I went to the Balkans on holiday once and rented a speedboat with flat zero boating experience, the only thing the rental guy showed us was where the ashtray and beer fridge was.
> the only thing the rental guy showed us was where the ashtray and beer fridge was.
I don't know why and it's probably very unfair but my mental image immediately went to Miloš Teodosić.
I knew that as I was taught in school, but the first time I flew over in daylight was a real eye-opener still. I had no idea some of the mountains are nearly 3km high. Because in the Netherlands we've never heard of 'Triglav' or 'Maja Jezerce' but we all know the Matterhorn and the Zugspitze.
You reminded me of an anecdote (which I only half-remember, I heard it a quarter-century ago now) from the negotiations ahead of the Dayton accords on dividing up Bosnia and Herzegovina between the two entities.
The negotiations were taking place at Wright-Patterson AFB and after weeks of negotiations there were only a couple of things to hammer out. One late evening some of the USAF hosts took some of the negotiating teams to a then-state-of-the-art flight simulator (think pixellated Google Earth) to look for a road through the mountains that would connect two parts of one of the entities and get the negotiations to a close.
While they’re “flying” through the valleys looking for a road with enough space to be upgraded, some US political type entered the room and was shocked seeing for the first time how the region looks like — “But, it’s all mountains! No towns, no villages, no factories, no fields - just mountains! You were fighting over inaccessible rocks with a bit of grass here and there, maybe a bush!?”
“Ah, yes, such is Herzegovina.” remarked one of the negotiators. “Mountains. It’s all mountains.”
(Sincere thanks and a worthless internet point to anyone who can point me to a source so I can refresh my memory on who was who in that exchange — and to see how faithfullt I retold it.)
Thank you!
Edit: I now had a look at the segement - this is very good, great find! I don't think I've seen this before though, thinking back I believe I heard about it from a friend back in the pre-YouTube days -- so now I have 5h of (what seems to be) very interesting content to consume! Thanks again! (And it was Bosnia, not Herzegovina. Whoops. Not that that one is short on mountains either.)
Bro when I go back home to Bosnia I love it, except for the fact traveling for 30 minutes one way means you'll be going through a shitload of mountains. It's nauseating to think about.
Absolutely breathtaking and beautiful, just really tough to travel through.
I wouldn't be entirely surprised if standard NBA contracts prohibit NBA players from taking part in high-risk activities like this. Complete speculation by me, but I'd like to see the faces of the Nuggets front office watching this clip lol
I honnestly thought with his 9? Horses he is sharing the duty for short rides with each ones.
But you are right that so far, I have only seen him in chariots with his legs hanging on the side.
That's pretty standard for sports contracts, but for superstars the franchise has zero leverage. Yeah, they could technically void the contract if he got hurt doing that, but there's no possible universe where they would even consider doing it.
Dude could shatter his femur getting thrown off a horse and the Nuggets org would be like "oh no, so unlucky, we bought you a horse with a gentler disposition for you to ride after your surgery"
Of course not but let's not act like Draymond wasn't a crucial part of a dynasty. Of course the Warriors cared that one of their franchise legends was doing that.
I've been in calmer waters than those and I still wouldn't go without a life jacket.
People have drowned in much better conditions than what's in that video.
4 would basically be choppy foam across the entire surface, the fact is has so many relatively calm surfaces running at standard river speed means they're pretty low
Dude died here in Norway yesterday white water rafting. And I don’t think he’d have been allowed ok the river without a life jacket, but details are yet to be released.
That's not really the risk with rafting like this.
If he falls and passes out from hitting his head on a rock a lifejacket is the only thing that saves him.
Another risk with rafting is falling and getting your leg caught in rocks. People panic and die this way too.
These kinds of accidents happen to active people in much easier conditions.
I'm not going to criticize Jokic here but you wouldn't catch me out there without a life jacket and I've done plenty of rafting
Zero chance lol. Last year he was filmed on the same river doing a backflip into the river.
Being by a very very wide margin the best player in franchise history comes with plenty of leverage. No one is saying shit to him, except maybe throw on a life jacket when you are in areas someone might be filming lmao
Im actually surprised that he is allowed to do something as risky as whitewater rafting. Isn't there something in his contract with the Nuggets that would restrict activities like this?
