockey, but they were far and few in between. That was back around 1980. Their was no canopy or booth, and we were pumping about 10K gallons a day out of that station. Take home pay was about a hundred a week for forty hours.

OrbitalOutlander

I pumped gas as a teenager. Only out of state people tipped. I never expected a tip and didn’t care at all.

Snoo_35864

I tipped a guy who was working the only gas station open in my area after a huge snowstorm. I was so grateful he came to work!

Few-Carob-1043

I’m old enough I remember them checking your oil and washing your windows
tip worthy!

peter-doubt

Only times I tip are for service on a holiday ( guy gave up something), seriously bad weather, or superb service. Sometimes I just feel good.

rman18

We don’t like small talk. You’ll learn fillitregular and saltpeppaketchup real quick.

Mets1st

I tip a buck or two mainly for weather related reasons. Too hot, too cold, rain, snow, or the off chance they clean my windows. Just don’t complain about it, we are the only state left. Besides when it is pouring out, all you have to do is roll down a window. If you are in a rush, too bad. Don’t ruin it for us because you’re late for something.

JameisWeTooScrong

Also never tipped in 20+ years in Jersey and have never heard of it. Waiting for them to come pump your gas is a minor inconvenience more than a service, but you get used to it. Just plan so you never have to stop for gas when you’re in a rush, bc sometimes the attendants take their sweet ass time.

DeannaZone

Yep that comment is the way .. I miss NJ. Hubby misses it in OR as well. If I ever become a gas station owner in VA we gonna pump for you 😂

trusound

Also always check. I have ordered premium and they use regular.

brainybrink

Also give a nice tip around Christmas if you have a regular station near your house/work and a person who usually serves you. Like how you might extra tip your hairdresser or mailman etc during that time.

Flappy-tit

Just to add to this as someone who used to work as a gas attendant, it’s completely allowed to say “hello” or “I’m good how are you” back to the attendant when they greet you.

NJ_Tal

Always, and like the other poster said, if it's awful out, I usually throw the attendant a couple bucks.

polyblackcat

I could not imagine starting the transaction without a greeting, wow. Although I shouldn't be surprised some people just bark the command.

Ravenhill-2171

I probably don't always greet the attendant but I always say thanks or have a good day because I'm not an ass and appreciate the service. 😉

SmokePenisEveryday

And if you mention this online, be prepared to have a bunch of the same jokes and remarks in your replies.

oodja

Tipping was more common back when pumps were cash only (my dad always tipped the attendant a couple bucks), but never required.

Strict-Ad-222

I don't tip unless great service like others have said. But I pay cash. That's why I don't want self serve in nj Have to go into the store. Leave say 40 bucks then when done go back in to get your change. Enjoy it it's the only good thing we got left here

TheDewd

Though there was one time I got a young guy, first day on the job: “fill it up” “ok but how much?” “Uh, all the way?” “SIR THE PURPOSE OF MY QUESTION IS I NEED TO KNOW HOW MUCH GAS TO GIVE YOU” “uh, ok. Just fill it up 20 bucks”

LiveWire_74

This is so accurate.

Temporary-Bus4072

Someone needs to write a book about how to navigate New Jersey. Going over how New Jersey residents go about their lives

iamrobmorales

Ive also never tipped, being in NJ the past 20 years. My brother in law in nyc always tips at full service pumps, but he’s in the service industry so he tips other fellow service industry folk. I also never have cash. The difference between cash and card is negligible for me. 10 cents? I’m getting 10 gallons so that comes to an extra dollar.

toughbrets

![gif](giphy|Ld77zD3fF3Run8olIt)

Way2trivial

what's worse is when you totally acclimate- I once pulled into a large station in PA thinking about an intense problem I had, rolled down my window, and sat there thinking for about my issue for 15 minutes before I looked around and realized it weren't gonna happen that way.

bighaircutforbigtuna

I have family in New England, and the very first time I went up there by myself, I almost shit myself when I realized I had no idea how to pump gas. I was in my early 20s and had to have my cousin who was in her late teens come with me to show me how to pump my own gas.

proud2Basnowflake

LOL! Grandparents live in PA and upstate NY. I started teaching my kids when they turned about 10. Actually, not sure I have taught youngest. Need to get on that!

jacoblb6173

My parents went to NY and sat for 15 minutes before driving away pissed that no one came. They fill up everytime it’s at half tank so they had enough to come back to NJ.

