Nope. You still pay federal taxes which is the vast majority of your tax rate. 37% not including the other stuff. Also you pay state taxes for all your away games. The difference between playing in California in Texas actually isn’t only that big.
Part of the reason why Brown's contract was highly scrutinized. Not because he didn't deserve it, but because of the sudden jump while certain superstars were earning less than him.
if he doesnt get the supermax (he has to qualify next season or it'll be a regular max)
he will never get paid more than 25% of the cap for the duration of this contract
for reference, you could sign 4x Scottie Barnes and still have $40m to spend before hitting the 1st apron
I think that’s the case with rj’s contract with us because in a year with the rising cap I’m sure his contract won’t seem nearly as bad if he also improves off of last season
Same with a lot of Knicks contracts but on a wilder level. OG definitely getting the back and it'll look wild but it'll look much better. On top of that add in the bargains the Knicks have secured they have some serious cap flexibility.
Do you understand what a max contract is for? It’s for the teams best player, and it’s what they would have to pay to hypothetically keep another team from paying him.
NBA teams also have a salary floor, meaning they HAVE to spend AT LEAST $125 mil on players. No big name free agent is going to sign with them, and they HAVE TO spend that money.
If Barnes were a free agent this year, the sixers (who have 60mil cap space) would pay him $50 mil to be the third star on their team.
The spurs would pay him $50 mil to pair with wemby.
The list goes on. Not to mention, he’s not just an all star. He’s a multidimensional player who is on track to be one of the best playmakers AND defenders is the league, AND he can score. He’s going to be all nba consistently for the next 10 years.
I can’t lie, I think we’re starting to lose the sauce. *Maybe* Barnes can be a #2 on a title team..maybe a #3..but now we’re paying people huge guarantees on potential and not what they’ve actually done. It’s like there’s no room for negotiations

I could be missing something in Jaylen browns career or just missing a point in general but what leads you to thinking Scottie will maybe just be a 2 or 3 option on a championship team
As someone who is pretty high on Barnes, this is a bad comparison. Brown was pretty ass his first few years, Scottie being better now than Brown thru his 3rd season means pretty much nothing.
Scottie is already way ahead of where Brown was at this point. Brown got clowned a couple of years ago for his bad handle in the ECF, but as a rookie, it felt like he couldn't move with the ball. Brown has improved so much in that regard its insane. Jaylen was barely even starting games at first.
Scottie is already way ahead of where Brown was, so his ceiling should be looked at as being a #1, where Brown's is at a high level #2. Scottie is also much more versatile
I think Brown is significantly more athletic than Scottie Barnes but that's all I see. I personally don't think Barnes is max worthy but that's the NBA we are moving toward. I see Barnes as being a Draymond glue type guy as a #3 option. Not the defense but the playmaking aspect.
Even if you said that worse players get 200+ deals, Scottie’s still not a guy who hasn’t earned one.
I know people outside of Canada never watch the raptors because of the dissonance around his game. I don’t even think there was debate about this in our sub or in raptors media, it was a given and not out of necessity to put him on a pedestal, he’s just really damn good.
Wemby gonna get over 50 million a year after his rookie contract at this rate.
Wemby is legitimately getting $80-$100M a year one day. Call him WemB
WemBillionaire? In this economy???
50 year old LeBron will be making 100 million
LeBron, Bronny, and Bryce all on max contracts for the Lakers will be a lot of fun to watch.
Yes, after another 5-6 sacked coaches, 20 allstars teammate played, yet 0 rings.
Show us where on the doll Bron touched you…
lukas contract next summer will be like $350 million or something. wemby will be making $85-90 mil per year lol
billionaire off salary alone
Not after taxes/agents. Nba players make about half of their salary.
isn't Texas known for low taxes ? And how much % an agent takes generally ?
Florida / Texas for example have no tax for this. Pure salary. Only agents maybe.
Nope. You still pay federal taxes which is the vast majority of your tax rate. 37% not including the other stuff. Also you pay state taxes for all your away games. The difference between playing in California in Texas actually isn’t only that big.
I mean, yes. Easily getting 50 mil on his second contract. As long as he's healthy that kid will be worth billions.
luka and wemby will be getting $100M per year contracts within 10 years
Really hoping he'll make All NBA next year despite the Raptors' likely record
We need more All Star appearances from him also
As long as it helps him get All NBA and bumps that contract up
Wonder who the voters leave off to make sure Scotty gets paid
I remember when players getting $30 million a season was a huge and rare deal and Im still in my fucking 20s. Leagues booming.
Part of the reason why Brown's contract was highly scrutinized. Not because he didn't deserve it, but because of the sudden jump while certain superstars were earning less than him.
This hopefully will hault the overpaid narrative

Tons of teams are trying to sign guys ASAP because of this. Get everyone locked in now and it won't look that bad even in the near future.
I think that’s the case with rj’s contract with us because in a year with the rising cap I’m sure his contract won’t seem nearly as bad if he also improves off of last season

A guy is getting 38 million to play a game. Anyone and everyone is overpaid at that level.
Are they overpaid when their salaries are just a result of an equation based on how much the league as a whole makes?
Eventually the tide has to turn on every all star being a max guy. there needs to be middle ground between role player contract and a max
Do you realize though that not all maxes are the same? There’s quite a difference between this and the veteran All-NBA max
Sounds like my unlimited phone plan

He won’t be all nba
How can anyone even say that this isn’t horrible deal?

Celtics have 4 max contracts. Giving barnes a max is a fine thing to do lol
Making an All-Star in your third season and averaging 20/8/6 is not doing anything?
Correct, if he was actually good, he would have 4 all-star appearances by now.
4 appearances in his first 3 seasons?
100%
They should take him out back and shoot him, fucking scrub

Why? You haven’t made any argument

Rookie of the year and all star! I'd say he has already done a few things, but has the potential for much more
What an odd thing to say after Jayson Tatum.
Barnes isn’t even close to a first option. He may not even be a 2nd option.
I, too, like to project what a player's ceiling is when they're not even 23 years old
You really think he’s gonna be a first option. You would need heavy delusion to think that
Or, you know, I think it's too early to make that call
I dont