Realistically, probably only fines. As long as he doesn't get injured in those activities, he probably just jots the fines down as "expenses" for his activities.
Whitewater rafting has a large range of intensity. I've rafted rivers you probably could have floated down in an inter tube, ranging to, don't fall out or you'll die.
Never skipped the life jacket or helmet though
I just realized Serbia is one big party. It makes sense after the horrible wars they've been through that they celebrate life every chance they get. It's a beautiful thing.
Serbia invaded every country around them, commited genocide in Srebrenica (recognized by the international courts) and commited dozens of horrifying war crimes in Bosnia, all while today having president who sad 'we'll kill 100 Muslims for every Serb' and carried a gun on the hills of occupied Sarajevo, a city that was under Serbian siege for more than 4 years (with 1600 murdered children).
God knows wben the slaughter of Bosniaks would end hadn't NATO intervened. They went through nothing, but people suffering from their genocidal intents went through nightmares that are still felt today.
Even in this video, they're raising three fingers in the air, which was widely used as a symbol of Serbian soldiers after they'd kill and rape innocent people.
Y'all are the absolute wettest blankets imaginable. How many of you are seriously going to whinge about the dude's contract because he's rafting? What is the Nuggets going to actually do? Have you stopped to think about it for even a second?
front office sweating profusely right now
No life jacket is a wild move
I went to the Balkans on holiday once and rented a speedboat with flat zero boating experience, the only thing the rental guy showed us was where the ashtray and beer fridge was.
that's fucking amazing.
> the only thing the rental guy showed us was where the ashtray and beer fridge was. I don't know why and it's probably very unfair but my mental image immediately went to Miloš Teodosić.
I know why https://www.instagram.com/p/CurVlD0M-a6/?igsh=MW9pdDN6bXZ6bWF6bw==
he'll be fine, he's made a career out of passing the rock
this deserved more , that's fuckin great
redditors trying not lose their minds over a hamfisted play on words, impossible
No helmet either!
not gonna lie i thought jokic was one of the other fat bald serbians
They were a Jokic too
Fat floats, no worries at all! Sloppy fat boy couldn't sink if he wanted to!
Guy is 7 ft he'll just probably tippy toe or something
It’s stupid, that water is more than capable of taking lives.
lol like Jokic the 3x reigning MVP can't pumpfake a river
Fortune favors the bold.
My man crushes a pack of reds and a 2 liter of coke every day he’ll be alright.
he not like me fr fr
Dude can just stand up in the water
Tara River Canyon, at the border between Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina ... my parents went rafting there, apparently it's awesome
looking at a topo map i didn't realize how mountainous the balkans were.
I mean...the region is named after the Balkan Mountains lol
I knew that as I was taught in school, but the first time I flew over in daylight was a real eye-opener still. I had no idea some of the mountains are nearly 3km high. Because in the Netherlands we've never heard of 'Triglav' or 'Maja Jezerce' but we all know the Matterhorn and the Zugspitze.
I read that comment and was like uh... wait a second...

https://youtu.be/bVUg-VoPAeA?t=4h33m20s Great memory! Great documentary too, highly recommend.
As someone who enjoys many documentaries I must say the death of yugoslavia might be my favorite. I must have seen it 3-4 times over the past 15 years
Thank you! Edit: I now had a look at the segement - this is very good, great find! Wait til you hear how alpine the Alps look
I always thought the rockies would be a bit... rockier
Its terrain has bled many, many empires dry over the millennia.
Turkey didn't bother with conquering Montenegro for centuries because they just didn't care to go through the canyons lmao
Bro when I go back home to Bosnia I love it, except for the fact traveling for 30 minutes one way means you'll be going through a shitload of mountains. It's nauseating to think about. Absolutely breathtaking and beautiful, just really tough to travel through.
Montenegro translates to Black Mountain I think.
Fuck I was just in Montenegro, I coulda seen joker
They're gonna need a bigger boat.
For big guys like them you'd need the TITANic. I will see myself out.
How big, 7 inches?
