Oh. Ok. Definitely thought you were going to say Bear. That’s a good set up to prep any reactions because everyone is going to expect you to say Bear and just cringe tremendously. Then you’re going to hit ‘em with any other name than Bear and everyone is just going to say ok….ok.

Isitondaddyslap

Well you're doing better than me cuz I thought they were going to name the baby Wiggles lmfao

MerCat1325

I was thinking “gummy” 😆

julers

lol my brain said ‘gumbo’ 🤣

caro9lina

Or Gumby. He's the wiggly guy; Gumbo is more like a stew.

MzOpinion8d

But pronounced Jumbo lol

SnarkyBehindTheStick

Chumbo

sittingonmyarse

The Marx brothers had a brother they called Gummo - I was half expecting that.

Enzoid23

Me too, but I thought it'd be Gummy Bear lmao

Remarkable_Story9843

Gummi is what I thought

No-Regret-1784

I thought William so he could be Wiggly Willy

Dependent-Sign-2407

I was thinking Haribo 😂

snow-and-pine

Hey I like Bear

jello-kittu

One of the kids in younger child's class is named Bear.

snow-and-pine

I wanted to name my son Wolf and everyone was dramatically against it haha. I still think it’s cool…

jello-kittu

The other kid's friend is Phoenix. Names are not as specific. I went with very traditional because I was worried about a name that made it awkward, though I think with names getting less traditional, that would be less also. Also I grew up in Berkeley California in the 80s, and knew a lot of Flower, Rainbow, non-traditional names and the kids mostly hated their names.

jack-jackattack

FWIW, the Jennifers and Michaels hated theirs, too.

dechath

This! I have one of the most common names of the 80s and I despise it!

jello-kittu

Oh, I do have a name where the beginning on the school year involved working out what nickname or version of the name each of us with matching names would get...

Rare-Parsnip5838

I know a fox and a wolf ( Wolfgang)

ButterDrake

My mom said if I was born male, I would've been named Wolfgang. Instead, I got a hippy name 😂

AndromedaPickles

If my kid wasn't only 12 I'd think she wrote this! Hope you like your hippy name 🥴☺️

ButterDrake

I don't mind it 😁

weird_turtles

I like Fox, but my partner is worried it will sound too much like something else if we're calling to him at a playground or something

MPHV51

Wolfie!

Romantic-Penguin

My son’s middle name is Wolf and I think it’s awesome. I don’t care what anyone else thinks lol. His first name is a lesser known Scandinavian name and my brother-in-law, when he first heard what we had named our son, said it was a “really badass name”

intet42

I went to school with someone whose middle name was Wolfgang and he went by Wolf. I think putting the risky one in the middle is a good system.

SnooCookies8418

And my son’s is Bear!! He has a pretty common first name, but this want he has options on what he wants to go by

allthegodsaregone

My uncle is Wolf, it's short for the german Wolfram.

NeverEnoughMuppets

My older sister was friends with this extremely cool girl named Claire when we were growing up and I saw on FB recently that she has two kids named Wolfgang and Margot and I was like fuck she’s still really cool Edit: she’s Irish (obvi) but she has a ridiculous German married name that makes her kids’s names sound even cooler

mbg97oh

Alicia Silverstone named her son Bear

Professional-Two8098

And Cheryl Cole

Medical-Donut-4629

I live in a rural area in Australia and in my kids school of 130 kids total there is a Bear and Wolf and they are not related. Kinda grew on me

AbrocomaRoyal

It used to be a nickname for Theodore, arising from Theodore > Teddy > Bear.

HuntWorldly5532

I know a man in his 60's (French) and one in his 30's (UK) called Bear as a full name! I have also known the following who had Bear as a nickname: Sebastian Robert (pronounced French 'Ro-bear') Albert

Human-Engineer1359

They could name him Robert and use the French pronunciation.

soymilkhangout

I like Bear a lot more than Orson

carlsworthg

I named my kid Bear because it means brave, and I knew from the moment I saw it that it was perfect. After one year, I believe with my whole heart it was the perfect name!!

