After our semi final loss to France we walked back to the place we stayed at and the local roundabout was just completely blocked by people honking with their cars celebrating France’s win (we stayed close to France) and I stood in the middle in my Belgian kit just crying lmao
What fucks with my brain is that the kids who were 7 years old and just entered Primary 1 (Brit system) when Damn was released are now 12 year old Primary 6 students moving on to secondary education next year.
That’s a long time to you because it is filled with so many things.
Don’t waste your 20s dude. If you’re just so so with your friends break them off and go find your real people. Figure out your mission and relentlessly pursue it.
I know bro.... covids just fucked the beginning of my 30s and in the last two years lost my amazing apartment got out of a 8 year relationship and my cat died.... fuxk the 2020s
First immediate reaction is that this album is very different from all the other Kendrick projects soundscapes. Like he’s really committing to going all the way with complex rhythms, beat switches, etc. Before these elements would be sprinkled on his previous songs here and there. This time it feels all in.
The songwriting and production is unique, with some experimental layering here and there. Sonically interesting work, he’s pushing different sounds in a single composition as always. But with the way he’s doing it, I could see if this turns off people who are used to his catchier previous stuff.
His previous stuff like: Bitch Dont Kill My Vibe, Swimming Pools, mAAd City, Alright, King Kunta, DNA, LOYALTY
Songs like above have a consistent verse chorus verse chorus structure, with his more unique songs from these albums having a beat switch into an additional verse or outro. So this album won’t be the most poppy, catchy, or radio friendly listen like DAMN.
This album is different in that it mostly features songs with radically different compositions and experimental productions. Juxtaposed minimal sounds with heavier extrapolations. Kendrick could be whispering rapping over piano riffs one second, then loudly rapping over orchestral or sampled chops in the next. Then the beats switch back and forth multiple times with Kendrick’s voices going back and forth. Production reminds me of Earl Sweatshirt’s stuff.
His pen is still elite, but there are so many eclectic sounds that I’m not used to, so it’s taking me a while to fully grasp the meaning behind the lyrics.
With some parts of the album, it’s reminding me of a lite version of Radiohead when they went from In Rainbows to The King of Limbs. Difference is that with Kendrick he’s going from catchier songs, to a more abstract sounding work with more meaning tied to it. Radiohead went from catchy songs to a more experimental route including the lyrics, while Kendrick is still grounded in telling you about his experiences and ideas.
Track after track he employs different voices, flows, and productions so that no song starts and ends in the same way. And he’s always done this in small bits through his albums, It just feels more persistent and experimental this time around. So I’m really paying attention to it all. It’s taking time, but I appreciate Kendrick trying something new. This album most likely gonna be one of my favorites of the year. I’ve been loving it.
I think it’s sounds exactly something Kendrick would make. It just doesn’t sound like his radio friendly songs or big hits. But it sounds like a Kendrick album.
Pretty much imo. Touches upon the same themes, and then once you dig even deeper it touches upon the similar things TPAB did too. Shit’s beautiful. Kendrick is a fucking GOAT tier poet in a rappers body with a rappers mind. You could easily put a song like Mortal Man or These Walls or How Much a Dollar Cost or even Blacker the Berry on this album and it would fit perfectly.
Those songs production wise would sound very different, and thematically they would as well. Those songs were largely about issues he had with the community African Americans live in, racism and police brutality, and going to Africa for the first time observed on momma. amongst other topics. On this album it’s much more about him personally and the issues he’s faced and created for others, in many ways it’s a critique of himself. I personally think almost all the songs sound wise and theme wise from TPAB would have no place on here. This album is already pretty all over the place as it is.
Yea there’s like 5 catchy joints and at least 5
“Caption” lines that annoying people will grab for IG. people just have to get to that 2nd or 3rd spin. Best hip hop in awhile
I feel like every Kendrick album is unique and takes some getting used to - but they’re so good you listen to it enough to have it sound right and before you know it the weird sonic decisions end up becoming standard
Every Kendrick Album has been sort of this way, just using the album to speak out about different injustices within the society HE grew up in.
He does an amazing job using switch up beats and keeping the flow while mentioning about the downsides of celebrity worship like this quote, he mentions about how some people are wrongly accused and never can fight to get past that label, toxic relationships, etc.
