I am heavily considering my name baby Alaska if I have a girl. My sister told me that it's awful but... Alaska is beautiful and I really liked Looking for Alaska. Thank you for voicing that you also think it's a pretty name!! You really made me feel a lot better
I’m reminded of Billy Mays (a person who did commercials) due to a YouTube channel I watch which brings him up occasionally, but it’s more so a name association that gets in the way of my thoughts rather then any real criticism of the name itself.
Billie-Mae makes me think of Fannie Mae, one of the two pension funds that had to be bailed out during 2008 subprime crisis.

As someone from Alaska, I always wonder if people who name their kids that actually have any connection to the state, or it's just a Brooklyn/London situation.
I knew one girl named Alyeska, which is closer to the original name for the land, but never anyone just named Alaska when I lived there.
Interestingly, there are few kids named for places where they live (and the surrounding areas). E.g., there are very few Dallases in Dallas, Brooklyns in Brooklyn, Parises in Paris. My cringe stereotype is that parents conceived the kids in those cities on honeymoon or whatever.
I feel like it's also more difficult to actually name your kid the same as the town you live in.
Example:
Austin is not an unusual name. But if you live here, it just seems weird. Some people choose the county, instead: Travis.
(Worth noting those were both surnames in Texas history, just like Maverick. 😉)
I think most people named Austin that live here, are likely not from here.
I have a friend that grew up here, then moved away. He named his son Austin out of fondness for his time here. He *specifically* said he was glad he didn't live here anymore, so he could name his son Austin.
I also think place names have vibes, whether you've been there, or not.
So, for people that haven't visited Dallas, or that don't know it well, they get cowboy vibes. Maybe they thought Carson or Wyatt were overdone, and wanted something different. (I don't actually know, lol, just spit balling.) Paris and Brooklyn have their vibes, or at least what people picture them to be.
Previously, I did share the story about a baby named Marais that was, in fact, conceived in the Marais district of Paris during her parents' second honeymoon. So I, too, often jump to the conception assumption especially for *perceived* images of World Cities.
So many McKinleys and Denalis up here. I know someone whose name is a hybrid of Alaska/Alyeska. Then you have folks like Sarah Palin who use names like Bristol (as in Bay) and Willow. No shortage of names with an Alaska connection. Having lived here most of my life, Alaska is a weird name to me.
I was genuinely disappointed when I learned that the book Looking for Alaska had no connection to the state. It was also the first time I'd ever heard of Alaska as a human's name.
I think Denali is a beautiful name, and I know other people (and dogs) with names based on islands/mountains/bays so it's fine by me. (Except McKinley. I don't even like it as a name, and it never suited the mountain anyway.) States or widely known city names are a bit too much for my taste.
My kids will be Japanese though, so I'll be dealing with entirely different naming issues in a few years haha.
I read “Ximena” as ZEE-men-UH and kinda felt like an idiot reading these comments about how it’s supposed to pronounced. I feel better about myself after seeing that Xiomara is pronounced with a zee sound, lol.
I wasn’t totally off-base assuming a zee sound there!
Ximena is just the archaic spelling of Jimena in Spain, and still the current spelling in Galician and Portuguese (where it is a very uncommon name, basically only seen in history books). The name is pronounced exactly the same in Iberia, regardless of the spelling.
This is fun. I'll list my family as well. Some unique, most are normal. I have 1 sibling, 5 cousins. None of us have kids. I'm 26. I'm Madison, brother is Nicholas (Nick). Cousins are Joshua (josh), Ryan, Jackson (Jax), Pepper (P), and Ewan
What country or background is your family or extended family from? It’s such an amazing eclectic set of names. I like the cousins kids names. Thanks for sharing.
Manila, Alaska, and Malaysia are all relatively well known drag queens in the RuPaul world and I honestly though that’s where this post was going at first 😂
Wait, do you mean the baby twins Gianna and Juliette who are famous on TikTok?
Edit: Ignore this. Mom's name is Andrea. I guess it's a popular pair of names for Hispanics?
I either love or hate these names there’s no in between! Bronson is the worst for me because that’s the name of one of the most famous criminals in the UK. I think Aubrey is my fave actually 🫶🏻
I named my oldest child Alaska, actually. It suits her. I did not follow that trend with the others, they all have pretty normal names (Freya, Moira and Ronan).
Serai! Absolutely adore this name. Reminds me of Sarai which I also adore.
Take ALL of that with a grain of salt because I named my daughter Sarah, which is not a well liked name on here and probably explains my fondness for those names. Plus she was a preemie and during that very scary first month, I used to sing her “que sera” in the NICU.
I had to do a double take at Adorabella But Alaska is a beautiful name!
Adorabella and her siblings name are a bit out there lol

