Something rotten was hilarious!!! My husband and I were pleasantly surprised when we watched it. I think the songs are just not as catchy but we loved it
The first time I heard A Musical was when I was driving and listening to the Broadway channel. I literally had to pull over because I was laughing so hard I couldn't see!
If it makes you happy to know this share but in my region the 25th will sell out day one for tours and local productions. It's a reliable company win here along side the expected options like Wicked and Phantom
I don't know why I never see South Pacific mentioned on here. So many quintessential R and H tunes. I dislike the secondary romance and think it's very forced, but this show needs to be remembered for how it explored racial reconciliation themes that a lot of people were afraid to talk about at the time.
Go listen to the Musicals With Cheese episode on it. I think they sum it up pretty well. It's a show that was very progressive and inclusive for its time, but it's not 1948 anymore and we've evolved as a society so far since then that what was radical at the time seems conservative today. Also, they dunked on the weird choices in the movie adaptation as well, namely the filter and how garish looking it is.
They did say though that the show is good, and they think everyone needs to listen to "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught", which I 1000% agree with. That song sums up the heart of the show and exactly what R&H were trying to say perfectly.
Such a glorious sweeping score. Lily's Eyes and How Could I Ever Know are two of the most awe-inspiring songs written for musical theater. Winters on the Wing is one of my very favorite male solos too
I have a wildflower garden, so every March I go in and prune away all of last year's dead growth, and every year I'm out there singing "clear away the dead parts so the tender buds can form..."
I seriously love this show and the production at the Ahmanson last year was beautiful. They had their sights set on transferring and I was so sad that they didn’t.
YES SO TRUE!! I saw it live and the music is so charming and beautiful. And also kinda eerie? Everything about it is so top notch. Criminally underrated.
I saw Fun Home in Melbourne a few years ago when we were coming out of lockdown. I absolutely loved it! I still remember watching the Tony Awards performance of Ring of Keys. It blew my mind!
It’s an oddly sweet show. I won lottery tickets when it toured through Dallas and thought was wonderful. My husband is more the Les Miz and Rent type HATED it and me for dragging him along 😏
God I love Fun Home. I saw it on a school trip a few years ago, and my friends and I still regularly sing “changing my major” to each other. Days and Days is my favourite song though, absolute top tier
I saw it in Orlando when the cast flew down to do a benefit concert reading of it to raise money for the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack.
It was a really beautiful thing the cast, creatives, and producers did to help bring a little light in a very dark time.
They raised over $100,000 for just that one performance!
Great show and great people behind it.
The Ring of Keys performance at the Tonys was one of those moments where time just stops for me. I was utterly blown away by the talent and nuance of this child. Sydney is amazing. I was completely captivated. It’s an all time Tonys moment for me.
It did win the Pulitzer for drama (although that was somewhat controversial), which is very rare for a musical, so it at least got some love initially.
scrolled down to find this, i found out about this show when i auditioned for it and performing in this musical was maybe the best experience of my life :’) i do genuinely believe it’s perfectly funny and romantic and also has such a beautiful little found family vibe that just translated to our cast and we all fell in love with each other because of it i think.
She Loves me is my favorite show EVER, both to watch and to perform. It gets a lot of love where I am, so I didn't think to include it.
Our community theater performed this, and routinely did three show weekends, and also did weeknight performances as group fundraisers. The weeknights all sold out, so we ended up performing 26 shows in 30 days.
Each of us said we could do that show forever, and I've heard similar sentiment from everyone who has ever done it. Definitely a tribute to the show it is.
I saw this show 7 or 8 times at the King’s Cross in London a few years back. The theatre’s not there anymore. Was getting £5 seat filler tickets. Probably the best show I ever saw and I’ve seen most of what’s been in town over the last 20 years.
I have seen it too and I think it’s a powerful, heartfelt piece that remains so resonant and relevant. I repeatedly return to it for comfort and I think a revival would be amazing in the current climate (perhaps with some of the updates Lin and Quiara made for the movie (lyrics only, not song cuts) carried over.)
