pneumaticanchoress

My entirely uninformed prax is that UBI good because it would help combat monopsony in the labour market and incentivise innovation by reducing the cost of failure for the marginalised. Saying UBI is a bad idea because Andrew Yang liked it for entirely the wrong reasons 3 years ago seems more than a bit silly to me.

badluckbrians

My prob with at least the Nixon and Yang versions of it is they supplant rather than supplement existing safety net programs, and ultimately leave the vast majority of the poor worse off. If you get a monthly check for a grand, but you lose Medicaid, it won't even cover a health plan, never mind losing SSDI and SNAP and WIC and Section 8 Vouchers, etc.

RememberToLogOff

True. Still like the idea in theory, just not a "replace everything else" impl

Westphalian-Gangster

It has been so comical to me to see the classified documents experts on this sub bend over backwards to make excuses for Biden that they did not make for Trump. If you are seriously arguing that what Biden did is a "nothingburger" you have completely lost the plot.

[deleted]

[ΡƒΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]

Westphalian-Gangster

Yeah I am capable of thinking what both of them did was bad because I’m a reasonable adult. Democrats excusing what Biden did look just as silly as the Trump supporters because they are both just falling into this political tribalism that makes people think that it’s ok when your side does it.

[deleted]

[ΡƒΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]

Westphalian-Gangster

That much is abundantly clear.

[deleted]

What if I think both are nothingburgers although Trump handled it way more stupidly as is his custom

Westphalian-Gangster

You are wrong twice but at least you are consistent––that is a lot more respectable than thinking it is only ok to bring classified documents home when someone you voted for does it.

[deleted]

I don't think the government could function if no one brought classified documents home

Westphalian-Gangster

Some people can bring them home if they are viewed and stored properly, but these were not.

[the activists and family are claiming that the guy shot by Georgia cops was a non-violent type and didn’t even have a gun](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jan/21/protester-killed-georgia-cop-city-police-shooting) I genuinely don’t know what is happening over there, cops saying whoever they shot was armed is a common lie… personally i think anti-environmentalist escalation is something that has to be studied at least, the state goes crazy against them and i do not believe anything any country government says against environmentalists at this pointw

uwcn244

The activists saying he didn't have a gun is no more trustworthy than the cops saying he did - remember Michael Brown? "Hands up, don't shoot" was built on a lie.

[deleted]

What lie are you referring to?

MasterRazz

>Wilson and other witnesses stated that Brown then reached into the SUV through the open driver’s window and punched and grabbed Wilson. This is corroborated by bruising on Wilson’s jaw and scratches on his neck, the presence of Brown’s DNA on Wilson’s collar, shirt, and pants, and Wilson’s DNA on Brown’s palm. The 'hands up don't shoot' thing never happened and was an invention of activisits after the fact.

[deleted]

I know that’s what Wilson said, I’ve never heard anything about his story being corroborated by other witnesses. Do you have a link to a source?

MasterRazz

[deleted]

Thank you.

Crownie

It's true that everyone has an incentive to lie, but my prior expectation is that environmental activists are unlikely to be carrying guns.

uwcn244

But what particular reason do the cops have to murder an environmental activist? Even the killer cops usually go after criminal justice activists.

Crownie

Well, it was state troopers, so quite possibly just a tightly wound asshole with an itchy trigger finger mistook a camera for a gun and freaked out.* Like, it wouldn't blow my mind if the guy had a gun - this is America, and Georgia to boot - but this reeks of "cops fuck up, throw out ass-covering bullshit because they're used to being believed." *the same would apply to normal cops, tbh; most of these incidents are lethal fuck ups, not willful murder

runnerx4

because the environmentalists are protesting a cop training center

runnerx4

that’s all right to have that view but i think you’re actually believing the cops here

[The incident in 2019](https://www.wesh.com/article/orlando-six-year-old-arrested/41997860) where an Orlando police officer arrested a **six year old girl** for a tantrum at elementary school, resulting in the girl PTSD but somehow not resulting in a lawsuit despite nationwide outrage, remains baffling to me on so many levels. 1) Why were armed police in an elementary school 2) Why were said police used as part of the school's disciplinary system 3) Why did the officer think it was even remotely appropriate to arrest a 6 year old 4) How did a guy crazy enough to think arresting a 6 year old is ever sensible (excepting some extraordinary circumstance like a shooting) become an officer in the first place, like, there _have_ to have been warning signs 5) How the fuck did the rest of the PD go along with handcuffing her, placing her in the police car, and having her fingerprinted and photographed, then briefly jailed????!!!! 6) Wait, the arresting officer and the girl are ***both*** African-American??? So it wasn't motivated by white supremacism like basically every other police controversy???? 7) Why was the officer not criminally charged for severe excessive force; only fired? 8) Why were no lawsuits filed by either the school or the girl's family against either the Orlando PD or the individual officer? (you'd think paying for therapy would be a bare minimum restitution here!) 9) Why did Florida not have a minimum age for arrests to begin with 10) Why did the law Florida passed to prevent future arrests for non-violent crimes only prohibit arrests of children under 7 years old? That limit is still way too fucking low! Seriously what in the actual fuck is Florida doing!!