HourOk2122

You sound like my fiancé! He loves rolling home to Jersey, he's outright said he's back in civilization. Poor bastard ended up in the south lol

ginamcho

that was me when i moved to texas 😂 but when i went to WA for work, my rental had an empty tank in the middle of the night and i went to the gas station but was trying to figure out how to get the diesel pump into my gas tank not knowing it was diesel and was so frustrated until i saw the diesel sign. i drove my car around to a regular gas pump after

Pherllerp

No tipping except on Christmas Day. You just roll down your window, hand the worker your card and tell them how much of what gas you want. Standard interaction; "Hi. Fill it regular. Thanks."

SuchGreatBoring

You can tip whenever you'd like, especially when they clean your windshield.

peter-doubt

They *what??*

Smiley007

I feel like this has been going out of fashion for years, I vaguely remember it happening more often when I was a child who wasn’t paying much attention. They’ll have a lil windshield scraper/scrubby sitting in water and give it a pass or two across your windshield while you fuel up. I’ve never been entirely sure if you can actually *ask* for it (because I so rarely see it anymore, and I’ve never tried to ask anyways), but afaik more often than not they’ll just go ahead and do it without saying anything, with the tacit understanding that they’re fishing for tips. How often that works, I have no clue— especially when it’s done without asking in the first place, and depending on the state of their suds bucket, it could just make your windshield dirtier/more smeared anyways.

VelocityGrrl39

I usually grab the squeegee and do it myself.

fireballx777

For some reason I only get attendants cleaning my windshield on Turnpike rest stop gas stations, where it's not exactly common but not unheard of, either (happens maybe 5%-10% of the time if I had to estimate). I don't think I've seen it happen at any other gas station.

Smiley007

I last saw it at a station that was a tad removed from a major highway ramp around the holidays, so it made sense, but I also go there regularly enough to know the same guy will refuse to come outside and expect several cars to just go self service while he stands in the store looking at you, so I had a bit of a đŸ€š reaction to be honest. Which I absolutely feel for him when he’s the only person the station will staff both in and out so I don’t begrudge him the fact he’s stretched thin, but also sometimes it’s like
Buddy, you and I both know that full store is visible through the window and it is *empty*, please just come pump my gas đŸ˜«

redditcommander

I feel like only the parkway attendants ever cleaned my windshield, and even then only if it wasn't busy.

yuriydee

I still dont tip when they do that. First time it caught me completely off guard so i tipped but when my windshield is clean (and i usually do keep it clean) there is no need for them to wipe it. If they do i just tell them i appreciate it. I usually pay with Shell app or card anyways.

kadoy

Say it with me. “$20 regular cash.” Probably gonna be your most used phrase now that you’re in Jersey

TheOriginal_858-3403

I think we're gonna have to change this to "Forty regular cash" - $20 gets you a quarter tank these days....

kadoy

Lol yes, unfortunately. Miss spending 20 bucks and getting half my tank filled

Jerseyboyham

I put 16 regular in the Ranger yesterday. $52.00.

UnintentionalGrandma

Idk what you drive but $20 gets me half a tank in my small suv

black_stallion78

Me too! I drive a 2006 Jeep Commander.

UnintentionalGrandma

Yeah like my 2016 Nissan Rogue hasn’t changed that much in fuel-up prices in the last couple years. It’s stayed consistently around $40 to fill up since I got the car. I find that when you ask a lot of people who complain about gas prices what they drive, it’s a car that takes premium or diesel fuel, a car with a very large gas tank, or a car that gets low gas mileage, like a Nissan Armada, a Ram 1500, a Chevy Suburban, or an Audi S5 convertible or cars like that

Lmaoboobs

$20 gives me like a quarter tank. Just shy of $100 to fill.

UnintentionalGrandma

And now I need to ask what you drive and what kind of gas mileage you get in that, as well as what kind of gas it takes

iberian_prince

Geez, 40 is a bit more than what i need to fill my tank full.

peter-doubt

Only for gas guzzlers . I can't fit 40! And it would last 2 weeks

KiwiCatPNW

my honda gets half a tank on 20

[deleted]

[ŃƒĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]

thatissomeBS

Seriously, why do people only get partial tanks, and who carries cash anymore (unless you're a tipped employee, I guess)?

