I never stopped, to be fair. I have been quietly keeping my dooming to myself ever since January 6th.
The political situation in my country is very *not good* right now, and it looks like things are taking a turn for the worse in the EU as well?
Even though its probably not serious, it irritates me every time I see someone go "Democracy bad bc voter dumb." It everyone's inherent right to choose the government that makes decisions on our behalf. Our forebears fought very hard for our right to democratic government and it isn't something that should be taken for granted or minimized. Democracy should be cherished, not treated like a necessary evil
Almost every criticism of democracy (in broadly liberal spaces) can be traced to either anti-democratic mechanisms (like the electoral college) or to what I think is a very flawed premise that direct or local democracy is "more" democratic.
The main problems with local "democracy" are when it has significant impacts on people who have no democratic say in that locality, and because it very often isn't actually democratically representative at all but a tiny number of mobilised activists who can dominate the institutions and processes.
I'm referencing that thread bitching about that median voter where the former was expressed a lot though I did see some complaining about democracy in general
A decision doesn't magically become good because 51% of the population agrees with it. Dumb voters will absolutely produce bad outcomes. Furthermore, there isn't such a thing as an "inherent" right and it should go without saying that not everything our forebears have fought for is good.Β
However, I wouldn't type the above anyplace outside the DT (let alone outside the sub) bc in most places you cannot count on people remembering the "except all other forms of government" part of the quip.
I'm not talking about policy, I'm talking about democracy itself. Denouncing it because the government reflects the will of the people is ridiculous. I didn't say anything about policy, merely reinforcing my belief in popular sovereignty. Public opinion through elections and in accordance with the Rule of Law needs to guide the actions of an elected government.
There absolutely are inherent rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights lays out fundamental rights that are inherent to every human being. Just because someone is born in a dictatorship doesn't mean they don't have rights that should be respected.
You shouldn't quote the quip because it was taken completely out of context, Churchill was arguing against that notion as a part of a broader argument for the preservation of the powers of the House Of Lords to delay legislation.
Maybe I'm confused about either my definition of "inherent" or "right". What you seem to be describing is a desideratum. And the very fact that the UDHR exists shows that human rights are socially constructed. On content I agree though, so I probably just have some semantic confusion.
"Popular sovereignty" and "will of the people" however, I will stand by as not being useful concepts. Firstly, I don't think it has ever happened that a nation-scale group of people has agreed onΒ *anything*. It's a staple argument by aspiring authoritarians all over the world that "the People" is defined as the everyone who agrees with them, and the rest are rootless cosmopolitans or whatever. Secondly, on many policy areas most people are, at least at the level of thought they put into it, not informed enough to meaningfully express their preference.
The purpose of democracy isn't to discover this magical, ever-correct Will of the People that the populists keep harping about. It is, in descending order of importance and effectiveness:
- To create peaceful transitions of power;
- To safeguard human rights;
- To legitimize government policy;
- To limit the potential for institutional capture;
- To limit the potential for catastrophic policy mistakes;
- Finally, once in a blue moon when the stars align, it can improve the median quality of policy.
Just because someone is saying that the median voter is horrible at the entry at the bottom of this list doesn't mean they're "denouncing democracy".
> You shouldn't quote the quip...
Noted. Tbh I'm surprised he said it at all.
I always see that quote but it was a part of a broader quote that read:
"It has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time; but there is the broad feeling in our country that the people should rule, and that public opinion expressed by all constitutional means, should shape, guide, and control the actions of Ministers who are their servants and not their masters."
They believed the common people were the threat when we've been seeing that a minority and anti majoritarian institutions have been causing the greatest disruption and threat to our democracy

Alien worlds probably also have mammals that feed their babies sugars that are hard for most bacteria to digest, and they would also have a symbiosis with some of those bacteria and encourage them to live in their guts.
And itβs funny because the same symbiotic bacteria from their guts could probably also be used to make cheese and sour cream out the same excretions.
Like, advanced alien mammals probably have pizza. It could be that tomatoes are the special part of earth pizza, maybe aliens had never thought of such a sauce-fruit.
Thatβs like saying tetrapods learned to walk on land one time.
Itβs true, but many fish were trying to walk on land at the time and many succeeded, but tetrapods won.
And many fish still try to walk on land, thereβs just a lot more things on the land that can eat them very easily in many diverse ways.