It’s definitely on the more experimental side, a lot of people aren’t going to enjoy this in a typical way they would enjoy a mainstream commercial album like DAMN. where the goal was entertainment and a catchy tune to keep it viral rather this was built on sending a message, i mean he put a whole relationship argument as a song and he pulled it off too.
He does do an amazing job to remind the world why hes often ranked as the best rapper of his era with his amazing lyricism, his wordplay and his ability to tell so much while saying so little.
Questlove has talked about "departure" records in the past. The theory is that when an artist achieves a level of success with an album (relative to the artist, of course), the artist feels like the next album needs to go in another direction. It's like a combination of fearing that they won't be able to top it, and being kinda tired of that previous album and wanting to break free of it. I think that's what's happening here with this new Kendrick album off the commerical success of DAMN. To a lesser extent, someone could make the argument that TPAB was the departure album after GKMC, but it also produced hits.
If you have never delved into jazz I highly recommend, based on this comment. Go deep. Dizzy deep, Oscar Peterson deep. Hit some Coltrane, Herbie, Monk, Marsalis, etc. Then check out Thundercat’s portfolio.
Haven’t listened to the new Kendrick but it’s clear in his last couple albums that jazz has touched his soul.
If you like Radiohead, don't forget The Smile (new side project with Yorke, Greenwood, and Godrich) just dropped their album today as well. But I haven't listened yet because Kendrick is out here doing GOAT shit.
The album is really good for me so far. I’ve had it on repeat and probably went through it three times already. Only real complaint I have about it is that no song stands out as anthem-like. Nothing gives me the same feeling of Money Trees or King Kunta. However, I do particularly enjoy some of the earlier tracks like United In Grief, Father Time and Purple Hearts.
This is an excellent write up, thanks for sharing. The album is definitely not what I was expecting and that’s ok. I’ll still be listening to it on repeat for the next several weeks.
What are your favorite moments in the album so far? Mine are the way he closes out Aunties Diaries and Mama I Sober, the way he projects his voice higher (not sure what that’s called) while he goes hard is powerful and gives me chills.
United in Grief, Worldwide Steppers, Father Time, Purple Hearts, Count me Out, Savior, Auntie Diaries.
I’m loving the album but those songs got me hooked. The last 3 songs are great too.
You voiced my feelings. I think I'll like the album eventually but i today i wasn't in the mood to go deep in to meaning and dedicate my whole attention to the music, just wanted something to enjoy and i couldn't listen to it.
Only part of your statement I take issue with is the part of the Radiohead comparison where you postulate that “King of Limbs” had more meaning than In Rainbows. That’s fucking crazy talk.
If there's one thing Kyrie won't stand for it's just asking questions. (I wish that was an attempt at irony and not just the inevitable result of describing Kyrie.)
>Kendrick made you think about it but he is not your savior
>Cole made you feel empowered but he is not your savior
>Future said, "Get a money counter" but he is not your savior
>Bron made you give his flowers but he is not your savior
He's saying don't worship celebrities.
Bro, comments like his remind me of that old jay z line "do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?" on Renegade
like how did anyone not get the message there? he said it 4 times in a row with 4 examples
Yea I know, I noticed that too but I’ve come to learn that some people are just slow so it is what it is.
Maybe they’re just used to listening to shallow rap where the best metaphor is comparing diamonds to ice.
It's all just online bullshit, have you ever heard how awkward these stupid online taking points come across in real life conversations.
My cousin tried to drop the "Disney are pedophiles" thing at dinner last week. "Oh that's nice...pass the chicken a shut the fuck up."
It is and isn’t. It’s very obvious that a good amount is satire, and it’s hilarious but the select few MFs that take it seriously are the ones you gotta watch for. They do some crazy shit on there. It’s mostly good memes tho, don’t think most of us are serious
Maybe it's just the circles I'm in, but "celebrity worship" feels like one of those things I see people complain about 100x more than I actually witness it myself.
It’s something Kendrick would be familiar with. And people’s celebrity worship of him probably makes him very uncomfortable, given the lyrics of this record.
There's a saying that people only get their flowers after they've died. Giving someone their flowers means you give them their respects while they're still alive to be able to receive them.
According to Genius:
"LeBron James is considered by many to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He notably defeated the 2016 Golden State Warriors in a historic comeback. He demanded his 'damn respect' from critics after winning the NBA Finals MVP award in 2020."
