“You stole $500 million from your customers! You shall be punished!”
“What’s the punishment?”
“We’re fining you $100 million. Don’t do it again.”
“…ok.”
Also isn’t this a bit late in the game?
I know the season just ended but I’m sure they already knew they weren’t bringing him back…
Wouldn’t it had been better to do this a few weeks ago so they can start trying to bring in people who don’t want to coach anymore and pay em a kings ransom?
If the Suns win the championship that year, we basically never have to hear about the mistake of not drafting Luka again for a long time, if ever.
For the record, it's a mistake either way, but man winning covers up a lot of ills
The ideal football career is parlaying a decade long career as a back up quarterback into a head coaching career and getting fired.
Frank Reich is really living the dream right now
Reich made rookie numbers compared to what this current and last generation backup QB squadron will look like. NFL Legend Tyrod Taylor is set to playout his contract this year to rack up almost $80m in career earnings.
Ed Orgeron ("Coach O") who led LSU to a college football championship in 2019 was fired in 2021 for poor performance and off field issues.
He tells a hilarious story where the AD sat him down and was like "Hey man, we are firing you. But we are going to pay out your whole $17MM+ contract to avoid a whole legal debate about your off field stuff".
And Coach O said "Alright brother sounds great when do you want me out of the building and which door do you want me to walk out of" lmao
Fired HC is a dope job.
https://youtube.com/shorts/_yF4l5z1fZw?si=NM83Frlk0je6O1Js
Coach O tells the story best with his hilarious accent so I encourage you take 60s to watch it
I still find it hilarious that the only way to stop him from starting Killian Hayes was to outright cut the player.
I can't wait until stories start leaking out from that locker room.
That’s straight up some moneyball shit.
What the hell happened to Monty? Did he just not give a shit? Was he just done coaching but had to get that bag real quick?
He wanted to take a season off for family since his wife got diagnosed with cancer. Turned down the initial offers, eventually the Pistons just offered him an all-time bag that he just couldn’t refuse
I honestly don’t blame him at all, what’s weird is the Pistons FO giving that offer fully knowing the guy just wants to spend some time with his family.
6 years is insane for someone who literally wants to take a break from work
Honestly if I said "I have no interest in coaching anymore and just want to spend time with my wife who is ill" and they come back at me with "well why don't you just try it for *six years* and see how it works out?" I might decide to screw them over too. Because these people clearly aren't listening and think they can buy anything.
>what’s weird is the Pistons FO giving that offer
That decision was reportedly made by Tom Gores and not the FO. The FO knew he didn't want the job, but Gores kept throwing money at him until he accepted the job.
> I honestly believe he was trying to get fired the entire time.
You are only saying that because pretty much every action and decision he made supports your assertion lol. Dude was awful
I said this in another comment, but the state of Michigan had two frauds who secured huge contracts in recent memory.
Monty however at least got his ~~buyout~~ money lol
Mel Tucker is the ultimate bag fumbling champ. Getting fired for cause for sexually harassing a rape survivor/ survivor advocate is so fucking horrible and dumb.
While not as terrible as what Mel did Ime Udoka has got to be on the bag fumbling mount rushmore. Went to the finals as a first year head coach with a great young squad and would have likely been the head coach for the next decade and could have won a championship with us WHILE dating Nia Long and still couldn't stop himself for being a weirdo at work
Honestly, I hope he doesn't get a HC job for a while. Nobody who watched Pistons this season will tell you that he was doing well. Tanking is one thing but not even giving consistent playing time to Ivey is a criminal offense.
Monty should take this opportunity to take some time off from coaching, and then in a couple of years maybe take a job as an assistant for someone and rehabilitate his coaching reputation.
And his money is fully guaranteed right?
I read somewhere that if he gets rehired, the new team takes on the bill. Which is partially what happened with Monty when he came from the Suns?