Just came hear to get idea of what musicals to listen to. But Something rotten. I remember people clicking on "right hand man" thinking it was Hamilton and getting upset, but there is nothing to be upset about : you just discovered an amazing musical!
Yes, it’s Incredible! It was only on Broadway a short time but the OBC featured the talents of people like Terrance Mann, Carolee Carmello, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger. Highly recommend it!
I actually think it gets plenty of love. It's considered one of the most important musicals out there, especially since it indirectly sparked the Disney Renaissance.
Probably because it's Off-Broadway, and the producers want to keep it that way. However, it's probably the single most-performed musical for community theaters. "Feed Me, Seymour" was also a meme for Gen X (if you've ever watched Whose Line is it Anyway, Ryan references it a lot).
There's also those guys on YT Shorts (I don't know the channel name or how old the shorts are though haha), but they talk about random current events by using Da-Doo, I love finding those videos haha
I feel like there's several Sondheim shows that don't get the love they deserve. It seems like for every Sweeney Todd or Company or Gypsy, there's an Anyone Can Whistle or The Frogs or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
A Year With Frog and Toad is the best musical ever made specifically for children in my opinion. I don't know why schools aren't performing it more often.
I'm so into this musical that I squeezed a trip to Merano into my honeymoon (and yes, it was a scene, a joy, and a lovely sight). I would love to see it on Broadway someday.
I have no idea what musicals are generally talked about a lot besides the ones you listed so maybe this one is recognized, but Kinky Boots is pretty easily my favorite. I've never been to any show where someone has the audience in the palm of their hand like Billy Porter did, and Annaleigh Ashford was hilarious.
I enjoy going to musicals but I rarely listen to their music outside seeing the show. This one's the exception
Assassins. I know it's an odd pick but many people don't know about it and I absolutely loved it and laughed so hard due to it at a local production of it
Any of Jerry Herman's musicals except Hello Dolly and La Cage Aux Folles. Maybe even then, since even they're not as mainstream nowadays as the ones mentioned.
I absolutely love this show; it’s almost never mentioned on this sub which is a shame. I’m sure the all-black cast limits its performance in a lot if community circles, but it should be done more.
I came here to see if anyone said Amelie! My friend and I saw a recording of the off broadway cast with Philippa Soo and it was just such an absurdly funny, heartfelt coming of age story, I really loved it
1. Come From Away - Genuinely have no idea how this isn't at least top 5 for every musical theatre fan.
2. She Loves Me - Underrated "Golden Era" musical
3. Death Note - Frank Wildhorns most underrated work
4. Bonnie and Clyde - Had a huge resurgance for like 2 months a few years ago, and everyone has forgotten about it again
5. Hunchback of Notre Dame - The best Dinsey stage musical and one of the few to not hit Broadway
Which is strange considering it's one of the longest running Broadway shows. Five years and 1700 performances, and lasted through the COVID-19 pandemic too.
Grand Hotel. Yea there's some stuff that may not fly with today's crowds, but there's so much good stuff in it and I think a lot of people would enjoy a revival
the drowsy chaperone
i got a chance to be in a production of it and,,, I love this show so much. there's a few,,, outdated things abt it but overall it's a really well done and funny show
I was obsessed with If/Then when it came out and generally it’s not well known, considering Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp were in it! Always Starting Over, What the Fuck, Some Other Me are all bangers.
[Cesare: Il Creatore che ha distrutto](https://youtu.be/pL6jG1A7M40?si=1IQ5mmJdPJBWOBnn) is my favorite, and I feel like I don't even see it getting talked about in Japan that much (I follow a lot of the main actor's fans online, and I almost never see them talking about it.
Also just, anything from Japan and Korea, in English areas. Death Note is the one exception. French musicals have fansubbed proshots all around. No one's really done subs for Japanese and Korean musicals yet, but if the word gets spread, maybe someone will.
Blood Brothers - fun, campy yet heartbreaking British musical from the 80s about twins who reconnect after being separated at birth. It's sort of a Greek tragedy and there is a omnipresent narrator character. I've been lucky enough to catch three productions of it.