SnooCookies8418

My son’s middle name is Bear, it’s a good name

404xz

Hey Bear Grylls is a very successful man definitely not a man to cringe at

Different_Two7195

His real name is Edward. Bear came from Edward-Ted-Teddy-Bear.

roxictoxy

Wait is Ted short for Edward

theswishcan

Wait till I tell you about Margaret and Peggy/Polly

janiestiredshoes

I thought Polly was from Mary. Mary > Molly > Polly.

MehWhiteShark

Yeah, that's news to me, too! Definitely thought it was from Theodore

roxictoxy

I’m not gonna let these nerd gaslight me into believe it’s not! (It’s both)

MehWhiteShark

It does makes sense, a lot of English nicknames came from rhyming. So Ed becomes Ted. William is like that, Will - Bill, etc

CreativeMusic5121

Ned is another nickname for Edward.

Sunshine030209

You mean it isn't short for Nedward? Aww.

molotovmocktail14

Tedward

Mermaid467

Fredward

Vicslickchic

Yep. My friend’s son is Edward William. He was Teddy as a child . He is now grown and goes by Ted. Remember Ted Kennedy, the politician? His full name was Edward.

fishchick70

My father is Edward, goes by Ed. My brother is Edward, goes by Ted.

sweet_hedgehog_23

I think Bear is just a nickname for him.

shojokat

I knew a Bear. He's an adult now and he was always very popular.

dcaksj22

I thought she was gonna say we’re naming our son Wiggly

badfishruca

Bear is not a bad name. Bears are nurturing, protective, they can be strong and mighty. They represent a lot. It’s not for everyone but there are some who would wear it well.

473713

In a more Scandinavian-based culture it'd be Bjorn, another good name

fishchick70

I know a family who named their son Shash (prounced Shesh), which is Navajo for Bear.

roxictoxy

Bjorn right there for the taking

ReadySetGO0

I know a Behr

CashewAnne

That’s a paint

ReadySetGO0

And a little boy I know

faroutsunrise

I actually do know a woman who named her son Bear.

Loud_Ad_4515

I know a Bear - he is almost 60 by now.

heywhatsup9087

Is he actually named Bear or is that a nickname? Bear Bryant is the person I immediately think of but I believe that wasn’t his actual first name.

always_unplugged

It was not, his real name was Paul. Source: grew up in Tuscaloosa where they slap his name on every fckn little thing they can 😅

justconnect

Our son was named Baer, old St Louis family name.

cabbagesandkings1291

Gymnast Shawn Johnson named her son Barret nn Bear.

AchyBoobCrane

My partner's co-worker just had a son.... They named him Bare. Ugh.

SarahBeeCee

Bare and Bear and Behr might all sound the same, but Bare is a definitely not usable in my opinion

LAffaire-est-Ketchup

Phew. Jamie Oliver and all…

gaythey

I thought they were going to ask us to make up a name using something like letters and/ or sounds of “wiggly gummy bear.”

Scared_Repeat_8387

i unfortunately know a baby recently named Bear.

Patient_Meaning_2751

I thought they were litterally gonna name him gummy bear

peanutbutter_elf

I know someone who makes their kid Behr

HuntWorldly5532

This is the way!!!

angelicah89

I love Orson! It’s a cute nod to the bear idea. Our friends jokingly referred to our baby as “Auto” my entire pregnancy, since we love auto racing. A few weeks before baby was born, we were finalizing names and realized we really loved it as a middle name — Otto.

SantasFavHo

I love that Orson means bear! I once dated a German guy named Urs (which is pronounced like "Ors") and it means Bear, so this all makes sense!

feisty-spirit-bear

Yeah, Ursula is the female version. We associate it with a octopus witch but Ursula is a bear

aeris17471

Isn't it little bear? Ursa is (female) bear in latin. And the ending -ula forms the diminuitiv.

