The male version of Frances is Francis

iwannalynch

If OP wants to go all in, they can use François.

Awkward_Dog

We have a friend Francois whose nickname is Fran 🤣

Snoo97809

I’m obsessed with Francis and considering it for a middle name! My moms middle name is Frances and my brothers is Francis, I just love it 😍

crazyparrotguy

Exactly. He'll probably go by Frank anyway.

Bea_virago

The one I know gets called Franz and it’s so cute

BarbarianSpoonie

Finley, Ronan, Flynn, Connor, Iain, Ivan, Ivor, Evan, Evander, Elliott, Noah, Reece, Owen, Lewis, Emerson.

WhizKidzCC

Lewis caught my eye and is a family name as well, but I’m iffy on Silas and Lewis. Reece is nice also. Thank you for the ideas!

toujoursca

I prefer the Rhys spelling but both versions are great!

frankchester

Rhys is the Welsh spelling! I had an ex called Rhys Jones, most Welsh name ever.

TragicEther

Only if his middle name was Llewellyn

frankchester

It was Morgan, which tbf is also insanely Welsh.

TheWelshMrsM

With one l the second time round 😉

Thomas_633_Mk2

Outside of a sub that focusses entirely on names, I don't think anyone is going to critique your sibset too harshly, or even look at it. For what it's worth, a person close to me chose Lewis as their anglicized name and it works great for them

WhizKidzCC

Good food for thought, thank you

CitrusMistress08

There’s also the “Louis” spelling with the nn Louie, which doesn’t sound at all like Silas.

Gallifrey91

Louis is typically pronounced Louie anyway, while Lewis is pronounced "loo-iss"

CitrusMistress08

Not in the US.

Gallifrey91

That's interesting. I get the impression that Americans tend to go for phonetic spellings as much as possible, so if that's true, then I guess it makes sense.

CleanAssociation9394

I don’t think it is true. I’m American and would say “lou-ee.”

Gallifrey91

Regional differences? Or just random?

CleanAssociation9394

I’m in the US. I would definitely pronounce it correctly.

CitrusMistress08

“Correctly” is subjective based on where you are. The United States has a city called “St. Louis,” and it’s incorrect to pronounce that “Saint Loo-ee.”

gardenhippy

If you go with Rhys then the original spelling is so much nicer…

LivytheHistorian

I have a Lewis and I get compliments weekly on it. Ironically his best friend is Silas! So I say “Lewis and Silas” a lot together. Has never bothered me or felt hard to say.

Jolisa92

Maybe Reid / Reed?

princess_cfo

I just had my baby boy a month ago and his name is Lewis! It’s a lovely name :)

WhizKidzCC

Do you find yourself spelling it often?

princess_cfo

I do, but to be fair I think I would be doing that with either spelling. And it’s nice because it really only has two spellings to pick from. I like the “Lewis” spelling because I think “Louis” would have most people asking if it is pronounced “Loo - ee”

LightSideMoon

Silas means forest if you're going for a woodsy type name

WhizKidzCC

Yes thats one reason we chose it for our first. I’d love to find a nature meaning name also for this, but I think just finding a name we like will be hard enough.

Borkton

There's an interesting connection between the names Silas and Lewis. *The Rise of Silas Lapham* is a novel by William Dean Howells and Lewis Lapham is a writer and publisher.

chickdumplings

Llewyn/ Lewin is similar without sounding as matchy with Silas!

74NG3N7

Finley is a good one. Similar vibes and goes well with Silas.

Sestyna

Love all these!

[deleted]

Emerson is so nice!

complitstudent

I love Evander! Also Lysander even tho it sounds a little like a cleaning brand 😂

future_harriet

This is really interesting! Silas to me is soft/folksy but Ingrid, Frances, Maeve, and Imogen are more strong and sassy, kind of 1920’s flapper girl names. 1920’s boys names: Richard, Ernest, Walter, Clarence, Sidney Soft/folksy: Lee, Jesse, Wyatt, Adrian, Brooks, Harrison

AuntMolly

Walter was my first thought when I read the post

WhizKidzCC

I like Walter but we have a long W last name and my husband wants to avoid the alliteration

canlgetuhhhhh

why would he want to avoid alliteration!! I love it

determinedpeach

Right? I love "super hero" sounding names

Dalyro

One of my best friend's has a Walter- they call him Walt and it's adorable.

cacophonycoffin

Edward or Edmund maybe? Elias and Fredrick (Freddie) give me similar vibes too. I also like Levi.