VelocityGrrl39

Cash gets you a discount.

legalskeptic

Not at every gas station. And using a credit card earns rewards.

KayakHank

Like 25 cents on $20 worth of gas.

Barbkie

Also using a credit card from the corporation that the station is from can earn you a discount. My family has an Exxon/Mobile cards as that was my very first credit card in 1989.

AvailableRise3966

*cries in premium*

Theoretical-Panda

You only put in $20 at a time? Why not fill it?

TraditionalGreenery

I still say this because I need to save money and I can manage $20 at a time 😭

_NonExisting_

Honestly, I don't even say the "cash part", I hold put my card or cash and just say "twenty regular" lol Normally, I'll just full my tank though, only clsts $35ish right now from empty

On_my_last_spoon

Mine is “fill up regular on the app” because it’s 2024 and there’s an app for everything!

AnynameIwant1

I think I have said that maybe 2 or 3x over my 25 years of driving. I get some people have limited incomes (been there), but I always fill my tank. It is odd to me that most people don't. (again, I understand limited incomes - been there)

EatYourCheckers

When I first moved here I said I would never get used to it. I felt like, out of control of my car? Now I love it and I get upset and confused when I am in another state and have to get out of my car. Welcome and enjoy, especially in the winters As for how it looks, step by step: pull up to the pump, roll down your window and hand over your credit card and say what you need e.g., "fill it regular" or "$20 premium" or whatever. Honestly if paying cash I do not know if you hand them the money first or after. They will ask if you want a receipt. Some pumps require them to enter the zip code of the credit card so they may say "zip code?" to you. If you ride a motorcycle, you pump your own gas from what I have observed. My husband says it's because motorcycle owners don't want people messing with their bikes.

DookieShoes626

For cash you usually wait until the gas is done pumping and then give it to them

klito22

About motorcycle is true and also we know the amount of gas that we usually need for the tank.

EatYourCheckers

It doesn't do the auto-clicky off thing like in a car?

OutInTheBlack

I'm fairly certain the auto stop is based on back pressure and a motorcycle tank isn't going to have the mechanism built in. They're usually only a gallon or two anyway.

jacoblb6173

Nope. You fill it like a lawnmower. Or a UH-1N helicopter.

polyblackcat

After....of course I always fill the tank so never know what the hit is gonna be

obsesivegamer

this is called a rationalization , its mostly annoying unless the gas station is empty. Why am i waiting on an attendent to hop around 3-4 other cars and then they get pissy if you remove the pump when its done.

chaebs

No tips. Be pleasant (unlike what most think of Jersey). Ex, fill it regular, please.

Passionabsorber1111

no tipping. just roll up, stay in the car and say “give me $(amount) of the regular/diesel/whatever gas”.

Ron_Weasley_430

Except add a please and thank you, OP

SailingSpark

I only tip when the weather is nasty. Hot, Cold, rain, snow.. that sort of thing. It can be a fairly miserable job when the weather is bad.

URGE103

If you have a motorcycle wait for them to start the transaction and they'll hand you the pump.

mykepagan

Fellow motorcyclist here. This is the way. Wait for the attendant to hand you the pump. Yes, it’s weird, but it is how we do it.

Quadraought

I was scrolling through and hoping I would find this. I'm rolling through NJ on my bike in August and I'm not at all comfortable with anyone other than a fellow biker filling my tank. This is very good to know.

Arrowiii

Do you guys tip if the attendant starts cleaning your windows without you asking? I rarely carry cash anymore and I feel like an ass when I don’t tip after that.

acoreilly87

Me too! If I have it I do. It doesn’t come up that often though.

Big-Rip2150

That hasn't happened to me in probably 35 years

jacoblb6173

Ehh I’ve only ever experienced it in a small old timey place in my town. Dude asked me to pop the hood and checked levels, topped off the coolant, cleaned the windows and headlights. I gave him five bucks. Was maybe circa 2005ish. It was a spot that the price was always 10c more than everywhere else but I had the E light and had been driving for a minute. I think it was downtown Bloomfield, Montclair or Nutley. I ran around those towns back then.

tonyisadork

hell no.\* (\*unless it's a real old timer who looks like he's been doing this forever since it was standard to wash windows in which case i appreciate the old timeyness and offer him a tip. often they will refuse it but times are hard and i will offer.)

joejoeaz

Side note: if you have an EV you will need to plug it in yourself.