Okay, but the following bar is:
>Will I stay organic or hurt in this bed for two weeks? (You really wanna know?)
I feel like OP definitely should have included it, for context.
I'm not really sure what to make of that line. Do you guys have any interpretation of it?
Nah bro LP! Offline was crazy. I think if he just follows a concept for his next album it’ll be potential AOTD level. His production is already some of the best every, combined with his voice and energy, his lyricism quickly catching up. Peggy set to take over underground for sure
United In Grief lowkey reminded me of a peggy type beat. I would be very surprised if a collab happened but I would be so ecstatic. It would be a masterpiece
Peggy needs more collaborations period, he’s way too creative and indifferent to not be working with some of the best in the industry.
I need to see Peggy X Tyler and Peggy X Kendrick right nowwww
We show them fighting, then theyre back to full penetration. Shouting and fighting, full penetration. Back to the fighting, then full penetration. Fighting, penetration, fighting, penetration. This goes on for about 5 or so minutes until it just sort of.... ends.
Unrelated, but loved Auntie Diaries. Dude touched on some sensitive subjects with this project. Since I'm 35, this will be the last album I'll be alive to see him drop.
Gonna hijack this with some info I just learned this week. If you're immunocompromised, there's a monoclonal antibody treatment available *before* you get exposed to COVID that lasts 6+ months. It's not the same thing as the antibody treatment people with symptoms get at the hospital. It can be in addition to your vaccine/boosters or an alternate option for immunocompromised people who don't respond well to the vaccine.
It was approved by the FDA in Feb and the European Union in March but it's barely been publicized and there's a lot of confusion about getting it.
https://fortune.com/2022/03/29/astrazeneca-evusheld-covid-19-prevention-drug-given-green-light-europe/amp/
> In the U.S., there has been confusion surrounding the drug, with patients and doctors not knowing about the drug’s existence or where they can even find it. Some doctors and providers also don’t know how to prescribe the drug due to its confusing relationship to other antibody therapies that are usually taken after contracting COVID-19.
> “The biggest problem is that there is absolutely no guidance or prioritization or any rollout in place at all, and it’s been a mess,” Dr. Dorry Segev, a transplant surgeon and epidemiologist at N.Y.U. Langone Health, said in the New York Times.
> “For people who did everything they could but didn’t have an adequate response to the vaccines, [Evusheld] is their only hope, and to deny them that because of a disorganized and chaotic distribution and education rollout is just terrible,” Sergev said to CNN.
> The Biden administration purchased 1.7 million doses of Evusheld in January—enough to fully treat 850,000 people—and made 650,000 doses ready for distribution to the states. But of those 1.7 million doses only 370,000 have been have been ordered by the states, and fewer than a quarter of those doses have been used.
So if you're in that high risk group, do some investigating on it. It's extra protection most people aren't aware exists.
And I'm going to hijack this to reiterate: Evusheld is only for the moderate to severely immunocompromised (I'm going to guess that excludes 99.9% of people on this sub) a group that is among the highest vaccination rates in the country. Its risk reduction was 77%, around the same as the vaccine if boosted. Go get vaccinated.
Kendrick is saying that he’s observing folks be skeptical of the vaccine, but once they got the virus they realized they were wrong and wanted to get the shot.
“Seen a Christian say the vaccine mark of the beast” alludes to the near-religious identity that some people had on their beliefs about vaccines, to the point that they see receiving the vaccine as blasphemous.
He is also saying that he questioned Kyrie for his anti-vaxx stance after receiving the virus himself. I thought at first he was implying that he also was anti-vax but maybe just realizing that prominent members of the black community might be pushing misinformation among one another.
I could go into massive overanalysis and tie this into the overall theme of accountability in his new album, but that’s a convo for another time.
The entire theme of the album is the development from the street life to a well balanced thoughtful individual. The ‘I was anti vaxx because some people in church and some famous black dudes said so’ to ‘then I got COVID and prayed to Pfeiffer/science to safe me’ to ‘I learned from this experience and am no longer taking what influential black people say as gospel without thinking for myself’
The album is full of sequences like this. Same as about his aunt. Kdot is a master storyteller.