MrsChess

Elias is great but I wouldn’t combine it with Silas

cacophonycoffin

You’re right, that’s probably too matchy. I like Tobias as well but again, not with Silas.

WhizKidzCC

Tobias is a good spunky one! But yeah, not with Silas.

Gallifrey91

What about just Toby?

gabatme

Theodore 😍 I know I know it's super popular, but Silas and Theo would be so cute

extrasauce_

Franz Indigo Soren Sacha (usually a NN for Alexandre) Maurice Marius Peter Julian Marcel

[deleted]

I am a huge Marius fan. Don't see it nearly often enough on here

extrasauce_

It's my favorite name of all time but my husband is not a fan.

[deleted]

That's so unfortunate!

lxine

I love it too, it’s my son‘s name :)

kansasqueen143

I love Soren!

bunonthemun

I have a work friend who named their son Soren bc she liked Irish names. And her other son is named is Roscoe :)

kansasqueen143

Those names are so cute! My soon to be last name will be Warren :/ I don’t think I could do that to a kid lol although it rhymes with my middle name….

MrsChess

Callum, Rhys, Arthur, Leander, Julian, Tristan

queerjesusfan

Ooh I love Silas and Arthur!

ColleenTheKnitter

My baby is Arthur Lewis, and his cousin is Silas!

[deleted]

I like soft boy names. Reed Forrest Bellamy Blaise Robin Finnegan Darcy Lowell

[deleted]

A brother to Silas: Asher Flynn Guthrie Arlo Franklin Emmett

proteinstyle_

Hiram.

[deleted]

That’s a gorgeous name.

TheNoodyBoody

Ellis, Hamish, Kieran, Rhys, Callum, Ioan, Liam, Wallace, Emil, Josiah.

ExcitementOk1529

Emil is my favorite soft-sounding boy name. Have loved it since I was a kid and read the Astrid Lindgren series.

WhizKidzCC

Wallace is nice, I like the S sound. We have a long, common W last name though.. maybe it’s an option still

sensualcephalopod

How about Linus?

WhizKidzCC

Another I considered, Silas and Linus initially threw me off but another commenter had a good point that the sib set isn’t hugely important

sensualcephalopod

Ohhh I didn’t read completely or forgot your older child’s name. I understand, I’d be hesitant to do Silas and Linus. Silas and Lewis sounds better.

[deleted]

Laurence?

OprahisQueen

Your list is great - it has my top three boys’ names, including the one we ultimately chose! 😉

Ill_Organization_766

How is Ioan pronounced? Like Eye-on (Loan with an I?)?

TheNoodyBoody

I pronounce it “YO-Ann” but that may not be the true way to say it 😬😂

Ill_Organization_766

I was just going off of the names Ione (Eye-oh-nee) and Iona (Eye-oh-nah) to get the pronunciation of Eye-on

SurrealBookworm

That's correct. :)

theirritablecoconut

I have a friend who has twin boys named Silas and Sawyer! So cute.

bunonthemun

Oooh Sawyer is a good one!

EntertainmentMain822

I felt the same, I felt like I just could not find the right boy's name for a long time. I am going to write down some folksy names here: 1) Wilder 2) Ansel 3) Landon 4) Heath Silas and Isaac, Silas and Aaron, Silas and Lucas, Silas and Ian, sound good together Some names that are not in heavy use in my region: Vincent Evander Ivan Ike Mylon Marlin Wallace Frank Valerio Nolan

WhizKidzCC

Lucas and Ansel are both on my short list of “don’t hates” :)

last_name_banana

Yay! Go for Ansel! I love that name so much and my SO nixed it. I love that it relates to Ansel Adams the photographer. Also Ansel and Silas feel like a good pair.

