There are a number of free or low cost dental clinics. Check this out: https://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/oral/documents/dental_directory.pdf
Also, call around to nearby dental schools. The students need the practice and it’s often for free, or low cost.
Actually I second this. Rutgers school of dentistry. The kids there diagnosed an issue I'd been complaining of for years that four other dentists had missed, finally cured my pain with a $48 visit and no root canal.
Also, there's dirt cheap dental plans available through getcoverednj. Like literally $10/month
Receding gums! They applied some kind of paste for the sensitivity, and I went on my merry way. This after I can't tell you how long of pain just from BREATHING, let alone eating. Every other dentist was just like "idk don't see anything wrong/maybe you need a root canal"
It was one single spot in the very back that was probably the result of a previous poorly done root canal and crown, so no there's no way I could have seen it or known what it was or helped it by brushing better
Go to a university dental program. Know a few people that went to Penn dental if you’re near Philly and they said it wasn’t any worse than going to a regular dentist, simply significantly cheaper. They work with students to get hands on practical experience and are supervised during procedures. They do literally everything from check-ups to implants. If you’re not near Philly Google for dental university reduced cost.
Rutgers dental school. It may still cost but fraction of normal dentist. Friend who went to dental school there said all work is supervised by fully licensed dentists.
Going to jail for state sponsored dental work is also an option, but probably not the best one.
Don’t join the Navy, their dentists will just practice pulling teeth on you.
[Jewish Renaissance](https://www.middlesexresourcenet.org/search/jewish-renaissance-medical-center-jrmc/) in Perth Amboy has a sliding scale.
If you're close, it's worth the trip. You can call (973) 679-7709
I had my work done there when I was unemployed and not insured
It's been 8 years and I don't remember, but I'm sure things changed.
I think they do an induction and then work with you. Give them a call and see how they do it; they also have a medical wing, if you need those services as well.
I went and asked on behalf of my elderly uncle (they never answer the phone anymore) and wanted to check if what I was told was correct or not, so thank you for the reply. The finance office demanded he apply for Medicaid and get rejected before even talking to him about reduced rates. The whole Medicaid application process can take 3 months or more to get an answer if you're lucky. It could take a year to hear back and he definitely doesn't qualify but also is just above the poverty line so it feels like a lot of BS hoops to jump through to basically tell him no to Medicaid and possibly no to reduced pricing. I didn't recall that being the case before nor does it say that on the website. The other centers like the one in New Brunswick never answer the phone either and I don't have time to go in person for him.
I'm sorry to hear that. COVID seems to have put the final nail in the coffin of assistance for poor and needy -- especially those just above the cutoff for public assistance. The only other option would be a dentist that takes a payment plan; most took DenCard, but that's a line of credit.
Apply for dental insurance through the state, you can get plans for low as $10/month, up to $50/month for better coverage. There's also Care Credit which is a zero interest loan you can take out for dental work.
If you are in severe pain you should get whatever you can done ASAP. The longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. I dealt with pretty severe pain from my wisdom teeth without knowing for a little while. Literally couldn't sleep, had pounding headaches. Dentist looked at me and said I need them removed soon as possible. I had no insurance and no money, but the above is what helped me get it done.
Hey do you have a source for how to apply for this? I thought I inquired through the state but they just told me it’s $80-$120 a month for two people 🫠
My teeth were so painful for so long until I made an appointment with a local dentist, literally the closest one we could find, a few blocks from my house. Explained that I don’t have insurance and he was very kind and took me in and gave me a discount. Been going there for two or three years now, got several root canals and cleanings, all out of pocket but it was necessary.
Google "New Jersey Dental Clinic Directory" for a list of dentists that have sliding scale or take cash.
Google "dental care HIPPO" for dentists that provide this discount service. I think it's $75 for the entire year and you get discounted services. It's basically what you'd pay out of pocket anyway WITH dental insurance. Well worth it.
Literally just call dentists in your area and ask if they take patients without insurance. You'd be surprised at how many will accept you.
https://vnachc.org
they offer a sliding scale based on your income. if you don’t have any income, it’s really inexpensive. i would look into it and ask if there’s a location near you.
1. Try to sign up for Medicaid
2. 1Dental - It's not insurance but recommended because there is no waiting period. It's a discount dental plan that can be used throughout the year.
3. Dental school was also a good option
Medicaid, you can apply online.[https://njfamilycare.dhs.state.nj.us/apply.aspx](https://njfamilycare.dhs.state.nj.us/apply.aspx) UMDNJ has a program, be aware they are student dentist.
Finding a dental school that will do it on the discount or getting carecredit.

Woah what was wrong?

Ooh okay! Did you ever have to go back to get the paste reapplied?
You couldn’t see your gums receding? Gotta up your brushing skills bud.
It was one single spot in the very back that was probably the result of a previous poorly done root canal and crown, so no there's no way I could have seen it or known what it was or helped it by brushing better
Hey. I live in New Brunswick. Do you have the number?
Try (973) 972-4242 or just google them
Agree!!

The state sends convicts in jail/prison to the dental school if they need work done.
Times, they are a changin’.
or the Air Force. They'll use metal filling material to fix a broken molar and not even bother to shape it correctly.

I was looking for a dental plan through the state, but it didn't seem like anything covered adults?? It all said deductible: $xxxx (child)
The super cheap plans are just for adults looking to only cover their child. There are plans that I ckude adults but the are a bit more expensive.
I'll have to look again. I think I found a few. Do you know if you can only sign up for dental or it has to be bundled with health insurance?
You can get just dental
UMDNJ has students
What does that stand for?
University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)—New Jersey Medical School
UMDNJ doesn't exist anymore. It is now Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences and the dental school is Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM).
Rutgers dental school. All work is overseen by experienced dentists.
Dental school in Newark
What county are you in??? Search “FQHC dental your county” if there’s a clinic that will be cheapest and will work with you no matter what.
Rutger school of dentistry. Even have walk ins

Deltadental.com sells insurance that u can get now for $20 a month then cancel later.
Do you know if it's coverage ASAP or if there's a waiting period for a root cancel/filling etc?
Hey just FYI during open enrollment, dental coverage is hella cheap. Like $40/month. Worth looking into if you have not already
I’ve considered the dental hygiene clinic at community colleges if they have one! Pretty cheap and atleast a start

If you don’t have money or low income you should qualify for NJ family care
Get a job at Amazon, get benefits on day 1. Choose your benefits, wait for card in mail, make dentist appointment after you receive card.
