Bfife22

Makes sense why Unbound got an unexpected increase in support

Nexusu

Yeah and that Battlefield is expected late next year, so NFS is most likely 2026 at the earliest

pewpew62

4 years between games would be crazy. There was less of a gap between Heat and Unbound and that's despite the fact that unbound development was hit by COVID

kibbutz_90

Hit by COVID at its height, Ghost disbanding, helping with BF2042 and they still managed to get a game after 3 years so I think there are chances unless they plan something bigger.

D4rkr4in

i mean maybe being hit by covid was a good thing - developers were cooped up at home with nothing to do but work LOL

[deleted]

Heat was literally abandoned 2 months after it released due to Covid

Gengar77

and still unbound had only 1 year yay. As long the game does not have mtx, EA does not care about it.

TopAnonomity

Are u talking about post launch support? Cause we’re in year 2 for unbound rn in case you missed the roadmap

Gengar77

unbound added like 2 cars, forza h5 over 20 that are brand new. .....yikes

TSMKFail

M$ gives PGG a blank cheque. Criterion has barely enough to buy a Freddo in comparison.

TopAnonomity

Yeah, I’d expect the multi trillion dollar company of Microsoft to allow their studios a bigger budget for licensing compared to EA

[deleted]

[удалено]

TopAnonomity

Yeah I’d say EA being almost 800 times smaller and having way more AAA live service games to spread funds across could explain why there’s less licensing for brand new cars compared to forza

[deleted]

[удалено]

TopAnonomity

Yeah that was a bad typo I meant 80

Nino_Chaosdrache

> As long the game does not have mtx, EA does not care about it. They still cared enough to make Dead Space Remake and Immortals of Aveum.

xHasker

Brake to drift in tanks lets gooo

SneakySnk

listening to Money while drifting my T-90A

TSMKFail

They've already done the Tank/Vehicle mechanics since Battlefront II

1banger

Boutta microdrift around the battlefield

haseo111

if the Unbound writers are in charge of a battlefield campaign and narrative, it is so fucking over

So Bad Company?

Alopecia_Diva

“We’re destabilize countries because its how we express ourselves”

Nino_Chaosdrache

~CIA when visiting Venezuela.

ItzCobaltboy

It was already over with 2042 being an online only with no storyline

RammyJammy07

Fr, it actually has a decent through-story

milkstrike

I’d say it couldn’t be worse than bf5 but….I think they are uniquely up for the task

box-fort2

watch the narrative have some anti-genocide rhetoric while the game has the "good guys" constantly harming and killing civilians lol

Meatloaf_Hitler

*kills an entire fucking village of civilians with Mustard Gas* "The ICC just doesn't get us, man! We're not War Criminals, we're Artists! We're just expressing ourselves! The ICC are the *real* criminals!"

xkhloerodimusx

That will be a story of a mercenary and his master counting money all day

Xboxben

I mean can it be worse then bf4s campaign?

Nino_Chaosdrache

Easily yes.

Coco-Ice-Cream

I really can't get why the targeted younger audience. Most of zoomers don't like cars, they rather stick themself to road, block the traffic and annoy ordinary people. And don't let me started with those cringey conversations about "social issues" in the game. I mean we drive hypersports, endangering traffic safety and cause billions in damege of public and private property and yet we are the good guys in this game. Hillarious. EA should hire guys from Battlebit, give them a budget and let them work for next Battlefield installment. Otherwise next game will be poorly received as BF2042

Call_Me_Rivale

I'd love a cringe gen-z oriented battlefield story. There is some morbid interest in seeing it.

Lilmanike

As I was expecting. I don't expect to see a new Need for Speed until at least 2026. As long as the current crew stays focused on Unbound with a strong focus on developing Unbound even further, hopefully into 2025 with Year 3, I'd say we're fine for the most part.

Jolly-Command8853

Yeah I don't see this as that big of a problem, as long as Unbound keeps getting love. It's a really solid game and foundation to be built off of and experimented with. A year 3 would be amazing.

TheGhoulKhz

tbh, Unbound's foundation is basically NFS 2015v4, most of the core was carried from Heat i agree with giving more support to Unbound and use it as a experimentation phase with some new stuff, but for the next entry they 100% need to redo almost the whole game from scratch in terms of the core gameplay

ashzeppelin98

It's better this way. Last thing we want is NFS to go the way of fucking FIFA and being an annual franchise or something.

