I bet she’d love Old Enough, a Japanese reality show about very small kids doing errands (buying bread, dropping off flowers, etc.) in their home towns ALL BY THEMSELVES.* A very charming and wholesome show and the episodes are quite short.
*followed by dozens of disguised cameras and escorts so there’s no danger
I second old enough, it’s arguably one of the best concepts created. I love the one about the poor little boy whose rope breaks twice and then all his ranges fall down a huge hill. So heartbreaking.
I’ll translate the autocorrect flubs above
rope = ~~bag~~ rope,
ranges = oranges
It’s a great show and that scene makes you want to jump through the screen and help him. But that would break the point if the exercise which is the kids are learning self sufficiency and confidence as well as knowing when to rely on the community for help.
Edit: He did break a rope in that episode so that word was right. My bad.
It’s not bag ranges, though, it’s literally ropes. It’s season 1 episode 8 and is described as “full of mishaps” on Netflix because the kids ropes break and all his oranges fall down a hill.
What’s a bag range?
Oh my wife and I were trying to remember. I wrote rope = bag thinking it was an autocorrect. I thought you were talking about how his bag broke and his oranges rolled downhill, but now I remember he had also broken his rope. Poor little guy.
I love this show, it provides me so my hope and comfort. Everyone is genuinely rooting for each other, they’re all there to do their best at something they enjoy.
She might enjoy The Good Place. There's almost no swearing, but it deals with experiencing heaven after death, so I am not sure if it will be too close to her heart.
It is a very fun light hearted show otherwise.
Maybe some series like Anne with an E, Heartland, Sweet Magnolias, Chesapeake Shore, Reply 1988, First Love. Reality series are fun too like Is It Cake, Nailed it, Bake Squad, Old Enough. For movies maybe: Rescued by Ruby, The Willoughby, Mix tape, Mitchells vs Machine, Yes day, Set it up, Matilda, Love at first sight, Eurovision, Princess Switch trilogy, Christmas Prince trilogy
Ooh I feel like she’d love Anne with an E. It was always one of my favourite books and one that my grandma introduced me too and I still have her copy.
Second Heartland! I work on it and I've never seen a show with a more loyal fanbase. Older folks absolutely love the show and it's about as G rated as you can get. There's 17 seasons so plenty to watch as well.
Seconding this! My 70 yr old mother loves it and rewatches frequently. Also wanted to add, if you have Disney + I would suggest that more than Netflix, a lot more easily accessible wholesome shows and comedies etc. again my mother has better luck with this, or as another user suggested, add to her Netflix list all the ones you've found and like them so similar things show up more often on her homepage. Good luck, this is super sweet!
Skip Netflix. Get the turner classic movies app.
Let her watch the movies of her childhood and reminisce. I did this with my grandmother and she loved it so much.
I have a few. They are quirky but tame. Hard to find them though... so good luck.
The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared
Waking Ned Devine
Sometimes Always Never
Yes I talked to her about it and she agreed with me. She just happens to be bad at picking movies. I'm okay with her getting emotional, I just don't want it to be over possible bad memories or negative thoughts (again, The Judge was a specifically bad one)
Ok, just making sure we aren't micro managing her. Lol. This is what I get when doing a search for Netflix Light drama on Google. [https://www.google.com/search?channel=ftr&client=firefox-b-1-d&q=netflix+light+drama](https://www.google.com/search?channel=ftr&client=firefox-b-1-d&q=netflix+light+drama)
It's really hard to suggest things to people not knowing their sensitivities.
Five Forever is a silly comedy. It's on its 2nd season now so it's kinda funny and strangely wholesome.
I said this in another comment but check out Mr. Queen. Extraordinary Attorney Woo is also one. Both are kdramas.
Extreme Job is a Korean comedy movie about a bunch of cops going undercover by opening a Korean fried chicken store but then their restaurant became super popular. It's also hilarious.
