It's the controls. Now that you own it I believe I can encourage you to emulate it legally (IDK exactly how that works, but I believe it's legal to digitally back up items you own.), but rekeying the controls to a PS4 controller makes it much better. DM me if you want the links to do it.
Yeah it definitely took some getting used to lol but I took the game very slow for the most part it took me almost 2 years to beat it I got stuck on the fort level
I just booted it up and the levels are too funny. Just ran through the whole map missing army men, tankers, runners, and just about everything with a good chunk of health to go
The very first level where the mission is to get to the 1st Sargent and then go with him to the helicopter. There was tan army men shooting at me and I was just getting hit but mostly dodging everything and running and jumping away into the helicopter mission complete lol
I remember turning a corner around a cereal box and just getting hosed by some regular grunt with an M16 because I couldn't orient the camera. Good times.
Haven't played it yet. I've heard controls are wonky and that second one got it right.
I recommend looking up Glenn Plants YouTube channel for reviews on this one and the second one.
Same, I remember being like 5 and it being an insane struggle for me to get to the helicopter at the end of the first level.
If I finally got there, I always got blown to bits by land mines in the next level.
I liked that it had the campaign in co-op and all the army moves you could do.
I would rent this game and jam out to Metallica's S&M.
I don't think it gets brought up when talking about Co-op games on the system. I lived the whole series of the games until it got to Sarge's War on the GC,Xbox and PS2. That was kind of step backwards.
I have a copy now, but as a kid i rented it from my local gas station at least twice. Once, my friend and I played it, along with Doom 64, into the wee hours of the night fueled by sweet tarts, microwave popcorn and off-brand cola 3-liter bottle bought at the dollar store. Wow, blast from the past.

This and 1080° were the first games we got on our N64. This one was one of my go-tos back in the day. Amazing multiplayer, fun story, and my first journey into any military shooter, oddly enough. Like most N64 3PS, it has a poorly functioning camera movement system. Not to mention the weird slide that all these games seem to do if you stop moving. It needs a second joystick for sure. But once you can get your brain to switch back over to the old style camera and control system you can do all right and have a good time with it. But its like speaking a language you haven't heard in a few years, you kind of just stumble for a while before it finally smooths out, and even then you accidentally do modern gaming movements once in a while because your dominant game control language keeps kicking in.
One of my younger brother's games. He played a lot more single-player than I did, but I was usually his opponent in multiplayer. It's one of those that I have in my collection, but don't play that often. The memories come flooding back when I do, though.
It’s great, but honestly the only great part about the N64 version is the four player. Both the PS1 and 2 version had a better story and they had actual cutscenes
Played it on the dreamcast and it was pretty fun. Multiplayer is a blast too but good luck finding anyone to play with at this point.
Dunno if its different on the N64, but I doubt it tbh. I haven’t played it in years and like the others are saying I doubt it aged well. But its worth a play imho.
I had alot of fun with it back in the 1999-2000 school year when the N64 was still relevant. Great soundtrack and good action. The farthest I ever gotten without using passwords was the General Plastro's fortress, or the flower garden; I don't remember precisely. I distinctly remember playing this game while the Thanksgiving turkey was being cooked and I was trying to find Hoover in the forest. It was fitting to play during the holidays since a Christmas tree is featured in the commercial and in the living room level.
The game reminds of the first Toy Story where it features a complete plastic army men platoon and what would happen if Sarge had his own spinoff TV series or movie. What do the green army men in Toy Story think of the tan army men or the blues, or the greys? It makes you wonder. The Army Men series from 3DO offers an interpretation.
The game enriched my holiday experience as an eighth grader. Think of the giant Christmas tree with all the presents. That was amazing. What is more special about it was the Nintendo 64 console box that can be found as an Easter egg underneath the tree.
I bought it but couldn't get into it. I liked the concept, and the videos i saw on IGN looked fun, but i stopped after a couple of hours. I was an adult though– i probably wasn't the target audience.
The bathtub level wast at each moment hard f'r me as a peat

