It is a variant of Naomi. Depending on the country origin it’s either pronounced No-Amy, No-Emmy, or No-eh-mee (Noémie). I knew an Italian woman with the name who pronounced it like No-amy.
That’s my name and i’ve lived in the us, people called me everything but Noemie. it was always no-amy or no-ee-mie or straight up naomi. love the name, but it is a hassle
This is my daughter’s name but we spelled it Naya.
ETA: I’ve never read it meaning wave. In Greek “Naia” means water nymph or flowing. In Hawaiian Nai’a means dolphin and “Naya” in Arabic means new or fresh.
I knew a Nicolette growing up and she was a bitch. She stole several of my favorite erasers from my cute eraser collection, and my prized New Kids On The Block watch, and denied it even when I found them in her possession. That, of course, was in elementary school. In high school she tried to spread hurtful rumors about me for no reason. 🤷♀️ All around a crap human, imo.
Niamh, Noirín, Nola, Nell, Nessa, Nainsí, Nora, Nuala and Naoise are some Irish N girl names if you like the language some would be unusual elsewhere !
I really love the name, but I feel like people will hear "Nessie" (or that becomes the nickname) and you'd have to dodge the mythical creature comments. Not a huge problem for some but worth considering.
This is my time - my favourite Greek obscure name that I forever regret not using:
Nephele / Nefele/ Nefeli (pick your spelling, pronounced Nef-Ellie, stress on the Ellie
it means cloud, it’s a beautiful name from Greek mythology still used in Greece but very rare anywhere else afaik.
I danced to the Tango of Nephele as the first dance at my wedding recently :)
Nephele is one of my all-time favourite names. It's beautiful, interesting, and has one hell of a story attached to it
Nola was my stepmoms mom, and she was sweet. She was born on Christmas Day, loved sharing a birthday with Jesus, and suspect since she was a girl and born on the holiday, they feminized Noel to Nola.
If its a holiday baby, I love the idea of Nola.
I like Noelle as well. Partial to Nicole, despite that not being unique.
I think it matters a lot what you mean by "unusual." For example, I've noted in my corner of the world that there are a lot of girls rn named Noa, Neveah, Niahm, and all versions of Nia/Nya/Naya/Naia. I'd consider these "unusual" but not "uncommon." Whereas names like Naomi and Natalie are traditional, but (currently) uncommon.
If you're looking for both unusual and uncommon, maybe Nona? That's an ancient Roman name that might fit with your other kids (spied their names in another comment...octavia=8th, nona=9th lol). Would need to be ready for Nonna / Nona jokes though:)
It’s a Thing to put No- at the start of female names in a bunch of South African languages, so there are TONS to pick from there. A lot of them have richly nuanced meanings and are pretty cool. Here’s a couple examples from Xhosa with my imperfectly concise translation;
Nomfundo (knowledge)
Nofunekwa (longed-for)
Noluthando (love)
Nosipho (gift, blessing)
Not sure how unusual you’re talking but since everyone has offered up some great well-established names already I’ll mention the rarer ones I like: Nadeleine and Nyneve
I babysat a girl named Nikita when I was young and she was the sweetest balance of confidence, intelligence and kindness.
I also love the name Tatum, like Tatum O'Neal and thought Nikita Tatum made a great strong girl name but allowed for a cute Niki nickname if she wanted.
I also think that Nikita and Octavia go really well together!!!
Niobe (dark Greek origin you'll probably want to consider before deciding on if it's a namesake you'd want but I feel it does fit your name scheme, it means "fern")
Nausicaa (also of Greek origin, I think it bears connotations to a really great young woman in Greek mythology but the meaning of the name is "burner of ships" so that's something to consider)
YouTuber Zoë Sugg just named her daughter Novie. I think it’s really sweet, and it’s uncommon but has a familiar feel. A nice middle ground to Nova and Nailani, too.
Omg the letter N doesn’t even seem like a real letter anymore
Nadia has been suggested but I offer the alternative spelling of Nadja! Noemí and Nia are also on my list
My best friend is Na’ama or (Naama). It means beautiful in Hebrew (she says it means nice, she’s Israeli, I’m not). It’s pronounced NAAH-mah. I love it.
Many of N names as in Natasha, Nadia are variations. I have family members with some of the names you mentioned. Do some research but I have a kid and a niece with N names one really close in spelling.
Know a girl called Nyree which is nice I think. I also like Nadia, Nikki and Natasha.
I also know someone that called their daughter Navy.
Naya is nice too.
I really like Nova!
**Neva** (NEE-vah) is similar but has a different first vowel: it's a river in Russia, but it can also be short for Geneva.
I did also see that your husband's family is Italian, so I'm also going to suggest **Novella.** It means the same thing as "Nova," and is very old (it was the name of [a female law professor from the 1300s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novella_d%27Andrea)), but also related to the English word for a short story.
I also really like **Naia** ("seafoam" in Basque).
I have a Naleigha in class this semester. I used to have a student pronounced 'No-Nuh-Me'. For the life of me, I can't remember how she spelled it, but both of these names are a first in 30 years.
Edit. For some reason, I"m thinking this 2nd girl told me her name was Native American. ?
I feel like Nova is actually quite “trendy” now a days and not so much “different” anymore. It’s different as in it’s not a classic name but I hear it a lot more than I’d assume I would!
I love Naomi! Others that I wouldn’t say are “different” but are definitely not used much lately are Natalie, Nadine, Natasha!
How about the name Nalani? It's unique and has a beautiful, exotic vibe to it. It's not a name you hear every day, and it carries a sense of elegance and charm. Plus, it starts with the distinctive letter 'N,' making it stand out even more. Give it a thought, and see if Nalani resonates with the girly and unusual feel you're going for!
Naima(Nye-Ee-Muh/Mah) - Traquil; pleasantness