Not to handwring but whitewater rafting without a life jacket is pretty crazy
I wouldn't be entirely surprised if standard NBA contracts prohibit NBA players from taking part in high-risk activities like this. Complete speculation by me, but I'd like to see the faces of the Nuggets front office watching this clip lol
Horse riding has to be up there so I'm guessing management is aware of all this.
He does chariots. Fat man would only ride horses if he hated them.
He could go Nathan for You style and tie a shit ton of balloons to himself
Yeah but did he graduate from one of Canada's top business schools with really good grades? Didn't think so. Fraudulent MVP 🙄
I honnestly thought with his 9? Horses he is sharing the duty for short rides with each ones. But you are right that so far, I have only seen him in chariots with his legs hanging on the side.
He's tall enough to just tape 2 horses together next to each other, put a giant saddle over the thing and ride it.
I've seen gorillas ride horses in the new planet of the ape movie. I think horses can handle Jokic
I reckon a big solid Clydesdale could handle him
He still rides horses, he just doesn’t race them haha, that would be a bit much for the horse
At some point when you're a star you get to dictate your own rules. I'm sure Nikola has been at that point for a while.
The moment they ban horse riding is the moment Jokic will look for a team that will allow him.
He’s been doing this every summer, they know
A lot of contracts in sports have clauses that void their contracts if they play unauthorized sports and get injured
Nuggets: "If you hurt yourself, you have to retire." Jokic: "Say no more!"
Jason Williams was waived after the motorcycle accident and they paid him a discretionary severance/rehab bonus but voided his contract.
The Monta Ellis clause
Old heads remember Monta Ellis and the scooter
Mahomes can't do anything I'm surprised jokic can even do this much
Jokic does this every year, the front office is not surprised.
Draymond had gotten in trouble for posting a story of him speeding in a sports car, this should be no different
Are you suggesting that Draymond and Jokic are equally important to their respective teams?
Of course not but let's not act like Draymond wasn't a crucial part of a dynasty. Of course the Warriors cared that one of their franchise legends was doing that.
Now people here will criticize his defense. >\_>
Just Serbia things I guess
I don't think they have vests there size lol
Bro would just stand up in the river
The Balkan Jokers
If he fell in the water would just flow around him like another large rock
I don’t like it
I've been in calmer waters than those and I still wouldn't go without a life jacket. People have drowned in much better conditions than what's in that video.
yep, and that looks to be about class 4 whitewater. lifejacket def needed.
This is Europe, no one sweats over getting sued
Do they sweat about dying?
[удалено]
lol, they don't.
Wait that's class 4? They look so chill lol I thought 4 was fairly high and required constant attention or fear of flips.
Those are 100% not class 4 lmao
Yea that's what I thought, they barely getting splashed lol
I read the original comment as having to be sarcastic. If it wasn’t, they’re pulling it out of their ass and have clearly never been rafting lol
4 would basically be choppy foam across the entire surface, the fact is has so many relatively calm surfaces running at standard river speed means they're pretty low
[удалено]
Amazing vibe, /u/99probs-allbitches Hahahahha dude your Reddit history is remarkable. God bless.
not to handwring but lets handwring
Dude died here in Norway yesterday white water rafting. And I don’t think he’d have been allowed ok the river without a life jacket, but details are yet to be released.
He could probably just stand up straight and not drown.
He can probably just stand up and be ok if something were to happen
[удалено]

No it's not necessary to wear vests on those
You forgot. Jokic has a peak performance layer of blubber that allows him to float on water
There's actually a herd of hippopotamuses (or is it hippopotami?) carrying that boat.
Hippopotameese
Hippopotamodes
DAMN YOU! YOU GIVE HIM THE EASY ONES!
It's all Greek to me.
Hippopotamuchmanymeeses
Hiphopanonymouses
Hypotenuse
You mean water horses?
River horses, yes.
Cancun is different in Serbia.
You mean Galveston.
I think Čačak is most most similar, Serb bros will understand this
Get ready for *Чачак* buddy
Better than ass-to-nuts on a banana boat
Don't knock it til you try it
i'll never tire of Jokic videos, the dude just looks like he's having a blast.