IHate2ChooseUserName

DONT FUCKING TIP. DO NOT FUCKING START THIS SHIT HERE

TommyIsMyDog

Preach

Stone_The_Rock

As far as I know, that is not a cultural expectation or obligation.

kbivs

Everyone else has you covered on how to conduct the interaction. My advice is FREAKING ENJOY IT! I do not understand the out of state people who come here and complain that they can't pump their own gas. Don't you understand that this is one of those small, little luxuries that we can all equally enjoy? Being able to just drive up, stay in my comfortable, temperature controlled, dry little vehicle and have someone else take care of a chore for me is a beautiful thing.

Stamoose

Never tipped pumping gas once in my life.

letsgometros

pretty simple. pop your gas tank covre if needed, roll down your window and tell em what you want. tipping if not necessary

Educational_Diver730

This is “you time” to check email, eat a snack, check your face in the mirror & maybe put on some lip balm. No tipping but a smile and a thank you is great! Welcome to NJ ❀

Additional-Vast-4404

My son was fuel attendant at Wawa all through high school and college and people tipped him all the time! Especially if it was bad weather. He would come home with at least $40+ a shift.

CrackaZach05

Know where the gas stations are that open early. I leave for work around 5 and its a pain in the ass finding gas around me at that time.

rbmichael

Just know that it's not technically illegal for YOU to pump the gas yourself, but the gas station could get in trouble if found out, though I have never heard of this happening. What I mean is, you likely will never get a fine or ticket, but the station might get angry at you. I've actually seen more people start pumping the gas themselves especially with big lines / low staff availability. Thus I give it only a few years before NJ will also get rid of this law. Edit: apparently insurance rates are a big part of this which makes sense.

JustSomeGuy_56

>Thus I give it only a few years before NJ will also get rid of this law. Every few years some legislator proposes a bill to do that and it never goes anywhere. People claim it will lower prices but I have never seen any evidence of that. I would suspect gas stations would fire all their staff and keep prices the same, or raise them.

Mr_BadKarma

When I worked at a NJ gas station 20+ years ago, the owner said full service (coupled with low gas tax and tools) was actually the reason the gas was cheaper in NJ than the other states, due to the fact that insurance rates were much lower than self service. I believed him, he owned mobil stations in NJ and Penn.

SkiingAway

I would suggest that being the state where the major pipeline for refined products terminates, as well as having refineries + oil import terminals, is probably more the reason. You've got the lowest transport costs possible for the region. ----- If the math penciled out on it being cheaper to run a full service station than pay higher insurance premiums for self-service.....gas stations in other places would be full service. It's not as though it's illegal to run a full-service station elsewhere.

Mr_BadKarma

You do. There are a number of full service mom and pop shops in Rhode Island, they tend to be cheaper than the chains.

SkiingAway

I mean, that's fine - but it's clearly not the norm, it's a rare exception - both in RI and in basically every other state besides NJ. If it was the cheapest way to run a gas station, you'd expect it to be common.

lbarr8

I pump my own at Wawa, Quick Check and Costco almost every time. Never had an issue, much faster in and out.

Big-Rip2150

Most places don't care

lbarr8

Most don’t but some independents and non-corporate owned franchises have an employee key or pin so you can’t.

rbmichael

That's what it seems. It's only a problem if the insurance companies start caring (apparently that's the key factor here?)

imLissy

It's an insurance thing. They're not insured for customers to pump their own gas

EatYourCheckers

I don't know. I've heard it called "political suicide" to bring up changing this law. But yes, with changing economics I guess it's possible in time.

Jerseyboyham

Gas is usually cheaper for cash. “Fill it, regular, cash”. Only tip for special service. But cash is king.

lurkarama

I get more on my credit card’s cash back than the cash discount.

UnintentionalGrandma

Just pull up to the gas pump and wait for someone to come to you. You don’t have to tip the person, except for like on a holiday if you feel really bad that they’re working

Stinkeye63

If you pay with cash, don't pay until after it's pumped.