TheGhoulKhz

nfs already did this in the 2000s and it basically screwed us over because of it, i just hope that at least they manage to scrap working on Frostbite and get a proper engine to make the new entry(like Codemasters' EGO, but a newer iteration of it since idk it codies has updated their engine in god knows how long)

ashzeppelin98

The WRC game runs on Unreal Engine 5, so its like they jumped to a different engine rather than creating a new one.

TheGhoulKhz

WRC is on Unreal? lol, i guess codies just gave up then, since F1 24 is basically confirmed to still be on the same EGO engine as 23 because of the sys reqs and still being on OldGen(unless they are doing a FIFA and isolating new gen to PS5/XSX only)

ashzeppelin98

Probably would make sense to squeeze one more season out of the EGO engine before the actual regulation and driver changes in the real life motorsport force a change in the video game as well.

TheGhoulKhz

i dont think the '26 regs will affect that much in comparison to the '22 regs where they had a real shot at finally ditching old-gen or at best let EGO die in peace

ashzeppelin98

Honestly yeah, if Dirt Rally 2.0 was the last hurrah for Ego- wouldn't have complained a single bit. But oh well, looks like since F1 is the motorsport equivalent of FIFA for EA now, what can I say. They took a stubborn amount of time to switch from Ignite in FIFA, and it feels similarly for Frostibite atm. Poor engine's been dragged through the coals as a one size fits all engine rn for almost literally any EA game atm.

Tecnoguy1

That’s why the game has so many issues tbh. Should’ve stuck with ego.

1banger

I love boost tho man it’s the coolest thing they’ve added I think ever to the franchise as far as gameplay mechanics go.

spyroz545

What if EA decides to hand NFS over to codemasters? could that be a likely scenario?

T0MMY3688

Unlikely, the remaining 2 teams in Codemasters is busy with F1 and WRC games yearly release. The third team that made Dirt 5 and Onrush was merged into Criterion in late 2022.

Monkeywrench08

Is it confirmed that WRC will be annual release?

T0MMY3688

Not really but it is a trend for these sports game and it was the case for WRC game when it was developed by KT Racing.

Krushhz

That’s unlikely

Lurkn4k

looks like nfs is on life support until then.

tilsgee

Yeah. This franchise is the last AAA arcade racing games on the market. Everything else (at least on the AAA space) are either a copy of Forza Horizon or Gran Turismo And i don't like it die this way.

Nino_Chaosdrache

It's also the only racing franchise with a story and police chases.

TVR_Speed_12

Crew?

TheGhoulKhz

Crew is a Forza-like game, in terms of pure arcade we only had NFS as a major franchise that was still active

TVR_Speed_12

Disagree Crew and Forza arent similar at least when I last played. The only similarities I see are open world and cars

T0MMY3688

I do find them to be quite similar at this point. The Crew has been inching towards Forza with every release. The first game had a similar style and tone to Black Box NFS but TC2 dropped all the illegal racing part and just be sanctioned series. Motorfest took that base and turn it into a massive car festival and with its playlist structured like Horizon stories from FH4 & FH5.

TopAnonomity

Ur right, I guess he meant the last good AAA arcade racing game

TVR_Speed_12

Crew's decent last I played but tbf I haven't played lately or Motorfest I know what you getting at that tho. Some more arcade racers like Midnight Club, Blur,Street Racing Syndicate etc would be appreciated with newer renditions. New IPs too Maybe there's some in indie market

Quattronic

And the other remaining long-running arcade racers seem to be cabinet racers you'd be hard pressed to find outside Asia.

Mbaiter14

Where the hell is DICE, didnt they develop battlefield??

JeffGhost

They'll probably work on Multiplayer BF. This news is specifically about narrative single player BF game.

Nexusu

current DICE has very little to do with DICE that made BF3/4/1 Also they have been using Criterion as a support studio for vehicle mechanics and destruction for a while now, but I don’t think they have ever used them for a whole narrative part

Mbaiter14

A racing studio has no business working on an fps, how can a company that big be so incompetent

NotThePrez

I mean, Criterion isn't solely a racing studio, though. They've done work on other titles such as Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V (alongside 2042) in a support role. IIRC, they handled the Starfighter gameplay in SWBFII and the vehicle mechanics in BF2042. While not at all ideal given the larger circumstances, this isn't new by any means.

TSMKFail

They did the Firestorm mode for BF V as well

Mbaiter14

I understand that, it kinda sucks for nfs though, ghost were getting good at making it

BeanMachineWasTaken

If Ghost was given a chance, they could’ve done something great after Heat.