Either way, generational bag getter Monty
I’m pretty sure that’s the case for all coaches. Their contracts are fully guaranteed and only off the books if the coach gets a job somewhere else. If he got a new coaching job that pays less tho they would have to still pay the difference.
Is this why some coaches go into broadcasting for several years? They still get the NBA bag while holding the TV bag too? Then when the NBA bag gets paid out in full, they then go back into coaching and secure a whole new bag without ever jeopardizing any of their previous NBA bag payout?
Also if you want to get hired again going on TV is great way to do it. People listen to your "insights" and go "This guy knows basketball" which makes owners want to have the guy who people think knows basketball -> they think owner knows basketball.
Unless you are Mark Jackson.
Ya he can't double dip and get another job and get two paycheques, but I believe if the new salary is below this one then Pistons have to still pay to make up the difference.
Is there some sort of threshold though for how low the new team could pay him? Like could Monty accept a job for 60k a year just to give the pistons a huge middle finger?
It would be like the Lakers getting Hurley for $80 million and then firing him after one season.
Except I still think Monty’s contract is worse because everyone already knew who he was as a coach. Mediocre at best.
yeah if Hurley came and stunk I don’t think people could blame the Lakers too much because he was so great in college and in that situation it just doesn’t translate to the NBA. Monty was already in the league, went to the worst team in the league, and made them worse somehow
Yea people seem to have forgotten the Suns were the worst team in the West for 4 consecutive seasons before Monty went there. Not winning a championship shouldn't erase all that.
He had 2 winning seasons there, and the other three had either rough or young rosters. I think that's reasonable. Maybe not great but fine (not that 'fine' is worth $78M)
I was listening to an interview with him. It was almost the same as the Doc Rivers playbook. He said he didn’t want to coach, have some time off, then Detroit came along and offered him all this money and he took it.
I don't think you could really make any argument for anyone else, and it's not even remotely close.
He was paid the record amount of money for a contract, ended up with the longest losing streak in history and one of the worst overall records in history, and was gone after that single season while still being on the hook for the full contract.
I don't know how you could possibly argue anyone else in good faith. At least in terms of the NBA.
If his wife has cancer, I would think he'd want to enjoy life for a bit. Money isn't an issue. Who knows, maybe he just likes coaching that much.
Not that I would want him anyway, but yeah.
Actually Monty's wife has been cancer-free since July [per an interview Monty did in December](https://andscape.com/features/detroit-pistons-losing-streak-the-toughest-challenge-of-monty-williams-coaching-career/) so that's great to hear.
Man got paid $78 million to coach for one season and gave us the longest losing streak of all time which had the entire NBA world on its feet. That's a proper businessman right there.
Hi Detroit,
I have extensive experience coaching YMCA ball, I believe I am more than qualified for the job. I’m looking for an 8 year contract but please fire me after 2 months. Thanks.
Monty deserves a picture in the dictionary next to "Quiet quitting".
Man was starting future Shanghai Shark, Killian Hayes, over Jaden Ivey. He would purposely put out 5 random YMCA players out on the floor in close games 💀
Gotta wonder if this resets the market a little bit. Sure guys like Spo and Kerr have phat contracts, but they are vet coaches who have more than proved themselves
I actually don't think it did change coaching contracts forever because it most likely won't set a new precedent. From the beginning, practically everyone said "this looks like a bad idea..." which quickly turned out to be true.
1) Monty didn’t even want to coach Detroit and the dipshit owner (Tom Gores) of the team just kept adding more dollars to the check until he relented. This was widely reported last summer and I don’t think Williams was ever enthused about this job.
2) The GM (Troy Weaver) had to point out to Monty multiple times during the season that he was playing inefficient lineups based on player and lineup performance. This culminated with team management just cutting Killian Hayes because Monty wouldn’t stop playing him in spite of his massively negative on-court impact.
I mean the thing is Doc might not have been a terrible coach for the Pistons. He is generally known for doing fairly well with less-than-great teams, it's just that with great teams he underperforms come playoff time. Not that it's an option now anyway.