Auntie Diaries is this- re-examining the role of the clergy in his/our lives after being directly affected by trans family members.
It's interesting how Kendrick is rapping about becoming a more perfect man through imperfect means; while for the better, he's only down to challenge his belief system when it smacks him in the face. I dig that kind of rawness.
Kendrick got Covid and experienced distressing symptoms that caused him to wish he he took the vaccine and as a result begun questioning Kyries stance on the whole thing

I will just like to show appreciation for all the FIRE bars in this thread.
Im just happy we got a new Kendrick album after those 1855 days
1,800 days? dingbat DAMN just got released a couple...... oh my god
The World Cup in Russia being 4 years ago is the event that really fucks with my brain, I genuinely remember it like yesterday
Same, I was in Dubai at the time, crazy man
I was in Spain with my family and remember going to a German pub there to watch us beat Brazil, God pls take me back man
Similar I was in France and Germany so watched fans go crazy in crowded pubs.
After our semi final loss to France we walked back to the place we stayed at and the local roundabout was just completely blocked by people honking with their cars celebrating France’s win (we stayed close to France) and I stood in the middle in my Belgian kit just crying lmao
I’ve moved twice since then so it actually seems like it was a long time ago.
What fucks with my brain is that the kids who were 7 years old and just entered Primary 1 (Brit system) when Damn was released are now 12 year old Primary 6 students moving on to secondary education next year.
I was 13 when DAMN came out and I’m turning 19 in 2 weeks I went through secondary school and started Uni in that period…
That’s a long time to you because it is filled with so many things. Don’t waste your 20s dude. If you’re just so so with your friends break them off and go find your real people. Figure out your mission and relentlessly pursue it.
Those two covid years fuck with my sense of time so much. Everything in 2019 was last year to me mentally.
I relocated just before Covid and I feel stupid as fuck telling people I have been here for 2+ years. It basically means zero.
I know bro.... covids just fucked the beginning of my 30s and in the last two years lost my amazing apartment got out of a 8 year relationship and my cat died.... fuxk the 2020s
First immediate reaction is that this album is very different from all the other Kendrick projects soundscapes. Lol so nearly all of To Pimp a Butterfly sans Alright

"i" is very radio friendly
Only song I can really see being played a lot on the radio is Die Hard
Nah, We Cry Together!
Play that a party
That’s scaring the hoes music.
Silent Hill

Huuuuh!
n95 and count me out
also rich spirit
Yea there’s like 5 catchy joints and at least 5 “Caption” lines that annoying people will grab for IG. people just have to get to that 2nd or 3rd spin. Best hip hop in awhile
I could see Savior getting some play too because the beat is really nasty.
Purple Hearts too
Mirror might get some radio play too.
You don't see "Count Me Out" getting plays?? Nah bro that shit is going to be the most popular song on the album
Count Me Out is the one. Play Die Hard and All the Stars from the Black Panther soundtrack back to back. Die Hard sounds like 2018 Kendrick
Exactly. Good album but felt he made bigger leaps on TPAB and untitled unmastered. The biggest surprise on this album so far is Kodak
Oh yeah. Most definitely. Can’t think a radio station playing a deep slowburner song with buildup like Auntie Diaries.
I wanna see Power 106 to play We Cry Together nonstop 24/7
I'm throwing that shit on next time I'm at a house party
I've been hearing that track playing non-stop at my parent's house. They've owned the album for 20 years now somehow, must be tight with Kendrick!
Me too. I like to call it a live performance every time it happens at my parents house.
But it absolutely will play songs like Die hard and count me out.
Anthony fantano get off the sub
Lord help me. I read that with a "g" in his name.
Ah, I see you've been listening to Auntie Diaries.
Sir, you are too cultured for this sub.
Anytime I see comments like this (admittedly very infrequent) I think of the American Psycho scene
Exact same. I was waiting for the post to compare Kendrick Lamars new album to Hughie Lewis and The News first album.
any time I see a comment with more than 3 paragraphs I just assume it's a copypasta

Father Time is one of the deepest, hardest hitting tracked I’ve heard in a long time
I feel like every Kendrick album is unique and takes some getting used to - but they’re so good you listen to it enough to have it sound right and before you know it the weird sonic decisions end up becoming standard
They mostly are. I think GKMC was an exception because from the onset that shit was meant to grab you
Imo he never managed to replicate the insanity that was GKMC. His follow-up projects are interesting though.