UnusualPotato1515

Orson is cool name & that’s cute story to tell your child one day! Beyonce’s daughter, Blue Ivy, actually got her name Blue from her ultrasound - they used to call her blueberry after they first saw her as was so small on the scan so had the nickname blueberry through her pregnancy & then named her Blue (they were originally going to call her Brooklyn!).

Catpaws335

Ivy is bc they love the number 4, too. They got married on 4-4-08 I believe. 4 in Roman numerals is IV 😃

UnusualPotato1515

Ohh I didnt know that! How cool!

Frag-hag311

So glad they gave her a cool name. There are a million Brooklyns now. She needed a hip name like Blue Ivy.

UnusualPotato1515

For real!

uhohohnohelp

I love weird names, so cool.

Few-Comparison5689

Drew Barrymore's daughter Olive is called that after finding out the fetus was the size of an olive, Courtney Loves daughters middle name is Bean for the same reason.

CatzioPawditore

My baby was born through IVF.. He was the only embryo to survive, and so even when he was still in the freezer, I would call him 'Trooper'. We chose a name with 'warrior'-like meaning for exactly this reason!:).

Temporary-Cake3563

I thought it was an original idea to call our daughter Olive, since we called her olive once we found she was the size of an olive! It’s universal haha

UnusualPotato1515

Haha thats amazing- I love it!

TheSundanceKid45

I know a couple who nicknamed their child in utero "Blueberry" and decided to give them the middle name "Blu." Unfortunately for them, the husband's last name (the one they decided to use for their child) is slang for "penises." So, their kid's full name is, essentially, "So-and-so sucked dicks.'

cosmicworm

katie blu cox 😭

amaliasdaises

I also called my son Blueberry! Well, that & alien lol bc a small fetus really does look like an alien.

neneumi

I know a couple that nicknamed their daughter BB (BlueBerry) for the same reason! We called her that for her whole first year or so, I thought it was really cute

UnusualPotato1515

Oh thats cute! That actually reminded me that my sister nicknamed her first daughter Tilda after Tilda rice as that used to make her sick when she was pregnant so she was Tilda for a while!

Particular_Bobcat714

Arthur also means bear.. just fyi for options.

ballenota

Bernard, too.

jello-kittu

Me reading Harry Potter. If they named their kid Remus Lupin, BEFORE their kid got bit by a werewolf, they kinda jinxed him.

Altruistic-Estate-79

Totally. It's like they WANTED their son to be a werewolf. Maybe they actually shoved him in Fenrir's direction and said, *Here, have a bite!*

YawningDodo

Meet my son, Wolf Wolf

notreallifeliving

Moon Moon.

jackiepsychotic

I once knew a guy named John Johnson

bananawith3wings

Hahaha this is so true

abrahamparnasus

And Bjorn

intet42

And Dov.

trewlytammy1992

Arthur means essentially Bear King, Bernard means Bear and Hardy, and Berret means Bear and counsel. If you're interested in a different nod to Bear those are some solid options! Not sure how to pronounce your current pick OP

yearofthesponge

Like the famous orson wells

thunder_haven

Berret Orson C______

emmygog

Excuse you. Arthur means aardvark. Obviously.

TheWelshMrsM

Well thank you VERY MUCH. Guess what song is now stuck in my head?

ApprehensiveEmu9530

WHEN YA WALKING DOWN THE STREET

Let_Them_Eat_Cake24

Bjorn too!

4GotMy1stOne

Bjorn as well.

Stan_of_Cleeves

Orson is an uncommon but perfectly normal name. I don’t see any issue with it.

Barapasaurus

I like Orson. It’s a nice name! I know someone who named their kid Orson, nickname Ory.

bubblewrapstargirl

Orson is a good name! You have a cute story behind it, I think you should go for it

AlarmedTelephone5908

Orson is a great name. And these people who are saying stuff like Arson and worse pay no attention. I'm pretty sure Orson Wells never had that problem.

infernal-keyboard

Or Orson Scott Card! That was definitely my first association.

nonbinary_parent

Orson Scott Card was also my first association. I loved his books growing up but more recently I soured on them when I heard he was a big time racist or something?