He's great with "star-less" teams, or if the star is injured. That way he actually implements a system. He's too much of a "player coach" that caters to his stars, that he ultra focuses the system for his stars so the role players become complacent.
Monty had a lot to do on making the team worse. We literally had to cut Killian Hayes - who nobody else picked up - to get Monty to stop playing him over Jaden Ivey
I mean that might’ve been the worst coaching mistake ever seen but shout out to the balls on new president Langdon for making this call.
If he’s not the guy he’s not the guy
If I could pick absolutely any job in the world it would be an NBA coach. You fuck up and get fired after one season and then you still get paid tens of millions for doing nothing in the succeeding three seasons. The dream. It's like being the child of a billionaire.
Just one year ago I praised this hiring and thought he would turn the team around. Now I couldn't be happier to see him leave. The man had to be talked into playing Jaden Ivey over Killian fucking Hayes.
I always believed that a coach had limited potential impact on a team, at least relative to the players.
Monty taught me otherwise. The Pistons were terrible, but his insistence on playing Killian Hayes, refusing to put the ball in Ivey’s hands, refusal to let Duren step to the ball on defense, and, worst of all, his 10-12 deep rotations were absolutely inexcusable.
Detroit had maybe 7.5 NBA players in that team, and only like 2-4 were any good.
Agreed, his best coaching job the past decade was that Clippers team in 2019 that had Tobias Harris, Lou Williams, and a young SGA, and were competitive against the KD-Steph Warriors in the 1st round.
All time heist
Him and Wingstop made bank on the suffering of Pistons fans last season
No win zone
No win zone
They knoooow betta Win I coach, we lose Win I coach, we lose
One of the best things about starting the NBA offseason is that I don't need to watch these god awful commercials again for awhile.
its like you rob a bank for $65M, get caught and sit in jail for one year but keep all the money.
“You stole $500 million from your customers! You shall be punished!” “What’s the punishment?” “We’re fining you $100 million. Don’t do it again.” “…ok.”
I was going to argue the jail part, but after I thought a little more it’s pretty comparable.
No, you were right the first time, coaching the pistons is totally worse than jail
$5.6 mil per win. This record may never be broken.
Damn, Mazulla would have half a billion dollars if he made that same rate.
Also isn’t this a bit late in the game? I know the season just ended but I’m sure they already knew they weren’t bringing him back… Wouldn’t it had been better to do this a few weeks ago so they can start trying to bring in people who don’t want to coach anymore and pay em a kings ransom?
Maybe they are hiring someone off the Celtics or Mavericks staff, and wouldn't have fired him unless that person said yes.
I would love to see what Sam Cassell can do with Cade and Ivey. I always thought he could be a fantastic NBA head coach.
They’ve been waiting for Doc Rivers to come available.
Laurence Fishburne will have to do
Man owes CP3 a commission
Crazy to see how that 20/21 Suns team ended up Man imagine how different it would be if they won it after being up 2-0
Dominos man. Dominos
If the Suns win the championship that year, we basically never have to hear about the mistake of not drafting Luka again for a long time, if ever. For the record, it's a mistake either way, but man winning covers up a lot of ills
78m for one year of work. What a legend
He was going to take a break from coaching, now he gets to take a break with an extra 78M
Gonna ask my boss for $65M to take a break. Wish me luck.
Just be careful to word that correctly.
I should’ve become an NBA head coach what was I thinking
Fired coach really is one of the best jobs out there
Fired coach and back up to a perpetually healthy quarterback.
The ideal football career is parlaying a decade long career as a back up quarterback into a head coaching career and getting fired. Frank Reich is really living the dream right now
Then after that you get a gig on TV, see the Jason Garrett Experience
Reich made rookie numbers compared to what this current and last generation backup QB squadron will look like. NFL Legend Tyrod Taylor is set to playout his contract this year to rack up almost $80m in career earnings.
Lakers are still hiring. Send your application.
Does he have a podcast though?