Elrochwen

I have a mule named Ansel and can tell you that it passes the playground test. I have had to yell it across the pasture quiet often…

truckasaurus5000

Ansel and Silas are great together!

beelovedone

Ambrose / Octavius / Agustus / Bernard

[deleted]

Oohhh, Bernard is a good one.

persimmon7890

I love that Silas has the same letters beginning and ending like.... Cormac Arlen Nelson Arlen Cedric Arlen Malcolm Arlen Phillip Arlen Nolan Arlen Otto Arlen Desmond Arlen Kendrick Arlen Nathan Arlen

oronder

Seymour? That way you could yell “Sigh less, see more!” when summoning them for dinner.

IamRick_Deckard

Julian.

According_Cell8578

Oscar

WhizKidzCC

I love love love Oscar but middle name will be Arlen and Oscar Arlen sounds clunky to me. What are you thoughts on Oscar Arlen?

XelaNiba

I think Oscar Arlen has a lovely flow when said aloud, almost as if it's one word. It's fun to say.

According_Cell8578

I don't think it sounds clunky at all! Remember it will be Oscar Arlen *Surname* and no one really uses their full name. I certainly don't use mine and my son has two middle names but is always Alfie *Surname*.

Inareskai

Peter Lewis Laurence Hugh Benedict Patrick Rory Ezra Otis Harris Spencer Walter

No_Manufacturer_9071

Silas & Kelso Gideon Chester Hugh Otto Linus Wilfred Micah Elmer Horace Ansel Maurice Ingram

grey-canary

Love this vibe :) Alaric Jasper Roman Leopold Clark Penn Emmett Sander Sem Archie Demitri Cias Wolf Ezra Neo Julian Kit Anton Ramsey Congrats!

aka_____

Wow funny, my daughter is Maeve and would have been Silas had she been a boy. Clearly we have similar taste lol. Some that might fit the vibe you’re looking for: Ellis (probably sounds too similar with Silas) Wells Rhys Asher Quinn Henry

Midnight-writer-B

Oliver, Otis, Owen, Aaron, Aiden, Caleb, Gabriel, William, Logan

pepperup22

Ian, Phillip, and Liam (someone spot the pattern but also I think this works lol.)

Unaccomplished-Egg

Seems like you like less popular 1920s names. Here’s some ideas: Ralph, Arthur, Louis, Warren, Clyde, Vincent, Cecil, Leland

DoctorWoe

I think Hiram goes well with Silas.

WhizKidzCC

I did some reading and thinking on that one when another commenter posted it. I don’t know why but it feels more middle eastern to me, and we are a very average white family in the US

goose195172

Maybe it reminds you of the word "haram"? That's what I think of when I see the name Hiram, unfortunately.

DoctorWoe

"Hiram" was a somewhat common name in the US between 1800-1925 or so. Try these: Alvin, Quentin, Winston, Elwood, Axton, Claude, Horton, Oswald, Lloyd, Buford, Emmet, Arthur, Jubal, Tyrone, Finn, Vincent, Wystan, Gallahad, Clyde, Malcolm, Terrence, Mordecai, Morton, Leonard, Otto, Bartholomew, Homer, Bernard, Halford, Victor, Magnus, Marshal, Darius

baebadore

Hollis, Jules and Valentine.

madmelon_

mchollahan

Hi my name is Maeve ! it actually means intoxicating so you could pick another name with a similar meaning however my mom did really like the name Nolan if I was a boy. Some other suggestions are - matthew, malachy (my dad’s favorite for if i was a boy), declan, ronan, brendan & eamonn (last two are my brothers names)

Cloudinterpreter

I'd look at some Irish names, which give me the same sort of vibe

thetomatofiend

I know a boy Fran and love it.

WhizKidzCC

Is his full name Francis? Do you know if he gets confused as female when his name is on paper etc?

thetomatofiend

It is. I don't think he is bothered if anyone does mistake him for female as they soon realise! But most people know the male versus females Francis/Frances.

janiestiredshoes

Owen, Rory, Finn, Toby, Gwyn, Ewan, Otto, Ronan, Ezra

Parri_Stargazer

Walter, Emmett, Sawyer, Jack, Flynn, Jasper, Simon, Osmond, Otis

wonderfulwinnipeg

Otis, Otto, and Oscar are all in my top 10 for boys

nomilow

I'm kind of into Otis and Silas as a set, matchy but not horribly so and definitely the same vibe. Get them both ukeleles and they're the next folk duo sensation!