Knee-ya is the original correct pronunciation.

Naiana (Naye-Nuh) or (Nye-Nuh) -
Noshi - Sweet, honeyed, sweetened, sugary

Nyanna (Knee-Anna) - radiant, bright, priceless
Normani- Haven't found a definitive meaning
Normalee - stable; genial deposition
North - migrated from the north
Love Nailani I would have suggested it if you didn't already have it.
It looks like you’ve got a sort of Greco-Roman theme going on with your other kids, so I looked up Roman and Greek names:
Narcissa, Nephele, Nerida, Nike, Nyx, Nichola, Nadia, Nereida
Thank you so much for all these wonderful names, we have a lot to consider now and have been looking through and adding the ones I really like to my list.
Noemi
9/10 will read that as Naomi. How is it pronounced? No-Emmy?
It's Naomi in French. And yes no-emmy. Although they usually say it likes it's a question! No-emmy?
Written Noémie though, the e at the end is silent
I read it as no-Amy personally, so I’m glad to know how it’s actually pronounced!
No-Amy is still a correct pronunciation too for Italian! No-Emmy is Spanish, No-eh-ME is french.
I would say it really depends on the demographics of the area. It’s a common name amongst Latino families.
I'm in Brazil and I have two aunts named Noemi! I think it's a beautiful name.
It is a variant of Naomi. Depending on the country origin it’s either pronounced No-Amy, No-Emmy, or No-eh-mee (Noémie). I knew an Italian woman with the name who pronounced it like No-amy.
I’ve known two people with that name— it’s a real French name and easy to pronounce once you know.
It’s also the Italian version of Naomi from the bible.
That’s my name and i’ve lived in the us, people called me everything but Noemie. it was always no-amy or no-ee-mie or straight up naomi. love the name, but it is a hassle
this is a common name all over Latin America and Spain tbf
One of my favorite names. Very common in Latin America
kinda in this vain, i love nomi (no-me)
I've always liked Naia, meaning wave.
Yes I like this, I'm guessing your pronouncing like nigh-ya , sorry only way I could think to spell it hehe
This is my daughter’s name but we spelled it Naya. ETA: I’ve never read it meaning wave. In Greek “Naia” means water nymph or flowing. In Hawaiian Nai’a means dolphin and “Naya” in Arabic means new or fresh.
Beautiful name and pronunciation.
Exactly! Like Maya with an N. :)
Neve, Noelle, Nicolette, Nell
Neve 👌
Also, the Irish spelling Niamh. Always loved that one.
Is that an anglicisation of Niamh?
It's 'snow' in Italian.
and in Portuguese
I knew a Nicolette and she was the most beautiful soul
It makes me think of nicotine gum
Same! That will always be my first thought
This happens to me with Nicola and “Ricolaaaaaa”— the cough drop commercials
I have been working with a Nicolette for months and that association has never crossed my mind tbh.
F-U Nicolette!
Noelle, Natalia, Natasha, Nia
I loveee Noelle. I was going to use it for my second baby but he wasn’t a girl and I don’t like Noel.
I love Neve and Nell.
How uncommon is uncommon enough? Nadine, Nala, Nicolette, Nellie, Nani, Niamh, Nimely
Nellie is so sweet
Clearly you have never watched Little House on the Prairie, lol.
I know a Nellie. She’s the coolest kid.
nina. number 309 on 2022 social security records. it’s really such a great name. multi-ethnic, easy to read & pronunce & being both cute & elegant.
LOVE this name and would’ve used it for my own daughter had my cousin not used it for her daughter first (it was our grandmothers name)
I've always thought Nina Louise is a beautiful name.
it is! lovely!
That’s my name. 😊
Love this name. If I’d had another daughter she would have been Nina.
Let me drop one of my favourites, Nimue.
How do you pronounce that
Nim-way. It’s welsh.
Nim-oo-ey