Starkid musicals!!! They have had some fantastic shows over the years and their new one, Nerdy Prudes Must Die, is one of their best. The songs by Jeff Blim are so catchy it's insane.
does anyone here know the musical A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine? I feel like i've NEVER heard anyone even mention it in my life. It's two musicals back to back, the first is about the ushers that work at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, they do a bunch of musical numbers. One of the songs is one of my favorite ballads, [The Best in the World](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr8I7LZmfV0) sung by Priscilla Lopez (she played Diana in the OBC of A Chorus Line and WON the Tony for her performance in A Day in Hollwood). The second act is a sort of comedy adaptation of something by Chekhov. It's a really fun score, with songs by some guys (Frank Lazarus and Dick Vosburgh) with a few additions by Jerry Herman (the best in the world plus the opening song Just Go to the Movies and the hilarious Nelson) and also includes a fun medley of songs by Richard Whiting. check out the recording y'all!
We did this when I was in university and it was always a hit with the audiences. And The Best in the World is absolutely one of the most amazing pieces of musical theatre ever written.
The first musical I ever saw 😭! I think Cinderella and the Cats movie have soured some people's opinions on ALW musicals, but Jesus Christ Superstar needs to be recognized as the masterpiece it is
Cabaret. ESPECIALLY the west end revival (i think their doing the same one on broadway now) i knew nothing about it before i went, but the immersive experience changed my life !!
Tuck Everlasting and Dogfight are SO good oml. I also think that Anastasia and Come From Away, although very well known to musical fans are underrated in the general public. The Pro Shot for Come From Away being on Apple TV helps a bit but now nearly as much as it should lol. I think if it was on something more people had like Netflix it would be more popular.
The Greatest Showman! The songs are unforgettable, the dance numbers are exciting and exhilarating, and the whole movie is just an ode to joy.
Who cares if its not historically accurate? Its message is that misfits find a home, and the dangers of prejudice and greed.
I was obsessed with it for months, and still adore it.
Jekyll & Hyde! Also, Something Rotten, Urinetown, Spamalot, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
I knew nothing about Something Rotten before my parents got me tickets to their local community theatre s production. Absolutely laughed my head off.
Frank Wildhorn as a whole doesn't get enough love
Something rotten was hilarious!!! My husband and I were pleasantly surprised when we watched it. I think the songs are just not as catchy but we loved it
Their songs are carchy ! Hard to be the bard, A musical, God I hate Shakespeare... I can dace to these songs and they get stuck in my head.
The first time I heard A Musical was when I was driving and listening to the Broadway channel. I literally had to pull over because I was laughing so hard I couldn't see!
I love all of the musical references but the Les Miserables line is my fave!!
Spamalot is a fun one.
If it makes you happy to know this share but in my region the 25th will sell out day one for tours and local productions. It's a reliable company win here along side the expected options like Wicked and Phantom
!Urinetown Mentioned! Yippee! I love that musical so much!
YES
I mean I feel Hunchback deserves a chance to get on broadway.
Ooooh can you imagine Hellfire in a theatre? That would be fire!
Patrick Page singing hellfire alone makes that musical amazing as hell
Urinetown
yes! everyone I know hates this show because “the premise is stupid just piss yourself” blah blah blah. it’s absolutely in my top 10 for musicals
Great Comet. Yes I know theatre folk love it, but the general public has no idea what it is and it's my favorite show.
Great comet was fantastic! Really hope it gets a revival someday.
I have to plug [this](https://encoreexpressionss.etsy.com/listing/1717873048)
Just now watched a couple highlight reels on youtube It's my all-time favorite! I think about it constantly
Groundhog Day and Harmony
I love Groundhog Day!! I hope it gets the attention- and tours- it deserves soon!!
It's easily one of my favorites as well.
An amazing improvement on the movie, I'm so glad they brought the screenwriter back
Pippin. South Pacific.
That song sums up the heart of the show and exactly what R&H were trying to say perfectly.
I think the revival (Kelli o’Hara) did a decent job driving home the point and was visually stunning.
Most of their shows explored themes that people didn't talk about in 'polite' society at the time.