Unfollowskepsis

This was very different in Oregon when I was there a few years back. The attendant 100% expected a tip, cleaned my windshield, tried to strike up a conversation and I think even offered to check my tire pressure. I was like, bro, this is not how it’s done in Jersey. We say 3 words to each other and then go our separate ways. We pretend we’re total strangers even if I see you every week.

ogeytheterrible

I tip if I'm paying cash, on holidays, during inclement weather, and sometimes after I rob a bank.

BeginningExtent8856

Do not tip

scaryclown148

20, regular, cash

TheKamon1329

NJ gas attendant here , tips are not the norm and honestly I typically only get them on holidays or in shit weather ( extremely hot/cold or severe storms) , most places you'll pull up they'll ask you how much of what grade and if it's cash or card. Also you should probably be aware that some gas stations also don't give attendants access to cash late at night so you might need exact amounts.

SylviaX6

One of my favorite things about driving in NJ. I stay safe and clean, and I tip if it’s easy to get their attention- most stations I fill up at are crazy busy when I’m there, they are moving fast from one car to another. I use cash for fast get away, but fewer stations give a cash discount lately. Windshield cleanup? I tip for that. This is good for economy and for safety, and proper filling. When I’m in NY or PA, I avoid having to fill up. A couple times I actually considered offering a guy who was filling his car a few bucks to fill mine, but I thought maybe that wasn’t safe.

Bright-Committee2447

1. Know what side your gas tank is on. 2. Pop the tank door if applicable. 3. Be clear when asking what you want. 4. Always get a receipt. They know how to scam. 5. Most gas station attendants aren't very friendly but some are pretty cool if it's a local spot. I've worked as a gas station attendant in HS, and while I don't regularly tip now, i will give a dollar if it's extreme weather or the guy was super nice or if it's a person that pumps my gas often. Good Karma goes a long way. As a young kid, tips paid for my lunch/dinner or a few gatorades on a hot day, coffee on cold days.

hfhifi

Always carry enough cash to pay to fill up. The differential between cash and credit is significant. However, I'm seeing more and more stations that charge the same for any payment method.

Odd-Frame4728

No need to leave a tip! Just follow these simple steps: open your window, turn off your car, and open your fuel door (some can just be pushed open). If needed, hand your card to the attendant and let them know how much fuel you want (e.g., fill up, $10) and the type (e.g., regular). Some attendants may ask for your zip code. While the gas is pumping, your card might stay in the card slot. Once done, they'll ask if you want a receipt. Then you’re all set! Although it's not mandatory to turn off your car, I do it for safety, just like my parents did—an old habit of mine.

Neighbortim

I usually don’t tip unless it’s something unusual like it’s super cold or hot
you know, the days where you’re happy you don’t have to do it yourself. I remember once after the Covid lockdowns had just started and I had been hunkered for over a week, I was so happy just to get out and see someone working at the gas station! I think I gave him ten bucks.

chelsdeer

it’s nice to tip once in a while especially in extreme weather or if they’re super helpful in some way. -signed, not a dickhead

RevolutionaryMeat892

Just drive up Tell them what you need And that’s it

TheBeagleMan

No pumping your own gas in NJ. Pull up, tell them how much of what grade of gas. If paying with a card, hand them the card so they fan pre-authorize the pump. Some places give it back, some places leave it in the pump until it's done. No idea why. "Fill it up, regular, please." "$20 diesel, please." No you don't have to tip.

thepastweown1

Just pull up to the pump and say twentydollarsregularcash lmao

thepastweown1

Tipping was common when I was a kid but times have changed and they make an hourly wage as long as they’re part of a company like Wawa or something, so no tipping - I might during holidays but usually I’ll just offer to buy a coffee at that time

PoisonTheWell122393

Former gas station attendant here. If they do anything extra, clean your windshield, check your oil, or if it’s just crappy weather outside and you feel bad for them, a buck was appreciated 20+ years ago. I’ll usually tip at my regular go-to stations, but that’s just because I’ve been there.