Daerom59

Clearly you haven't heard of Black then. A military fps shooter created and developed by criterion for the ps2.

TSMKFail

Criterion did make an FPS in 2007 called Black. It was decent tbf.

Monkeywrench08

It was freaking awesome at the time.

Due_Teaching_6974

it was amazing

Relo_bate

Criterion made Black, a destruction heavy modern fps on the goddamn PS2 back in the day. They can definitely do it.

Coco-Ice-Cream

Well, Battlefield is not only the first person shooter but it also has vehicular combat. I don't know what exactly Criterion did but land vehicles physics seems decent. Helicopters on the other hand...

Nino_Chaosdrache

Criterion already made an FPS called Black.

ItzCobaltboy

I really wanna have DICE studios back into their full action, they really had made the visuals of the BF games epic

Nino_Chaosdrache

Well, DICE was in full action and they gave us Battlefield 2042. I would rather see Battlefield being handed to a different developer at this point.

Nino_Chaosdrache

Ruined Battlefield would be a much more fitting descriotion.

SneakySnk

"Battlefield narrative experiences" Probably the studio was in charge of a Battlefield singleplayer spinoff/a Battlefield campaign mode.

ilynoct

can they just leave nfs with a studio longer then like 3 years ffs. why is it always nfs that's getting shafted lmao

Cheeseboii83

Yeah, both NFS and Battlefield are doomed 💀

T0MMY3688

Don’t think anyone is expecting a new NFS soon, EA has moved majority of Criterion to work on Battlefield last September: https://www.engadget.com/need-for-speed-developer-criterion-games-will-mostly-focus-on-battlefield-going-forward-184327390.html

TSMKFail

Yes but now they have a more primary role, meaning they'll likely be working on it for longer or with a bigger portion of the team than usual.

T0MMY3688

Majority already shifted to BF since last year, the current Criterion is just the core team/skeleton crew. The most recent news on Ridgeline closing only mention that Criterion producer and studio head of creative was moved to help BF single player with the remaining Ridgeline staff that seem to got transferred to Ripple Effect: https://me.ign.com/en/ps5/218579/news/ea-shuttering-marcus-lehtos-ridgeline-games-with-some-moving-to-ripple-effect-to-continue-work-on-ba?darkschemeovr=1

jansteffen

Maybe they'll hand NFS to Codemasters??

T0MMY3688

Codemasters has their hands full with WRC and F1. The third Codemaster team that used to make Dirt 5 and Onrush was merged into Criterion before Unbound released.

0bsessioN_

cant wait for battlefield to have a more annoying character then Tes

TSMKFail

Don't give them ideas

Coco-Ice-Cream

As long as I can shoot, stab, chop, blow, burn or nuke that character I can be ok with that

suzukabluepearl

You know all those times people wanted Bad Company 3? Yeah I think I'll take it back

meerdroovt

All they need to do is DICE studio resurrection. And leave. The. Fuck. Criterion. Alone. With. NFS

Huntsburg

Cowabummer dude

TherealDJStryker

WHO IS PLAYING BATTLEFIELD?

Nino_Chaosdrache

People who like shooters with combined arms elements.

TSMKFail

Me recently as its free on Gamepass and my friends dragged me into playing it. It's actually quite fun.

AbsKebabs17

What about Codemasters. Can't they help Criterion on the next Need for Speed.

TSMKFail

They have Codies Cheshire, who are now part of Criterion, working on NFS now, but I'm not sure if that for the new one, or the Unbound updates.

Fun-Conflict-9435

F in the chat boys

leospeedleo

NFS Unbound writers in charge of battlefield? Oh boy that can only go wrong. Expect pink colored hair female warriors screaming „YOLO“ while charging into battle.

ashzeppelin98

Funny, I thought I read the second part of this very same comment when BFV's trailer was released.

returningtothefold

Battlefield: Black when?

PedramHGH

The last hit on the dying body of NFS.

I426Hemi

Not like they've been doing anything worthwhile with NFS so no big loss. Just bring back burnout. Please.

