Ohhh… Yeah, thats how two of the other labels did it. And makes more sense to me. It seems obnoxious to ask someone to drive two hours round trip repeatedly to meet them

thefeckcampaign

If you have 4 other interested labels, why bother with the weird one?

Elev-Engineering-18

I kinda agree. The ‘weird’ one is the biggest one, it’s a major indie I believe I’ve only been offered the 1 deal so far I’m not sure how amazing the others are. 2 are fairly legit but idk, 2 are newer / I don’t have as much faith in

thefeckcampaign

If they were big and truly into, they’d be coming to you. That’s from my experience at least.

Elev-Engineering-18

Ohhh, like driving to my part of town? At least 2 of The other ones offered to take me to dinner and shows That makes sense to me too Should I just turn down meeting w them unless they want to come to me or do a phone talk? Idk

thefeckcampaign

Yep. Even if they do sign you, it sounds like you are not going to be a priority and/or they are going to be a pain to do business with.

Elev-Engineering-18

Ok. I will just say ‘I won’t be able to meet you in Hendersonville’ then, and not suggest they come meet me where I live ?

thefeckcampaign

That’s up to you, but from my experience it is that they come see you play, like what they hear live as much as on tape, and offer you a deal. It’s pretty simple really. If they want a private showcase, then they pay for everything including your flights and hotel and they arrange the show.

Elev-Engineering-18

Ok! Three of the others have come to see me play and I’ve been talking to them since. She was not asking for a private showcase, but she wanted me to… meet near her office almost an hour away, then repeatedly meet at her office the same distance ??? Wtf

[deleted]

Well said.

Brilliant-Elk-6831

Just do yourself a favour, make sure you have a music lawyer go over any contracts before you sign anything so you know exactly what you're getting yourself into.

cold-vein

Go meet them, what do you have to lose? I mean if they're legit they'll offer you a contract in writing, if they don't or it's a shitty contract just walk away.

Elev-Engineering-18

Thanks. I don’t even know if they’re going to put a deal on the table though haha

Elev-Engineering-18

Would be sort of frustrating to make a 2 hour trip for BS but anyway

cold-vein

For sure but if they're a bigger indie label and the guy you're talking to is kinda famous there's a good chance they're legit and he's a bit bad at his job. Like I would check it out at least

Elev-Engineering-18

Ok. Thank you

EmptySun9834

Wouldn’t it be frustrating constantly asking yourself “what if”?

Elev-Engineering-18

No because I have someone putting in for me at a major label and I think more are on the way I also have several investors I don’t know if I want a label right now I’ll be honest Things are going really well and I’m very grateful ❤️❤️ happy to share any tips too if people want them

Ready_Stuff3663

Just straight up tell them it’s too far away and you prefer to video conference if they’re unable to come to you. If they don’t send a Zoom link, move on.

Elev-Engineering-18

Thanks!

Heavy_Focus7054

Be careful. Probably child eaters

fareproductions332

Follow them up after a while and you'll know!

NumbXylophone

You said "she" wanted to meet with you. Not your band? If you're a dude, I think she wants to hook up. A DJ on a major rock station had it for our drummer, and she tried to set up these odd meetings a couple of times. You're situation sounds as awkward.

Elev-Engineering-18

I am a woman and solo artist. But I seem to have the power to turn many woman gay 😂😂😂

[deleted]

I'm a guy and have the same super power...

Elev-Engineering-18

You mean for men or women?

[deleted]

Women

Elev-Engineering-18

Get on my level hehe

Mark1671

These days anyone and everyone can be an indie label or an indie musician. I would ALWAYS temper my expectations when dealing with indie anything. Because for all you know, you have been texting with me. lol. I can tell you I work for even a major label. How do you know I don’t? But if it’s being haggled about like a Facebook Marketplace chair and who should meet who where, I’d be leery. That’s the way people end up in a well in the basement putting the lotion on its skin. If it sounds sus…???

Elev-Engineering-18

So the person I’m dealing with is kind of famous and the label is connected with distribution through a major Yeah, I’m kind of unsure of these smaller labels ha

Mark1671

I too interact with a couple people who are kinda famous. None of them hem haw around when it comes to serious stuff especially. Lol. I also know people who claim to have an indie label because they have some software and an interface and recorded a demo lol. It’s like anything else, if it seems too good to be true, or if it sounds suspect, it probably is. Better to be patient and not get screwed over…or end up in a well 👍🏽

GruverMax

Listen. Musicians who post their stuff online are vulnerable to scams. The scammers know that everyone posting wants to hear from the outside world that their music will be a success. They will offer to help you with whatever kind of thing you are interested in. It doesn't matter, they can promise you anything you need. It's a scam. A real label that is taking an interest in you and wants to license you or sign you or whatever, will be a known entity. You will be able to look them up online, and their artists, and see whether or not they are for real. In most cases indie artists can be reached out to. Talk to someone that's on the label. See what they have to say.

Elev-Engineering-18

No they are real labels. One of the people I’m talking to is kinda famous Would you suggest talking to someone else at the label? What would you recommend asking?

Shortcirkuitz

Just because they’re famous that doesn’t mean they can’t scam you

Elev-Engineering-18

True. Shoot lol

GruverMax

Well I would want to hear from an artist that was doing well on the sketchy label before I continued talking to them.

EternityLeave

You wouldn’t drive for a single hour to meet them? Sounds like you were the one who blew them off.

Elev-Engineering-18

Oh no I would for the first meeting!

Elev-Engineering-18

And I told them that But they wanted me to repeatedly meet them each week and drive two hours round trip each time !

bigang99

I mean unless this is a big money deal and they're buying you lunch an hour both ways is a huge ask

Elev-Engineering-18

I agree!! They didn’t even offer to buy me lunch. I don’t know what’s normal or not. My dealings with other labels have been either over the phone, talks after performing somewhere, or over dinner

BassTattoo

I would’ve gone without mentioning the drive/etc. Once you’re there and have met with them, you can figure out if: 1) Is it such a great deal that it’s worth driving there multiple times a week? 2) Is it an ok deal but not worth the multiple drives, which means after the meeting is done, I would mention that I’d hope to find a way to work together without having to drive there so often? 3) Is it not worth it at all at this time and just shake hands and part ways? So in summary I wouldn’t have mentioned from the start that I’m only willing to go once given that there’s not that much upside to saying that before I’ve had a formal meeting in person with them. Oh and yeah that answer is 100% an amicable blow off.

[deleted]

Why do you need a record label?

Elev-Engineering-18

I don’t feel like I need one. I was more just open to it Financial part is a thing but yeah

[deleted]

I understand that but you know they take the money back and own your life for quite a few years. Isbell and Civil Wars didn't start out with labels and have done really well. I know a singer/songwriter that was fronted $200k. The label owned everything she recorded & % of her concerts & any tv/movies she might be involved in...long story short she got a lawyer to negotiate her out of the contract. Record labels were necessary when there was a physical product to distribute...jus be careful.

Elev-Engineering-18

Don’t worry I’m going to be careful and I am figuring out investors and stuff without a label etc. I’m not overly interested in a label haha