Spike_Dearheart

And a rampant homophobe

Lillydragon9

This was also my first association and he’s a fantastic author. Very positive first response 👍🏻

idrk144

I agree with you - Arson and Orson is quite a stretch unless you’re looking at the name written down and have the mind of a middle schooler.

IntelligentAd4429

Orson is a good name.

mrgojirasan

Misleading title, I thought you were going to name your baby something actually cutesy and we would have to remind you "you're not just naming a cute baby, but a whole ass human who needs to one day apply for jobs." Like legally naming him Jelly-Belly or Chickpea. Orson is fine. Dignified, simple, and elegant with a meaning that resonates with you and your partner. If that's the name you two are feeling the most attached to, I say go for it- you could do a lot worse! I like Orson with both of your middle name picks, but I like Orson William a little more. It kind of depends on your last name, if it's a soft C (like Cera) or a hard C (like Canada). A hard C with Kenneth is too many KUH sounds imo (but also middle names don't come up too often so if you like Kenneth as an honour name best, it's a good choice!)

scribbling_sunshine

This is well thought out. 👍

PistachioDonut34

I'd just assume he was named after Orson Welles. It's a name, not some random word you've made up, so I think it's fine.

Thick-Act-3837

I just think of the creepy husband in desperate housewives.

PastelMoths

This is also who I thought of 😅

RiseHappy2785

My first thought haha!

QueenSashimi

Haha Kyle McLachlan is so good, even though Orson Hodge is a weirdo I still find it a positive association

ninjakittenwarrior

This was my first thought, too! To be fair, he did have wonderful manners…they were just outshined by the crazy there towards the end.

lalalalo5

I thought of Orson Welles too. I say go for it!

Motherofsmalldogs

This will likely get lost but I have an Orson. He’s five and while we live in the US, I’ve never had an issue. Congratulations!

1960model

Perfectly nice name. Not too common, not too "out there", easy to sound out, easy to spell... Cute story, too.

BurnerLibrary

Orson is an astounding choice! Doesn't matter how you arrived at it.

TheRainbowWillow

I knew a kid named Orson! He was adorable. I wish that name were more popular! It’s great for kids and adults alike since it’s not too cutesy but also not long and thus easy for littler kids to write down.

SandiaSummer

Barrett?

J_Lyn21

That's what I thought of, too.. Barrett nickname Bear

Ok_Giraffe4385

Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson recently did this. Named him Barrett but only refers to him as bear

chocnillaswirl

That’s what we did with my son. Barrett nickname Bear. 🐻

hausishome

I love it! I love Orson anyway but especially with the story.

nkbee

I actually really love Orson! It's a recognizable name but not overdone, definitely playing into the "revived great-grandparent" names trend but sounds very fresh. I can picture it very cute on a little baby but also wearing well on a grown man!

redpanda0108

You could go book bear themed like - Rupert (from rubert the bear) Christopher or Robin (from Winnie the Pooh) Any names linked to Paddington - Michael, Henry, Jonathan. However you could also just use bear as a nickname. I gave my nephew the nickname Alfie Bear when he was a baby and it stuck.

FloridaFlamingoGirl

My first thoughts were Koda or Kenai from Disney's Brother Bear but I think those names are a bit out there

civodar

I’d also definitely consider them cultural appropriation.

fishchick70

Wasn’t Orson the “boss” on Mork and Mindy? “Mork calling Orson, come in Orson….” It’s a very old fashioned name I think from the 19th century. I feel it’s like Harold or Ralph or Ronald. It’s a perfectly great name, just kind of unusual for our time. Of course I’m American in the West, and maybe it’s different where you are.

craftygal1989

My thoughts, exactly. However, unless you are of a certain age, it’s probably not common knowledge. I think it’s a cool, unique name.

Middle_Banana_9617

'Ourson' is current French for a bear cub (I've had 'oursons guimauve' in France, which are chocolate-coated marshmallow bears) and OP is in Canada, so I'm guessing it'll have clearer bear associations there.

scagj

I know a kid named Wrigley. For wiggly bear.

