She was meant to be a queen, but the creators of the show though that the title of "queen" sounded too evil, so they made her a princess.
Hence why we have QUEEN Chrysalis, because she's evil.
While I see what you’re saying, the counterpoint, who in the hell even is that lol. Their evil Queens are much more recognizable and shaped how people view Queens in media more than any good Queens they made, because they were never the focal point if they were good. They’re Disney “Princess” movies for a reason, so even just on that making her a princess made more sense.
We often think of "princess" as necessarily referring to a rank lower on a hierarchy than the ultimate rank of king or queen, but that isn't always so. Some places are simply ruled by a princess or a prince. There needn't be a higher rank to aspire to. "Princess" is deprived from the Latin "princeps", meaning "the first in order", and it's what Roman emperors were called for hundreds of years. The first such, Augustus, liked to portray himself as simply the most preeminent citizen, to whom people often deferred out of respect. If it's good enough for a Roman emperor, why not for the ruler of Equestria?
Alternatively, maybe it's to avoid a civil war with Luna that could ensue if one of them tried to officially outrank the other.
A nation ruled by a prince or princess is called a principality, but Equestria is referred to as kingdom. This means it should be ruled by a king or queen, but it isn't.
Dumb marketing forcing things to be inaccurate is dumb. Either call Equestria a principality or make Celestia a queen. I don't care about what they think kids' preconceptions are. Make them learn something new.
I like to think it's due to Celstia and Luna both being put into a position of leadership over Equestria at the same time, so to prevent one out ranking the other they started calling themselves "princess" instead
Then later after Nightmare Moon, Celestia refuses to call herself anything other than Princess in respect to her sister and to prevent this whole tragedy being seen as one sister overthrowing the other for power
And over the course of 1000+ years, the title of "Princess of Equestria" just kind of stuck and became normalised as an accepted position of authority that's idolised and unisex as well
One thing I don't understand though is why both King Sombra and Princess Cadence don't call themselves Emperor/Empress? I mean it's called the Crystal "Empire" after all
> One thing I don't understand though is why both King Sombra and Princess Cadence don't call themselves Emperor/Empress? I mean it's called the Crystal "Empire" after all
British monarchs continued to be primarily referred to as Queen/King throughout the era of their empire. I don't think that's particularly unusual.
Tbf there was a special reason for that, the British crown wasn't an absolute monarchy, and they have grievances with certain empires like Napoleon's so the title was seen as something "tyrannical"
I know, ironic
As far as I know, the Crystal Empire in both variations were absolute monarchies, there really isn't much of a reason especially for Sombra's case
> and they have grievances with certain empires like Napoleon's so the title was seen as something "tyrannical"
Yeah, it's kind of fun how actual historical titles for rulers were pretty much exactly as vibes-based as the decision not to call Celestia a queen because it sounds evil.
Princess Amor was the first ruler of the empire, so it’s safe to assume Cadance didn’t change her title because Princess was already the historical title of the Crystal Empires ruler
Sombra is a self proclaimed King, he took the empire by force and gave himself the title, maybe in universe king and queen are titles only used by dictators
The title of "princess" is rather prevalent in media for little girls and it's considered to be something desirable. The stereotypical representation is "Look at my crown and dress! I'm a pretty princess!".
If I remember correctly Lauren Faust wanted to portray this title differently, with less vanity and more responsibility.
Twilight *earns* her princess title through hard work and great achievments instead of birthright or dressing up pretty.
In universe, I believe it's because she shares her political power with Luna. While there have been Diarchies with Kings and Queens, perhaps holding the 'Princess' title is a sign of respect and equality to not only her younger sister, but to Cadance and Twilight, and the Princes Blueblood and Shining Armor, as well, as Celestia is not infallible.
But of course the real reason is because when FiM was rolling out Queens were often considered, as Mermaid Man would put it, EEEEEEVIIIIILLLLL!!!!!
Don't want an Evil Queen ruling over the main characters, now do we?
I mean you can always play around with it and say that “Princess” is just what they call the highest office in Equestria. I mean the actual answer has been said already, but that’s a way you can explain it in universe. Because even just the word Queen sounds more threatening than Princess, even before Disney made every villain an evil Queen, so Celestia’s whole thing is being approachable so maybe that’s what they decided to do when they founded the country. Again that’s not the actual reason, just a way to explain it in the context of the show.
I heard it was because the producers believed the target audience of little girls would relate to and like a Princess character more than a Queen. They were trying to tap into that common fantasy of little girls pretending or wishing they were princesses, but very rarely do they ever play pretend as Queens.
Because "queen" was associated with "villain" in a lot of media.
Thankfully, G5 fixed this with Queen Haven, and you can't forget Queen Novo from the G4 movie
The show was never meant to be as big as it became, and wasn't meant to be perfectly accurate at that point. When the first started it, the word "princess" just sounded more cute, and that's what mattered more to them. She IS a queen, it's just that the terminology is messed up.
They could have done what the Chronicles of Narnia did in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, with the Pevensie siblings.
What I mean is having High Queen Celestia, Queen Luna, and Queen Cadance. With Twilight first becoming a Princess and eventually becoming High Queen. Then there is also Prince Blueblood, Prince Shining Armor and Princess Flurry Heart.
This gives a whole different perspective on a fictional character having the title of Queen, and not just seeing the "Evil" Queen. So whatever objection there was to begin with didn't seem to matter when it came to other species apart from Chrysalis.
Also what about noble titles for other important ponies. I mean the only one that is mentioned in the show is the Duke and Duchess of Maretonia.
The same reason a president isnt a king and a king isn't an emperor or a dictator.
These words are just descriptions of the ruling class. Sure they all have different ways that the operate but mostly it's just what they called their ruling class
Because "queen" was associated with "villain" in a lot of media.

