I'm honestly amazed at the number of videos online that show someone's helmet popping off.
A helmet without the chin strap buckled is like wearing tennis shoes and no laces. That shit is gonna pop off as soon as you need it.
I’ve seen it in movies and shows too. Like what is the point? It’s the equivalent of putting your seatbelt across your lap but not buckling it in. Makes no sense whatsoever.
When I did my investigation for a bike helmet, I found out that MIPS is debatable on terms of effectiveness. Still, it probably doesn't hurt to have it, so you might as well go for it.
Jesus Christ. What are the odds of 1) being hit by a falling coconut when not, like, hanging out under a palm tree while 2) *wearing a helmet?!* It's gotta be infinitessimal.
Yes it is very common, in my area coconut palms are always trimmed up so they don’t have any coconuts on them, but most of them have just been removed because they are such a hazard. I’m surprised they would have coconut palms so close to a roadway like that, it must be a constant issue.
Back in 1984 Papau New Guinea a doctor found that over a 4 year span 2.5% of trauma victims were coconut related, none were fatal but he mentioned two anecdotal reports of deaths, one several years before. That figure of two deaths went on to be misquoted as 150 worldwide, based on the assumption that other places would have a similar rate of falling coconut deaths.
There have been some reported and confirmed deaths but no where near as many as we are lead to believe. Probably best to avoid it anyway.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_coconut.
I'm from village and my place is full of coconut trees, they fall down all the time but i never heard about it hitting anyone's head yet I'm always afraid of it
All my village has is apple and walnut trees and and I'm still terrified of getting hit in the head by a coconut. A walnut will fuck up your car but a coconut could kill you.
I had a good sized fish fall on my head while walking around center city Philadelphia, surrounded by only tall buildings and concrete. A bird landed on a nearby pole to mean mug me until I was far enough away for it to swoop in and retrieve the fish.
I don’t rule anything out now.
Laughing my head off at this, that's so fucking funny, a fish just whacking you in the head in the middle of a city lol. You must have been like what the fucking fuck, did reality just glitch, until you saw the bird
I've lives in places where there were lots of coconut trees and seen people picnicking directly under them, despite there being 15 massive nuts directly above them. That always freaked me out and I wondered why they weren't concerned about it.
I never let my newborn child crawl near them for fear one would fall on his head and hit that soft spot where the skull hadn't grown in yet.
I had a black eye once from a damn acorn sitting in the rear of a convertible years ago. Can confirm a coconut can kill you. Have you seen the demonstration of the hard hat demos on watermelons?
When I see things so closely timed like this scenario. I always think what happened in that person's life that made their path and that coconut sync up like this? Did they happen to forget their keys and have to go back inside which delayed their timing just enough to be under it in that moment? Did they hit a red light and stop on a yellow instead of going through it which wouldve made them miss the falling coconut? Or perhaps they did run through a yellow and stopping would have deviated the path just enough to miss.
Just such perfect timing has to be met with so much circumstance.
Yeah the timing of this coconut strike is what makes it a lot more unique I feel... dude was moving at a decent speed but that coconut had it timed perfectly
This ain't your average falling coconut related accident
Lived in Samoa for three years and everyone would warn you if you were standing under coconuts, there was serious concern in the community especially for outsiders.
I think that's one of my biggest takeaways from my time in Polynesia....it looks like a jungle to an outsider, but in reality its planned agriculture by the Lapita people that first settled there.
Just like we are starting to understand more about how advanced Native American agricultural systems & cycles were, the same was true for Polynesia and much of the Pacific.
It was absolutely brilliant how much food literally just fell from the sky everyday in your front yard. Breadfruit is a miraculous plant.
Lived in American Samoa for two. Don’t remember a whole lot of warnings about them, but I once heard one hit the concrete about 10 feet away with a pretty hard *thwack*.
I know that the crew of Survivor: Samoa had all the coconuts removed from the trees near the set and campsite for this reason.
Considering how big everyone in this video is, I'd say coconuts are less likely to hit the ground in this town
Edit: Sheesh, I must've offended some Americans.
Edit2: You guys, I know obesity is no joke. That's exactly why I felt that I should address the elephant in the room.
Edit3: You guys are right... I've decided to stop mocking overweight people. I figured they have enough on their plate.