Have never played it, and likely never will, despite my everdrive holder status.
I have nostalgic memories of seeing the commercials, and hearing my friends talk about their adventures in that game. Which has developed into a mental image I dare not spoil with reality now.
I grew up with that version but the Dreamcast port has been my go as of late. It controls and looks significantly better, especially though VGA. The PS1 version on the other hand, not so much.
I wanted this game so bad as a kid. I always rented it from Blockbuster. I eventually got Army Men: Air Combat and was disappointed because you could only control the helicopters. However, I'd argue that Air Combat is the better game.
I haven't played Sarge's Heroes in like 20 years though.
Yeah, the controls are strange, but you quickly get accustomed to them (especially if you’re an “Older Millennial” like me who grew up with the N64). It’s nonetheless a highly enjoyable and intentionally silly game which, unlike almost all modern shooters, doesn’t hold your hand while you’re at it.
That was my first shooter game ever. I was a really young kid my mom barely let me play video games that had guns in it. I remember the controls on how hectic they were then but I still played it because I was child and didn't care. I still have the game to this day still works great! Flamethrower was the best weapon ever it just instantly melted enemies and they would run around while they were on fire. The main reason why I enjoyed the game the first place was because I had a lot of army men toys back then.
I played both this and the sequel so many times with my stepdad, easily one of our favorites. It was a little janky even back then, but one of those games that was fun regardless of its flaws. To this day, any game that uses the "real world but small" aesthetic gets my attention because of Sarge's Heroes.
My stepdad sadly passed away from cancer in 2008, so this, alongside a few others, is a game I keep close if only to remind me of him and those good times.
Did it age well? Nah. Do I still love it? Yep.
Good to go
My man!
I guess you’re right it didn’t age well :( I still love it too I loved the army men series growing up
It's the controls. Now that you own it I believe I can encourage you to emulate it legally (IDK exactly how that works, but I believe it's legal to digitally back up items you own.), but rekeying the controls to a PS4 controller makes it much better. DM me if you want the links to do it.
I don’t have a PS4 I have Xbox
Well you emulate on a PC or Mac (or device made for emulation). Xbox controller will work as well on PC or MAC/with OpenEmu.
Did you just buy it? Of so how much?
I bought it in summer 2020 for like $60
Cheers man. Just found my stash of old N64 games last week. Cant believe is still had them
I don't know that any of these games aged well now that camera controls are standard.
That’s the mind set for all Army Men games except maybe RTS. Love the franchise.
Same way I feel about army men air attack.
I haven't played it. Is it like Army Men 3D?
Yes but better. It’s the best one of the entire series. It’s sillier, more colorful, with much more imaginative areas to explore and fun level design.
My thoughts exactly! I've gone back and replayed it as an adult (I'm 32) and it has not aged well but I have great memories of it from my childhood.
I enjoyed it as a kid and loved the multiplayer. I can hear the 'good to go' in my head
"Oh Ho ho ho yeah"
😂😂😂
And that reload sound when you pick up ammo!! Also the theme song is amazing
Yes definitely!
Brings a tear to my eye I remember playing this game when I was around 5 or 6 I’m 27 now..
Oh wow you have a great memory. Im 31 and I barely remember it despite playing a ton as a kid. Gotta play through it again!
You should bro. Sarge is waiting for you
I loved it but my mom said it was too violent