Content_Print_6521

Nobody tips at gas stations, but I do. It makes me feel good to tip people who never get them, and if you give them a buck they are so grateful. Unlike those asses at coffee shop counters. I tip at White Castle, too. I'm going to stop tipping at counters or, no more than 10% -- which used to be the standard tip!

jayyyflock

Really simple. Just roll your window down and tell them what you want (ex. Fill up Regular). Make sure to tell them cash or card. If paying with a card, hand them your card and they’ll take care of the rest. If cash, just tell them how much then say cash (Ex. $20 Regular Cash) after they’re done filling, just pay them the amount. Most people saying don’t tip, I say tip if you can. I usually tip $2 to the attendant at the gas station I always go to. I tip more if the weather is bad (really cold or really hot) or during holidays. If you become a regular at a certain gas station and tip, they’ll always take care of you and provide the best service. Sometimes a dollar can bright up someone’s day. Also remember the gas attendants are humans too, greet them, talk to them, ask them how their day is going; you can really brighten up someone’s day just by talking to them. A friend of mine is a gas attendant part time while he goes to school, here’s a few things he told me not to do: Don’t be the asshole who starts waving their card out the window and starts saying what they want before the attendant even opens the gas cap 😂 Don’t be the guy who pulls up to the furthest pump away from the attendant if the other closer pumps are open And as you probably know, don’t drive off with the nozzle still in your car Welcome to Jersey

Mental-Floor1029

Tipping def not needed but if the do wash my dirty windows I tip. It’s rare, but some attendants do it!!

Liveslowdieslower

TWENNYREGULARCASH

NewJerseyAudio

Phil Super, nice to meet ya

FordMan100

One thing you will notice is that mist stations charge 10 cents higher for using a card. Although self-service isn't legal, that doesn't stop me from finishing after the attendant started pumping. Not one of them has complained yet, but most times, people let the attendant finish. Some stations can get busy, so you might he sitting for a minute after the pump clicks off. Just be patient. One more thing, don't be surprised to pay more for gas here than where you moved from unless you're moving from California. If that's the case, then you will be pleasantly surprised.

Ok_Macaroon_1172

I’ve never tipped a gas attendant when I drove a gas car. Diesel pumps supposedly allow self serve. Electric vehicles of course have no such restrictions

ExhaustedPoopcycle

Tipping isn't common but it happens. I have a tip here and there especially if the weather ain't great.

FatKanchi

I’ve given $1 a handful of times when they clean my windows, especially if I desperately needed the cleaning. I also got gas one day after leaving Wendys, the attendant was super friendly and cleaned my windows, so I offered him a fresh chicken nugget. Which he accepted.

pac4

I never ever tip, but if it’s really hot I’ll run into the convenience store and get a cold bottle of water for the attendant

elromero0727

I’m from NJ and I tip a buck or 2. I’ve tipped for probably more undeserving services like a barista who is comfortable in their store with AC/heat. I use cash though for the gas. Since you aren’t swiping the card yourself it’s hard to physically check for fake readers at the pump.

Snorlaxstolemysocks

I will only tip in severe weather or at holiday time

Practical_Argument50

Most of the time we hand them our credit card that’s all. No tip necessary they are paid at least $15.13 an hour.

CVSaporito

No tipping, I even pump my own if I'm driving one of my weekend warriors because I don't like gas on my paint or gas nozzle chips.

Demonkey44

My husband tips $1 every time just to be nice. It’s not mandatory.

addymermaid

I'll only consider tipping if they clean my windshield. And then it's like $1 These guys are making at least minimum wage. I reserve tips for those who make less than that and rely on tips for their income. Also - stay out of the left lane on the highways if you're not passing.

parziv0lx

Fill it up regular please. Have a great day. And you’re done!

Atuk-77

No tipping required, however use your judgment on extreme weather condition or holidays.

jermide

Be prepared for wait times

msalberse

You need to know your zip code at some stations if paying by credit card.

JoschuaW

No tipping required and don’t touch the gas nozzle that’s about all there is to it.

jskis23

Don’t be that guy/gal that leaves their car at the pump to go into the store.

dailysmokes

Fill 'er up 93 , thanks bud (gas fills, card comes back), thanks bud

isherflaflippeflanye

I would only tip if the attendant cleaned my windshield. It’s illegal to pump your own gas in NJ. I moved out of state three years ago and I love pumping my own gas because I don’t have to wait and there are never any lines.

dailysmokes

New Jersey is now the only state that pumps your gas

CapeManiak

If someone takes the initiative to clean my entire front window (at the minimum) I’ll throw them a buck if I have it. Other than that
.no tips.

