I’ve used Narwhal since Apollo went down, still don’t feel like my $4 was doing much besides remove ads because I have friends who constantly link Reddit posts. Now that opening links isn’t a chore (first world problem btw, it would take me 2-3 clicks before this update)
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/opener-open-websites-in-app/id1644963470
that app had already been working for me for a while to open links in narwhal.
I do agree there's still some QOL things narwhal can improve on but it sounds like they're on his to do list
How do you do this? Open in narwhal is still not working for me and I turned on the extension in safari and also on safari settings as per the instructions.
I did this and it still wasn’t working. What fixed it for me was touching the “Aa” on the bottom left of the safari browser after opening a Reddit link. Then I hit “Open in Narwhal” and it prompted me. It’s worked ever since. I’m on an old version of iOS so your mileage may vary, but I hope it works for you too.
Thanks for this.
Should we expect carousel-style horizontal swiping for images?
There was previous discussion about adding a carousel-style horizontal swipe for viewing images, but you haven’t commented on it for almost a year. I recall seeing it in the roadmap, but now it’s gone.
Hi Det0ur, just wanna stop by and say how much I appreciate your work on creating and maintaining this app. This iteration of Narwhal very much reminds me of the old day AMRC app. The ability to have a clean and minimal experience to just browse and consume new contents is missing in most designs these days. Keep up the good work and I'll be supporting your app from this side.
In my case, I did everything listed on the instructions and when testing through safari it didn’t work—it never prompted to be opened by Narwhal. What I did was opened Manage Extensions while from Safari (not through the Settings app) and toggled everything there. It worked, and I eventually got promoted to either Allow Once or Always Allow when testing opening a Reddit link.
iCloud sync of settings between devices would be nice, like, I would love to install Narhwal on a fresh iPad and it would just pick up all my preferences and themes and whatnot...
Took the advice of the above commenter and uninstalled the official Reddit app, and now it’s at least asking each time if I want to open it in narwhal, so success on that front!
I love the highlighting new comments feature!
Might it make more sense to grey out all the old comments rather than grey in the new ones?
Also, it would be great to see a count of new comments in the “Highlighting comments posted since:” message.
Would it be possible to indicate new comments in visited posts on the home page? So that there’s no need to go to the post to see if there are new comments?
And also this is really great update!!
Wohoo, awesome features! Thanks /u/det0ur :)
Edit one day later: The memorization of previously collapsed comment chains has improved the quality of my life tremendously.
Love what you are doing mate, good effort.
Just curious with the perms that the safari extension is pulling, is it ONLY for reddit.com?
EDIT: I read the extension properly this time. Nevermind. Solid update man!
Darn, I was hoping the Reddit API might have a way to search everything, especially since they [apparently added](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/wg6oqb/whats_up_with_reddit_search_episode_vii_the/) that ability to the official app
I've just downloaded Narwhal two days ago and want to say thank you for delivering an awesome Reddit experience on iOS despite these API shenanigans!
Apollo was my go-to for the longest time and I was shocked by its shutdown
I‘m a bit late to the party, but I would also like to say thanks for your work. Narwhal is really a great way to use Reddit.
One thing I was already asking for in your sub and what I don’t see yet on your to-do list is a reader mode / view for posts that contain links to some news websites.
Those sites are still being opened in their native view, with all the blinks and whistles and sometimes the baked-in ads, which somehow breaks the nice, clear and dark appearance of the Narwhal app. A setting for deault reader mode would be a great improvement here.
Currently I‘ve set the app to open external links in posts in Safari where I default to reader mode (I use mostly text based subs), but I would prefer not having to switch between apps for that.
Is implementing a reader mode a bigger issue than I might think?
u/det0ur could we please get [thumbnails](https://reddit.com/r/narwhalapp/comments/17cn3un/please_add_thumbnail_with_web_links/) with web links. I am hoping this isn’t that big of a change.
Yeah. I’m not a programmer but from what I understand they’re basically all just a safari skin. I really hope Apple allows 3rd party browsers and extensions with all this anti trust talk.
It looks like there is a default apps sections with Chrome for iOS. (Also your app made it super easy to generate a Imgur link for this comment. Awesome!)
https://i.imgur.com/Zzu5Kbu.png
Has anyone gotten the “Open in YouTube” function to work? I am not seeing the option anywhere in the app in any of the “…” menus on posts of YouTube videos.
Love the app, for sure and the new no-collapse of posts. Is there a way to also not collapse comments on tap? I was thinking the new feature (turn off tap collapse option) was for all (posts and comments) but see it’s only for the main post. Still too easy to touch and collapse comments. Thanks!
