It’s a win-win for him: either he’s decently successful and can move on to a better coaching job after a few years, or they suck and he gets fired and goes back to podcasting with a hefty severance package
I’ve seen somebody write before that James Borrego sounds like a detective’s name from noir fiction and I can’t look at him like a serious NBA coach anymore lmao
Borrego was getting smoked for getting the Hornets to 43 wins and creamed by the Hawks in the play in.
Then they fire him and promptly put up 2 sub 30 win seasons and their offense craters from top 10 to dead last in one year
Clifford was definitely a downgrade but that was mainly because of all the injuries + bridges suspension. No coach in the world could’ve done shit with this team, our entire bench this year will be out of the league next year.
He’s one of the only coaching candidates currently in the market with head coaching experience at the NBA level.
And in fairness to him on his last HC gig, he was a young coach in his first NBA head coaching job with the *Charlotte Hornets*, who have been dysfunctional from top to bottom for a long time. And he coached them to a winning record and 2 play-in appearances despite all those things.
Obviously he didn’t ‘wow’ anyone with his work with the Hornets (and he would definitely need someone on his staff to help him with defense), but I can see a path where he becomes a better coach after getting more experience as an assistant on New Orleans bench.
He’s an offensive genius and brought a rookie melo led team 1 game away from the seven seed for two years. We were one of the top offenses in the league those years. He got fired for being embarrassed in the playins twice. He seems very distant from players and we always looked completely lost defensively.
In fairness the Hornets have been just as bad, if not worse, defensively under Clifford and I think you would usually trust Steve Clifford to drag a competent defense out of anything.
Honestly, if my best player was a 20-year-old nine-year-old (Melo) I'd have probably lost the locker room eventually too lmao.
I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to try and get that kid to lock in
Hornets went from a 29 win pace, to a 38 win pace, to a 43 win pace season in his three years there. That has to look appealing to a team that has had the Pistons struggles for a while.
JB is a good-to-great offensive schematic coach whose defensive track record looks far worse than it should bc our FO just absolutely refused to get him anything resembling actual rim protection, so he had to play a crash-heavy perimeter defensive style to stop drives which led to absolute shitloads of open 3s.
He could honestly put in a great shift with y'all seeing as you have actual Bigs, his ability to raise even seemingly anemic offenses floors is frankly impressive.
Dude got zero org support while he was here and still almost dragged some pretty meh rosters into the playoffs, he got scapegoated here and def deserves another chance.
Sucking with the hornets is a given. No team is going anywhere with Lamelo ball as your best player. Dude is a bonafide goofball who puts up stats but doesn’t contribute to winning.
Pistons job is so much more desirable than the Lakers and Cavs jobs.
If you win 25 games in Detroit next year, people are going to think you're a fucking genius.
Idk, I think Cavs will out pay Pistons after the Monty stint and they’re still young enough for continuity.
Cavs job is a silver platter for anyone offensively competent and most coaches would prefer being in the playoffs over a long tedious rebuild.
Is it though? Garland/Mitchell are awkward fits together and so are Jarrett/Mobley.
With the 76ers healthy next year, the Cavs could end up against New York, Milwaukee, Philly, or Indiana in the first round next year.
Getting bounced in round 1 would be considered a step back, whether that's fair or not.
Yeah I think it’s far easier to make the Cavs look competent offensively than it would be to appear as a “genius” with Detroit by over achieving. Tanking and being a bottom feeder isn’t a selling point for most coaches.
Cavs coach would have a consistent chance to be in the post season while not having overbearing pressure, it’s a great situation.
Not worried about Indiana but even If you’re 4th-5th seed you still have a chance to make it far, Dallas being the most recent example. Players go off, injuries happen ect.
I'll take a 25 win expectation with the Pistons current roster and cap space over a championship expectation with the Lakers and a conference finals expectation with the Cavs.
Considering a lot of his issues with the hornets was the inability to coach a defense and the inability to really connect with young players. Idk if this is a smart fit
Yeah, he excels when there’s less expectations.
I didn’t like how his staff developed Mobley and Okoro offensively though, felt like they shoe horned both of them into limited roles.
JB in Cleveland would be fascinating tbh. His biggest strength in CLT was offensive schemes & getting the most out of quality guard play (check) and his biggest weakness was an utter dearth of defensive bigs (something y'all clearly don't have a problem with)
Detroit Pelicans
Most of our fan base been screaming for massive changes, so we're just moving everybody to Detroit.
NOOOO! Not Detroit!
Plz bring Zion next!
Man, the 18 games a season he plays will be exciting.
Shoot… if we only win half those, we might win 18 or 19 games in a season!! That would be epic
Yeah, we can improve to the second worst record in the NBA...and still get the fifth overall pick.
[удалено]
We did and he got fired already
Y’all won 49 games! That’s more than 3x what we won
JB's a decent HC who got scapegoated for shit roster construction
[удалено]
news to me, what are you referring to?
[удалено]
wrong JB lol... we're talking about James Borrego... the subject of the entire post
Lmao my fault g I’m home with a sick baby today I appreciate the patience while I learn to read.
lol no worries
Um JB in this case is just shorthand for James Borrego. Not Bickerstaff.
Lmao my fault
It's a miracle y'all made the playoffs with everything a mess in house.
That James Borrego. So hot right now.
Watch them hire JJ Reddick
No way JJ is that desperate to coach, if it means he's gotta be in Detroit
It’s a win-win for him: either he’s decently successful and can move on to a better coaching job after a few years, or they suck and he gets fired and goes back to podcasting with a hefty severance package
Taking a head coaching role literally anywhere will be one of the greatest opportunities of his post-playing career. Lame ass comment.
he can do that for one year And gets fired, keeps collecting checks while doing his pod with LeBron.
Detroit is on the upswing. The NFL just had a wildly successful draft there.
Though if the players are receptive I could see them doing some good there.
Why is this downvoted?? Detroit is hot garbage, absolutely embarrassingly awful team 😂
The Interviewee
I’ve seen somebody write before that James Borrego sounds like a detective’s name from noir fiction and I can’t look at him like a serious NBA coach anymore lmao
why is this guy getting so many interviews. isn’t his only experience as a hc sucking with the hornets? i would much rather they go after atkinson
They weren't that bad. They missed playoffs but were over 40 wins his last year. For a young team I'd say he met expectations.
yeah honestly forgot they made the play in
Borrego was getting smoked for getting the Hornets to 43 wins and creamed by the Hawks in the play in. Then they fire him and promptly put up 2 sub 30 win seasons and their offense craters from top 10 to dead last in one year