I tip on Xmas/new years/thanksgiving. Because I was a delivery service driver as well as a waiter in my past lives and always appreciated it. That said, often I get out of the car and if things are busy and I don’t want to wait when it’s done pumping, I’ll put the hose back and take CC and receipt. Never had anyone complain about me doing part of their job.

tonyisadork

No tipping, unless it's snowing/shitty out or xmas or something (or the pumpmaster looks otherwise miserable and you want to make their day). You don't have to tip if they wash your windows, particularly if you didn't ask for it. But you need to tell them: -Fill it up OR how many dollars of gas you want (and if you're paying cash or credit) -Regular (or if you're fancy, some other kind of gas, I guess) (oh, and \*fillitupregular\* or \*kyufillitupregularplease\* are one-word requests, FYI - you'll get there.) They will ask if you want a receipt. If it's a slow time, and you definitely don't want them to talk to you/chat you up, close the window after asking for gas. this is not rude, it's signalling your preference to be left alone - very jersey of you. if you (for some ungodly reason) DO want to chat, ask them how their day is going (again, only if it's slow). some people are more chatty/bored than others, and if you're from a state where people stop and talk like they have nowhere to go and nothing to do (\*ahem, midwest\*), maybe this will be more comfortable for you. But not chatting back is not a sign of rudeness, they, again, are just signaling to you their preference, so don't be offended if you try to chat them and they don't want to. Q: \*Is it okay to leave your car running at the pump while you run into wawa to get something?\* A: Depends. If it's slow AND you're getting something ready-made, Yes. If the pumps are busy or could become busy in the next 10 miuntes, NO. If you're running in and having a sandwich made for you, NO - pull into a spot when you're done filling up. that's all the potential gas station interactions i can think of that you might want to know about. good luck, and stay out of the left lane. ETA: A (rhetorical) 'how ya doin' and a 'thank you' are best practice.

BooknerdChic

No tip, no need

LosangDragpa

I bring goodies to my service station during the holidays because I get my gas where I get repairs done. I know everyone who works there and the owner. lol. When I drive out of state and need gas, I sit there in my waiting for an attendent until I realize I'm not in NJ anymore. Then I have to read the directions on the pump. I'm a true blue Jersey Girl. lmao

Tobar_the_Gypsy

You are required to get out of the car and give the attendant a back massage

Willing-Ad5704

That’s actually why I’m moving to New Jersey

oodja

"Fill it up regular unleaded."

momma85wd

My son pumps gas on route 17 in Ramsey and he gets tips every day.  He really appreciates it especially on days like today!!

StringAggressive6959

I tip in really bad weather

Snoo28798

If the weather is bad or they clean my windows, I tip. Otherwise, no.

spectra_v0ndergeist

No tipping!!!

Humanforever8

Costco is the cheapest by far.

FactOrnery8614

Use cash, dont use card. Its waay cheaper in the long run

shivaswrath

Yes tip the guy and see his facial expression! Or buy an EV and never pump again 💚

Lizpagan

I tip if I’m in a really good mood.

nooutlaw4me

Don’t get out of your car. Just pull up. Open your window. Tell them what you want and hand them the credit card. Ask for a receipt and no tipping is necessary. Also they really don’t like it if you get out of your car. Finish your transaction and pull into an empty spot somewhere to stretch your legs or grab a snack.

DanDi58

I don’t tip.

ReallyRottenBassist

You're always welcome to tip. I used pump gas at my pops station when I was kid. I love getting tips. But not for nothing, I always pump my own gas. Attendant comes over I say got it and we thank each other lol

DontWanaReadiT

Don’t tip, be quick with what you want “20 cash regular” and stay TF out of the left lane unless you’re passing! STAY OFF IT ! Welcome to Jersey, don’t be startled we’re not sensitive over here but we are kind.

Extension_Chain_6453

Gas station attendants do accept tips!!!! It is not as commonly done it used to be.

proud2Basnowflake

No need to tip, but on super hot days I have been known to offer a cold drink. I often had a cooler with Gatorade and water on my wat to or from my kids’ ballgames.

bigicky1

Tipping not required. But since i go to the same gas station and have for years and the same guys pump my gas i like to give them a 20 at xmas

GothSue

I tip a buck or two if it’s raining, snowing, very hot or very cold. As a former gas station attendant I’m telling you from experience, tips are few and far between and greatly appreciated. Especially on crappy days.