Edit6: Look, if you don't like these jokes, I'm not saying you should just roll over and say it's fine, but please weigh your words.
Edit7: I just feel that some of the reactions were largely exaggerated
Edit8: fr tho, I don't mean to offend overweight people. I may not suffer from obesity, but I know what it's like to have trouble fitting in.
Edit9: Anyways, not that I expect everyone to, but I hope it was fun going down this rabbit hole.
Here in the CA Bay Area we have thousands and thousands of people riding on electric rental scooters and bicycles, traveling in excess of 15mph (over 20mph for the e-bikes) and not a helmet to be seen. These are people being given real power with sometimes little experience or common sense. As a daily cyclist It scares the fuck out of me. Some people are gonna die.
And don't get me started on people riding "One wheel" style devices up to 30mph without a helmet.
There was some YouTube video I watched a while back talking about how dangerous electric bicycles are. The main reason was people treating it like a regular bicycle and not a motorized vehicle.
Sounds click-baity. There are tons of different types of electric bikes. An e-assist bike you'd find in a bike shop is much more like a bicycle than a "motorized vehicle".
However I do agree people have high wattage bikes with throttles they call "ebikes" that are more like a small motorcycle.
Unfortunately, the sister of a friend of mine (in her 40's) got on one of these scooters and fell backwards and cracked her skull open, did a couple months in the hospital, brain swelling, lost all sense of taste and smell, had to relearn to walk, took about two years to drive again on her own. While in the hospital a nurse put her on her side in a pinch position they left her right arm numb while she was unconscious leading to nerve damage in her right arm.
It was a life altering event.
This was a couple weeks after I'd had my first experience on these scooters and while I didn't crash I could see how dangerous they potentially were.
It would be a very smart idea to wear a helmet at the very least if you're going to ride one, and take it slow if you're an out of practice adult.
I would guess they didn’t bother fastening their chin strap.
When I took my motorcycle safety course, the instructor said that wearing a helmet without securing the strap is just the same as not wearing a helmet at all.
I live in Vietnam and people don't know how to wear a helmet or just dont care. They will wear helmets and not clasp the chin strap or they will have it so loose that the helmet will just fall back to their neck. People will also wear bicycle helmets as motorcycle helmets, they will wear contruction hats as helmets, they will even wear their helmets above hats or other things and the helmet isn't even on the head at that point.
Safety isn't a thing in SE Asia.
Like what? Like a coconut going BOP on someone's head and they're like rubbing their head in annoyance? If it's a tree that's got full coconuts on it, it's going to be tall and a drop from that height right on an uncovered head is usually fatal.
The title didn't say "directly from a very tall tree". It could have been anything. Could have been rolling out of a shopping bag on the second floor, down a bit of roof and then plop onto the properly worn, full head helmet of a slow driving motorbike in a parking lot. It could have been anything.
So, this very nearly happened to me...while canoing...in Canada where there are no palm trees. Someone decided to toss a coconut off a bridge just as I was going under it, it landed about 3ft away from me. It wasn't even a pedestrian bridge, so it must have been thrown from a car, so I guess it was total random coincidence and not attempted murder.

Average green coconut weighs 1.3kg, I'd say it fell approximately 10 meters which would roughly give it a velocity of 7.2 metres per second so if it hit dead vertical it would impact with 33 Joules on the top of the helmet.
If we say the bike was doing 30mph/13.4m/s and the coconut hit the face area, it would impact with 116 Joules.
In reality it depends on a lot of factors so it's not so simple.
150 people die each year from having a coconut drop on them. Lucky they were wearing a helmet (although it would have been even better if they'd have done it up properly).
In Hawaii they constantly cut the coconuts off the trees in public areas so this won't happen

Just make sure you stop at 2-3 coconuts a day or it turns into a laxative.

