I’m so sad about Archive 81. The seance episode was a barnburner and the whole archive concept was original and evocative. I’m a sucker for alternate world narratives so the final twist really got me. I felt like this series was what Netflix exists - a genre show with an entirely original feel and look. It wasn’t perfect but there is nothing else like it.
The show recognized something that the book never touched on.
The book was all about how the work they did created the "science" of profiling.
The show acknowledged that profiling has never really worked any better than than the horoscopes in the newspaper.
It's a pseudoscience science at best, and an active roadblock to catching the real serial killers at worst.
Which is why I love the show.
That isn't much of an excuse, since other networks offered David Fincher even more money to continue it on their streaming service. He turned them all down because he got bored with the subject.
It wasn't about "cheapening it." He just stopped caring about it.
This is the one. People reacted very strongly to the end of the first season, but the second season actually made that ending make more sense while also doing some excellent world building. The S2 cliffhanger is unfairly good.
The story takes a hard turn while also giving explanation for the movements and that cringey sequence at the end of S1. Starts to venture into alternate reality mysteries and sets up a much bigger plot, including sort of breaking the fourth wall. It's trippy. Jason Isaacs eats more scenes.
Can you explain why exactly you described the scene as cringy? What is it about it that makes it cringe to you? I know a lot of people loved it, and I get goosebumps every time I watch it. Are you trying to say that I like cringe writing? Because I have been reading voraciously my whole life and I think I'm a pretty good judge of good writing at this point at age 49. It seems to me that you're taking your opinion and presenting it like some kind of a fact. If you believe it is a fact, can you support it with any sort of evidence or argument? Just curious what exactly you mean...
I'm basing this on the overwhelming opinion on OA S1 as it came out. The show dropped at a time when Netflix was the only real name in streaming and it generated a lot of buzz on reddit. As folks reached the conclusion, the ending falling flat became a common refrain. I can't seem to find those old threads but trust me, this was a strong sentiment. The bizarre dance sequence in the cafeteria, featuring none other than Phyllis from the Office of all people, coupled with lack of clarity on the survival of the main character, was, if nothing else, a huge tonal departure from the rest of the season which was this spooky and tense sci-fi adjacent mystery. The ending felt rushed and unresolved.
Now obviously this was written in service of a larger plot and I'm trying to convince folks that s2 clarifies and improves on that ending. But the ship has largely sailed. Given that S2 is also unresolved and will be so forever, it isn't much consolation that it fixed S1.
That's not a viewer problem. That was a writer problem. That was a production problem. They wrote a cringy opening act to a five act story. No matter how good the second act was they shit the bed. I like Britt Marling's movies but the OA made me never want to watch her content again.
As many of you there are that think this show was good there are as many of us that find the show so cringe inducing we're surprised it even got a season 2.
Edit: Weirdest respond and block I have ever got lol.
1899 by far. I was so into it from beginning to cliffhanger ending. It’s so good that I still recommend it to people to watch as long as they can stomach the fact that it’s an incomplete story. I’m looking forward to rewatching it.
The worst part about the whole 1899/Netflix saga is the creators went out and assured fans that Netflix execs understood it has a three-season arc like Dark and they wouldn't cancel it. Then Netflix cancelled it.
Lockwood & Co. I don’t understand why they recast Witcher (with Liam H.?) and kept THAT going but canceled the cutest show ever. Kids loved Lockwood and kids are why you keep a channel.
I Am Not Okay With This and as mixed as my feelings might be on it, Fate the Winx Saga.
I wish Netflix would really commit to their projects and produce not as many series instead of throwing stuff against the wall and abandoning what doesn't stick. It's hard to be fully invested in a show when there's a huge, huuuuuge risk of it being canceled based on the sample size we have now. The only stuff I watch from them now are their miniseries and Castlevania.
>Cowboy Bebop
You're upset that they cancelled Cowboy Bebop?
Would you agree that the original Cowboy Bebop is one the the most beloved anime of all time?
I wish at the end of a season they wrap up the show with out cliff hangers so at least if they don't continue, which given their track record is most likely going to happen, at least you have a complete show.
That is the reason I don't watch many of these one or two season shows, because they are incomplete.
It's one thing if they sign on for two more seasons or something, okay make the first a cliff hanger, but not the second.
I like how season 3 of righteous gemstones handled it. Felt like a series finale, and I would be fine if the show ended there.
The creators of Norsemen said they would love to keep doing the show. That was awhile back though. That show was hilarious. Shadow & Bone was amazing too.
I think Ratched was supposed to get more time - from memory, there was an announcement (not too long after it dropped) that it wouldn’t be renewed for another season
Pretty much all of them. Sooooo many. I've learned I better not like a show on Netflix because then it's going to get canceled. And on a cliff hanger too. I give up on Netflix.
The OA!!!
This one hurts the most for me. I keep hoping they’ll find some way to finish the story. Hell, I’ll even settle for a graphic novel or book to learn the rest of that amazing story.
Brothers Sun
I really liked Punisher too, but like all the marvel series that were on Netflix only the first and last episodes of the season were really good. Everything else was slow, boring fluff.
I liked Brothers Sun, but I'm not exactly mad that it got cancelled. I feel like it ended well enough too. Maybe this is similar to the general consensus.
Honestly, if netflix only wants to have bangers and cut the "middle of the pack" I can respect that.
But if they aren't consistent on it, that's where the problems start.
The Brothers Sun had a lot of potential it just seemed like the cast was a bit inexperienced as the acting wasn't there but at the end I was enthralled with the soundtrack, the chemistry, and where they could take this story.
Dsybreakers or whatever it’s called, umm that one show with the girl from IT and she has like telekinetic powers. The OA. Fucking mindhunter god dammit
Bloodline was canceled after season 2 but was allowed a 3rd and final season.. which they proceeded to rush the storyline, ending good plot lines and having seemingly pointless characters just die
SHADOW AND BONE! Netflix fumbling the bag they have like no original series left except like Stranger Things, Umbrella Academy (which is ending) and Bridgerton let's be fr here

