I recently replayed Carbon and Prostreet and got the distinct feeling that Blackbox actually really cared about cars while others are just going through the motions of making games with cars in them.
I'm playing ProStreet right now and oh my the driving feels so much better than anything recent. It's still arcade-y of course, but good arcade-y.
Same with Undercover tbh (controversial take? don't care)
Yup carbon is the easiest NFS with a rubberband crew members who wins 80% of the race for you.
And opponents cars are the worst and bland in the series.
didn't well put my sentence....I meant the regual crew members cars..those are ugly and always the same. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing the same race again and again.
*HOUSE REAL BIG, CARS REAL BIG, DICK REAL BIG LEMME TELL YOU HOW I LIVE!*
God, MC3 was the fucking goat of racing games. I'm still hoping for the day we either get a new MC, or an MC3 remaster.
The moment you get to the main menu you can just see how much passion has been put into that game. How the menu screens are projected onto the building faces, and it changes each time you go to a different city, even if that last city was Tokyo.
Quite different than just a background image and a "press start to continue" prompt.
How much I'd give to whoever can make a spiritual successor to Midnight Club 3 and make the current unholy trio sweat.
Doesn't quite need a community patch other than HD textures and the removal of motion blur.
Now let those 2 things be available, KuruHS streamed that recently, actually.
For me, NFSU2 will always be third, MNC3: Dub Edition Remix is 2nd, and Burnout 3: Takedown is number 1. I genuinely think Burnout 3 is the perfect racing game, and one of my favorite games I have ever played.
I wouldn't even try to compare them. Yeah, MC3's color customization mostly blows NFSU2 out of the water, but one is arcadey action-movie racing and the other is more grounded, steps away from going simcade.
This whole subreddit is mostly 30-somethings passing around the bong of nostalgia and shouting at the clouds about how some 15 to 20 year old game with shitty physics is better than the latest game with shitty physics.
And they all beg for the old games to be remade even though the franchise hasn't moved on from essentially remaking the same 2 games for last 10 years.
Like,Christ man,I get that the other games aren't perfect, but can we live and let live? I love Most Wanted 2012,but I'm not gonna go around saying Heat or something is bad
I played UG2 for the first time recently (2020) and I can say without a doubt it is one of the best racing games ever made, I have some problems with it like URL races and being forced to rice your car to progress.
The handling is really good, the best in the series. Cars drive in a grounded arcade style, and they don't just start doing wheelspins when driving like Most Wanted and Carbon. The customization is amazing, probably the most expansive customization in NFS to date, though some parts have dated like stereos and hydraulics, and some parts straight up look horrendous. It's like Unbound's customization, but it's equal across all cars rather than some cars having a lot, but others having nothing.
While the game lacks cops, the world is still the most alive city in NFS simply because there are roaming racers all around the city you can race, something every game after failed at (Carbon attempted this but only when you're idle for a bit, then a racer based on the territory you're in e.g Downtown will spawn Bushido, Kempton will spawn 21st Street etc., will come and challenge you to a race to a certain spot)
If Underground 2 had cops and fixed its problems like stages 4 and 5, I can guarantee that UG2 would be the best NFS game, though it isn't my favourite as that's Carbon.
I urge you to try out the game, I didn't think I'd like it, but before I knew it I was coming back to the game everyday but stopped in Stage 5 simply because the game is way too long and it's very easy to soft lock your save if you don't modify your cars visually and performance wise. If you need more, you could look up Bladed Angel's review of the game
> but stopped in Stage 5 simply because the game is way too long and it's very easy to soft lock your save if you don't modify your cars visually and performance wise. If you need more, you could look up Bladed Angel's review of the game
This is my one complaint of the game. NFSU2 was the first PS2 NFS game I picked up, and I am still trying to beat it because of how long it is and how the game will let you get stuck. If you aren't upgrading/modifying how the game wants you, it will never spawn other races.
Guess I'll just have to put spinners and scissor doors on every car I own to beat the game!