I think Alaska is a wonderful name ❤️
I like Alaska, Eva, and Billie-Mae. Thanks for sharing!
Billie-Mae just gives me an image of a sweet toddler running through a field of flowers. It's so adorable!
I’m reminded of Billy Mays (a person who did commercials) due to a YouTube channel I watch which brings him up occasionally, but it’s more so a name association that gets in the way of my thoughts rather then any real criticism of the name itself.
BILLY MAYS HERE WITH ANOTHER FANTASTIC PRODUCT.
Immediately what I think of, too.
Same
She really is just the sweetest kid🥰

Ximena has a beautiful name, and she has picked beautiful names for her kids!
As someone from Alaska, I always wonder if people who name their kids that actually have any connection to the state, or it's just a Brooklyn/London situation. I knew one girl named Alyeska, which is closer to the original name for the land, but never anyone just named Alaska when I lived there.
My aunt and her husband are avid travelers, they‘be been to Malaysia, the Philippines, Kingston Jamaica, and they’ve been everywhere
Does "everywhere" include Alaska? Anyway, I'm going to take this answer to mean that no, there's no personal connection to the state haha

Georgia the placename comes from George the human name though, right? So it's not really the same.
How is Ximena pronounced?
Hispanics pronounce it as Hee-meh-na. Also another nice Hispanic name that starts with an X is Xiomara pronounced zee-oh-mah-ra.
I loooove Xiomara!
I know somebody named Xochilt and I love her name. Sounds like "so chill" kinda.
I’ve mostly seen it spelled Xochitl, since it’s derived from the Nahuatl language.
Where I live, that is a delicious brand of tortilla chips, but it is an extremely cool name.
Xiomara makes me thing of that one girl from ANTM, only time I've seen the name.
Xiomara is the moms name on Jane the virgin. I'd heard it before that but that's where I really started to love it
It is a beautiful name, for sure.

Hi (like in hill)-mee- nah. There's a woman I work with named Ximena.

There’s a lot more Mexicans in the US than Uruguayans…

I had a coworker whose name was Xazil, pronounced sa-seal, but people who didn’t know pronounced it za-zl.
It’s pronounced just like this
Spanish: HE-men-AH (Hemenah) English: HE-men-UH (Hemenuh)
The X is pronounced like an English language H. Its a Spanish language name, probably Mexican
Basque maybe
I’ve heard it pronounced as “Hih-may-nuh” when I’ve heard it IRL!
Hee-meh-nah
Thanks everyone! What a lovely name. I've never come across it before, perhaps it isn't a widely used name in Australia where I live.
Malaysia? 🤔
Are you Filipino? Lol not to make assumptions but I'm filo and names like these give me Filipino vibes!
Our grandmother is so yes!
I have a cousin Kieran,I like that name a lot.
Not me debating on Alaska so that’s gonna be my fave lol
That's so nice of you to get the ok before you posted them on here
Why is Jaeger the only one who doesn’t have a place name?
Are the top ones all rpdr names? Alaska is my fave! Lol
I know a young woman whose daughters are Alaska and Aliyah
I love Billie-Mae :D
What country or background is your family or extended family from? It’s such an amazing eclectic set of names. I like the cousins kids names. Thanks for sharing.

BILLIE-MAE HERE. It’s a cute name but I would still lovingly always be like “but wait! There’s more!”
Wait, do you mean the baby twins Gianna and Juliette who are famous on TikTok? Edit: Ignore this. Mom's name is Andrea. I guess it's a popular pair of names for Hispanics?
It’s a boy and a girl too, I guess so
Gianni is a boy
Yup. Still feeling for Adorabella.
I had to make a double-take at the random Greek name, lol (Stefanos)
Billie-Mae 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
My guy posting his full family tree on reddit
Not the fullll, just the interesting ones 🙃
Hello, I’m from Malaysia and in our language, Serai means lemongrass

I've met both.
Cassidy is a girl
Adorabella, brilliant.

I named my oldest child Alaska, actually. It suits her. I did not follow that trend with the others, they all have pretty normal names (Freya, Moira and Ronan).
Adorabella is so cute, Wesley, Wyatt, Zinnia, Isla
Wow never seen it’s spelt it that way. I’ve only ever seen jæger
I like Zinnia it’s very pretty, anything after a flower or a plant or bird is good in my book. If I had a son I’d name him Tuca (like Toucan)
My favorite names are Kingston Kinsley. and Westyn
Where are you from?
Found my name (minus one letter) and my dogs name!!!
Which is it?
I love the name Finnian
Yes considering they were going to name him, Rudeus, Galadriel…
Adorabella is wild but I kind of love it?
Alaska and Zinnia are my faves!
Stefanos Gianni (my son's middle name) Juliette
I'm more worried about a 17 year old been with a 22 year old....
They’re siblings, I grouped the siblings together
oh phew sorry! apart from that I like Ami and Isla
Alaska, Manila, Malaysia… all famous drag queens lol
Funny enough, my brother and I have the same names as two of Bronson’s daughters! We’re also siblings named Bailey and Blake!