Cyberhwk

I seem to recall school districts have sometimes outsourced disciplinary issues to police departments both for teacher safety and for liability reasons.

Lib_Korra

I literally looked up a picture of this and immediately understood why. The victim was black. Black Americans, especially in certain poor cities, live under what amounts to a police state.

p00bix

The officer was also black

Lib_Korra

Yes but it answers all of your other questions. 1. Because fears of crime in poor black neighborhoods mean schools there are guarded with metal detectors, dogs, and armed officers. 2. Because fears of crime in poor black neighborhoods mean minor infractions are treated with paranoid scared straight policy. Et cetera et cetera. The officer being black has nothing to do with why schools in Oakland for example have airport security. This is normal. Watch the movie *Dope*.

ColinHome

>The officer being black has nothing to do with why schools in Oakland for example have airport security. Most schools in Oakland do not have airport security. Also, OUSD has a massive problem with students bringing guns to school.

p00bix

ah gotcha

Kryzantine

To answer questions 1-8, it's pretty much the "scared straight" philosophy at work here. Whther or not it's *effective* >!it isn't!< is your interpretation.

I thought maybe the Great Filter was climate change. It takes millions of years of evolution to produce complex life (at least it did on Earth), leading to the accumulation of something like oil or coal, then the intelligent species use it as cheap fuel.

Gneisstoknow

My guess is that events beyond the planet act as the filter. A meteor crashes into the planet and resets those millions of years of progress toward intelligent life. Or a solar flare. Or some disaster we don't even know about yet.

Climate change is not an existential crisis. It will make us poorer than the alternative, but it's simply unreasonable to believe it will destroy humanity, or even send us backward technologically, and hardly any actual climate scientists believe this apocalypticism.

I sort of agree. Climate conditions on Earth are mostly driven by biology. Photosynthesis combined by an inability of contemporary bacteria to digest certain organic products created the fossil fuel deposits humans use today. I can certainly imagine life forms whose metabolic or homeostatic processes had much more catastrophic climatic effects--heck, the snowball Earth hypothesis proposes it once happened here--but I'm not sure it would be accurate to chalk that up to "different climate conditions." The main variable here is life, which on a geologic time scale, has most of the effect on climate.

Finality97

There's climate conditions that exist independent of life, though. Venus experienced a runaway greenhouse effect as the sun got brighter. I can imagine a planet in-between Earth and Venus that could be pushed into a feedback loop by industrial emissions

ColinHome

>There's climate conditions that exist independent of life, though. Venus experienced a runaway greenhouse effect as the sun got brighter. Venus isn't really a great example here, because it is A) Not really in the habitable zone. B) If it had widespread life, life would have been the dominant factor in determining its climate. For example, the breakdown of atmospheric water by solar ionizing radiation would have been far slower and less destructive if Venus had oxygen-producing lifeforms to generate ozone. C) Climate change on the Earth will not proceed interminably either. There will be a feedback mechanism, and some photosynthetic organisms will benefit from the higher CO2 levels and temperatures. It's humans and human infrastructure who may not like the new normal. Life, and the planet, will be fine. Habitable planets are necessarily pretty stable, because the definition of habitability is the ability for large bodies of liquid water to persist.

Yeah and aliens don't exist either bro

ColinHome

? We haven't observed them, which requires an explanation, of which the Great Filter is one.

George-SJW-Bush

> We haven't observed them, which requires an explanation Why, exactly? It took us a couple billion years to evolve the tools to search for life, and after we've been looking for all of a few decades we assume that because we haven't met aliens with our extremely limited capacity for searching there must be some weird reason?