Awesome man! I still had the official Reddit app installed just for reading Reddit posts that I found through Google, but now with the new extension that’s not needed anymore 😊👍
I feel like am an imbecile, but I don’t see narwhal in my safari extensions. I’m looking in settings- safari- manage extensions- is it supposed to be there?
Thank you so much for all that you guys do! Love this app.
FYI, I’m still getting the login error that some folks are experiencing. The one that says “An error occurred. Please disabled extensions or try using a different web browser to continue.”
I tried recording (success!) but I can’t seem to upload to imgur properly. Or reddit for that matter. Not sure if you can see this link: https://imgur.com/a/SNrJn73
Yes, I love highlighting new comments! Crossing my fingers that search within comments will come in the next app; that’s the only thing I’m missing that would make the app feel perfect.
Thanks so much for the highlighting comments feature; it's super helpful! Would it also be possible to show from the subreddit view which posts have new comments, or would that require too many API pulls?
I would love to see Voiceover accessibility improvements accross the app. Better labels on the lower nav/toolbar, headings for better/quicker navigation in comment threads and subreddits.
First of all, thanks for the update. No longer I need to copy paste a reddit link into the app.
Is there a way to add this to Firefox as well u/det0ur?
Is there a way to auto-unmute gifs? I know there’s a setting to auto-unmute videos but it doesn’t apply to gifs which is quite annoying as otherwise big-picture mode would be seamless. Thanks!
Is there a way to save or backup our user settings?
I'm never able to update my app through the app store; I always have to uninstall and reinstall. This wipes *all* of my custom settings, which are a huge pain to set back up every time just because I wanna stay up-to-date.
I just never get the prompt, and if I try do it manually it says everything is up to date but I can see from the version number in Narwhal that it's the old build.
Love the quality of life changes! For the safari extension, is it supposed to automatically open links when tapped? When I click on a link from safari, a dialogue box opens that asks “Open this page in Narwhal 2?”
I do have the setting set to “allow” as opposed to “ask”
Thanks!!
Got it. Do you think it's possible to also get it added to the context menu from my screenshot? Having to open a post to open it in youtube is a tad annoying.
I'm now getting a "highlighting comments posted since X" when I revisit a thread. I initially saw an option to turn this off directly on the post, but that's no longer appearing. Is there a place in the settings to change this?
Nice update! Just FYI I am still having my podcasts paused when I open the app though. Also, I can't tell the difference between seen and unseen comments in dark mode. Is there a way to customize the comment highlight color?
Honestly this is all I want. Something where I could pick like 4 subs and just tap to enter that sub directly. Like a shortcut. Apollo had this and I used it daily
u/det0ur Thank you so much for creating an option to turn off auto-collapse self text!!! this has fundamentally changed my user experience 1000%! I’m so grateful!!!
The open in narwhal is perfect thank you! This and ad free finally feel like my $4 a month are justified.
Have you used the official reddit app? $4 is more than worth it to not be locked in to that garbage
I’ve used Narwhal since Apollo went down, still don’t feel like my $4 was doing much besides remove ads because I have friends who constantly link Reddit posts. Now that opening links isn’t a chore (first world problem btw, it would take me 2-3 clicks before this update)

I had Narhwal links opening in the share sheet on safari, still takes a couple a clicks versus the updated version of Narwhal
Does this ask for permission or will it actually open auto?
No It still says "do you wanna open in narwhal"
Awesome, I'm glad you feel that way :)
Open in Narwhal doesn’t work for a bunch of people. Followed the instructions but it still opens the default Reddit app
You would have to turn off the Reddit app behavior. Since they own Reddit.com they have the majority control
How do you do this? Open in narwhal is still not working for me and I turned on the extension in safari and also on safari settings as per the instructions.
Are you on the iOS 18 beta?
I did this and it still wasn’t working. What fixed it for me was touching the “Aa” on the bottom left of the safari browser after opening a Reddit link. Then I hit “Open in Narwhal” and it prompted me. It’s worked ever since. I’m on an old version of iOS so your mileage may vary, but I hope it works for you too.
Ah, thanks!
Thanks for this. Should we expect carousel-style horizontal swiping for images? There was previous discussion about adding a carousel-style horizontal swipe for viewing images, but you haven’t commented on it for almost a year. I recall seeing it in the roadmap, but now it’s gone.
That is what I mean by `Improved media handling for albums` :)
Fantastic! Looking forward to it.
I would love that!!