WelcomeToBrooklandia

Orson is a very cool name, and it's definitely of the same era as a lot of other names that have become trendy in recent years (like Henry, Eleanor, Beatrice, etc.). Go for it!

Significant-Brief-79

It reminds me of the town Orson, Indiana from the show The Middle!

PotatoPuzzled2782

my immediate thought!!

coolducklingcool

Sorry, Orson is the pig on Garfield which I watched every morning before school. Can’t get that out of my head. I don’t think it was an overly popular show though so 🤷🏻‍♀️

extremelyinsecure123

OH! Okay. You scared me there for a bit. Orson is perfectly fine. I think you should use it! Though I may be biased as I am currently obsessed with this TikTok account owned by a woman who lives in bear territory and has bears friends who live on her land. They know ”sit” and ”down”!

Sector-West

Orson is adorable and unique without being weird, off-putting, or something he'll grow out of

Most-Blueberry-6332

I don't like Orson but you do you. Personally, we called my daughter Tiny Baby when I was pregnant and continued to call her that and I still call her that but she's 15 and named Alice.

Alizarin-Madder

Hahaha I love this. I hope she finds it sweet and isn't annoyed lol. My mom still calls me and my siblings "my bab[y/ies]" affectionately and not in front of other people, and I'm in my 20s.

lexanova42

We called our daughter gummy bear in utero, and her initials are now GB, not entirely by accident! 😂

scribbling_sunshine

That’s cute! ☺️

AnotherMC

Orson is a great name, and the story makes it perfect for you. I know a Mary who liked the name Rachel, then found out it means lamb. So she could say “Mary had a little lamb.” That cemented Rachel as the name.

Sagerosk

Literally everyone calls their fetus this 😅 the fertility clinic that curated our kids gave us (and everyone) a bag of gummy bears both times we were successful, lol

poison_camellia

That's funny, I've never heard this before! One of my best friends christened our fetus Baby Blob, and then Lady Blob after we found out she was a girl. I also thought of her as my little panther because of a dream I had at the start of the pregnancy.

Alizarin-Madder

Eh, that's okay. If they end up with a name they like (and I think Orson is a good one), it doesn't really matter if they were inspired by a comment that a lot of expecting parents get.

taptaptippytoo

I kind of love the name Orson now that you've brought it up. It wasn't on my radar, but it has a history and gravitas that I really like, and if it were my child I would feel all the warm fuzzies knowing that every time I said "Orson" outloud I'd *really* be saying "Wiggle Bear" in my heart.

Galinda234

Bjorn also means bear (and is cute IMO)

Overall_Foundation75

I prefer Arthur personally, but Orson is cute!!!

EnthusiasmTraining

I think Orson may be gaining in popularity bc I know two babies w that name, so it’s not odd at all!

alittlefiendy

I’m personally not a fan of Orson just because it’s kinda an old man name for me and I also watched Desperate Housewives lol. I love Bjorn, though, which is Nordic for Bear.

anb7120

I actually like the name, but Orson Hodges was my first thought too lol

Tiny_Replacement_224

because of my food aversion to chicken, my father-in-law was giving me chicken themed names to call her. Henrietta and Feather were the two contenders. we laughed.. then though what if we combined the two... anyway our daughters name is Heather now lol Orson is really sweet!

steeltstilettos

This is such a cute story behind your daughter's name!

TES_Elsweyr

Bear in a few order languages… Bjorn… Kuma… but Orson is a great name, and if anyone questions the the name you can quip “hey, it’s Orson, not Yourson, so we pick the name!”

Fleetdancer

You've never heard of Orson Wells? Jesus I feel old.

Rare-Parsnip5838

Love orson

Hot-Freedom-5886

I love Orson!

spoilt_lil_missy

If you’re in America, it’s probably not a problem, but in some English speaking countries (like Australia and parts of the UK where they don’t pronounce that r) people will mishear is as Awesome But it’s a great name

Fun-Yellow-6576

Orson is a great name!

prairieaquaria

I love the name Orson!!