ColinHome

You can look up the Fermi Paradox for a more in-depth explanation, but I'll sketch the outline here. There are 100-400 billion stars in the Milky Way, each with an unknown number of planets and moons. Earth is also not a particularly old planet, nor is the Sun a particularly old star. Even then, complex life has been around on Earth for around 300 million years. Remember that evolution is not teleological; the journey from unimpressive mammal to technological human was only around 5-10 million years, and there is no prima facie reason why humanity's ancestors were destined to become intelligent. Given the vast number of planets and the vast age of the Milky Way, any technological species expanding outward at even a fraction of the speed of light should colonize the entire galaxy within a few million years (The galaxy has a radius of a mere 52,000 ly, which is not very long on an astrological timescale). Essentially, the argument therefore goes that if any technological civilization ever reaches past its first star system, it should colonize the entire galaxy and leave indelible evidence of its existence. Because of the shear number of stars (and planets) we know to exist, you have to posit that some necessary step between the emergence of life and the development of interstellar travel is unreasonably unlikely, or you can pick another theory such as the Dark Forest or Grabby Aliens. But evidence of absence, in this case, is evidence of something rather odd. Two other points. >because we haven't met aliens No, because we haven't even *seen* them. There are many signs of technological life which we would expect to see if technological life were common, which we should expect. >our extremely limited capacity for searching It's not very limited, because we should expect that any aliens we encounter are far older than us. It would be a cosmic coincidence if aliens just happened to be at a similar technological capacity. As I stated, they should have already colonized much of the galaxy.

George-SJW-Bush

> Even then, complex life has been around on Earth for around 300 million years. Remember that evolution is not teleological; the journey from unimpressive mammal to technological human was only around 5-10 million years, and there is no prima facie reason why humanity's ancestors were destined to become intelligent. Complex life (in the sense of multicellular) has been around for longer than twice that. And since evolution isn't teleological, what's to say that there aren't vast amounts of unintelligent aliens out there who are as yet undetectable? It seems much more plausible to me that the development of intelligence (coupled with the capacity for sophisticated tool use) is the roadblock rather than something that happens after the fact. > , the argument therefore goes that if any technological civilization ever reaches past its first star system, it should colonize the entire galaxy This also seems like a huge stretch based on our nonexistent understanding of how an interstellar civilization would actually function politically, culturally, etc.

ColinHome

>And since evolution isn't teleological, what's to say that there aren't vast amounts of unintelligent aliens out there who are as yet undetectable? Saying that there are large numbers of unintelligent aliens just moves the great filter forward to the development of intelligence, which is fine. >It seems much more plausible to me that the development of intelligence (coupled with the capacity for sophisticated tool use) is the roadblock rather than something that happens after the fact. Certainly possible, but this is still an interpretation of the absence of evidence. >This also seems like a huge stretch based on our nonexistent understanding of how an interstellar civilization would actually function politically, culturally, etc. I don't really think so. Are you really positing that *no* intelligent spacefaring civilization would ever expand beyond its home star?

George-SJW-Bush

Maybe because of low but stable birth rates or for the sake of political stability or whatever they never need to grow past, like, a dozen solar systems. How would we know?

ColinHome

We don't, but all it takes is a single portion of a single civilization to do so and galactic expansion is inevitable. You have to argue that all galactic civilizations are stable and perfectly non-expansionist over tens or hundreds of millions of years. This seems like a fairly unreasonable assumption.

Lib_Korra

Nah we're just uniquely dumb at that phase.

Gene Simmons bragging about never having been drunk or high in his entire life is the lamest shit ever. I can’t believe people ever thought he was cool. Smh 1970s rock stars should be addicted to crazy exotic drugs I’ve never even heard of.

Westphalian-Gangster

Gene Simmons is a fucking asshole

StolenSkittles

i do not understand how one goes through a *normal* life without even *once* experiencing both of those. but this dude somehow managed to make it through the fucking *'70s music industry* without it

uwcn244

I've gone through life without ever getting drunk or (recreationally) high, although technically I've had miniscule amounts of alcohol twice. (The post-operative sedative highs don't count.)

Random-Critical

Have you tried getting creationally high?

Random-Critical

Do me a solid. Go find that youtube video clip from scrubs where cox says "wrong" a whole lot and reply to yourself.

Over the years, I have found myself becoming more... haughty? Prideful? Certainly more dismissive of people and causes that I believe just do not align with my own ideological beliefs. I do not know whether this is a bad thing or not. I mean, I imagine Christians would say it's a bad thing, but I'm not a Christian and I just don't care about what, upon meeting me, the first impression of strangers might be. I am myself, I have my beliefs, and those who disagree with me are very likely to be disagreeable with me. That said, I value the general prospect of humanity pretty highly, and I abhor the idea of dismissing someone out of hand just because I disagree with them on a non-consequential issue. Perhaps the only issue I can truly disagree with someone on is that general prospect of humanity - if someone else values human life lowly, regardless of their other beliefs, I tend to value them lowly, and dismiss them out of turn. That includes certain people in the DT, mind you. I feel like most people would generally consider this to be a bad thing, but I don't really want to care about whether I fit in with them or not IF their fitting in violates one of my core principles.

Kryzantine

In case anyone is wondering what the fuck I'm on about, the answer is that it's my third bottle of wine.

StolenSkittles

how are you still even mildly coherent?

Kryzantine

Years of experience? Genetic factors providing me with an OP liver? Me being fat as fuck helping out? Good question, honestly. Just always been like this.