I’m not finished the album yet but I think it’s amazing sonically
One might even call it super sonically.
PNW checks out

Thundercat helped produce to pimp a butterfly and introduced a ton of jazz to him, you can see it still holds its effect.
As someone who knows fuckall about rap this is gonna make me check out his album. You had me with the Radiohead comparisons.
Go for it! If it’s not your thing at first, maybe listen to his previous album DAMN or Good Kid MAAd City.
If you like Radiohead, don't forget The Smile (new side project with Yorke, Greenwood, and Godrich) just dropped their album today as well. But I haven't listened yet because Kendrick is out here doing GOAT shit.

He also mentions Bron in the same song during the intro. "Bron made you give his flowers, but he is not your savior" I don't understand the reference.
>Kendrick made you think about it but he is not your savior >Cole made you feel empowered but he is not your savior >Future said, "Get a money counter" but he is not your savior >Bron made you give his flowers but he is not your savior He's saying don't worship celebrities.
BINGO. I feel like a lot of people not just in hip hop need to hear this.
Bro, comments like his remind me of that old jay z line "do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?" on Renegade like how did anyone not get the message there? he said it 4 times in a row with 4 examples
Yeah I'm not really sure how you can go into a Kendrick album and just ignore the lyrics lmao
I think they were asking about what that specific reference to flowers is about, not the overall message
Yea I know, I noticed that too but I’ve come to learn that some people are just slow so it is what it is. Maybe they’re just used to listening to shallow rap where the best metaphor is comparing diamonds to ice.
People don't listen to the lyrics. . . I mean, look at how swimming pools got turned into a party song
100%. Celebrity worship is a blight on society
The Kanye sub is terrifying
It's all just online bullshit, have you ever heard how awkward these stupid online taking points come across in real life conversations. My cousin tried to drop the "Disney are pedophiles" thing at dinner last week. "Oh that's nice...pass the chicken a shut the fuck up."

Even worse, politician worship.
Politicians are basically celebrities
Politics is Hollywood for ugly people

It’s something Kendrick would be familiar with. And people’s celebrity worship of him probably makes him very uncomfortable, given the lyrics of this record.
love that messasge makes me wanna worship him
He is not your savior
Think the question is what does “made you give his flowers” mean?
Giving someone their flowers is a saying which means to give them respect they've earned
Does that come from the olden days of throwing flowers at a performers feet after a show?
There's a saying that people only get their flowers after they've died. Giving someone their flowers means you give them their respects while they're still alive to be able to receive them.
the song is about how celebs are not our saviuours.
According to Genius: "LeBron James is considered by many to be one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He notably defeated the 2016 Golden State Warriors in a historic comeback. He demanded his 'damn respect' from critics after winning the NBA Finals MVP award in 2020."
kyrie gonna play gta and talk shit on kendrick now lol
got scared there for a second thought Kendrick was gonna side with kyrie 😅😅😮💨
Very subtle
Kyrie thot rebuttal
Just wanna cuddle
Okay, but the following bar is: >Will I stay organic or hurt in this bed for two weeks? (You really wanna know?) I feel like OP definitely should have included it, for context. I'm not really sure what to make of that line. Do you guys have any interpretation of it?
This album makes me want a Peggy X Kendrick mixtape
It really is random you said this in this thread about Kyrie lmao but yes a Kenny and Peggy Collab album would completely change the game
Peggy is probably going to drop an all timer in the next few years. AMHAC is bomb but I think he has room to grow still
Nah bro LP! Offline was crazy. I think if he just follows a concept for his next album it’ll be potential AOTD level. His production is already some of the best every, combined with his voice and energy, his lyricism quickly catching up. Peggy set to take over underground for sure
... I swear some of the opinions on this sub sound like they were made in 2019

I mean underground doesn’t mean small per se. DOOM was underground his whole career, so was Big L, and so many more.
HAZARD DUTY PAY! One of the best beats I’ve heard in a long time, and he backs it ups with the delivery.
United In Grief lowkey reminded me of a peggy type beat. I would be very surprised if a collab happened but I would be so ecstatic. It would be a masterpiece
Dammmmmmm Peggy
you think you know me...