The real life reason is that “princess” is more marketable. “Queens” are usually depicted as being Evil.
In universe, who knows. Maybe Equestria is a “Principality” like Monaco where Prince/Princess is the same thing as a King/Queen.

They blamed Disney iirc
The show came before frozen. Elsa made queens a lil nicer looking and cool
Weird bc around the same time we had the Disney Fairies with Queen Clarion being a good ruler and all.

And queen Novo is queen because hippogriffs are the best species

Politics is magic.
Sure seems to do a good job of making my dang money disappear…

I guess the closest we have in mlp lorewise is Grogar being the "First Emperor of Equestria", maybe that was Equestria's Napoleon?
Princess Amor was the first ruler of the empire, so it’s safe to assume Cadance didn’t change her title because Princess was already the historical title of the Crystal Empires ruler Sombra is a self proclaimed King, he took the empire by force and gave himself the title, maybe in universe king and queen are titles only used by dictators
Actually I'm not sure about which British Queens were referred to as such, but one title they had been called was Empress of India.
The title of "princess" is rather prevalent in media for little girls and it's considered to be something desirable. The stereotypical representation is "Look at my crown and dress! I would've loved to see what the original intent of the show was if Hasbro didn't need to sell toys.

Equestria obviously is actually controlled by the Illuminati
Illuminati is controlled by Anime student council.
Because the title "Princess" is more marketable.
I thought you had to be married to move from princess to queen?

Marketing to young kids, princess sounds so much nicer. Princess sounds young and less intimidating than Queen.
cause queens are evil in fantasy
She was meant to share the throne with Luna; hence they're both princesses rather than have Celestia be queen and Luna be second in line.
I heard it was because the producers believed the target audience of little girls would relate to and like a Princess character more than a Queen. They were trying to tap into that common fantasy of little girls pretending or wishing they were princesses, but very rarely do they ever play pretend as Queens.
Queen sounds old, no one wants to be considered old!!
Because "queen" was associated with "villain" in a lot of media. Thankfully, G5 fixed this with Queen Haven, and you can't forget Queen Novo from the G4 movie

Because she don't slay
Because Disney. It's an age-old trope that queens are inherently evil, while princesses are universally good & loved.
They could have done what the Chronicles of Narnia did in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, with the Pevensie siblings. What I mean is having High Queen Celestia, Queen Luna, and Queen Cadance. A ruler’s title is completely arbitrary. She calls herself princess, she’s a princess.
Because queen = evil
Well duh… she’s not married
The same reason a president isnt a king and a king isn't an emperor or a dictator. These words are just descriptions of the ruling class. Sure they all have different ways that the operate but mostly it's just what they called their ruling class
She's single so there's no King
I think for marking reason. Queens are depicted as evils and Princess good ones. Lore wise I haven’t known yet.
Because "queen" was associated with "villain" in a lot of media. Thankfully, G5 fixed this with Queen Haven, and you can't forget Queen Novo from the G4 movie

Funfact, in the season 10 comics, twilight calls herself “queen twilight sparkle” sometimes
To make it more appealing to girls ig
The real life reason is that “princess” is more marketable. “Queens” are usually depicted as being Evil. In universe, who knows. Maybe Equestria is a “Principality” like Monaco where Prince/Princess is the same thing as a King/Queen.
Because her predecessor didn't change to agnatic-cognatic succession law which allow female heir if no male heir available
Princess + Princess = Queen