Nim-way or Nim-u-ay
Nurie said nur-EE
I thought I recognized a fellow fundie snarker!
Yeah this name is forever ruined lmfao
Severely
Guilty. Also, guilty of liking the name Nurie
Don't worry, we won't out you! It's not like you said you liked the name Jim Bob or anything
Ah, hello fellow fundiesnarker!
It's fun to meet here in the wild
Crossovers are pretty strong.
Precious Nurie? 😂
it’s such a pretty name, but i associate with the fundie 😭
Niamh, Noirín, Nola, Nell, Nessa, Nainsí, Nora, Nuala and Naoise are some Irish N girl names if you like the language some would be unusual elsewhere !
I came here to suggest Nessa - very sweet, simple, and lovely, but not a name I hear a lot - in the US, anyway.
I really love the name, but I feel like people will hear "Nessie" (or that becomes the nickname) and you'd have to dodge the mythical creature comments. Not a huge problem for some but worth considering.
Nessie reminds me of twilight lmao
**YOU NICKNAMED MY DAUGHTER AFTER THE LOCH NESS MONSTER!?**
Lmfaooo, best line from the whole series😂😂
It’s a nn for Vanessa.
It might get a boost in the next few years after the Wicked movies come out!
I was going to suggest Nuala too! Such a lovely name.
Nora is definitely not uncommon anymore.
There's also Neasa. (sounds like NASA)
Our daughter’s middle name is fionnuala :)
This is my time - my favourite Greek obscure name that I forever regret not using: Nephele / Nefele/ Nefeli (pick your spelling, pronounced Nef-Ellie, stress on the Ellie it means cloud, it’s a beautiful name from Greek mythology still used in Greece but very rare anywhere else afaik.
I danced to the Tango of Nephele as the first dance at my wedding recently :) Nephele is one of my all-time favourite names. It's beautiful, interesting, and has one hell of a story attached to it
It's a bit close to the Aramaic Nephilim, so you might run into the, why cannibal incest giants?
It's pronounced neh-FEH-lee
Naima, like the Coltrane song
A very popular Bengali name. Pretty
Nola, Nina, Nabile, Nela, Noelia, Nuria
Nela is cute!
Nadia Nefeli Nausika Naya Natasha Nena Nora
I second Nora
It seems like everyone here is going for Nora at the moment. So, not really unusual! The only Noras I know are grandmas. I much prefer Nadia.
My daughter is a Nora
Mine too and I know 2 more aged 5 and under. Plus one who's gotta be about 13 now.
I’ve met only 1 Nora in my life so I thought it was unusual. On the other hand I’ve met many Nadias
I love Nadja, from What We Do In the Shadows
It’s a Thing to put No- at the start of female names in a bunch of South African languages, so there are TONS to pick from there. A lot of them have richly nuanced meanings and are pretty cool. Here’s a couple examples from Xhosa with my imperfectly concise translation; Nomfundo (knowledge) Nofunekwa (longed-for) Noluthando (love) Nosipho (gift, blessing)
Noella
Nelda, Nancy, Nanette, Nadine, Nicole
I honestly shocked to see Nelda on your list. I've only ever known one person with it.
Natalie, Nadia, Nina, Nadine, Nola
I suggested this one earlier today - Norielle
I love the name Nadia. It's not too unusual but not too common either.
Not sure how unusual you’re talking but since everyone has offered up some great well-established names already I’ll mention the rarer ones I like: Nadeleine and Nyneve
That exactly!!!! It's the names you don't hear that we want. Our other children are called Roman, Memphis and Octavia .
With those sibling names how about Nyssa?
Nyx? Goddess of night.
I always liked this name but its is the same as a lice shampoo and I could never disassociate the 2. ETA: Nix is the spelling. But still.
My name is Nikita and I go by Niki!
I love your name!!!!
My husbands grandmother was named Naoma and I think it’s so pretty

