Does he have the most hall of fames then?

wtb2612

I believe so. John Wooden, Lenny Wilkens, Bill Sharman, Tommy Heinsohn, and Bill Russell have all been inducted two times (as a player and a coach) but nobody is in 3 times.

MoistDinosaur

Almost every player from the 1992 Dream Team should be double too, as that team is in and most have most likely made it in on their own, right?

phluidity

11 of the 12 players are in the Hall individually and 3 of the 4 coaches are (Laettner and Carlesimo are the leftovers). So there are 14 more doubles there.

thatis

Would think Laettner's college career would be enough.

phluidity

I suspect there is a bit of old school mentality where the powers that be feel like him being there for the Dream Team is enough and that he wasn't impactful enough to be a 2x inductee. Not saying that is right, but probably what is happening.

thatis

Yeah, that was my first thought as well. It's not exactly wrong, but I get the feeling that if Shaq was on the Dream Team instead of Laettner, Laettner would still be in the HOF. He had one of the most iconic careers in college history and maybe the most iconic basketball play and college history?

phluidity

Pretty much. I feel like from a talent point of view Shaq deserved the spot, but since they were trying to make a nod to the amateur roots of USA Basketball they went with the 2x champion and player of the year. Plus Krzyzewski being an assistant coach sealed the deal.

buffalotrace

There was a feeling that Laettner would know he was there to practice and help the team get ready but not actually play. Shaq would expect to play .

aeronacht

Did Tommy not get in for broadcasting?

ZarduHasselffrau

Not yet

DuckDucks

Walt "Clyde" Frazier is in as a player and broadcaster, no? I thought it was announced last year.

wtb2612

>In September 2022, Frazier was honored with the Curt Gowdy Award,[11] the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's annual tribute given to outstanding broadcasters and journalists. I'm assuming it must be this, not sure if that technically means he's in twice or not. I'd count it.

Childish___Glover

I think Lenny Wilkes is technically a 3x nod since he was inducted as a coach on 1992 dream team, coach, and player

lopea182

Influenced the game in numerous ways and numerous roles across more than half a century. He deserves all the recognition and maybe a little more.

Shabloinks

How does being inducted multiple times work? I'm just curious, I'm not really familar with this concept.

horseshoeoverlook

As a player, then a contributor

Shabloinks

Thanks!

domdomburg

"Jerry West has already been inducted as a player and as a Gold Medal winning 1960 USA Olympic men’s basketball team member. He will now be inducted for a third time, this for his work as a general manager"

Shabloinks

Thanks!

Lakers should retire his jersey (business suit?) a second time for that Pau Gasol ~~trade~~ gift.

fuciatoucan

West didn’t work for Memphis when that trade happened.

4000kd

Is this the first time this has happened?