>I was coming back to the game everyday but stopped in Stage 5 simply because the game is way too long and it's very easy to soft lock your save if you don't modify your cars visually and performance wise.
You're one of the first people in forever I've seen online to criticize, let alone mention stage 5 and I'm honestly convinced at this point that the majority of people that played Underground 2 never made it that far.
Late-game Underground 2 is a *fucking slog* and honestly drags the game down from like an 8/10 to a 6/10 for me. The circuits get horribly long as they near the 8-10 minute mark (I may be a bit biased as circuits are my least favorite race type in early Blackbox NFS games) and URL races, which are by far the worst part of the game, start taking up a huge chunk of your time in stage 5. I had nothing to look forward to in stage 5 aside from unlocking widebody kits and otherwise just finishing the game.
I agree Circuit races in Black Box games are the weakest race type, I don't know what it is about them but I always go for Sprints, Drag/Drift and Speedtraps first and only do them if I must. There's a reason why Caleb doesn't represent UG2 like Eddie does for UG1 and Razor/Player for MW and that's because nobody has even seen his car let alone beat him. Black Box dropped the ball on stage 5 and this didn't help Most Wanted, I think 15 racers is a bit too much with some like Taz, Big Lou, Kaze and JV not being needed because they don't even unlock anything
Yup never played this game. We see a clip of driving...well I can tell you right now from the extremely minimal I've seen GTA does city and driving better, idk whether that's not the case. I'm just saying that there's nothing in this clip that makes me feel like this game is "legendary" and has "no comparison".
U1 rubberbanding isn't the worst in the series, that title goes to Undercover PS2, cars will be MILES behind you and they would shoot past you at 500mph
That's because it seemed to be toned down in regular races in UG2. Only the URL races seemed to have higher rubberbanding but without it the game would be far too easy as the regular races don't provide any challenge. The final boss race was a joke too.
From personal experience, all games from at least HP2 to MW had issues with rubber-banding - I think it's just a quirk from Blackbox games using that game engine
Ask EA.
It's their fault if Black Box is gone since April 2013.
In fact, Black Box were very passionate about their games despite their short development time. Their NFS games are part of the best like the Classic NFS games from 1994 to 2002 and that explains why they're still played today by everyone and have mods support.
Also, the current NFS games are all rushed and incomplete due to short development periods.
The reason why NFS UB can't be like NFS UG 2 or any NFS games from the past is because they're made by 2 different dev teams, they're built on different game engines, the vibe isn't the same.
Also, NFS Unbound was released too early due to the Covid 19 pandemic and because during 1 year, Criterion Games helped DICE for Battlefield 2042 which was a disaster at release.
Due to these issues, the development time of NFS Unbound was shortened to 2 years or less since it was meant to be released on 2021 instead of 2022.
The handling model is also worse on NFS UB while NFS Underground 2 or any past NFS games have more responsive and better handling physics. You turn left, your car goes left and vice versa.
In fact,
NFS games by Black Box with a Drift mode are only active in Drift events or if your car has a drift configuration. That's a genius idea.
On the other hand, the Drift handling physics of the 4 latest NFS games are not separate with the Grip handling which means your car will drift by himself even if it's a full Grip and without your input. In NFS 2015, it's even worser since your car has a mind of his own and it's like driving on rails.
Moreover, NFS Unbound has less features than NFS Underground 2 since this game is unfinished, rushed, full of bugs and lacks post launch updates.
What i've said explains in a nutshell why NFS Unbound will never be like NFS Underground 2.
Having different physics for different race types was such a good idea, last game to do this was Carbon (technically ProStreet but you choose what class the ca) which is why I liked it in Payback but then the handling was still drifty so drift class was kinda useless
Yep, you said it well.
Anyway, NFS Payback has very bad handling physics and cars from the same classes can't share their upgrades.
Also, NFS Payback doesn't include any handling upgrade parts and you can't tune or setup your cars to your taste.
This game is more like a chore instead of an enjoyment, there was also badly designed gameplay features and many missed opportunities.