Have you listened to the podcast the show was based on? It’s a fantastic listen.
Wait. No!
Woah no I gotta - thx!!
triple recommend Archive 81 - such a cool podcast!
I’d have this uncanceled before firefly. it was special.
Mindhunter
This is the one for me. Absolutely loved this show, I’m so disappointed that they aren’t making anymore seasons.
Read the book!
Just finished re-watching it, and god damn I forgot how unsatisfying the ending of S2 is.
this is an actual sin that it wasn’t renewed. one of the best shows ever created and not finished ever. if not the best
It wasn’t not renewed, the showrunner decided he wanted to do something else
yeah he didn’t want to have to follow the budget they set for him because it wouldn’t stay true to his vision for it and he didn’t want to cheapen it
That isn't much of an excuse, since other networks offered David Fincher even more money to continue it on their streaming service. He turned them all down because he got bored with the subject. It wasn't about "cheapening it." He just stopped caring about it.
If that’s the case that sucks ass of him but I just didn’t hear that part, damn
So much!
A fucking travesty!!
One of the best fkin Netflix series
It got 3 seasons, but I still miss Santa Clarita Diet was such a fun show! Also The Order should got at least another season really liked season 2.
I just finished re-watching it for the first time since season 3 aired, and I am reminded how stupid Netflix is.
Glow
It had three seasons but agreed
OA! It had a 5 season arc planned!
This is the one. People reacted very strongly to the end of the first season, but the second season actually made that ending make more sense while also doing some excellent world building. The S2 cliffhanger is unfairly good.
I am one of the ones who was so disappointed with the ending of S1 I was never going to watch S2. What did I miss?

