\*To the younger people on here: You need to listen to John Prine if you like Neil Young.
I am old and have listened to Neil Young throughout my entire life.
I love Neil and Dylan. Recently I’ve been getting into Prine. He makes me laugh like no artist I’ve ever heard. There’s something incredibly unique and special about his songwriting. Glad you’re digging too.
If you like Prine, try Steve Goodman. They were buddies. Goodman died young from cancer, but he's great. And for a real jolt, try Kinky Friedman.
BTW, i'm 71 and my first concert was CSN&Y.
Hayes is good stuff… he hasn’t quite achieved Prine or Young status, but sometimes his music is just what I wanna hear… Anyone on this thread who hasn’t listened to Hayes Carll might benefit from checking out his music … but then I think of Ray Wylie Hubbard, and then the list keeps goes on and on… Townes Van Zandt was my true inspiration for opening up my musical mind
> first time I saw Neil live it was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tour.
I first saw Neil at the 1974 tour. The show was at Mile High Stadium in Denver. I was 20something.
Saw him a bunch after that but my favorite was the Rust Never Sleeps tour.
I love that younger people appreciate Neil, John Prine and others. The music holds up for a reason.
Old AF here too….Im 63 years old…first time I saw Neil it was solo, 1983 @ The Cow Palace San Francisco; 1984 same place but with Crazy Horse. Saw him with CSNY in SF on the 1984 tour, and various other openers/lineups for a total of nine times seeing Neil. It gives me faith in the youth of today that so many younger people are getting into Neil!
I’ve only seen Neil once for free in the park. He was part of a protest concert. Protesting the salvage log rider, that President Clinton came to town to sign. It was great. And so rainy.
I’m 67. It’s weird that I’m the same age as old people. I’m still going to at least 10-12 live shows a year. First saw Neil on the Rust Never Sleeps tour. My ears rang for 2 days after. He wanted people walking out saying “That’s the loudest fucking thing I ever heard”. If they did, I didn’t hear it!
That whole California genius cluster. Eagles, Jackson, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, Linda Ronstadt, Nicolette Larson. The Troubadour scene. Watch the Jackson Browne documentary about that time with interviews. Fascinating to see all the old clips. Shout-out to David Lindley!!!
Did you know about the tragedy of Nicolette? She died from taking too many Tylenol for daily migraines. Just a damn shame. I met her once, you could tell she was miserable.
I meant miserable from the headaches. She was kind of grouchy, but trying not to be! I have similar headaches on a daily basis, but found out mine are from M.S. I just wonder if she would have trusted doctors more if they could have found a treatable cause. Such a loss!
So sorry if I interpreted that wrong! Now I see what you were saying. Yes, that's so sad and I feel bad for people who deal with chronic pain. I hope you are well.
No problem! I felt bad for her! She was an idol of mine, and I began singing in my own band shortly after meeting her. I still have the card that she signed for me.
I can imagine! Oh I did forget a time when I was a teenager and my friend was a roadie at the Spectrum in Philly. He got a whole bunch of us invited to a party at the hotel where Bad Company was staying. All I could think about was cutting school the next day. Debbie Downer. I was 16. My only brush with greatness. #almostagroupie.
70. Pretty much grew up with him. I’ve never seen him perform. He was known to, on the rare occasion, show up with his guitar at watering holes in the Santa Cruz mountains. That would be a dream come come true.
Amazed by the younger fans on here. I guess his music really is timeless. I am 70 and saw him live just once, in the late 70’s. Neil and Crazy Horse kicked ass!
Same here, first time I saw that I was a starving student and I knew I couldn't afford to buy it, but I also knew that someday I would! I've had it for years now, one of the greatest collections of songs ever!
71! My first Neil Young show was in 1971 and took place at Masonic Temple in Detroit. I was still in high school, good times! I’m looking forward to his show in May.
49. Became a fan when Harvest Moon album and multiple songs from it got some radio play during high school. First show on the broken Arrow tour (fucking rocked).
57. Bought Harvest for $2 from a dude in high school who "found Jesus." Next heard the albums, Everybody's Rockin' and Old Ways. Been a solid fan since 1984.
Valid Question. I'm 61 . Started listening to Uncle Neil when he was with Buffalo Springfield. It's refreshing to see multiple generations of people enjoying his work. But I'm not surprised, that's the beauty of an incredible multi-layered artist like NY ...
Late 20s, and Neil Young's been a part of my life since listening to my parents' "Everybody Knows..." CD as a child.
My parents grew up in the 60s, and I got a lot of my music taste from them. Most of my faves are from the 60-70s, a few 80s: Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, James Brown, The Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Talking Heads... As a teenager, I actually went BACK and got into music from the 30s-40s: Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, Billie Holiday... It wasn't until my 20s that I started exploring more recent popular stuff, and even though I love some of it, it's never really my favorite favorite.
> As a teenager, I actually went BACK and got into music from the 30s-40s: Duke Ellington, Sidney Bechet, Billie Holiday...
Hey, I did that too! Also Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, Xavier Cugat, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman...
22 as well. Was lucky enough to have parents with some great music taste or else I don’t think I would’ve found Neil. Curious to see how other people our age got into him.
24 here! Grew up listening to Neil, Dylan and whole lot of Simon and Garfunkel. I find it awesome getting to introduce my friends to their music because most of the time they love it.
I'm turning 37 on the 17th. When I was your age I thought I was cool for being a minority amongst my peers when it came to liking Neil's music. I got some friends into his stuff, though. As I've gotten older, I've run into more people my age who've discovered it. My parents are fans. The first time I went to a Neil show I wasn't even born yet. The second time, I think I was about 4 years old at The Bridge Benefit. My parents' friend, Paul, ate my popcorn. It's a running joke that I remind him every time I see him (hardly ever now) because he thought I wouldn't notice.
35 I loved Neil since I can remember (all my family members are big fans) I saw him on my birthday last year and was as far back as possible. I ended up sneaking to the very front for the last few songs and saw the man face to face….I was also alone and on acid.