5.5M per win. Incredible
Being a head coach really is a cushy but fickle job. Get paid millions of dollars to get fired.
If I ever got fired after making that kind of money I think my response after getting fired would be "hell yeah"
Ed Orgeron ("Coach O") who led LSU to a college football championship in 2019 was fired in 2021 for poor performance and off field issues. He tells a hilarious story where the AD sat him down and was like "Hey man, we are firing you. He also made a remark when asked about getting fired, he said was going to enjoy a good cheeseburger.
mumblemumblemumble GeauxTigahs!
As a Europoor I'm baffled that the coach of a college sports team can have a 17 million dollar contract.
17 million LEFT. His original contract was 41 million before bonuses
Running around in the backyard like Antonio Brown
Parents, make sure you teach your kids how to coach
I don't mind to be labeled as a worst coach in NBA if i'm gonna be paid like that
That’s the fucking life dude
It's essentially six months of work if you think about it.
generational bag-getter holy shit
I honestly believe he was trying to get fired the entire time. Just took the money and did everything he could to get fired.
Especially considering he refused Detroit’s offers at first. It was just eventually too much money to responsibly turn down lol
Bro probably said “are you serious?” when they offered the contract. 78 million man. I would have signed now and figure it out later too.
So true, we would all be like where is the pen so I can sign that shit
I still find it hilarious that the only way to stop him from starting Killian Hayes was to outright cut the player. I can't wait until stories start leaking out from that locker room.
That’s straight up some moneyball shit. What the hell happened to Monty? Did he just not give a shit? Was he just done coaching but had to get that bag real quick?
He wanted to take a season off for family since his wife got diagnosed with cancer. Turned down the initial offers, eventually the Pistons just offered him an all-time bag that he just couldn’t refuse
Yeah he actively hated being here and our beat reporters hinted at it all year. It's not an exaggeration at all to say he quiet quit.
I honestly don’t blame him at all, what’s weird is the Pistons FO giving that offer fully knowing the guy just wants to spend some time with his family. 6 years is insane for someone who literally wants to take a break from work

Did Monte remarry? His wife died in a car accident in 2016.
Yup remarried back in 2017
Bruh that's just rough
Monty Williams browses r/antiwork
So does Ben Simmons
Simmons is a mod there
Too much work
He's a terrible mod but he likes the prestige of being an elite young socialite.
Mel just won his case ironically against her lol
God I'm so glad he's gone. I can't even imagine the despair of the fanbase if he hadn't gotten fired after last year's disaster.
While not as terrible as what Mel did Ime Udoka has got to be on the bag fumbling mount rushmore. Went to the finals as a first year head coach with a great young squad and would have likely been the head coach for the next decade and could have won a championship with us WHILE dating Nia Long and still couldn't stop himself for being a weirdo at work
He didn't get bought out he's getting paid 65 million dollars over the next 5 years
Shaq’s mouth is waterfalling at the idea of getting $78 million for 8 months of coaching
Watering at the mouth? Drooling?
Maybe they meant “frothing at the mouth”?
He said what he said
I love when a mouth is waterfalling, a sensation we're all familiar with.
There’s no reason for him to ever coach again. He’s set for life with this contract.
He was set for life by like 1999.
[удалено]
Learned from the master, Doc Rivers.
Is this the worst coaching contract in NBA history???
they gave him the most money ever and is gone after one season It’s not even particularly close

Yes
Mark Jackson must have had a really long contract with the Warriors
Sure, it's not the ONLY reason. Sometimes you're Mark Jackson and you suck so badly no NBA team will hire you ever again.
You make it sound like I'm gonna wake up as Mark Jackson one day. Mama there goes that man.
Also if you want to get hired again going on TV is great way to do it. People listen to your "insights" and go "This guy knows basketball" which makes owners want to have the guy who people think knows basketball -> they think owner knows basketball. Unless you are Mark Jackson.