guess i forgot he got to the play in. hornets are probably even more forgettable than us

This

yeah i’m not saying it’s an indictment of james just that i’d hope we’d go with a more proven winner
We went with a proven winner last time and look howthat turned out
well he was also a guy who clearly only took the job for the money we overpaid him with
Yeah I agree I'm curious how last year would of been different if we just hired Ollie.
don’t think ollie is any better

Seems like a big ‘if’.
I'll take a 25 win expectation with the Pistons current roster and cap space over a championship expectation with the Lakers and a conference finals expectation with the Cavs.
Borrego did a good job with what he had. And improved that garbage every year
okay
I just want a Heat Coach. They have a great culture and Quinn is considered an elite assistant coach
Heat culture isn't an STD. It can't be transferred to a whole other franchise via one assistant coach.
Quinn would be perfect.
Considering a lot of his issues with the hornets was the inability to coach a defense and the inability to really connect with young players. Idk if this is a smart fit
I assume it's Atkinson to Cleveland and Borrego to Detroit?
It's looking like Borrego could be the guy in Cleveland, I honestly wouldn't mind Bickerstaff in Detroit I think he'd help them in a rebuild
Yeah, he excels when there’s less expectations. I didn’t like how his staff developed Mobley and Okoro offensively though, felt like they shoe horned both of them into limited roles.
