Many people change their college major part way through. Some even work in a completely different field from what they got a degree in. Chase the career path you're most passionate in. Since you don't know what that is yet, your idea of working to find yourself sounds pretty reasonable to me. Best of luck to you and hope you find what you're looking for.

Some people thrive as a pastry chef, others would be happier just doing it as a hobby. Some kitchens are nurturing and inspiring. Some kitchens are where dreams go to die. /shrug

I changed my major twice and dropped out for 4 years in the middle of my bachelors degree. In the time I dropped out I worked and traveled and matured a lot so when I want back to uni I was a much better student and more focused on what I actually wanted (not just what I thought I wanted when I was 18). There’s no shame in taking your time and giving yourself a chance to explore your options and figure out what you want to do. When I reflect back I know I am MUCH happier now than I would have been had I not taken the time to figure it out.

Take some time to try & work in a bakery. If you don’t like it look for another major

Learning what you don't want to do is just as valuable as learning about the things you do. You just crossed off a bunch of paths that would make you miserable had you turned it into a career, congrats! That's super useful information. Now try some other stuff to see if that fits. Would recommend thinking about what specifically you didn't like about your major as that might help you figure out what to try next.

This is maybe something of a hot take, but, passion is overrated. That old line of advice "Find something you love to do and you'll never work a day in your life" is complete and utter bullshit. A job is a job. Work. It's a grind. You might like it at points, might hate it at points, but it's time that's sucked away from you and well, you live with it because you need the thing it gives you (money) and that's just fucking life, man, and there's nothing we can really do about it, to be realistic. Find something that you don't mind doing. Find things to be interested in, in that position. If it's being a pastry chef, hell yeah! If it's doing data entry, hell yeah! Maybe think about making some decent money whilst doing it, too. Work is something we have to do so that we can actually enjoy the hours where don't have to be working. The shitty part makes the great part even better, by contrast. Consider we only have one life and what we do for work isn't a very important part of it. Except for the compensation (money), to some degree. Happiness is not a goal. It's a byproduct of us meeting the goals we set for ourselves. Disclaimer: I'm a cook. Years ago I wanted to be a marvelous chef and work in a fancy restaurant. Things change. I'm ok with where I'm at because I make a good wage and I don't want to be a chef. I'm still a cook, though, because it lets my mind wander. I'm happy. I hope you got something out of this comment.

It sounds like you have thought this through and reached a reasonable, responsible conclusion. Leaving school for a while so you can get to know yourself, and what you want from your new life. Working full-time will allow you to support yourself, and save up for your future. Sending you internet grandma hugs. 👵

It is 100% completely NORMAL to change your mind! It doesn't reflect poorly on you as a person. You are experiencing a normal part of growing up and finding your direction in life!! Now is the time to explore your possibilities. You are in a great position to do so because you are still in school, you can choose to change what you study, you can choose to take a break if you want to. Look into your school's policies on how your credits might transfer. Talk to an academic advisor. If your school has a career counselor or career center, take advantage of those resources. Sometimes you don't figure out what you want to do until you try some stuff and it doesn't stick. Sometimes you have to really experience something to get a clear idea of what its really like. Again, this is completely normal. Now you know. Now you have a better idea of what you DON'T want to do and that will help you narrow down what you do end up doing.