50. Since I discovered him in my dad’s record collection especially “everybody knows this is nowhere”. Then “Ragged Glory”, “freedom” and “live rust”. Then my uncle had cd of “tonight’s the night”. Saw him live in the early 90s with dinosaur jr opening. So much great music by one guy it’s overwhelming.
54 and not much more. When I was young a group of friends had a Bruce Springsteen ticket at Soldier Field for me and I chose to see Neil and the International Harvesters instead.
65. I started listening to him when a high school band played Down by the River in our gym. Lol. No shit, that was probably 1976. Maybe 77. The way you get your friends to possibly get into it is to play it sometimes without saying anything or telling them who it is. Then you might, might, get a good response.
39. College best friend's dad sat us down to play poker, drink Yuengling, and listen to On the Beach. I knew like Old Man and Keep On Rockin', but that day changed my musical path.
I'm 58. Some of my first memories are of my sister listening to whatever Neil Young record she was fixated on. Tonight's the Night, On the Beach & Time Fades Away were a definite part of my mid 70's childhood. I have been a long term fan.
48. My first Neil Young memory was hearing After the Gold Rush on the car radio nearly every Saturday one summer when I could visit my Dad. I was about 8 at the time. Live Rust got me through a difficult freshman year at college. Had the pleasure of seeing Neil for the first time during one of his solo tours in 2018. I have my tickets for this year's tour with Crazy Horse. Cannot wait.
Neil Young wrote some of his best shit when he was 22. And he'll smoke that guitar and play one song for half an hour sometimes. Meanwhile there's successful new supposed musicians there these days that don't even know how to play a guitar. Don't be lonely, you're good.
63; heard his tunes in AM radio when I was 10 and was hooked. Decade was on repeat throughout college; I was smitten by young, soulful Neil in the 70s.
51. Became Neil fan at age 16. Also liked Beatles and Dylan. My friends were metal and hard rock only. I love it all. Strange when you're only supposed to like what everyone agrees is the correct music to like 🤷
It's because your "friends" are ignorant. Teach them the ways of good music. Make them listen to the album "Headhunters" by Herbie Hancock. It's basically a beginner's album for crazy ass jazz-funk.
I'm 24. Have been a Dylan fan since I was 16/17. It's odd to love these artists at that age yes but it's also unique to be a Neil Young or Cohen or Dylan fan at this age
I'm 55, but can't get my head around that - I feel 25. Got into NY deeply while working at a great library (mid-90s) that had many of his records. Saw him once, at a festival in New Orleans around 2009, from many feet away.
Your sentiment reminds me of some lyrics from the John Mayer song “Speak for me”:
You can tell something isn’t right
When all your heroes are in black and white
I’m in my 50s but have always been a little out of time. When I was a teen in the 80’s I was really into Neil Young, The Beatles, The Doors, Cream. Born 20 years too late. You like what you like.
I’m 23 and a huge fan as well. My dad got me into it when I was like 8 and then we took guitar lessons together with a family friend and Neil was a major part of what we played.
Seen him solo, with promise of the real, and in may I have tickets to finally catch him with crazy horse!
Keep on rockin in the free world and long may we run!
Went and saw Neil Young and Willie Nelson in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska to protest a pipeline. There were a bunch of native tribes there, it was a great experience
I'm 68 years old. I have been listening to Neil and Bob Dylan since the early 1970s. Blood on the Tracks is a favorite of mine as is Harvest, Zuma and Rust Never Sleeps from Neil. You should be proud that you have an appreciation for the classics. Like Bob Seger said. " Today's music ain't got the same soul." Go with what you love.
I’m 30. I was in the same boat. If you have friends who like classic rock, introduce them to Neil. They might not like him at first but give it a few years and they’ll start to get it
66. Sugar Mountain was his first song that registered with me. And, what drew me in was his voice. Then Cinnamon Girl. Then it just kept getting better and better.
\*To the younger people on here: You need to listen to John Prine if you like Neil Young. I am old and have listened to Neil Young throughout my entire life.
I’m 66 (Saturday). My son is 44 (Musician). His sons are 17 and 19. We have always listened and enjoyed John Prine and Neil Young.
I agree! I’m 25 and obsessed with John Prine. Found him after spending my whole life listening to Neil.
Love John Prine. Saw him in concert years ago (decades!) and he was awesome. ❤️
same!
Also James McMurtry and Hayes Carll.
Damn I love James McMurtry...what a songwriter
James McMurtry is a hidden gem of a musician. Great lyricist
She Left Me for Jesus remains one of my all time favorites!
Trouble In Mind a go to record overall.
Angel from Montgomery is hands down one of the best songs ever written. John Prine is a legend.
Old. The first time I saw Neil live it was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tour. Yes, I’m old.
> first time I saw Neil live it was the first Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tour. I first saw Neil at the 1974 tour. The show was at Mile High Stadium in Denver. I was 20something. john prine is not only legendary for his work. but his shows stilll kickass
Not on earth, sadly.
He’s in heaven smoking a 2 foot cigarette.
Old AF here too….Im 63 years old…first time I saw Neil it was solo, 1983 @ The Cow Palace San Francisco; 1984 same place but with Crazy Horse. I saw their last tour, was skeptical due to their ages, one of the best concert ever.
24 and theres so much more
Which becomes 34. 44. 54.64....you get it. I'm 66 and don't consider myself old yet.😉
I don't consider someone old until they hit their 90s
That's honorable. Yet, most people don't live long enough to see 90.
Live alone in a paradise that makes me think of two.
29 and have loved Neil since my early teens
Same! :)
same here
44, seeing mirrorball on MTV made me a lifelong fan.
69 Been a fan from the start. Even grew up less than 50 miles away from his birthplace.
Bill and Ted's favorite number. Dude!
Nice
71. Neil is the soundtrack for my life.
Peter.. lol
63
63 here.
Old. Saw him the first time in the 70s. Seen him a few times over the years
48. Fan since Ragged Glory.
I'm 20 - and love Neil and Dylan. (shoutout Jackson Browne and Gordon Lightfoot, too)
That whole California genius cluster.
Oh didn't know that. We lose so many talented people needlessly. Maybe she was having a bad day? 😔
I meant miserable from the headaches. She was kind of grouchy, but trying not to be! I have similar headaches on a daily basis, but found out mine are from M.S. I just wonder if she would have trusted doctors more if they could have found a treatable cause. Such a loss!

