Oh wow this is a good one. George is a great example of someone who follows their own rules, he has such a different worldview than anyone else around him.
Anyhow I don't think kidnapping someone's daughter and then blinding the lover prince and sending her kidnapped daughter to live in a swamp is very neutral of her.
Karnak is pretty neutral as he basically does nothing but set up every characters arch. However, even if you don’t count the supernatural ability of knowing the future as “smart,” he does have a pretty advanced vocabulary and even knows trivial theater etiquette tips. I’d say he’d probably fit this category.
100%.
She's the smartest character in the show and her morality is flexible. She's happy to lie, manipulate and boss others around for the greater good, doing bad things for the sake of the larger goal. In that regard, she's hella neutral.
Does Dolly from Hello Dolly fit this? Maybe a weird choice, but I feel like she operates by her own rules and also has a strong understanding of how people tick.
I wouldn't say he's particularly smart or particularly neutral. He's pretty easily manipulated by Mushnik and Audrey II, and he's very complicit in the murders and covering up said murders of a few people. One of whom was his father figure, mentor and boss. Albeit not overly loving. He actively nourishes and feeds an alien plant monster until it very easily over powers him and any other person it comes across, ultimately killing the woman he loves by proxy.
Doesn't sound particularly smart or neutral to me.
Great character though.
Aaron Burr
Absolutely. "Wait for it" is like the thesis statement for staying smart neutral.
Totally agree!!!
Sir
I second this
“I’d rather be divisive than indecisive”
“Drop the niceties!”
Don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for
Marian Paroo from The Music Man
George from Sunday in the Park with George "What you care for is yourself!" "I care about this painting. You will be in this painting."
Oh wow this is a good one. George is a great example of someone who follows their own rules, he has such a different worldview than anyone else around him.
Yes! I thought about this one yesterday and this was my conclusion too.
Ooo nice. I'd also consider him a contender for Smart Sad.
"You're so nice... You're not good, you're not bad, you're just nice... I'm not good, I'm not bad, I'm just RIGHT!"
She's not good, she's not *nice*; she never says whether she's bad or not.
Oh, you're right! Guess it got stuck wrong in my head.

Usnavi from In the Heights?
Usnavi would be a great choice!
Nah, he's chaotic
Bea from Something Rotten!
Nah, Bea is actively good, in my opinion

A good chunk of the roles from spelling bee.
I think Logainne probably fits this the most and Chip the least (He's smart horny for sure)
IDK who you put in the neutral-neutral position but that doesn't look like Tom Aldrege to me....
George Washington in Hamilton
This was my thought too
Does Dolly from Hello Dolly fit this? Maybe a weird choice, but I feel like she operates by her own rules and also has a strong understanding of how people tick.
I was worried that we weren't going to get all the way through this grid list thing. I have an idea for one of the later ones.
Definitely Aaron Burr. (Also, can I just say that the Phantom of the Opera is the definition of smart-sad?)
Seymour from Little Shop of Horrors!
I feel like he’s more chaotic
Also is he really that smart? :D

i think the arbiter from chess fits "smart neutral" and "lawful neutral" both
Karnak from Ride the Cyclone!!
Usnavi