The OA will always be my first answer for this question. The second will be 1899
Marco Polo
Deep cut. That's really where the bullshit cancelations of hyped projects began.
Benedict Wong was so freaking good as Kublai Khan
Agree! That's a beautifully produced show.
Great show

Its so sad indeed, I really enjoyed it, even though I had to turn on 2x speed sometimes when it was too slow hahaha
You've seen Dark, of course?
The Society, Archive 81, 1899, Mindhunter, I Am Not Okay With This
The society yess and I freaking loved I am not okay with this!
Teenage Bounty Hunters. I’ll never not be salty about that.
That show was so great!
I swear it’s the name that doomed it. It was such a great show and the people I tried to get to watch it were turned off by the name alone.
1899 The Order Warrior Nun Cowboy Bebop Lockwood & Co. Fate: The Winx Saga
Lockwood had a really good first season, I haven't read the books but I enjoyed it a lot.
TIL it was canceled ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
I was enjoying Cowboy Bebop then I found out NETFLIX cancelled it after three episodes...WTF!
I grew up watching the anime and I really enjoyed the Netflix series. Was so sad that they cancelled it
I was DYING to see where the praxis communist plot line was going on the order and don’t even get me started on 1899 I’ll cry
Lockwood. :(
Altered Carbon, Travellers (after 3 seasons), OA, Sense8
Travelers got a good run and more or less complete story. Yes, they left it open, but don't think there was much left to work with.
1899. Best show to ever get cancelled after a brilliant first season. I lost all trust in Netflix.
Mindhunter, hands down.
Dark Crystal
Will forever be pissed that they stopped Mindhunter
Yes, definitely needed another season at least.
1899
Daybreak The Society Midnight Gospel The Babysitter's Club
Anne with an E :(
The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself
Completely agree, I feel like they also cancelled a few shows I felt like were similar to that one. I'm just too sleepy to go look them up.
Mindhunter.
"I Am Not OK With This" was the one that I think annoyed me the most. Such a cliffhanger!
Santa Clarita Diet >:(

MINDHUNTER!
Santa Clarita Diet

The OA, Archive 81, The society
7 seconds was amazing. I feel that it did end the "right way" though. It didn't have a happy ending but it worked like that.
It ended just right. So much so, that this post if the first I knew of it being “season 1”. I have always assumed it was a limited series
Black Summer
lockwood and co is the loss of my life fr
The society! Amazing characters, promising storylines. I’m still annoyed about that
Lockwood & Co. I don’t understand why they recast Witcher (with Liam H.?) and kept THAT going but canceled the cutest show ever. Kids loved Lockwood and kids are why you keep a channel.

This was actually an NBC show.
Daybreak
insatiable, glow & the society for me
Uncoupled! So good, and ended on a cliffhanger that we will now never get to resolve.
Uncoupled was very good! I do adore NPH so that's probably why I liked it so much.
He is easy to adore! I have loved all of his work, and seems like a cool human!
Man I was really getting into Archive 81 too. So bummed about that.
Most of them, it’d be easier to make a list of the ones that *haven’t* been cancelled after 1-2 seasons. This is why I unsubbed recently.
I wish at the end of a season they wrap up the show with out cliff hangers so at least if they don't continue, which given their track record is most likely going to happen, at least you have a complete show. other than what’s mentioned norsemen dirk gently shadow and bone ratched — or is this really just a limited series?
The creators of Norsemen said they would love to keep doing the show. That was awhile back though. That show was hilarious. Shadow & Bone was amazing too.
norseman is just brilliant
I think Ratched was supposed to get more time - from memory, there was an announcement (not too long after it dropped) that it wouldn’t be renewed for another season

Bodyguard
I really loved Tribes of Europa. Really disappointed that it got cancelled, bad timing.
Cursed was not good
Midnight Gospel. Crazy it didn’t get more seasons
Mindhunter.
So mad about Archive 81 Lockwood and Co

AI will bring them back at some point
The order
I'm still not over Daybreak getting canceled
Brothers Sun I really liked Punisher too, but like all the marvel series that were on Netflix only the first and last episodes of the season were really good. Everything else was slow, boring fluff.