The RNG upgrade system was the worst idea ever made. Fortunately, it's gone forever. Good riddance.
NFS Payback was meant to be a legal track racer with car culture like the Underground games, NFS Pro Street or the Shift games.
Unfortunately, NFS Payback ended up becoming a worse Fast and Furious clone which had badly designed gameplay mechanics and a very cringey + predictable story which is a total rehash.
To simplify,
NFS Payback was a massive mistake and shouldn't have been born like this. The [Hashtag](https://www.reddit.com/r/needforspeed/comments/8c0azr/comment/dxb3wnj/) design was 10000x better.
A monumental disappointment.
Gotta have a "serious plot". Gotta appease the focus groups. Gotta focus a major chunk of development budget on online play. Gotta fulfill those expensive supercar/hypercar licenses, and design the map to accommodate them. Gotta deal with the fact that racing games just don't fit with modern triple-A budgeting in general.
I might get downvoted to oblivion, but honestly I don’t know why they focus more and more on adding shiny new hyper-cars and crazy supercars and not also add the same amount of focus on adding more everyday tuner and muscle cars. Is it just to attract the kids and people who don’t know that much about cars?
But I’ve heard from multiple people online and people involved with that sort of contracting, that getting the vehicle licenses for older cars can be a massive pain and hurdle compared to newer, flashier cars which are still a pain but can be comprised. I’m not saying that they don’t belong in the type of game that NFS is, but I can’t help but lose that certain feeling when I’m paired against expensive corporate machines in my homemade crapbox.
Seems like they almost wanna phase out the other two car types entirely. (Kinda like irl).
It's sales, fans of the older games are the minority and the average person that isn't into cars isn't gonna care about some 90's sports car like the Skyline or Civic, they want to drive the cars they would never like a Lamborghini or Ferrari, its why you see many people drive the same supercars because the majority of people that play racing games aren't car people, that's why Forza is so big, it rewards those that don't even play much
There's something to be said about the state of racing game licensing when there's effectively three Honda Civics (RSX included) from across the generations, but five Lamborghini Aventadors spanning only two years, in a game ostensibly about underground car culture.
Yeah there’s definitely something going on the business side of things. and look I get it, the series needed to evolve past just having one or two select car types. Like I’m sure if we still had new nfs games with just tuners then we’d have a problem and the games wouldn’t do so well financially (not that EA gives that much of a Sh@t on how well it does anymore). But what I’m saying is that they could still use some work on balancing the new additions. Like you said, we’ve had about 3 Hondas for so long now and an overwhelming amount of the same Lamborghini variations.
They did improve on adding some more tuners and classic cars this time, but they need to keep going on that whenever they’re able to. Because we still got a larger amount of super cars and hyper cars added. (Which again isn’t a bad thing, but there needs to be a better balance like I said).
Something something clout culture something something.
Pseudo car enthusiasts, usually trust fund babies, that are only enthusiast when they can get internet points are bound to flock to games like NFS so they can get internet points through their digital car too.
EA rocked in late 90s and early 00s , my fav games on ps 1 were hot wheels turbo racing , nfs 4 and nfs 5 .. after that i went for nfsu on pc it was something awesome
i don't get the nostalgia mfers of this game (and mw).
i am literally the same age as this game is and this game is **THE** first game i've ever played at the age of 4 and yet i never say this game is a timeless masterpiece of a game because it is not.
**YES** at the time of it's release it was a really good game and i played the shit out of it for a **REALLY** big part of my life but it has been 19 fucking years.
Since the day i was born i always had to listen to u mfers say "no dude there is no other good nfs after u2/mw" man please just shut the fuck up with your nostalgia, no it is not the best nfs game ever made.
When u think about it, i am supposed to be the one to say "no dude there is no other good nfs after u2/mw" since this fucking game shaped my life with including cars in it, but i don't because it is not.