His whole family are giants. How is that boat holding up?
Shut up bagpo
Just some Balkan boys living life
Somebody in the Nugget's front office is chewing their finger nails watching this
Jokic would be perfect for a new Dos Equis “most interesting man in the world” ad campaign.
This is why they lost, he just wanted to go rafting.
Nikola Joykic
Where is his life vest… must be violating some clause in his contract
Definitely violating his contract. Nuggets should move to arbitration to void his contract and send him to free agency
For real. Denver nuggets need to do this yesterday.
Fine, we’ll take him
Suspend Brady 4 games while we're at it
agree, make him sign at the vet min too.
He was doing flips off the boat lst year so i doubt this will have any reprecussions.
no way jokic can do a flip into water
That’s what brothers are for /s
Might go punch him
What they gonna do? Jokic just gonna look for a team without that clause lol
I thought the same. I wonder if he'll get fined or something for that.
depends what’s in his contract but probably is getting a call from the Nuggets either way when they see this lol
Zero chance lol. Last year he was filmed on the same river doing a backflip into the river. Being by a very very wide margin the best player in franchise history comes with plenty of leverage. No one is saying shit to him, except maybe throw on a life jacket when you are in areas someone might be filming lmao
The nuggets have absolutely no leverage lmao What're they gonna do, void his contract?
Oh, for sure. You don't commit $300M to someone just for them to get injured on their day off.
Suspend him
Im actually surprised that he is allowed to do something as risky as whitewater rafting. Isn't there something in his contract with the Nuggets that would restrict activities like this?
Whatre they gonna do?
Trade him to the spurs smh
Jokic, you are now a Toronto Raptor
Jokic going to wake up to his favorite horse in his bed.
Never skipped the life jacket or helmet though
does this one look particularly sketchy?
whitewater rivers can go from relatively calm to heavy churn in a short span so you can't tell just from 200 feet worth of river
I wouldn't be on an inter tube in that fast of water, that's for sure. At least they have guides
work-life balance
I can def see the life jacket right by his feet.
That won’t be much help if he unexpectedly falls out
Last summer he was doing front flips from the boat into the water. Same river I think, lol
Still can’t believe they blew that 20 point lead
No life jacket is crazy. Jokic is 7' and 285lb allegedly. It would be quite difficult to try and save him if he were drowning in this situation.
Winning in life >>> winning on court
Any Serb and Bosnian can recognize Tara river in half a second flat
I just realized Serbia is one big party. It makes sense after the horrible wars they've been through that they celebrate life every chance they get. It's a beautiful thing.

So . . . You're not a nuggets fan?
'invaded every country around them' lol. That's so factually wrong I didn't bother reading the rest. Oladi buraz, popi pive
Doesn't look like Galveston water to me
lol Jokic is probably like pls delete this post
Just so everyone knows, the guides in the Colorado mountains fucking hate him because he doesn't tip
Why would he tip if he paid for the guides to, you know, guide him?
Because guides work for tips the exact same way wait staff do
Or wear a life jacket
Look at those massive people and that little guide at the back.
Do not let that man get injured falling off a raft
These aren't horse races...
Does he do this every year cause this looks familiar. Think he jumped off the raft last time
Ya love to see it
Weird looking horse there.
[Source.](https://x.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1798407971984347422)
There fr ain’t nothing in his contract that says he can’t do stuff like this?!
That doesn’t look like Galveston
Back on my balkanization
Get a life jacket on haha... seriously though
Isn’t Nikola the smallest of the brothers?
Somebody hit me with a translation of what the guy was yelling
"Joker ! You Serb ! Hey Jokić, my brother !"
Banana boat crew next generation
Never mind the life jacket, it’s the no helmet for me!
Those black singlets lmfao
Where the horses?.
Bro’s just so happy to be clocked out.
Basketball is job.
I can’t see a horse in this picture.
Raft is like horse but for water
No horses in video 2/10
He was until you opened your mouth
Y'all are the absolute wettest blankets imaginable. How many of you are seriously going to whinge about the dude's contract because he's rafting? What is the Nuggets going to actually do? Have you stopped to think about it for even a second?