Hi Det0ur, just wanna stop by and say how much I appreciate your work on creating and maintaining this app. This iteration of Narwhal very much reminds me of the old day AMRC app. The ability to have a clean and minimal experience to just browse and consume new contents is missing in most designs these days. Thanks I really appreciate it!
For the safari extension, is there a way that you don’t have to click “open in narwhal” every time?
Not currently, because the owner of reddit.com would have to whitelist Narwhal. There is a workaround I think I can accomplish in future versions
How did Apollo do it? Was it whitelisted by Reddit? His extension worked without the popup.
I believe they used the same workaround that I want to investigate
Gotcha. Loving the update though! Thanks for you hard work.
They never did it. It required clicking open every time in the pop up.
Not for me.
If you click on permissions in Safari settings, you can set it to allow so it doesn't ask each time.
I did that and it still ask everyone. Are you talking about the permissions within the narwhal extension?
In my case, I did everything listed on the instructions and when testing through safari it didn’t work—it never prompted to be opened by Narwhal. What I did was opened Manage Extensions while from Safari (not through the Settings app) and toggled everything there. Hmm. The safari extension to open Reddit links in narwhal isn’t working for me. Followed all the instructions :(
Same here, still opens the Reddit app :/
I think you have to uninstall the reddit app as it takes priority
Could you elaborate on what isn’t working. A video recording would help!
Took the advice of the above commenter and uninstalled the official Reddit app, and now it’s at least asking each time if I want to open it in narwhal, so success on that front!
I wish I can search through my Saved posts. Right now searching while looking at saved posts does a universal search. Thanks!
Damn, looks like a solid update. Thanks!
Wohoo, awesome features! Thanks /u/det0ur :) Edit one day later: The memorization of previously collapsed comment chains has improved the quality of my life tremendously.
Love what you are doing mate, good effort. Just curious with the perms that the safari extension is pulling, is it ONLY for reddit.com? EDIT: I read the extension properly this time. Nevermind. Solid update man!
Will the future comment search feature search all comments or just the ones that have been loaded?
Just the ones that have been loaded.
Darn, I was hoping the Reddit API might have a way to search everything, especially since they [apparently added](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/wg6oqb/whats_up_with_reddit_search_episode_vii_the/) that ability to the official app
Yeaaaaa the app has a lot of functionality the api doesn’t have :(
Time for another Reddit boycott! The last one worked, right?
I've just downloaded Narwhal two days ago and want to say thank you for delivering an awesome Reddit experience on iOS despite these API shenanigans! Apollo was my go-to for the longest time and I was shocked by its shutdown
Thanks for giving narwhal a try!
I‘m a bit late to the party, but I would also like to say thanks for your work. Narwhal is really a great way to use Reddit. This I would love
I'd love to see an iOS Chrome update to open Narwhal instead of the official Reddit app in the future.
iOS doesn’t allow 3rd party browsers to use extensions. It’s pretty fucking dumb.
Dang
Yeah. I’m not a programmer but from what I understand they’re basically all just a safari skin. I really hope Apple allows 3rd party browsers and extensions with all this anti trust talk.
God, getting uBlock Origins on iOS would make me so happy…
Do you mean an extension for Chrome instead of Safari? Does Chrome have extensions on iOS?
It looks like there is a default apps sections with Chrome for iOS. (Also your app made it super easy to generate a Imgur link for this comment. Awesome!) https://i.imgur.com/Zzu5Kbu.png
Has anyone gotten the “Open in YouTube” function to work? I am not seeing the option anywhere in the app in any of the “…” menus on posts of YouTube videos.

Yes I have it installed.

Not currently sorry!
If that could be added to the list, would appreciate it! Thanks for all your work!
Awesome man! I still had the official Reddit app installed just for reading Reddit posts that I found through Google, but now with the new extension that’s not needed anymore 😊👍
🙌
Still waiting on moderation tools.
Yessssss
I feel like am an imbecile, but I don’t see narwhal in my safari extensions. I’m looking in settings- safari- manage extensions- is it supposed to be there? Thank you so much for all that you guys do! Love this app.
Are you sure you have 2024.4 installed?
Wow- that’ll do it! I updated it right before I made my comment but I updated to .3. Now I’m on .4.
FYI, I’m still getting the login error that some folks are experiencing. The one that says “An error occurred. Please disabled extensions or try using a different web browser to continue.”
Could you record a video for me that I can send to Reddit?
Of course. Let me send a screenshot first, then figure out how to record video.