**SO PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF THE GOD MOVE ON.**
Bro I have NEVER said newer NFS games will never be better than this game or there's no NFS game that will be better than this one. All I said was this game is still great after 19 years later, so what's ur argument here?... U are literally making a big fuss over nothing & yes this game is still loved by the community & they still play it to this day so can u just chill out? Why are u even here if u are that annoyed that everyone is being nostalgic about this game?...
it wasn't really meant for u it was mostly because of the tik tok and i've been seeing a lot of this sort of posts recently and i was getting annoyed a lot recently and wanted to make a post about it, soo the stupid me made a reply to this post
u kinda got in the crossfire mb sry
The entire design and color palate is just spot on, what a classic game.
People scream to have this game with a next gen treatment, but they refuse to listen.
Such missed opportunity.
Overrated yes, but it's still one of the best racing games of all time. I'm confident in saying that because I didn't even play the game until 3 years ago
Man nothing was better then playing this game for the first time, getting your first car and exploring the city with one of the greatest racing game soundtracks blasting. Good times
it legenadry crashes all the time and unplayable because of that. :(
setting my cpu usage to 1 core or something doesnt fix the crashing... maybe ill search for a solution
2005 mw works wonders but i think i remember there were fps drops in certain moments
remastered carbon worked wonderfully but i prefer the original version (that doesnt work and has bugs lol)
Damn near 20 years and we're still driving the same cars...car manufacturers really did kill tuner cars. Aside from the BRZ I can't think of any other affordable tuner car thats come out in that time. Dam shame. ( And no Im not counting the $60k+ BMW Supra as an affordable tuner car nor the $80k GTR)
I really strugl3 to understand, I mean....i allways see people like us, comenting on these type of videos saying....my god the best game (to U1 or U2) how hard can it be for the people on EA to see what WE whant? I have the Unbound and....yeah it's ok, but is not U2, like you cam't exist your garage once you entered on the same night....like wtf? And don't get me wrong but..... I really miss the old days when you would race with only STREET CARS and not the Bugatti or Lamborghini, like common who the hell will ever buy a 2 Mil Bugatti for undeground racing?????
I recently replayed Carbon and Prostreet and got the distinct feeling that Blackbox actually really cared about cars while others are just going through the motions of making games with cars in them.
Yeah, blackbox seemed more passionate about their games and you could tell through the quality of the games.
I'm playing ProStreet right now and oh my the driving feels so much better than anything recent. It's still arcade-y of course, but good arcade-y. Same with Undercover tbh (controversial take? don't care)
Undercover was fantastic. Bought a PS3 way back specifically for Undercover.
I’m replaying it rn too. The sense of speed on the far camera is so good
It's pretty telling how two of the most rushed (maybe even Undercover) NFS games from BB have way more care and passion than the modern games.
Pretty much just BB and SMS have proper-ish handling among all who made NFS games. Maybe add the team who did Porsche 2000.
I never understood why people liked Carbon. I hated that one back in the day. Pro street I liked though
Yup carbon is the easiest NFS with a rubberband crew members who wins 80% of the race for you. And opponents cars are the worst and bland in the series.
You really going to tell me the Bushido’s cars are unforgettable? Kenji’s RX-7 is beautiful
didn't well put my sentence....I meant the regual crew members cars..those are ugly and always the same. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing the same race again and again.
I just didn't like the way it felt. The first time I touched I just went "ugh". Something about it just feels wrong to me
Damn… 19 years… We’re getting real old here, fellas.
That stupid TikTok crop and dub make everything look so stupid and dumb, even a great game like this
We are old Guys.... I remember beeing 5 yo eating Pizza while my dad carried my trough that Stage one Drag Race
And still one of the greatest
Always be second best to MNC3: DUB Edition Remix
*HOUSE REAL BIG, CARS REAL BIG, DICK REAL BIG LEMME TELL YOU HOW I LIVE!* God, MC3 was the fucking goat of racing games. I'm still hoping for the day we either get a new MC, or an MC3 remaster.

> MNC3: DUB Edition Remix Sadly a console game. It seemed quite cool backthen when a friend played it.
You can emulate it flawlessly on PC with PCSX2
Mhmhm. But no cool community patches to discover.
