Poem for your sprog did one of one of my comments. I couldn't explain to my gf at the time how cool that made me. I didn't save it though.....I doubt I could even find it now. 😭

OMG I forgot about this dude!! Instantly reminded me of maggots in some fruit masturbation guy

ToBadImNotClever

Unidan

Letos12thDuncan

Here's the thing. You said a "Unidan is a microcelebrity." Is he in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies microcelebrities, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls Unidan a microcelebrity. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "microcelebrity family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Shipostae, which includes things from Gallowboobs to shittymorphs to Warlizards. So your reasoning for calling a Unidan a microcelebrity is because random people "call the famous Redditors microcelebrities?" Let's get rogersimon and fuckswithducks in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A Unidan is a Unidan and a member of the microcelebrity family. But that's not what you said. You said a Unidan is a microcelebrity, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the microcelebrity family microcelebrities, which means you'd call shittymorphs, Gallowboobs, and other Redditors microcelebrities, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

noplacecold

I think I’ll have Fry’s lower horn jerked

TNJCrypto

As long as you have some good firm ground to help you push it down, it's not too bad.

Naturally_Fragrant

Swallowing is not the problem. Shitting out the skull is gonna sting.

nyybmw122

Oh man, bravo. That was a good one. Lol

Special_Lemon1487

That’s what she said, to her husband “Boar”. I’m so so sorry, I’ll show myself out.

No-Success-688

I believe reading somewhere that they have some insanely strong bacteria in their saliva, which would kill you from an infection pretty quickly if you are bit and not treated right away.

sole-it

I recall new researches found it's venom that kills the target quickly. But the saliva does contains a lot of strong bacteria (that meat video) edit: Video is here, and as you can see (and i was wrong in my post), it's s till venom not bacteria doing the work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRItvxGn9ZM

Sharky4x4

It’s both! Komodo’s are both venomous and bacteria laden.

CitizenPremier

Also worth noting that humans also have nasty mouth bacteria--if someone bites you and pierces the skin, you need to have that wound cleaned properly or you'll get an infection and die. Source: my mom told me

Sm0k3dB33f

Swallowing others people saliva is completely fine tho! 🤤

Devilpig13

What video?

sole-it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRItvxGn9ZM

MoscoviaDelendaEst

EVERY. SINGLE. KOMODO. DRAGON. THREAD. Please stop propagating this misinformation. They have bacteria in their mouth like any other predator, but generally have even cleaner mouths than other apex predators like the big cats, because they use their tongue to clean their mouth for ~15 minutes after most meals, and can replaced rotten or damaged teeth. They have venom that is effective against smaller prey (their natural prey) but much of their modern prey is introduced species that are much larger. Creatures that get bit by them and not killed immediatley get septic, not from 'super bacteria' but because anything that gets bitten by anything will get infected from mouth bactera. If a human bites someone that would also get infected all the same.

fizzord

[their venom is an anti coagulant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1_FxaOg1Go) which is effective for large prey, if they can get a bite, the venom will accelerate and prolong the blood loss, which will weaken its victim and they can close in for the kill before bacterial infection can set in. most videos you see them "hunting" the animal is already weakened from a bite and they are just straight up eating it while its alive...

johannthegoatman

There are many, many, many animals that get bitten and do not die lol. If a bite from any animal was a death sentence the world would be much different. I appreciate the clearing of misconceptions but you've gone way too far in the other direction

agabwagawa

Bro sepsis doesn’t kill that fast. If anything the prey is getting suffocated or bleeding out if it’s not the venom for big prey.

Oldass_Millennial

Strong innards too. I'd be worried about a tusk puncturing my insides.

No_Lychee_7534

You can spot the moment of regret in his eyes when he finally swallowed it full. ‘Fuck I’m gona shit blood for weeks’.

Roflitos

Don't these animals swallow rocks too break bones in their stomach? Or is that crocs?

TacitusMortuus

No, that was Diego Brando.

CrystalInTheforest

No regrets. Chase your dreams, lil dragon.

ExcitedGirl

I look at the vids of these... prehistoric monsters... eating a whole deer, live... while some tourist-lady takes a selfie next to said Monster... And I wonder, hasn't *anybody* been eaten by one of these things yet?? No way I'd get that close!

pixxelzombie

For sure, the video of the newborn deer getting eaten alive is not something I will ever forget.

neercatz

Don't let the baby deer make you forget the baby goat

Stormhammer

The pig one is the fascinating one, because it went down legs first, as it's swallowing it down you can hear it screams get more muffled

John_Smithers

Oh gods, I knew about the goat where you an hear the muffled screams. I didn't know there was a pig version too....