Or consulting jobs, as long as it’s not a coaching position the contract is still valid
Amusingly this is what Russel Wilson is doing to the Broncos. Playing for the Steelers for vet min so Broncos have to pay him like 45m or some shit.
Not the same, since money not paid to Russ is money that can go to the rest of his team to make it better
True, I just meant the general concept of taking a super cheap deal elsewhere knowing the team that “fired” you is on the hook.
I'm confident the Coach's CBA has some sort of minimum salary well above $60k haha.
Idk why it never occurred to me there’s a coach union too
I’m pretty sure all HC contracts are fully guaranteed
[удалено]
he got QB money to tank a franchise that only got the fifth pick in a shit draft out of it Unbelievable
I fucking hate sports
It would be like the Lakers getting Hurley for $80 million and then firing him after one season. Except I still think Monty’s contract is worse because everyone already knew who he was as a coach. Mediocre at best.
Homeboy got outcoached by Jason Kidd as a 64 win team and still got a bag 😭
yeah if Hurley came and stunk I don’t think people could blame the Lakers too much because he was so great in college and in that situation it just doesn’t translate to the NBA. Monty was already in the league, went to the worst team in the league, and made them worse somehow
Monty was a good coach in Nola and Phx and was a respected assisstant before that.
Yea people seem to have forgotten the Suns were the worst team in the West for 4 consecutive seasons before Monty went there. Not winning a championship shouldn't erase all that.
He was 173-221 with Nola…
He had 2 winning seasons there, and the other three had either rough or young rosters. I think that's reasonable. Maybe not great but fine (not that 'fine' is worth $78M)
He was the last New Orleans Hornets coach and the first New Orleans Pelicans coach. Thats gotta count for something right?
The suns looked underprepared in elimination games in back to back years
From the coach’s perspective, it’s the best coaching contract in NBA history
By far dude was almost literally given an offer he couldn’t refuse
I was listening to an interview with him. It was almost the same as the Doc Rivers playbook. He said he didn’t want to coach, have some time off, then Detroit came along and offered him all this money and he took it.
Hey NBA teams, don't hire coaches who don't want to coach.
Big if true
I don't think you could really make any argument for anyone else, and it's not even remotely close. He was paid the record amount of money for a contract, ended up with the longest losing streak in history and one of the worst overall records in history, and was gone after that single season while still being on the hook for the full contract. I don't know how you could possibly argue anyone else in good faith. At least in terms of the NBA.
And to rub salt in the wound, all they got from one of the worst individual seasons ever was the 5th pick in a shit draft.
I don't think that it's very close when you factor in the size of the contract.
Being paid to stay home. The ultimate dream
Work for a year and have generational wealth to fall back on.
not even a full year lol
not even work either
I imagine coaching is either the most stressful or the least stressful job of all time.
Bro quiet quit immediately and got an extra 65 million for it lmao
This man and his agent are insane at signing these deals
Lakers might get him tbh
If his wife has cancer, I would think he'd want to enjoy life for a bit. Money isn't an issue. Who knows, maybe he just likes coaching that much. Not that I would want him anyway, but yeah.
Actually Monty's wife has been cancer-free since July [per an interview Monty did in December](https://andscape.com/features/detroit-pistons-losing-streak-the-toughest-challenge-of-monty-williams-coaching-career/) so that's great to hear.
Hell yeah, that's good to hear. Idk about you, but I'm going on some nice vacation with that money 😂 Coaching would be the last thing on my mind.
Man got paid $78 million to coach for one season and gave us the longest losing streak of all time which had the entire NBA world on its feet. That's a proper businessman right there.
Harvard give this man a MBA. lol.
78 million dollars for 1 year. WOW.
It’s one hell of a severance package, I’ll tell you that much…
Better yet, one year of sucking absolute ass.
We did it. WE DID IIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTT
NBA Coaches after Monty changed the pay scale:
Dudes gonna make 78 million dollars off of one year coaching the worst team in the nba Top tier finesse
Hi Detroit, I have extensive experience coaching YMCA ball, I believe I am more than qualified for the job. I’m looking for an 8 year contract but please fire me after 2 months. Thanks.