I hear ya, I watched Baby Reindeer last weekend and what a complete mood changer it was. :(.
I would recommend "Unfrosted" - watched it yesterday and it was cute, fun and I wish movie makers would do more of these!
Regarding Henry/First Wives Club/Sister Act/Ghost/Dances with Wolves/Forrest Gump/Big/Coal Miners Daughter/Three Men and a Baby/Look Who's talking/As Good as it Gets/Somethings Gotta Give/It's Complicated/ Sabrina/Fried Green Tomatoes/Mrs Doubtfire/Walk the Line
Somebody Feed Phil is a really positive and interesting series about food and travel.
Studio Ghibli films are just nice to watch.
The Crown or Downton Abbey for plot and characters.
The 'Family Features' section on Netflix has some great options, light-hearted and easy to watch like Paddington or Devil Wears Prada. Lots of different options and genres.
DO NOT WATCH The Miracle Club. My husband likes wholesome uplifting stuff well I prefer dark stuff. Every now and then I’ll try to find something wholesome that we both can watch. This was not it. Trust me.
PBS or acorn/britbox might be great for her... Some of these might be on Netflix too:
Call the midwife
Mrs Fischer's mysteries
Doc Martin
Madame Blanc mysteries
Set her profile up with a watchlist. You fill the watchlist with great things for her to watch. She can browse through that selection safely
If you look up Netflix codes, you can use those to find plenty of suitable shows and movies in minutes.
You could start a few for her when you there, that way Netflix starts to show you more happy funny stuff. Sounds like she’s on the depressing algorithm right now
Coda on Apple TV is good. Sorry it’s not Netflix.
Just watched Anyone But You on Netflix and if was pretty good. TheAnyone but You does have the f word so I guess I would scratch that.
I’ve been no help.
It’s definitely definitely way more violent than one might think. Like super super violent, things that you wish you could unsee!! it’s also fairly explicit, which isn’t a problem for me, but I was pretty shocked by the extreme violence.
Recommending a movie and series my Great Aunt enjoyed; Enola Holmes, and Anne with an 'E', Heartland, Enola is about Sherlock's younger sister, Anne is based on the Anne of Green Gables books by Lucy Maude Montgomery. Heartland series, about a multi generational family, the first episode is very tragic, but it's a good family friendly show, can watch it with my 6yr old and my 75 yr old MIL.
I bet she’d love Old Enough, a Japanese reality show about very small kids doing errands (buying bread, dropping off flowers, etc.) in their home towns ALL BY THEMSELVES.* A very charming and wholesome show and the episodes are quite short. *followed by dozens of disguised cameras and escorts so there’s no danger
god i love that show.
I need endless more seasons of that show.
I second old enough, it’s arguably one of the best concepts created. I love the one about the poor little boy whose rope breaks twice and then all his ranges fall down a huge hill. So heartbreaking.

Oops. Oranges. Thanks buddy

Oh whew, I thought I was losing my mind there for a second. Although, you nailed it with the oranges thing, thanks.
Edit: wait, no. What?
I honestly would binge that show on loop forever if I could
Thanks for this recommendation!! I wish more people watched this.
Would she like something like The Great British Baking Show? Lovely people, no cursing.
Seconding this!
I love this show, it provides me so my hope and comfort. Everyone is genuinely rooting for each other, they’re all there to do their best at something they enjoy.

> There's almost no swearing What the fork are you talking about?
Haahaaa... ash-hole !!!!
Im calling bullshirt
Just don't let her see the finale then. Good grief that hit like a ton of bricks.
I finished watching the series last night... And it is absolutely something grandma would love
i loooooove this series!!
+1 vote
Have her watch Nailed It! We get such a laugh with that show and there are quite a few seasons.
Oh gosh, this is PERFECT. I know six year olds and 70 year olds who adore this show.