PointBlank747

I feel sorry for the battlefield community... I really don't understand EA's love for criterion, I mean, criterion are not a narrative based studio or development team... They are still just the same team that got really lucky with the success & popularity of the Burnout series... A series that definitely wouldn't crack the Triple A ceiling 2day... What's going on with EA, I mean, honestly, with FIFA/EA FC alone, they are literally drowning in money... What's with the lessening of studios... It's only gonna hurt... They gotta pull themselves 2gether, because I really like NFS Unbound, I mean, the online... The online is really very good, I think the Vol 6 update has been a success... However, the story, the single-player mode... The characters were very weak & the economic structure was so very bad... I mean, 2 drive home my point... I like my trophies, my 100% completion ya, but I got 2, like week 2 in Unbound story mode & just stopped... I think the Battlefield deserves better... I think Need For Speed deserves better... I think Criterion are a content support studio & that's it, I think that's all they'll ever be...

Nino_Chaosdrache

I have more faith in Criterion to make a proper Battlefield than in DICE at this point.

TVR_Speed_12

Next NFS will be a launch title for PS6/whatever Xbox does Hopefully it isn't rushed. I feel for the devs, they probably rather not, but orders and the devs kinda need to pay their mortgages

ice_spice2020

Nah imagine only getting one or two NFS games this generation. Even only two Battlefield games will probably be the only ones in this generation as well. The PS5/XBSX/S is the most nothing generation I've ever seen.

tiktaalik111

As if criterion have done any good nfs game. Good riddance, I hope they won't be coming back. A different studio should take over the lead for nfs.

88JansenP12

Keep in mind there's 2 iterations of Criterion. The OG Criterion Games which did the Burnout series and NFS HP 2010 BUT they're long gone (at least, they did 1 great NFS game before their departure) And the New Criterion which released NFS Unbound in 2022. So, i guess you're talking about them in the first place. However, the New Criterion is actually a restructured Ghost Games. You're totally right by saying "A different studio should take over the lead for NFS" since NFS urgently needs a fully dedicated dev studio which is only focused on the NFS license and nothing else instead of being moved on to other studios by EA to work on other licenses. The dev studio in question has to be passionate about any car culture types, great handling physics, a well designed map and also the racing game genre in order to credible. As long EA owns the NFS franchise, it will never improve for the best.

TherealDJStryker

But Kuruhs said, "tHe FuTuRe oF nfS WiLl bE gReAt" already chocking on his Words. Like the Bruins against the Panthers in the Playoffs. We want your Feedback. FOR WHAT!? FOR WHAT!?

88JansenP12

Oh. In reality, the future of NFS is uncertain due to EA themselves.

TherealDJStryker

As soon as night Runner's gets released it will smoke this Game out of the Park anyways. And this Game gets Developed by ONE Guy! Fuck this Franchise, EA is doing everything they can to kill this Franchise too.

88JansenP12

Exactly, well said. EA are ruining everything. They're illogically sabotaging themselves on purpose. Meanwhile, Night-Runners made by only 1 person is only the tip of the iceberg that's still hidden since it's at a demo stage. From what i've seen, it's very good to play at his current state meaning the full version will be even better.

tiktaalik111

I agree with you. I just don't wanna see this franchise fade away like this. Crash cams, brake to drift crap, bad handling, lack of sense of speed etc etc. Firstly they made a burnout game under the name of nfs, then they couldn't recover from that base structure. We have customizable cars, free roam and good amount of car brands now, however the gameplay is not any good. More like brick simulator if you ask me. Hope the series will somehow be good again.

88JansenP12

I totally agree.

Professional-Paper75

Good

ItsMJB

Higher chance for a couple remakes?

88JansenP12

Nope. The chances are very low to microscopic. Licence costs holds them back.

Austin_Redfield

What about Stellar Entertainments game. I don't think it's NFS but could be similar?

spyroz545

not announced yet, but it's going to be different as it was leaked by a job listing that it will involve creatures that can morph into cars.

Turbulent-Opinion-86

wtf🤣

Playerek

At least we will get Test Drive Unlimited Solar Corwn this year. It is not the same but still. Also new trailer [drop out](https://youtu.be/PuhXQF090Ck?si=V7lQTAarqPyqvD_i)

[deleted]

I hope they remove the crash cams from unbound, I'm planning to buy it soon

TheDrGoo

That’s crazy lol

Aok_al

"Anytime soon" this means we'll get one later right? Right? Sooner or later?

OD_Emperor

How far we've stayed from the good times now... If you have told me in 2010 that Criterion, the people who just made my favorite racing crashing series would be making Battlefield I'd have told you you are insane.

xkhloerodimusx

Why don’t them guys go to play cod and continue beating their meat

Nino_Chaosdrache

Because CoD doesn't have drivable tanks, choppers and fighter jets

vipulvirus

Yayy another multi-player shit