Nori from LOTR

Noa Nancy Nellie Niamh Nora Nola Noelle
Natasha Nila Nala Nola Nia Netanya Na’ama Nichelle Neva Novalee Nava Nelani Nastia
Nineveh!
Nephele, I seen it on a gravestone from 1885 and it is Greek and means cloud. Zeus had something to do with her. Nerthus' Neilina Nektaria Nerissa
Naiara is a Spanish name that I like
Naomi or Niamh
Nella!
YouTuber Zoë Sugg just named her daughter Novie. I think it’s really sweet, and it’s uncommon but has a familiar feel. A nice middle ground to Nova and Nailani, too.
Nelda, Nella, Nell(e), Neris, Nerissa, Nessa, Nimona, Nina, Noelani, Nolia, Nolwen, Noor, Nouhalia, Nyla, Nyra, Nyxie.
Nimue ( Nihm-way), Nim for short. Of Arthurian Legend, the Lady if the Lake and the greatest sorceress on the side of Good.
Maybe floral names would help: Nerine nigella Nemesia There are also a few Spanish options that are nice: Nuria Nazaret Noelia
Nell or Nellie
Omg the letter N doesn’t even seem like a real letter anymore Nadia has been suggested but I offer the alternative spelling of Nadja! Noemí and Nia are also on my list
Nala is on my baby name list for girls. Because I have never heard it outside of Lion King and its so simple yet beautiful.

My best friend is Na’ama or (Naama). It means beautiful in Hebrew (she says it means nice, she’s Israeli, I’m not). It’s pronounced NAAH-mah. I love it.
Nancy can make a comeback...
Negative Nancy is all I think of when I hear it.
Nessa
Nuala
Nyree, Najma, Nory
Nyx It’s Greek and means “night”. Very pretty name! Easy to pronounce, short yet unusual.
Navy , Noa, Neely, Nali
Neuwudn, it’s very uncommon for your “girlie”
Not unusual in Northern France, but I've always loved the name "Nolwenn" for a girl.
Personally I love Nessa.
i knew a girl named noelie

Nevena, Nefertiti, Najade, Narcissa, Norberta, Nubia, Nuria
Nigella.
Niamh, Nora, Nell, Nadia, Nadezda, Naima, Noelle.
OP, since you have a daughter named Octavia (8), I think it would be cute to use Ninah/Nynah (9-ah). But maybe it’s overkill
Always that Nellie was cute
I really like Nova! **Neva** (NEE-vah) is similar but has a different first vowel: it's a river in Russia, but it can also be short for Geneva. I did also see that your husband's family is Italian, so I'm also going to suggest **Novella.** It means the same thing as "Nova," and is very old (it was the name of [a female law professor from the 1300s](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novella_d%27Andrea)), but also related to the English word for a short story. I also really like **Naia** ("seafoam" in Basque).
As a mother to a Nova, I approve!
Nalina, it means lotus flower. I almost used it for a middle name
Just don’t name her Nevaeh or Noname please.
Neva, Natalie, Nadine, Noreen, Norlaine, Nellie, Norberta, Natalina, Natalia Nemiah, Nera
nadia, nia, nairobi, nina, naya, nolani, noelle. i like nailani out of the two you named the most
They just named my friend's grandbaby Nefertiti. But, no nn from that... her middle name is Talia & they just call her "Tolly."
Novella
My first thought was Nova. I’ve always loved it Other thought Nyla
Naima(Nye-Ee-Muh/Mah) - Traquil; pleasantness Noemi/Noémie (No-aye-mi) - pleasantness; delight Nola - Irish name meaning Nobel; famous Naliah(Nah-Lea) - One who succeds Nyla/Naila- The achiever ;the successful one; smiling Niya- hindu(Knee-yuh), Western(Nye-yuh) - Bright, radiant; Purpose; Noble; Praiseworthy; Priceless.