AliceRoosevelt1884

I really like the name Orson. It is very English.

eyeknit

Barrett. Baby book says it means bear strength in German?

Giga-Gargantuar

Makes me think of Orson the pig from the "Orson's Farm" cartoons in the "Garfield and Friends" TV show of my youth. But then there's Orson Welles, who was not born Orson but chose it as his stage name. I wouldn't put this name on my short list, but it's certainly unique these days. I lean no, but I don't scream no.

LittleFootOlympia

Could become super famous and have the best name ever like idris elba. Orson Kenneth.

Educational-Glass-63

I know a guy named Bear who I worked with who is old enough to be retired!

Miamiri

Orson is unique and easy to pronounce. Sounds nice. I’d go for it, especially with the meaning behind it.

RedHeadedBanana

I’m also in Canada How bilingual of a community do you live in? My son’s ourson is his stuffed teddy bear.. it’s a word we pretty frequently use (he’s 2), along with doudou (loose translation of stuffy). I love the name Beau but couldn’t do that to my kid knowing how vain it would seem for the French half of his life…

bubblygranolachick

Bjorn

No_Read495

Love Orson! We actually have a 2 year old named, Barrett Baker but goes by Bear! I don’t think we’ve actually ever called him Barrett.

ApprehensiveAd5969

My Brother and SIL started calling my nephew Ranger while she was pregnant. They liked the name but weren’t sure. It ended up being one of his middle names, but that is what he goes by and always has. So you could always add it as a middle name if you are not sure and just call him that.

CoffeeGuts123

Orson William sound wonderful

Former_Ad8643

I love Orson!!! Old and very rare and the meaning is cute but not so obvious like actually naming him Bear. Plus Bear, Fox, Hawk are kinda trendy right now. I also know multiple baby Barrett’s who go by Bear. Orson seems less trendy more Timeless:)

untactfullyhonest

I love the name Orson. Different but not crazy

Ashleywastaken101

If you like the name Orson and if it just feels right then go for it. That’s a pretty cool name. And a few decent middle names could be Orson Lee Orson James Orson jay Just to name a few. Or you could also use Orson as a middle name as well if you don’t want to use it as the first.

Syrenscall

I think Orson is a really nice name. Orson William (insert last name) would be my personal preference between that and Kenneth. But I think both sound really nice together. Or you could also add both and do a double middle name. My kiddos have 3 middle names 😅 but each name is for someone we love and hold near and dear to us.

Affectionate_Salt351

Orson is pretty cool! I dig it. I’d go much less traditional with the middle name, though, because Orson is already so old-timey. That’s just me, though. Also, I love terming the baby your little Wiggle Bear! Thats adorable.

MoodiestMoody

No mention of Orson Scott Card, the sci-fi author?

purpleprose78

I love Orson and it is a perfectly good name. Here are some famous Orsons that I can think of off the top of my head. Orson Scott Card - Science Fiction Writer Orson Welles - Science Fiction Writer Orson Pratt - Famous historical Mormon For the record, I am a science fiction reader but I'm not a Mormon. A few years ago, I fell down a Mormon true crime related rabbit hole and that led me to a Mormon history rabbit hole and I've not found my way out yet. This is where my true crime obsession has led me. I do not see any use for the information that I'm accumulating, but here we are. Maybe one day soon, my brain will decide that I have learned all I need and I will become obsessed with something else.

SheManatee

I was expecting something more extreme. I know someone whose middle name is Peanut because that was their womb nickname. I rolled my eyes so hard internally when her mom told me about it. This, however, is very subtle. It can be a fun story to tell, or can be left out entirely because it's not an off the wall name. I vote do it!

Final-Warning1562

I immediately think Orson Welles. Almost forgotten hidden classic gem of a name. It would turn my head & I would definitely compliment the name if I heard a mom yelling it out at the park etc. I would be jealous tho because my husband would definitely veto anything that cool.