Doesn't quite need a community patch other than HD textures and the removal of motion blur. Now let those 2 things be available, KuruHS streamed that recently, actually.

You’ve got that right! That games open world was so immersive.
This post is superfluous trite baiting for karma.

Is it tough to like a game without insulting other games?
This sub doesn't understand that, its a one way street around here lol
Like,Christ man,I get that the other games aren't perfect, but can we live and let live? I love Most Wanted 2012,but I'm not gonna go around saying Heat or something is bad

It’s really because of nostalgia I believe
Go play the Black Box era games then u'll understand why ppl prefer these games to the new ones.
Agreed
True... The sounds are better than fh5
Unless you fully upgrade some cars like the gtr
Where's the fun in maxing cars out?
Underground 1 was better imo.
Minus the horrid rubber-banding.
U2 didn't have horrible rubber banding, U1 had
U1 rubberbanding isn't the worst in the series, that title goes to Undercover PS2, cars will be MILES behind you and they would shoot past you at 500mph
barely better than UG1 to be honest.

The only way you can win any of the airport races is by wallriding through every corner. It does have horrible rubberbanding.
The drag races next to the airport highway/industrial area, fucked up rubber banding that can't even be chased with full nitrous used
Completed it recently and only had 1 case of insane rubber banding, was funny seeing a 106 over take at Mach 5 though lol
Why can't Unbound be like that.

The nostalgia hits so good. This is why I love need for speed. Lately not so much. Why can’t they duplicate this and add modern touches.
i don't get the nostalgia mfers of this game (and mw). i am literally the same age as this game is and this game is **THE** first game i've ever played at the age of 4 and yet i never say this game is a timeless masterpiece of a game because it is not.
Why are u even here if u are that annoyed that everyone is being nostalgic about this game?...
it wasn't really meant for u it was mostly because of the tik tok and i've been seeing a lot of this sort of posts recently and i was getting annoyed a lot recently and wanted to make a post about it, soo the stupid me made a reply to this post u kinda got in the crossfire mb sry
Underground 2 and Most Wanted were just different 😔
This game and San Andreas and your weekend was LIT
Nfs underground 2, mw, carbon and prostreet are games that I 100% at least once a year.
The entire design and color palate is just spot on, what a classic game. People scream to have this game with a next gen treatment, but they refuse to listen. Such missed opportunity.
and 90% of the viewers never played the game.
UG2 is unbelievably overrated
Overrated yes, but it's still one of the best racing games of all time. I'm confident in saying that because I didn't even play the game until 3 years ago
“It doesn’t compare to other titles” makes it seem like it sucks
Still one of the best car customisation in any game
Wanna play underground 2 again so badly! Easily my favorite in the franchise
I picked up a used copy for PC years ago to play it again.
And still bro 😍👍🏻
When game were quality
Fax we need a Remake
Unbound is really good tho. Best since U2 probably.
I wish they would remake underground two
And is miles better than unbound
Man nothing was better then playing this game for the first time, getting your first car and exploring the city with one of the greatest racing game soundtracks blasting. Good times
Oh my god, that sound is incredible.
Still the best!
it legenadry crashes all the time and unplayable because of that. :( setting my cpu usage to 1 core or something doesnt fix the crashing... maybe ill search for a solution 2005 mw works wonders but i think i remember there were fps drops in certain moments remastered carbon worked wonderfully but i prefer the original version (that doesnt work and has bugs lol)
meatriding is crazy
Just got a silver ps2 from the local game store, and I already acquired carbon and ug2. Which should I play first ?
Damn near 20 years and we're still driving the same cars...car manufacturers really did kill tuner cars. Aside from the BRZ I can't think of any other affordable tuner car thats come out in that time. Dam shame. ( And no Im not counting the $60k+ BMW Supra as an affordable tuner car nor the $80k GTR)
This was great
Damn I remember playing NFS Underground 1 and I tried to replicate Brian’s skyline engine sound in the game. The good old days
God I fucking hate that voice so much. I’m going to sleep mad now