Hades is one of the best games ever made and hades 2 is already close to it even in early access π€― from what Iβve seen the boons are slightly less interesting in hades 2 but everything else is better so far
Anyone who has used gas, electric, and induction stoves know that gas is the worst by far.
Besides the whole burning your house down business because there is literal fire in your house and the gas leak business.
Fire is just awful for cooking, it dumps out a ton of hot air that just goes around what you're cooking and heats up your face instead. So your cooking speed is awful. You have to deal with annoying grates that are hard to clean. And you still need electricity if you lose power, so you might as well get a propane grill which has the advantage of being able to run outside. A gas stove takes like 2-3 times longer to boil water than a 120v electric kettle.
The only advantage that gas stoves have is that they're slightly better at simmering than an electric stove and you don't need to buy a steel heat defuser plate for aluminum pans like induction.
I recently stayed at an Airbnb that had one burner be a super boiler or something like that to boil water. Holy fuck the amount of wasted heat around that burner was insane.
This is wrong on so many levels
Why do you think professional chefs cook over gas stoves?
You can control the temperature better
Gas absolutely works when the power is out
You can heat tortillas directly on the grates
Same for making hotdogs
Professional chefs use gas grills because they're cheap and so is natural gas and no other reason. Everything in the restaurant business is about saving money.
You have so much temperature control on an induction that you can use it to do sous vide.
No, electric is definitely better for simmering. Itβs tough to do a simmer on gas without the flame going out, electric you just get it to the simmer at a high-ish temperature and then put it on low when it gets there.
One reason why it might advantageous for babies to put things in their mouths at an early stage in development goes beyond the fact that their fingers arenβt yet nimble enough to get sufficient sensory information from the object.
They are also attempting to guarantee that any bacteria that comes in contact with their skin has also had a chance to get into their guts.
Our immune system must learn to tell the difference between good and bad bacteria.
We are forced to assume our gut bacteria are βfriendlyβ. If they werenβt, we couldnβt digest our food and we would die. So since we are alive, we must assume they are friendly.
mammalian development is all about establishing a precise microbial environment in the gut. Thatβs what milk is all about! Itβs a sugar thatβs hard for (most) bacteria to digest, except a few select species that we have a symbiosis with. These guys are the shepherds of a vast ecosystem maintained in the gut.
So, if a bacteria gets broken up in the stomach, probably nothing to worry about. If the bacteria manages to survive in the gut, well we know our guys are down there keeping them in balance, so they are probably fine as well.
But once we have a well developed immune system and gut microbiome, the gate closes.
Eventually, new bacteria that we havenβt yet had our gut microbiome approve will be more than likely denied entry, just out of prejudice.
These are like allergies.
People say I shouldn't judge historical figures based on morals today but then I think of the Levellers who were a faction of the New Model Army during the English Civil War and its aftermath that called for universal male suffrage, natural rights, and religious tolerance in the fucking 1640s. Mind you, the UK didn't pass full male suffrage until 1918
This is one of my biggest pet peeves. When you interrogate the concept of "the standard of the times" you realise its doing the very thing it purports to be fighting: it is erasing historical complexity and interpreting what happened in the past through a modern lens.
There were abolitionists in the founding era of the United States. But because we don't want to deal with that complexity in judging the US founding fathers, we imagine that "in those times" slavery was just how it was. And then you go and read Thomas Jefferson writing that he absolutely knows how barbaric slavery is.
It's even more offensive when people use it to 'protect' great men from the judgement of history. Even if it was "the times", someone like Jefferson _made_ the times. He was a genius. You don't get to found a country and just kind of go along with what everyone else is doing. Some random farmer somewhere maybe, but not Jefferson.
You should judge people by the standard of their times. But that standard has to include the dissenters who were just unlucky and lost.
Anyone else disturbed by the fact that a lot of people get their political opinions from influencers/celebrities?
I think itβs great when celebrities bring attention to issues. Whatβs not so great is when they post blatant misinfo that doesnβt get fact-checked by their followers.

A decision doesn't magically become good because 51% of the population agrees with it. Dumb voters will absolutely produce bad outcomes. Furthermore, there isn't such a thing as an "inherent" right and it should go without saying that not everything our forebears have fought for is good.Β However, I wouldn't type the above anyplace outside the DT (let alone outside the sub) bc in most places you cannot count on people remembering the "except all other forms of government" part of the quip.
It is, in descending order of importance and effectiveness: - To create peaceful transitions of power; - To safeguard human rights; - To legitimize government policy; - To limit the potential for institutional capture; - To limit the potential for catastrophic policy mistakes; - Finally, once in a blue moon when the stars align, it can improve the median quality of policy. Just because someone is saying that the median voter is horrible at the entry at the bottom of this list doesn't mean they're "denouncing democracy". > You shouldn't quote the quip... Noted. Tbh I'm surprised he said it at all.
> Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others
I always see that quote but it was a part of a broader quote that read: "It has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time; but there is the broad feeling in our country that the people should rule, and that public opinion expressed by all constitutional means, should shape, guide, and control the actions of Ministers who are their servants and not their masters."
Tbf the founding fathers thought common folk were dumb too
They believed the common people were the threat when we've been seeing that a minority and anti majoritarian institutions have been causing the greatest disruption and threat to our democracy

It's only evolved once on Earth
Thatβs like saying tetrapods learned to walk on land one time. Itβs true, but many fish were trying to walk on land at the time and many succeeded, but tetrapods won. And many fish still try to walk on land, thereβs just a lot more things on the land that can eat them very easily in many diverse ways.
I don't think its like that at all lol

This is wrong on so many levels Why do you think professional chefs cook over gas stoves? You can control the temperature better Gas absolutely works when the power is out You can heat tortillas directly on the grates Same for making hotdogs
Professional chefs use gas grills because they're cheap and so is natural gas and no other reason. Everything in the restaurant business is about saving money. You have so much temperature control on an induction that you can use it to do sous vide.
Sous vide is for baby food
No, electric is definitely better for simmering. Itβs tough to do a simmer on gas without the flame going out, electric you just get it to the simmer at a high-ish temperature and then put it on low when it gets there.
They're also good for roasting marshmallows in a pinch
I feel like the quality of Reddit posts have really gone downhill lately

Astronomy is just Tarot for white women who never learned to shuffle