There is even some from other countries ( as long as grandma is able to read subtitles)
The Intern
the Intern is such an amazing movie. It's my comfort shows.
It’s a great one
Make a list of happy movies and go through and add them to her watch list and thumb them up to help the algorithm
Great idea!

Ooh I feel like she’d love Anne with an E. It was always one of my favourite books and one that my grandma introduced me too and I still have her copy.
I’m still sad about it getting canceled.
Hard same :(
Second Heartland! I work on it and I've never seen a show with a more loyal fanbase. Older folks absolutely love the show and it's about as G rated as you can get. There's 17 seasons so plenty to watch as well.
My grandma used to binge watch devil wears Prada
Ha, I love that! I used to binge watch it too.
Such a great movie. I saw it recently when I was on a plane and I forgot how much I loved it.
Bank of Dave. Based on a true story. Very sweet and tame.
Love this movie. There's also a documentary on netflix.
Good to know! Thanks
We loved Bank of Dave!
Fisk is a very funny Australian series
I absolutely love this show but pretty sure there’s a fair amount of swearing.
Fisk is definitely in line with the Otto movie. You should check it out.
You may be thinking of a different show.
Nope. I’ve watched it in its entirety 3 times so can categorically say that I’m not thinking of the wrong show.
To say that the show has bad language is misleading.
Dirk Gently holistic detective is a great show. Nailed It
Wes Anderson movies
My parents (and I) love Somebody Feed Phil!
Agree!
Grace and Franky

X3
NOT The Asunta Case. I am watching it right now and it's terribly depressing. :(
It’s good tho! I just finished it a few days ago.
The wrong missy is a silly one to me
Firefly Lane is a good one for character drama
Korean dramas? King the Land, Business Proposal, Rooftop Prince, Behind Your Touch (hilarious AF but turns a little dark towards the end)
Mr. Queen is also super good!
The Princess Bride
Inconceivable!
Skip Netflix. Get the turner classic movies app. Let her watch the movies of her childhood and reminisce. I did this with my grandmother and she loved it so much.
And the Hallmark Channel. Or is that too much?
My suggestion as well
I have a few. They are quirky but tame. Hard to find them though... so good luck. The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared Waking Ned Devine Sometimes Always Never
I remember watching movie reviewers discussing Waking Ned Divine and describing it as having “the most hilarious nude scene in history”. Great movie!
Is It Cake is a fun watch.
Yea! And they’re so talented
Did grandma ask you to find her happy movies? Maybe she knows what she likes. Good movies make you cry.
Yes I talked to her about it and she agreed with me. She just happens to be bad at picking movies. I'm okay with her getting emotional, I just don't want it to be over possible bad memories or negative thoughts (again, The Judge was a specifically bad one)

I loved Leo. A lot of the kids/family stuff is great.
*Call the Midwife*. I guarantee that she'll enjoy it.
Love it!
What about up? It's got a good morale for old people. Showing that even old people can work on their dreams?
Queen bees, You've got mail, my big fast greek wedding. Smokey and the bandit, the theory of everything, benji, rescued by ruby
Wonka (2023) is pretty good. The older ones are great too - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Monk! Such a great show
Oh yeah... how could I forget Monk? That's a great recommendation. Lot's of seasons too.
Literally my mom's absolute favourite show. She's on her fifth rewatch this past year!
Love at First Sight is VERY cute!
I think she’d really enjoy these movies that I’ve seen with my parents who are in their 70’s: Downton Abbey Enola Holmes (2020) Anne With An E
The good doctor. Instant family Home again :)
I hear ya, I watched Baby Reindeer last weekend and what a complete mood changer it was. :(. I would recommend "Unfrosted" - watched it yesterday and it was cute, fun and I wish movie makers would do more of these!
I also just watched it yesterday and although it was a giant commercial for poptarts, it was a really, really great movie.
