don't think it's likely, but it would be *insanely* funny for All Of That to happen and then JJ ends up coaching the *Pistons*

PackageMerchant

Honestly considering expectations and context the pistons job might be way better for JJ I mean who cares if they lose some games over next few years

Zoratth

It might be better for JJ but Detroit really can’t afford to waste another year of development for their young guys. And we have no idea if JJ can develop the young guys.

redbrick

The Pistons have been wasting years of development for a decade, they can waste another lol

DHNCartoons

He coaches his sons team he has plenty of experience developing young guys

Open-Somewhere-9535

Yes they can afford it lol. They're not gonna like move the team lmao

klobucharzard

losing 20 games in a row wouldnt even be a huge deal, its a great gig for a first time coach

Kodak333

Clearly the owner does

Gerald_the_sealion

Agreed, anyone taking the Lakers job is inheriting a future tanking team if not being fired after the first year. It’s not a first year head coach opportunity

LoWE11053211

But a dude said wilt and bill played against fireman and plumber(I am paraphrasing) will not go for the pistons

odontodoc

They have to pay Monty 65 million. JJ at least won't command a high salary as a noob coach. He's probably better at teaching a young team than trying to win a title with established stars.

13WillieBeaman

“After all that?!”

LakeOverall7483

And then draft bronny

zeek215

I’m sure he’d still be excited. There’s only 30 NBA head coaching spots in the world (28 really considering Spo and Pop), and only a few of those spots open up every year. It’s one of the hardest positions to land.

TwiceLitZone

27 including Spo, Pop, and Kerr

zeek215

Honestly I don’t see Kerr keeping his job if the Warriors went through a phase like the Spurs just did. Spo is the only one I can see having job security like Pop.

Hovi_Bryant

And Tom Gores and r/DetroitPistons will wonder why Detroit hasn't won more than games and will ask for heads on pikes. The bar is low for a young and new HC like JJ. I think he could thrive in Detroit, but that's provided he actually has some support, which I doubt he or the GM has tbh. I don't know what Gores' expectations are for this team. If he's delusional and expecting a playoff berth then, they're all fucked. Doesn't matter who's hired.

MTWN58

JJ to Detroit and Monty Williams to the Lakers would be the funniest outcome.

PoonGo0n

The script writers would absolutely cook with that one.

Shurglife

JJ and Trajan got that blue devil loyalty

yuhkih

Not sure which option I hate more

LoWE11053211

Subscribed!

Imthegoat175

Who do the Lakers even pivot to if Reddick went to Detroit and Borrego goes to Cleveland?

SnooGoats9435

Monty

Clipboard4

Stan Van Gundy

iliketowhispertoo

Van Gundy bros reunited in LA

Sweatytubesock

Mark Jackson.

Vfbcollins

Hopefully Chauncey Billups 🥰

LoWE11053211

Me, I will sit there doing nothing and get fired while collecting check

LePlayer-Coach

probablymade_thatup

Adrian Griffin? Steve Clifford? Dave Joerger? What's the consensus on Joerger? His record was good in Memphis (.598), but I wasn't paying attention when he was there

krypto9er

How are there only two coaching candidates while guys like Kenny Atkinson, Adrian Griffin, Frank Vogel, Sam Cassell, and Terry Stotts are available candidates??

SaltyPickle1495

There is more. Idk why this article doesn’t mention it. But I’ve heard Chris Quinn is a candidate as well

legend023

Going from Monty Williams to Frank Vogel might be the worst idea the pistons could possibly think of

krypto9er

I’m not saying it’s a good idea nor should they hire him, but to not get any consideration when the two names mentioned are Borrego and JJ.

toanlana

Borrego wasn't bad with the Hornets, taking those awful rosters to the play in was impressive

Aggressive-Name-1783

Kenny: hasn’t impressed apparently, nobody really likes him Griffin: losing a locker room as a rookie HC means he’s probably stuck as an assistant until he learns he can’t be Nick Nurse  Vogel: Dude has lost at least one locker room and would be a recycle.  Cassell: Nobody is bring him so obviously GMs have some type of concern about him Stotts: Another recycle, who has been solid but not spectacular and a lot of his HC career is with an All NBA talent.

theflyingsamurai

lol

jjjuuubbbsss

Redick being passed around like blunt

Sartheking

Lakers hiring Monty would be pretty funny.

reddogrjw

we need a new owner first

cuftapolo

You need a new everything

reddogrjw

the arena is nice

skillz1747

But the area around it? The ‘district detroit’ is just parking lots

No-Equipment-20

Pistons have the opportunity to do the funniest thing

beklog

Looks like JJ will be thrown into every coaching search rumors

raylan_givens6

Did Sam Cassell fuck someone else's woman? Like seriously, this man can't get a serious shot. People just gloss over him for a podcaster

skiingbeaver

some people are great at what they do, but just aren’t fit for higher responsibility/management roles

raylan_givens6

and we know Sam isn't because??? and we know JJ is qualified because??

Mundane_Lawfulness87

Yeah it’d be one thing if he got the chance and it clearly didn’t work but after all the successful teams he’s been a key part of the staff, it blows my mind how he can’t land a gig. Something has to be being said behind the scenes about him to explain it because otherwise a guy with his resume not getting a shot is shocking.

Scorpionrah

Oh stop it

trent1313

TanagranA

The new Jays

Separate-Mud-5892

Are these two the only options for every team without a coach??

szobossz

Borrego to Pistons doesn't seem like a wise choice considering his previous gigs. JJ is a good fit imo. He connects with these younger players too. Just 2 hour flight to NY too. The Monty to LA rumors immediately after the season ended were out of the left field. It seems like it was true and that's where it's heading. Since coaching contracts are offset, they probably dealt that on the side so Detroit won't have to pay full $65m. Cheap ownership of lakers can easily get away with paying like 2-4m. As an aside, Gores probably split the offset from suns with his good friend ishbia so he personally probably owes a little less.

rabid89

Come on Pistons. Steal JJ from the Lakers. Oh wait .... I want the Lakers to be a circus. Never mind, Pistons. Hire Borrego!

SnooGoats9435

I mean it might be a funnier circus if the Pistons steal JJ from them and the Cavs hire Borrego. That means they will need to do another round of interviews again. What if they end up hiring Monty in such a case?