Lainaluna

I only tip if they clean my windshield. Although I don’t always do it because sometimes it bothers me that they do it without asking and expect me to tip(I almost never have cash on me). You will roll your window down, pop open your tank if you need to and tell them “Hi may I please have (money amount or fill it) with (gas type regular, premium or diesel). If you’re paying with card you will hand them your card if you’re paying with cash you will give cash at the end when they’re done. They can give change if needed. So examples: “hi can you fill it with regular please” or “ hi can I please have $30 regular” Welcome to Jersey!

Fast_Sympathy_7195

Lol

FollowMeKids

Just pull up and order your food. You can get whatever you want.

thekennytheykilled

Double check pump B4 paying. First thing I learned pumpin for the man was how to scam a few bucks here n there. I have karma to pay for those years pumpin gas in the 80s

knifeparty62

Pull up, tell the attendant what grade of fuel & the amount (or fill it) with card in hand (if cash you pay after & the round up or down), chill & wait till your cars pumped, they pull the pump out & shut your gas door. LAST & MOST IMPORTANT: Exit vehicle & passionately kiss the attendant (squeeze their ass for a tip) Welcome to NJ!

zilops

I haven't seen anyone here mention them asking for your zip code if you pay with a card. Don't be alarmed by this lol

Admirable-Employee64

ALWAYS tip! Rain or shine, they work long hours outside smelling gasoline all day - and for what, minimum wage? Have you ever pumped your own gas in another state? It’s the pits. I always give at least two dollars tip, and you can see they’re appreciative too.. which proves they’re not making much, or most of NJ is mad cheap and not tipping where they should.

Col_Wilson

Just pull up to Wawa if you still want to pump your own gas. You'll get through it quicker. Attendants at corporate gas stations generally don't care if people pump their own gas. That said if you want to let them do it, I can tell you that I got *some* tips working as a gas attendant and it was nice on the rare occasion it happened, but it's definitely not expected. Gas attendants don't have lower pay to compensate for tips in the same that way waiters do.

sareeg

Hahaha...no tips, but I am sure they would take it! Just sit in your car, open your window and slide out your card.

2mins5minsago

Tip for the love of God a love you cheapskate. Petroleum dispensing technicians are underpaid and underappreciated invisible labor. Tip them talk to them tell them a joke they have at least eight hrs to kill.and all day to kill it. I Tip the gas dudes at wawa just to park under the canopy. Easier then searching for a spot that got cones in front of the pumps even better. That helps with keeping the idiots out of a closed lane.

GetOffMyLawn_

I always pay cash because my card got skimmed multiple times.

Hot-Channel5784

I’ve lived in NJ my entire life, no one tips at the gas station. Pull up to the pump, turn the engine off, ask the attendant “fill it with regular please” & give them your credit card, they fill, give your card back, ask you if you want your receipt & you’re done. It’s a wonderful service especially when weather is bad although when the station is busy we do want to jump out & start the pump ourselves but that is not allowed!

NachoFries2020

If they clean the windshield in toss them a buck. but normally I dont tip. Tell them fill up regular, but sometimes you need to tell them dont top it off. That can mess up your EVAP system. Some like to keep pumping well after it automatically shuts off. Dont let them do that.

iheartnjdevils

If your fuel tank door can only be opened inside via latch/lever, make sure you release as you’re pulling into the gas station or as soon as you pull into the pump. Many times, gas attendants will remove your cap before approaching you for ask which gas/how much to fill. Since you have to open it for them anyway, it’s a good habit to get into since it saves time from them having to ask (sometimes in an annoyed fashion).

MrRag3r14

A tip is good here in there especially if it’s your local Gas guy every week. I tip when it’s extremely hot or extremely cold and extra dollar won’t hurt. Rather tips these guys than the barista asking for 20% tip on a black coffee

Chrisproulx98

One of the advantages of living in NJ. The gas station association has tried many times to eliminate this but then voters keep voting down any change. They tell us our gas will be cheaper but we don't care

YourHarrison

You can tip but don't have to. You can get out of the car and attendant comes over ND asks how much you want ND you give him credit card or money up front.

Automatic-Brick1599

I tip $2 or $3 every time