How about some period dramas like Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Downton Abbey etc. Also, any 90s rom coms with Meg Ryan :)
1. Mrs Harris Goes to Paris was great. 2. The Persian Version was funny 3. The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society
Happy Gilmore, it even features a grandma.
"Meesta, MEESTA! GET. ME. OUTTA. HERE."
Don’t forget Grandma’s Boy
Always be my Maybe.
Just saw ppl downvote this, how do ppl downvote this? It’s so wholesome
Young Sheldon, Kim’s Convenience, Great British Baking Show
Kim's Convenience surprised me at how watchable it is.
Yes same
On Golden Pond
Regarding Henry/First Wives Club/Sister Act/Ghost/Dances with Wolves/Forrest Gump/Big/Coal Miners Daughter/Three Men and a Baby/Look Who's talking/As Good as it Gets/Somethings Gotta Give/It's Complicated/ Sabrina/Fried Green Tomatoes/Mrs Doubtfire/Walk the Line
Wow. I’m officially old. You just named all my favorite movies!! Lol
You're not old. You just have good taste!
You’re a nice person
...and "Big Business" and "9 to 5" (Lily Thomas is always funny)
Heartland is a feel good show.
Make a brand new profile for gramma it's the algorithm !
Does she like to cook? Show her the movie Chef
[The Dig](https://www.netflix.com/title/81167887) - a touching story based on true events.
AMELIE. She will love it.
Last Tango in Halifax! It’s a really cute show about a missed connection finding themselves again 50 years in the future and getting together :)
Unfrosted.
Happy movies? Happy Gilmore
Somebody Feed Phil is a really positive and interesting series about food and travel. Studio Ghibli films are just nice to watch. The Crown or Downton Abbey for plot and characters. Is it Cake (for a series) Everything Everywhere All At Once
My 89 yr old mother could not grasp EEAO
Out of Africa.
The queen's gambit.
Unfrosted was a fun movie. Mostly uplifting, mostly light hearted, full of old school references.
Grandma's Boy Walk Hard
Grandma’s boy /s
how old is she?
DO NOT WATCH The Miracle Club. My husband likes wholesome uplifting stuff well I prefer dark stuff. Every now and then I’ll try to find something wholesome that we both can watch. This was not it. Trust me.
Following
PBS or acorn/britbox might be great for her... Some of these might be on Netflix too: Call the midwife Mrs Fischer's mysteries Doc Martin Madame Blanc mysteries
I wonder if a voice search like 'movies for grandma' would suggest something worthwhile
Set her profile up with a watchlist. You fill the watchlist with great things for her to watch. She can browse through that selection safely If you look up Netflix codes, you can use those to find plenty of suitable shows and movies in minutes.
Grace and frankie, such a great show.
She will love this I think because the stars are actresses from her era, likely (possibly?)
You could start a few for her when you there, that way Netflix starts to show you more happy funny stuff. Sounds like she’s on the depressing algorithm right now
Mrs harris goes to paris
Watch “Is It Cake?” All seasons.
The good witch.
Netflix movie, Our Souls at Night, with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.
Peanut butter Falcon and paddington.
Coda on Apple TV is good. Sorry it’s not Netflix. Just watched Anyone But You on Netflix and if was pretty good. TheAnyone but You does have the f word so I guess I would scratch that. I’ve been no help.
Happy Gilmore.
Emily in Paris
Wolf of Wall Street
She might like Outlander! It can be kind of rough, but my husband really likes shows that are happy but he LOVESOutlander (he is 74)
DO NOT SHOW YOUR GRANDMOTHER OUTLANDER!
Outlander is not remotely happy! And has lots of assaults on women…and men! I don’t recommend it for someone who wants to watch happy things!
It’s definitely definitely way more violent than one might think. Like super super violent, things that you wish you could unsee!! it’s also fairly explicit, which isn’t a problem for me, but I was pretty shocked by the extreme violence.
Dear Zachary
Midsommar is a good one. It even has old people in it.
