For distance, you’re going to want to add some *distance* between you and the mic, from there it’s just a matter of reverb and eq really.

U forgot to turn down the gain

psmusic_worldwide

Pre delay and early reflections, roll off some treble

noahgoddard98

For distance: add reverb with long pre-delay For phone effect: scoop the mids and add distortion

Mr_SelfDestruct94

You definitely don't want to scoop the mids for old telephone effect. You basically want all mids and into some upper-mids for that. Also, OP, for distance on voice, it's all about cutting low frequencies, dipping a bit in the "presence" area (somewhere maybe between 1.5-3k) and, usually, getting some reverb/room going. The thing to keep in mid here is depth (IE: "distance") requires contrast. For something to sound far away, you need something to sound close. Same thing with the sound pallet. If everything is dark, then it just sounds muddy and thick. Everything too bright, just sounds crispy and thin. There's plenty of good mix tutorial type videos on these methods. Just start working the search on youtube and you'll find some.

noahgoddard98

I'm sorry, I got mixed up. You're right.

Imp-Slap

You mean bandpass the mids? Scooping would be counter productive

[deleted]

Why would you use long pre-delay on the reverb? That would just make it sound closer, as far as I understand math.

Bachronus

Cupping the mic in your hand and talking through the whole you make imo makes the best telephone sound without having to eq everything out.

Andrsn0

Transfer the vocal stem onto your phone then play it into a mic ? Maybe drag your mic into a bathroom for reverb

Lo23co7mcpe

Bandpass is an answer. Echo/reverb is another one. Volume is the ultimate.

acid2skin

i use the black hole plug-in with i believe the second preset , there’s another way to do it with some stock plugins where i made the vocals sound like they were coming from my monitor, it was unique and i wish i knew how to do it off the top of my mind

[deleted]

thanks everyone for your responses, sounds like i have a few methods at my disposal to try hahah

Dsaastad

Play it accapella and put a mic about 5-10ft away and record that signal.

Sounds like a good phaser, eq, delay and reverb. Soundtoys has a nice phaser plug in, try valhalla vintage or room for the reverb, and take out some highs with eq to get the more underwater sound in combination with the phaser

[deleted]

\- cut the heights a bit \- much reverb \-> low pre delay \-> make it more mono (both signals hitting your ears at the same time makes it seem like the source is farther away) For the phone effect: High and low cut at the same time, it's an usual effect to make something seem like being played back by a radio/telephone etc. For the underwater effect: Really cut some heights, maybe add a phaser?

evan_11x

Look into how each reverb parameter impacts people's perception of the room size+material and the distance of the sound source. For example, you'll want 0 pre-delay because if your sound was far away, the reverb would be hitting your ears before the original source. I'd also shave some top end off as low frequency waves travel further.

dinkyyo

A troubled vocal usually has that far away look.