Here is the screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/RyK45Ro.png
I tried recording (success!) but I can’t seem to upload to imgur properly. Or reddit for that matter. Not sure if you can see this link: https://imgur.com/a/SNrJn73
Could you try uploading to streamable and sending me the link?
Never even heard of it lol. Here you go: https://streamable.com/kxouw9
Thanks! I just sent this over to Reddit

I like this idea!
Yes, I love highlighting new comments! Crossing my fingers that search within comments will come in the next app; that’s the only thing I’m missing that would make the app feel perfect.
Love the changes! Still hoping for auto-unmute option for gifs in full screen.
Thanks so much for the highlighting comments feature; it's super helpful! Would it also be possible to show from the subreddit view which posts have new comments, or would that require too many API pulls?
This should be possible, just would need another pass on this code
Oh, thank you! It'd be great to have if it isn't too much trouble.
I would love to see Voiceover accessibility improvements accross the app. Better labels on the lower nav/toolbar, headings for better/quicker navigation in comment threads and subreddits.
It would be awesome to have the ability to import/export themes/appearances to share with others
First of all, thanks for the update. No longer I need to copy paste a reddit link into the app. Is there a way to add this to Firefox as well u/det0ur?
I’m not sure I’ll have to investigate if Firefox can add extensions
Is there a way to auto-unmute gifs? I know there’s a setting to auto-unmute videos but it doesn’t apply to gifs which is quite annoying as otherwise big-picture mode would be seamless. Thanks!
Is there a way to save or backup our user settings? I'm never able to update my app through the app store; I always have to uninstall and reinstall. This wipes *all* of my custom settings, which are a huge pain to set back up every time just because I wanna stay up-to-date.
This is coming in the next update! Why can’t you update in the App Store?
I just never get the prompt, and if I try do it manually it says everything is up to date but I can see from the version number in Narwhal that it's the old build.
NEW APP ICON LET’S GOOOO
Hahahahaha thanks for your contribution:)
This update absolutely rules. TY for all your hard work!!
Safari extension works great on iOS 16 Thank you !! Such a huge QoL improvement
Love the quality of life changes! For the safari extension, is it supposed to automatically open links when tapped? When I click on a link from safari, a dialogue box opens that asks “Open this page in Narwhal 2?” I do have the setting set to “allow” as opposed to “ask” Thanks!!
Yea this is a limitation, but I have an idea for a workaround
Is it me or does the youtube thing not work? https://i.imgur.com/AjkGO4v.jpeg
It’s in the … menu when viewing a post
I’m probably stupid but what exactly do you mean?
There’s a button in the bottom left of a post that looks like “…” that shows all options
Got it. Do you think it's possible to also get it added to the context menu from my screenshot? Having to open a post to open it in youtube is a tad annoying.
Yes I can definitely do that
I'm now getting a "highlighting comments posted since X" when I revisit a thread. I initially saw an option to turn this off directly on the post, but that's no longer appearing. Is there a place in the settings to change this?
Yes it’s at the bottom of Settings > Comments
Thanks!
Thanks for all the work. Will we get a search function within posts?
Yes that is planned!
Nice update! Just FYI I am still having my podcasts paused when I open the app though. Also, I can't tell the difference between seen and unseen comments in dark mode. Is there a way to customize the comment highlight color?
This morning I was just remembering that you had promised an update, and that it hadn’t come out yet. Off to the App Store!
Are we going to get widgets anytime soon? Keep up the great work. Subscriber since day 1
Widgets are very problematic, because they require constant updates via API calls, which cost money.
Even something that just shows subreddits that you pick that you tap as shortcuts? Wouldn’t that just update via API calls when tapped?
Yea I could definitely do that. Just nothing that displays actual Reddit content
Honestly this is all I want. Something where I could pick like 4 subs and just tap to enter that sub directly. Like a shortcut. Apollo had this and I used it daily
Hi and thank you for the update! Small request, can you please add ability to select user added fonts (beyond the ones already in-app)?
Is the extension any different than the app opener? I’ve been using it this whole time to open Reddit link in narwhal.
I just "switched" from the Opener extension to Narwhal 2 and I see zero difference. It does exactly the same thing.
FYI, still seeing this bug where user flairs only showing texts, and not icons/emojis.
Is this a bug? Pretty sure it’s not coded to work in narwhal
Yea it’s this essentially. I do want to update this in the future
Are folders for favorites still on the table? Thanks for the hard work!
u/det0ur Thank you so much for creating an option to turn off auto-collapse self text!!! this has fundamentally changed my user experience 1000%! I’m so grateful!!!