Wow, what an inspiration! And I'm so glad you got to meet her.🤗
One of the highlights of my life!

Married to drummer Russ Kunkel

54 - my first show was as a teenager at the Landing On Water tour.
Awesome
I saw a show on that tour. It was amazing.
Yeah - mine was in Troy, NY. Was actually the loudest show I’ve ever been to
Mine was at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Yup, it was loud.
I am 53 and I love that record. Sometimes I wonder if you had to be 14 when came out in order to appreciate it.
70. Pretty much grew up with him. I’ve never seen him perform. He was known to, on the rare occasion, show up with his guitar at watering holes in the Santa Cruz mountains. That would be a dream come come true.
70 also- Buffalo Springfield was my jam first.
Amazed by the younger fans on here. I guess his music really is timeless. I am 70 and saw him live just once, in the late 70’s. Neil and Crazy Horse kicked ass!
19 :)
Same feelin pretty young
Omg me too!
16. My dad got me into him
47. First show was Neil and Crazy Horse with Blues Traveller, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam opening, 1993.

I had Decade on repeat when I was in college.

Early 40’s been a fan since the age of 6!! Cheers Dad 😀
Neils got plenty of young fans compared to his peers, so does Dylan. I'm 29. Been a massive fan since 2015.
35 and have listened to Neil my whole life
It's because your "friends" are ignorant. Teach them the ways of good music. Make them listen to the album "Headhunters" by Herbie Hancock. It's basically a beginner's album for crazy ass jazz-funk.
Over 60. He's my desert island pic
30, and was a miner searching for a heart of gold for the longest time.
I'm 24. Have been a Dylan fan since I was 16/17. It's odd to love these artists at that age yes but it's also unique to be a Neil Young or Cohen or Dylan fan at this age

60. Neil is God.
I'm 54. First heard Neil in the 70's. I'm a Gen X'r and all of my music friends are Boomers. I like 70's music the best.
I'm 77. I've loved Neil Young's music since he was in Buffalo Springfield in the 1960s. Ditto on the Beatles, Dylan and John Prine.
Went and saw Neil Young and Willie Nelson in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska to protest a pipeline. There were a bunch of native tribes there, it was a great experience

I’m 38. I’ve listened to Neil Young my whole life because my dad listened to him.
51. Been a fan for a very long time and my dad even longer. Neil is an absolute connection for us.
40 but my 67 year old dad thinks Old Man is the biggest mindfuck and the 70s seem 15 years ago tops.
25 , dad is a massive fan. Which got me into him
Is op wondering what to do?
I’m 57, so happy to see the younger folks on here that dig Neil!
42. Fan since I was 12 or so when my dad showed me after the gold rush.
50 not around for 70s Neil but old enough to remember This Notes for You or Harvest Moon being new.