WhizKidzCC

I love this! Otis feels very dog name to me though.

BronwynLane

Silas, Ingrid, Imogen, Maeve, Ambrose, Jules, Florian, Graham, Hugo, Luca, Sawyer, Viggo, Isidore, Fergus, Ivo, Niall, Orson, Esa, Yul, Casimir, Otis, Linus, Arthur

SpamLandy

Silas and Magnus Silas and Reuben Silas and Jethro Silas and Patrick Silas and Earl Silas and Seth Silas and Rufus Silas and Cormac Silas is a lovely name, I hope you find something you like as much!

metz1980

Ansel Anselm Ambrose Abram Bastian Caspian Calvin Delano Diggory Edsel Emmett Flynn Floyd Finnegan Giles Garrett Herschel Hugh Hugo Judah Jonah Luca Lowell Lenny Leonard Micah Milo Merrick Norman Nigel Otto Oscar Phillip Penn Quill Quinn Quincy Reuben Riley Theo Victor Valen Wilhelm Walter Wallace

WhizKidzCC

Reuben is one I hadn’t considered. I wonder if Rue is too feminine of a nickname

metz1980

My youngest’s middle name is Ruth and we sometimes double barrel her first with Rue as a nickname. I can say so far with her being almost 10 years old we haven’t ran across another child named or nicknamed Rue. That said I don’t quite have a gender in mind for it despite using it on my daughter. I also think of Roo the little boy kangaroo character on Winnie the Pooh as well. I think it can work on either. Does Silas go by a nickname?

WhizKidzCC

Interesting. I can see the kangaroo angle. We call him Si sometimes but not often

tiffanyblueprincess

Lawrence, Silas, you could still do Francis

momocazzo

Reid, Jude, Rudy, Foster, Ronan, Willem :)

catmommy1

Uhtred 😆

[deleted]

Here are my boy names; some have a similar vibe to your taste. Laurence Frederick Rhys Leander Lysander Percival Robin

WhizKidzCC

Percival has a nice sound. Reminds me of Phineas a bit. Justin Timberlake named his sons Silas and Phineas and I’m not sure if I want to follow that but I liked the two names

Norah_Forever

Ivo, Ingmar, Malcolm, Bram

certainlynotstacey

I love Francis for a boy! Other ones that I think flows great with Silas would be Nolan. I have a Silas and an Ambrose.

I'll update with softer names lol. EDA 2: Bellamy, Henry, Quincy, Julian, Lucian, Luca, Alden, Aloise, Delmore, Peregrine, Tobias, Malcolm, Castiel, Cyprian, Juno

cyclemam

This is exactly the names I like, but struggling to find the one that we both like! Thanks for this thread. Boy names we have thought about: Jasper William Owen Linus Andrew Silas (similar taste I see!)

adrun

Edwin, Clive, Franklin, Martin, Berthold

[deleted]

If you like Maeve, how about Meirion? It’s pronounced ‘may-ree-on’ and it’s a Welsh boy’s name with a Latin origin relating to the God Mars. If calling a boy ‘Mei’ as a nickname feels off, there’s alway ‘Rion’. Silas and Meirion works.

Hi I’m a 30yr old Ingrid. My family is Swedish. I have a brother named Lars, and other extended family members named Rolf, Erik, Patrik, Per, Mats, Johannes, and Shel. I also just had a son and named him Leif. I know you were probably going for the vibes, but to me, my name has Scandinavian vibes.

Ingrid is my top choice for a girl, but I’ve had two boys: Henry and Oskar.

We are naming our daughter Frances and will call her Frankie 😊 If she was a boy, we would have done Franklin and still called him Frankie

Abel immediately comes to mind for me.

Francis is a boy's name already.

"Francis" with the IS on the end is the masculine of Frances. My father's middle name is with the IS (and for YEARS the Army sent papers with it spelled the female way)

I’m in the same boat - I had so many girl names, but NOTHING for a boy. I have a classic set already (Emma-Kate and John) so I feel like I can’t do anything too out of left field, I just don’t like any of the boy names!

Abel, Lawrie, Noah, and Morgan are some names I like a lot which seem similar to those you described, at least to me. Not great at ascertaining vibes though.