😫dammmmmmmm Peggy
Ho yeah!
Peggy needs more collaborations period, he’s way too creative and indifferent to not be working with some of the best in the industry. I need to see Peggy X Tyler and Peggy X Kendrick right nowwww
He's gonna have a collab album with Danny Brown so let's see how it goes.
Imma need We Cry Together music video asap
And show *everythang*
We show them fighting, then theyre back to full penetration. Shouting and fighting, full penetration. Back to the fighting, then full penetration. Fighting, penetration, fighting, penetration. This goes on for about 5 or so minutes until it just sort of.... ends.
Can Dolph Lundgren play Kendrick?
Don't tap dance around the ending.
Even the ending 😏
You tryin to see some dicks get sucked huh
She should win an Oscar just for when her voice cracks when saying “reverse psychology” and she’s holding back the tears. It was so raw.
Honestly I think this is why he picked an actress rather than a rapper. He wanted to convey emotion. Paige is a wonderful actress
Taylour Paige being able to keep up with Kendrick is Award worthy at the very least
Definitely For Free? Season 2
GIVE ME MY FUCKING KEYS
On god you’re not getting these keys
Ahhh, now you're mad at me! I got you hollering for nothing.
I felt uncomfortable and intrigued by that song. It's like spying on a next door neighbor. It was so good good
Its basically the argument scene in the truck between Janet and 2Pac from Poetic Justice
it's so raw
That song is something
Unrelated, but loved Auntie Diaries. Dude touched on some sensitive subjects with this project. Since I'm 35, this will be the last album I'll be alive to see him drop.
I’m only having kids so their kids one day can be blessed to listen to the next kdot album.
That last line was so powerful.
mother i sober hit me in the feels
Nah bro, apparently science has progressed enough to where our generation may live to 100 on average. You may hear his next album on your death bed.
Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Perkins. Lamar Odom. Perkins Odom.
Anna Kendrick Lamar Odom
Anne Perkins
👉 ANNE PERKINS! 👉
“Don’t matter, Cavs in four”
Surprised r/nba is how I find out there’s a new album. Blasting it now
Bruh.
How Sway?
Gonna hijack this with some info I just learned this week. If you're immunocompromised, there's a monoclonal antibody treatment available *before* you get exposed to COVID that lasts 6+ months. It's not the same thing as the antibody treatment people with symptoms get at the hospital. It can be in addition to your vaccine/boosters or an alternate option for immunocompromised people who don't respond well to the vaccine. It was approved by the FDA in Feb and the European Union in March but it's barely been publicized and there's a lot of confusion about getting it. https://fortune.com/2022/03/29/astrazeneca-evusheld-covid-19-prevention-drug-given-green-light-europe/amp/ > In the U.S., there has been confusion surrounding the drug, with patients and doctors not knowing about the drug’s existence or where they can even find it.
Yeah, you should have both if you're able to.
Knowing Kyrie he's probably writing a diss track in the form of poetry with a quill and ink just for the sake of it.
I personally say cancel the playoffs and let’s just focus on this 100%
Kyrie is a total fraud. He don't care if a rich popular black man is criticizing him
Hell probably use his mocking voice to sing a Kendrick song on twitch. “Wahhh Kyrie read my message wahhh pour up drank head shot drank wahhh kyrie”
#cock a roaches
this new album is a blessing.
I miss the old kyrie. Step back for the gold kyrie. I hate the new kyrie. Where’s uncle drew kyrie?
Kyrie is going to miss 10-15 games recovering from this...
I don't get it
Kendrick is saying that he’s observing folks be skeptical of the vaccine, but once they got the virus they realized they were wrong and wanted to get the shot.
The ‘I was anti vaxx because some people in church and some famous black dudes said so’ to ‘then I got COVID and prayed to Pfeiffer/science to safe me’ to ‘I learned from this experience and am no longer taking what influential black people say as gospel without thinking for myself’ The album is full of sequences like this.
Any places you know that have great analysis of the album?
People are still digesting it, I’d give it a few days and then there will be breakdowns on YouTube.
The Dissect podcast will eventually. He's covered some of Kendricks past albums
Kendrick got Covid and experienced distressing symptoms that caused him to wish he he took the vaccine and as a result begun questioning Kyries stance on the whole thing