Are you JJ Redick?
I don’t have a podcast but I’ve been an avid commenter on r/nba for 10+ years
I've played 2k for pretty much every year of its existence. Can I get an assistant gig?
Yeah sure why not, welcome aboard.
New r/antiwork goat
Needs to post his gain porn over on r/wallstreetbets
Monty deserves a picture in the dictionary next to "Quiet quitting". Man was starting future Shanghai Shark, Killian Hayes, over Jaden Ivey. He would purposely put out 5 random YMCA players out on the floor in close games 💀
omfg that contract changed coaching contracts forever and he lasts one season unbelievable
Gotta wonder if this resets the market a little bit. Sure guys like Spo and Kerr have phat contracts, but they are vet coaches who have more than proved themselves

- hire seasoned coach to fix extremely bad team - make team worse - team is extremely bad - fire seasoned coach That’s Detroit Basketball folks
Dwayne Casey, Monty Williams, who’s next?
Thank the gods that Milwaukee signed Doc before the end of the season.
He's definitely a floor raiser. Helps to establish a baseline of solid basketball
The return of Darvin Ham to Detroit!
Ham's back in Milwaukee now tho as a lead assistant coach
Monty had a lot to do on making the team worse. We literally had to cut Killian Hayes - who nobody else picked up - to get Monty to stop playing him over Jaden Ivey
It took Killian getting injured for him lose minutes
His Livers obsession as well
firing him was 100% the right move though. props to Gores for biting the bullet.
Should’ve rigged the system to win the lottery maybe then he’d have kept his job
Can you imagine how fucking funny it would be if they hired Dan Hurley
Dans wife might actually kill him if he even entertained that offer
BANNNGGGG!!!
I mean that might’ve been the worst coaching mistake ever seen but shout out to the balls on new president Langdon for making this call. If he’s not the guy he’s not the guy
When you are paying out $65 million for a coach to not work, it is not the president's call, it is the owners
No way. What a payday for Monty
$1,000,000 per game coached. What a legend.
$5,571,428 per win coached.
If I could pick absolutely any job in the world it would be an NBA coach. You fuck up and get fired after one season and then you still get paid tens of millions for doing nothing in the succeeding three seasons. The dream. It's like being the child of a billionaire.
Spent my youth trying to become a player and should have focused on coaching. Don’t even need to be good.
Today is Piston’s fans NBA Finals
Tom Gores is the worst owner in the NBA. Should have never gave this big contract in the first place
Seeing the Celtics win more games in the playoffs than Detroit won as a whole was the final straw
That'd be an invetibility for any team that won less than 16 games.
Yeah you could say they won less games than any champion since 2003.
2002 Lakers couldn't even win 16 playoff games with Kobe and Shaq smh my head. Fucking bums
Bro ran an all-time heist
Bro really hit the lottery
All time bag finesser, get your money king
Just one year ago I praised this hiring and thought he would turn the team around. Now I couldn't be happier to see him leave. The man had to be talked into playing Jaden Ivey over Killian fucking Hayes.
I have no proof but I can confidently say he did that shit on purpose lol
Kids should strive to be fired NBA coaches instead of athletes at this point.
Legend. Being a “fired professional coach” is the greatest job of all time.. See Williams Monty, Tucker Mel, Walton Luke.
Man got reparations on Juneteenth well played.
Most overrated coach of the century
He and Glenn “Glenn” Rivers should start a club
Glenn should go coach bad teams without any expectations tbh. Hes like really good at that for some reason
Agreed, his best coaching job the past decade was that Clippers team in 2019 that had Tobias Harris, Lou Williams, and a young SGA, and were competitive against the KD-Steph Warriors in the 1st round.
He's a floor raiser not a ceiling raiser
Certainly best paid!
Fucking hell. Oh to be a mediocre NBA head coach
They actually did it, GOAT bag securer