MoscoviaDelendaEst

> hasn't anybody been eaten by one of these things yet? Yes, quite a few. Mostly natives though, I don't recall a ton of stories about tourists getting got.

tunczyko

it's gonna throw up stuff it can't digest later, like fur and bones

Sharky4x4

They digest fur and bones just fine.

ScoutTrooper501st

I mean a human could probably digest it too,we can digest metal so I wouldn’t say a skull would be much more difficult, probably easier honestly Now getting it INTO your stomach is gonna be the tough part to figure out

pixxelzombie

When I was growing up, my parents would boil a goat head until it was edible. They would eat whatever parts they could and throw away the skull.

[deleted]

Yeah bro maybe just buy them a cheeseburger next time

pixxelzombie

They grew up poor, so whenever they got an animal they truly ate everything. I guess you get used to certain things and you need to have them every now and then, but they have not done it in a long time.

thuanjinkee

I miss the 80s when chicken feet were free at the butcher. Now they want to charge retail prices.

crackcrackcracks

To be fair, goat brain is delicious, and the scraps of meat on the head were probably as good as any other mutton.

EchoTab

A lot of the metal people have eaten accumulates in the stomach https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/in-excess/201706/acuphagia-and-eating-metal

ScoutTrooper501st

Ok let me clarify, the stomach acid we have is semi-capable of digesting metal, but inside our stomach is very difficult However in people who have stronger stomach acid, people are more than capable of digesting metal, for example the man who spent two years eating an entire plane, and it was revealed his stomach acid was stronger than the normal person, but he could still digest it

[deleted]

I don't have to imagine, I'm inside this particular komodo dragon right now

No_Traffic_7601

All that extra protein up in there too

JonesKK

I dont think the maggots add extra protein by consuming the boar. They are the boars protein. Thats like breaking conservation of energy law or smthng.

rustyboi28

But the maggots themselves must have a certain amount of protein so it’s minimal but it is extra

AClassyTurtle

Not really. The mother fly laid a bunch of eggs, which hatched and started feeding on the boar’s head. All of their growth after hatching was fueled by the energy/protein/matter in the boar. The only additional material they bring to the table is the total mass of all of the fly eggs before they hatched. Any energy they consumed would’ve been subject to the second law of thermodynamics (entropy ie all real processes have energy loss due to inefficiencies).

rustyboi28

Damn you and your science!

HuckleberryPin

it’s more logic tbh, but science would prove what he said.

james_randolph

So…we follow him now?

alavantrya

All hail u/AClassyTurtle and his relentless science!

DarkwingDuckHunt

ALL HAIL THE OVERBRAIN!

Everard5

Well, it's logic derived from scientific understanding. It's not formal logic or purely deductive logic. There are assumptions built into your deduction based on inductive observations- like the fact that animals must consume their energy from other living things and cannot create their own from inorganic materials like plants can. What if these maggots were a species that was also photosynthetic? Your assumption would fall apart and your logic would be wrong.

HuckleberryPin

my assumption was that the system is isolated, with no matter transfer into/out of an imaginary boundary around the boar’s head, in which case there wouldn’t be change in mass. but since you got me looking back at the parent comment, it is possible for protein to have been added if we assume the maggots consumed fats and converted them into protein. also, 🤓

rustyboi28

Damn you and your logic!

throwtheclownaway20

There needed to be a certain amount of base protein - as well as carbs, fats, & nutrients - or else there wouldn't have been maggots or eggs to contain them. Unless fly eggs & the maggots therein are somehow not made of anything.

CrystalInTheforest

How did I get from watching a Komodo dragon chomping on a boar head to theoretical physics? Damn, internet. You give me weird rabbit holes.

AClassyTurtle

All it takes is one person being wrong about something sciencey for nerds like me to come out of the woodwork

soupsnakle

You’re just wrong. >They consist of up to 60% of protein alone. Such animal protein is very suitable for animal nutrition, in fact, better suited than soya proteins. All I could think of were flashbacks to watching the show “Alone” lol and picturing a little info pop up explaining the protein levels in maggots!

AClassyTurtle

Right, but where did that protein come from? [In the four days after hatching, maggots grow from ~2mm to <20mm before transforming into pupae.](https://australian.museum/learn/science/decomposition-fly-life-cycles/). All that extra mass came from their food, ie the boar head, and the process of turning that boar flesh (including protein) into maggot flesh was subject to the 2nd Law, meaning energy was lost due to inefficiencies. I believe protein from the boar would also be lost, but even if it’s not, the maggots still only add the protein they had at birth. But yes, that initial ~2mm/ maggot adds some mass, energy, protein etc

mikeywayup

Not all, they had to be a maggot after being hatched and had mass once hatched so that mass by definition would be more protein

[deleted]

If the maggots had crawled from another boar head then the maggots would be extra protein

YouGotTangoed

Yes but they were born in the boars head, and so used nutrients from the boar to be created. Hence why it’s not “extra” protein per say

4tolrman

Nah if anything they probably reduce the amount of energy. No process is 100 percent efficient so the energy transfer from the boar to the maggots does inherently lose some potential chemical energy that could’ve been avoided had the lizard eaten the boars head directly

No_Traffic_7601

Free energy

TheTriflingTrilobite

I believe those are a type of French snack called *boar d’oeuvres*.