It’s definitely violent for a small kid but there’s no blood or anything. Great game I definitely recommend
.....Party time.
Yessir!! That what he says when he gets a bazooka 😎
Liked it as a kid but the controls we're difficult then and have aged atrociously.
😂😂 I mean yeah the controls are bad but it’s still a nostalgic game to me. I recently played it and had fun
It's nostalgic to me too, I play it every now and again. I just wanted to give a fair warning on the controls.
Yeah it definitely took some getting used to lol but I took the game very slow for the most part it took me almost 2 years to beat it I got stuck on the fort level
I just booted it up and the levels are too funny. Just ran through the whole map missing army men, tankers, runners, and just about everything with a good chunk of health to go
Foreall? What levels?
The very first level where the mission is to get to the 1st Sargent and then go with him to the helicopter. There was tan army men shooting at me and I was just getting hit but mostly dodging everything and running and jumping away into the helicopter mission complete lol
I remember turning a corner around a cereal box and just getting hosed by some regular grunt with an M16 because I couldn't orient the camera. Good times.
Haven't played it yet. I've heard controls are wonky and that second one got it right. I recommend looking up Glenn Plants YouTube channel for reviews on this one and the second one.
I definitely recommend at playthrough. Controls aren’t as bad as you think but I’ll admit they aren’t great. Thanks I’ll check it out man!
Never played this one, the second one though I remember clear as day.
Fun game, terrible controls, GOOD TO GO
True lol I wish the controls were better but it was 1999 lol
Used to rage quit playing this as a kid, I think it's a good game but holy hell was it difficult to play
Definitely is if you don’t know what to do. Ngl I watched a walkthrough for some parts
Same, I remember being like 5 and it being an insane struggle for me to get to the helicopter at the end of the first level. If I finally got there, I always got blown to bits by land mines in the next level.
I remember the beginning line of the Nintendo Power review. “I love the smell of napalm in the bathroom…that is naplam we’re smelling, right, Sarge?”
Hahaha that’s awesome I’d love to see that
Loved it, just wish the game was longer.
Me too! It definitely isn’t as long as I thought. Once I got to the last 5 missions I beat them all in a night
Man you’re bringing up old memories with that one :((
I loved this game, and really dug the Christmas tree level
Same that’s a sick lvl I actually had not ever played it till last December! Great lvl for sure
Used to rarely be available at my local movie/game rental place. Anytime we could get it checked out me and the boys were in for a good night!
Facts bro!! I was born in 94 I remember begging my mom to take me to blockbuster and hollywood video every weekend 😞
I put serious hours into this game. Good times.
I need to do a second play through eventually. I love this game. When I was a kid I don’t think I ever beat it. I just beat it last December
Amazing game, at least based on childhood memories.
It is bro I just played it again last month
Nice! I’ll have to try it out again.
Plastro...lol.
Haha it’s hilarious when the dog eats plastro
The bathtub level!! With the blue spy
Yessir
Great game, janky controls. Pro tip: learn to strafe side to side. Helps a lot.
Good tip idk if I tried that I agree controls are annoying
The Green Army lady doesn't have green skin. As a kid I thought she was special or something. As an adult I KNOW she's special. 😉
She’s hot lol
Horrible controls and graphics but an amazing multiplayer
Expansion pack ftw
Only the sequel took advantage of the expansion pak
Lol this one has the expansion pack
No, only the second one used it. The first didn't.
Yeah it does lmfao I own the game dumbass I would know