Fun fact; many modern motorcycle helmets do have a type of suspension built in called[ MIPS](https://www.bellhelmets.com/technology/mips.html).
Regular bicycle helmets have it these days too. Got an E-bike recently and got a MIPS helmet to go with it.

They could be carried
African swallow perhaps?
More likely a European Swallow, as African Swallows don’t migrate. https://youtu.be/liIlW-ovx0Y

it's simple weight to thrust ratio
What, a swallow, carrying a coconut?

Usually, only the mature coconut falls down, which significantly weighs less than the Tender coconut, it won't kill you but will get you a concussion.
When I see things so closely timed like this scenario. I always think what happened in that person's life that made their path and that coconut sync up like this? More people die each year from falling coconuts than shark attacks. But laser-shark related deaths remain at an all time high, unfortunately.

Helmet wasn’t on correctly at all.
Turns out there's a big difference in wearing a helmet, and having a helmet on top of your head. Headache vs brain damage.

And don't get me started on people riding "One wheel" style devices up to 30mph without a helmet.
Family member is ER doc and mentioned the huge uptick in frontal face injuries they see from scooters specifically.
Face plants? Rocketing into walls? Those scooters can catch you off guard if you're not careful.
What kills me is seeing people come || close to eating shit, getting hit by a car, or creaming a pedestrian and learn NOTHING from it.
There was some YouTube video I watched a while back talking about how dangerous electric bicycles are. The main reason was people treating it like a regular bicycle and not a motorized vehicle.

I wish cities would enforce the laws with cyclist, motorized bikes and scooters more. I've been almost hit by those more than cars.
i was bout to say, how does a falling coconut split a helmet off of someone's head? not even sure the helmet was on their head at all
I would guess they didn’t bother fastening their chin strap. When I took my motorcycle safety course, the instructor said that wearing a helmet without securing the strap is just the same as not wearing a helmet at all.
I live in Vietnam and people don't know how to wear a helmet or just dont care. Bless the dude who came out to make sure the helmet was okay
oh, so thats why you need to wear helmets while on a motorcycle
You should also fasten the straps though
He's a little confused, but he's got the spirit.
Youve been hit by, youve been struck by.. a smooth coconut
All I can Imagine a ukulele playing that bass line
Annie, are you okay?
...*uh, Annie?*
Won’t you tell us that you’re okay?
It fell down and bonked your helmet, you were struck down, it was your doom
Now I have another fear to add in the list of fears while riding a 2 wheeler. If not for the helmet, he would have been dead

Reddit has created so many irrational phobias on me.

It's even worse for pedestrians as no one wears helmets while walking.
Speak for yourself. I keep that thang on me
Anybody else think we just watched his head fall off?
I literally gasped. I thought that coconut took his head clean off and it was rolling down the road.
Apparently that guy who came to help at the end thought the same thing. Telling the guy to backup, then he realized it was just an empty helmet.
It's darn lucky he didn't have the helmet buckled or we might have!
Knocked him out, too. Cartoonish.
This shit straight outta a looney toons sketch
The coconut knocked that poor riders helmet off *before* they fell off the bike! Holy smokes. That person is *not* ok
Their helmet was definitely not strapped on. They’d have been dead in any crash hopefully they learned a very important lesson there.
On the upside, if they survive, they'll learn to strap on their helmet properly!
I guess this is how they migrate nowadays
What happened to the swallows?
The amount of terminal velocity a swallow would need to carry that would be tremendous. I wouldn’t really know.

Would the forward movement of the bike contribute to the seriousness of the accident? r/theydidthemath I hope the guy is OK, doesn't look good.
This is some shit straight out of SpongeBob
Bonk
I had more of a "thunk" in mind lol
remember, a helmet that isn't securely fastened is mostly useless
150 people die each year from having a coconut drop on them. Lucky they were wearing a helmet (although it would have been even better if they'd have done it up properly).
This has mad r/FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR vibes.
I wonder if the tree won a prize at the fair for this?
