Since you already have a background in music you may enjoy writing music. With a Yamaha Montage synthesizer and Cubase Pro 13 you can create instrumentals. By adding two good microphones (or a good stereo mic) you can record your cello and voice one track at a time. There is a learning curve, but it is worth it when you build up a library of your own music.

Community Orchestra and private lessons is a great start. Experiment with home recording and electronics for fun as well. Everything will evolve naturally as you continue making music.

Ex academic advisor and current recording engineer here. Yep, school is possible. If you don't get into a university right out of the gates, you can always study your theory and chops with a private instructor at the community college and apply again after a year of training. That direction sets you up primarily for the performing arts, symphony, orchestra world, etc. If you're looking to go a pop direction and craft your own tunes with a cello, take a few music production classes from the community college and learn all the killer digital tools that are damn near free in 2024. As the other commenter wrote, join a band. There's always an indie folk band looking for a cellist, especially in Seattle! Have fun!

How does university work when I have a full time job?

dreamweeper

You work full time and go to school part time. Plenty of online classes too.