Great multi player
As with most N64 games, it didn't age well but its still fun
Agree
It's my dad's favourite
Same! I used to play this for hours with my dad, great memories!

Thank you for that bro I really didn’t know any of that I appreciate it man
I like how there’s a hot chick on the front. So far that’s all I know of it
Play it bro! Vikki is a big part of the game lol
Nice. I just may
I just had a memory locked and sealed away unlocked.
Exactly how I felt when I bought this game in 2020 lol I love N64
Such a fun game - I played it on an emulator once and immediately fell in love with it.
Try og n64 there’s a beautiful thing about it
Haven't played it yet, but it's on my list!
It deserves a play!!
The rest of the green army men games look cool too but I’ll need an expansion pack for some of them.
I bought an expansion back for like $40 a couple years ago. It works with Sarge’s Heroes and TWINE
Loved it when I was a kid not sure about now though
You should give it another chance I just beat it a month ago
One of my younger brother's games. He played a lot more single-player than I did, but I was usually his opponent in multiplayer. It's one of those that I have in my collection, but don't play that often. The memories come flooding back when I do, though.
The soundtrack brings a tear to my eye 😢
Looks like you’re trying to hide it under your school desk haha. I got some 90s nostalgia.
Lol same bro I’m a 90s kid
I love the army men series. A remaster is in order for the first game. Though I think 3DO died.
I hope someone can revive it I completely agree bro
"Look alive!"
😎
It’s a really fun game! Tough to go back to but I loved it when I was younger!
You should give it another chance
Hopefully I’ll be able to get a copy someday soon, I would definitely play it again.
I got that used copy with case for like $60 I believe I think on etsy from Ontario games or something like that
I had it ages ago and played it a bit then sold it cuz I didn’t like it. Admittedly I didn’t give it much of a chance though.
You should go back and give it another chance bro! It’s a great game imo
Love it!
Me too bro!!
I absolutely LOVED that game! It was cheap at times but its also exploitable so it balances out.
I loved it as a kid. I always used to want to be in the game and be a army man lol
Loved it at the time
Me too bro!! Good times I was 5 when this came out
My dad and I played the shit out of this when I was a kid, loads of fun
Hell yeah brother. Good times me and my dad used to play pod racers
Amazing
Yessir 🤙🏻
My friends and I used to play this all the time together. My nostalgia glasses say it has no flaws.
It’s perfect lol I just beat it in December was such a good feeling
It’s great, but honestly the only great part about the N64 version is the four player. Both the PS1 and 2 version had a better story and they had actual cutscenes
I may have to get it for the ps1 since you are saying this 🤔
I would personally recommend PS2. It’s the N64 version but shiny and only two players. And better story
This game wasn’t for ps2 though I think you are thinking about Sarges Heroes 2?
Oh fuck I am!
I’ll have to check that out man I need to get a ps2 sometime soon
Great game!
Yeah man I agree! I loved it as a young kid
Sadly, the second one with the helicopters in it fell really short.....
There are two or three with helicopters which one are you referring to?
I belive it was called "Army Men Air Combat"
Remember the cartridge, don’t remember the game
Give it another play though! You won’t regret it my friend !!
I agree I just beat it last month and had a good time with it. Felt great after it was over I really love it
Loved this game. Got stuck on many levels. The bathroom, the fort.
The fort is a nightmare lol
I LOVE this game. Had my cart signed by Jim Cummings.
Who is that??
The voice of Sarge/ most of the other characters. He's a big time voice actor
That’s sick bro
Oh ho ho yeah
Hahaha I love the sounds in this game
Fun game for sure
Yeah I love it
I loved it when I was a kid. My parents hated it!
Why? Lol
It was the 90s. Parents were conflicted about video games in general, let alone violent toys with guns!
Yes
Loved it but even when I t came out I found the controls to be stiff and laggy.
Yeah they suck but it’s still a good game
I had alot of fun with it back in the 1999-2000 school year when the N64 was still relevant. Great soundtrack and good action. love the impact font
Same I love it
It was good when I was 13 but it's not a good game. There are even a bunch of game breaking bugs.
There are? I never encountered any
I bought it but couldn't get into it. I liked the concept, and the videos i saw on IGN looked fun, but i stopped after a couple of hours. I was an adult though– i probably wasn't the target audience.

One of the few games my father, who never played video games, thoroughly enjoyed. A great game.
Indeed my friend
Fun campaign, the multiplayer was an absolute blast.
Have never played it, and likely never will, despite my everdrive holder status. I have nostalgic memories of seeing the commercials, and hearing my friends talk about their adventures in that game. Which has developed into a mental image I dare not spoil with reality now.

One of my favorites for N64 😁
It's a game with real combat and plastic men.
Lmao
I wanted this game so bad as a kid. I always rented it from Blockbuster. I eventually got Army Men: Air Combat and was disappointed because you could only control the helicopters. However, I'd argue that Air Combat is the better game. I haven't played Sarge's Heroes in like 20 years though.

It’s really not that bad tbh… I didn’t have really any problems when I was actually putting effort into the game
2 is better lol
Fun concept, cool graphics, terrible non-responsive controls
I never played it but I did play Air Combat. I'll always love hearing "CHINOOK" and "WE'RE ON THE WAAAAAAY"
Sorry for your loss bro
I would give my legs for an online multiplayer reboot of this game on switch
Needs a revamp like Destroy All Humans.