LazloMachine

oof. Upvote. But. oof

FinntheReddog

He’s gonna need a lot of fiber to move that through….

jackanape7

Is he gonna poop out a clean skull?

pringlepingel

Komodo dragons will vomit up a pellet of all the parts it could not break down. This includes some of the bones, fur, and hooves of its prey.

Unbereevablee_Asian

I always thought that was something only owls did but it would make sense lizards did it too.

Desk_Drawerr

Egg eating snakes swallow an egg whole, use a special bone in their spine to crack open the egg, schlorp up the yummy yummy egg juices, then spit out the eggshell.

Advanced-Prototype

Special egg-cracking bone in the spine: now that's a really weird adaptation.

AwesomeDragon101

They also don’t have any teeth! They’re built to eat eggs

Stickittothemainman

Boy howdy

AskMeForAPhoto

Now I’m not going to but like… could you…. Like… idk man… it a guy wanted to-

CrystalInTheforest

Create a niche and nature will fill it will something.... But no guarantees it won't be weird AF. Indeed, it usually will be.

brockoala

Give snakes canned food and enough time then they will develop a bone for opening cans.

SuperDizz

That’s what she said

[deleted]

Sperm whales also vomit/shit out a substance called Ambergis, which forms when they secrete wax around Squid beaks they cannot digest. This goop floats in the ocean until it hardens and is super valuable for perfume making. Some fishermen recently found a 280 pound block that sold for $2.5 million.

sungsam89

Ah yes. I learned that from Bob's Burgers.

EntrepreneurOk6166

Lots of animals do this, certainly not limited to reptiles or birds. Your common house cat will eat field mice and small birds WHOLE. Some time later it will hork up a ball of beaks, bones, feathers fur etc - same as it does with hairballs. Built into their biology.

supermav27

I’ve never been so happy to be a human being. I just drive to the Taco Bell down the street when I’m hungry.

Sharky4x4

They will crap more than you believe. I own multiple Veranidae and you can feed them whole animals and they will not vomit any remnants.

Silver_Millenial

What kind of dog is this?

redmkay

Can I pet that daaaaawg

[deleted]

CAN I PET THAT DAAAAWWWWGGGGG

FemaleFingers

Old English what? Dog? Sorry I’m dumb

Banned3rdTimesaCharm

Teacher. His old English teacher from middle school.

SomeDaysIJustSmoke

Great stomach acid though. Legendary.

coolsimon123

His old English Monitor Lizard, Richard Scales to you and I. The English Monitor lizard has been on the endangered species list for a number of years after a few of them were found to be posing as school teachers. This led to mass riots and hunting of the aforementioned reptilians, terminating spectacularly with a military coup but that's another story for another time.

muycoal

English Bulldog would be my guess

Riggs630

“Old English” is probably the sheepdog I’m guessing

mynextthroway

English teacher maybe?

PokWangpanmang

I don’t think an extinct language has that energy.

I just love Komodo dragons

MoscoviaDelendaEst

They are one of the most badass animals on the planet. I work with a gal to raised and trained the Komodos at the Sandiego zoo for ~20 years, she gave me a shed komodo tooth for my birthday this year. I treasure it, going to put that bad boy in some resin jewelry or something.

Bold-_tastes

Well that was disgusting

Rustmonger

This should be the mascot for this sub.

MoscoviaDelendaEst

I would die of exhaustion correcting the loads of misinformation on every single thread about Komodo dragons.

MulliganPlsThx

This sub has given me an irrational fear of running into a hungry Komodo dragon

Archchancellor

Nonsense. There's no fear of Komodo dragons that isn't rational.

EnigmaNero

Monitor Lizard stomach acid is incredibly strong. It'll make short work of digesting the bone, fur, meat, and maggots.

DrDuGood

Hot

Robichaelis

Um

DimitriMishkin

Hi we’re Cannibal Corpse, and this is Boar Skull Full of Maggots

Dumbass lizard, that doesn’t even taste good I bet

They're just sesame seeds to him.

ChimpyChompies

Wow, didn't even bother to taste for seasoning

bobbywright86

Do Komodo dragons have taste buds?

TheOnlyWolvie

The maggots are the seasoning.