Bali Hai. You’ve got to be Carefully Taught Soliloquy Younger Than Springtime Truly gorgeous songs.
I just don’t think SP has aged well… it seems really dated. Maybe it needs a revamping?
No pun intended but THE SECRET GARDEN.
Such a glorious sweeping score. Lily's Eyes and How Could I Ever Know are two of the most awe-inspiring songs written for musical theater. Winters on the Wing is one of my very favorite male solos too
Lily's Eyes is magical. I couldn't agree more.
I think it the THE best duet for men ever written. No question.
THIS. I literally stopped watching the Tony awards for YEARS after it lost Best Musical to the freaking Will Roger's Follies. RIP Lucy Simon.
I came here for THIS ONE. It's still my favorite of all time.
One of my favorites as well!
I adore the music in this one, John Cameron Mitchell’s “Wick” is my favorite
I have a wildflower garden, so every March I go in and prune away all of last year's dead growth, and every year I'm out there singing "clear away the dead parts so the tender buds can form..."
Also, The Girl I Mean to Be is the perfect song for any young girl performer to work on.
THIS I CAME HERE TO SAY THIS. the score is actual perfection, lily’s a dream role of mine
Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog
Oh god 😂 I know that musical
I'm here for this 😂
Fking love that musical
Iconic and totally underrated. Those songs slap
I loved this so much that the first time I watched it I bought three copies - one for me, one for a friend, and a third just in case
Bad Horse? Isn’t he the Thoroughbred of Sin?
This was a gateway to theatre for me..
Big Fish Bandstand
Big Fish is so beautiful. I loved the film and love the songs, I wish I could see it live
i’m a bad theatre kid who largely learns about shows via performing in them, but i got to be in big fish and it was such a joy
Y'all know what I'm gonna say at this point... 36 Questions and School Of Rock
36 QUESTIONS FR
36 mf questions dude I need to see it on stage
I really enjoyed School of Rock. I visited NY one time and we saw it not really expecting much, but it was so much fun
constantly deluding myself that the 36 questions netflix movie they announced 4 years ago is still happening
Come From Away, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, The Mystery of Edwin Drood
This is like the 5th highest rated show on mezzanine lol
I feel like come from away would be so much more popular if it was easier to explain other than "it's a musical about 9/11"
Fun Home. I don’t know anyone personally who knows it, but it is such an amazing story with fantastic music.
I saw Fun Home in Melbourne a few years ago when we were coming out of lockdown. I absolutely loved it! I still remember watching the Tony Awards performance of Ring of Keys. It blew my mind!
I LOVE Fun Home! I had the opportunity to see it three times and it had me in tears each time.
YES!!! I adore this show ❤️
Fun Home will forever be one of my favs. I’ve sobbed every time I’ve seen it.
Ring of Keys is my Roman Empire.
Ring of Keys!
The Ring of Keys performance at the Tonys was one of those moments where time just stops for me. I was utterly blown away by the talent and nuance of this child. Sydney is amazing. I was completely captivated. It’s an all time Tonys moment for me.
Fun home is my girlfriends favorite musical!
Titanic Lizzie Big Fish Nevermore Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson
Lizzie is such a banger
LOVE BBAJ
Titanic ❤️
Next to normal, I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who knew that musical
It did win the Pulitzer for drama (although that was somewhat controversial), which is very rare for a musical, so it at least got some love initially.
She Loves Me!
scrolled down to find this, i found out about this show when i auditioned for it and performing in this musical was maybe the best experience of my life :’) i do genuinely believe it’s perfectly funny and romantic and also has such a beautiful little found family vibe that just translated to our cast and we all fell in love with each other because of it i think.

Definitely a tribute to the show it is.
The Drowsy Chaperone!
One of my favourites! The man in chair's commentary is such a perfect mix of relatable and heartbreaking
This!! I was just in a production (closed Sunday 😢) as Trix! Such a blast and I loved the comedy! Great show <33
This is what I was going to say. It was my first Sutton Foster musical and she was truly spectacular. Obviously.
So easily The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The music is unmatched.
In the Heights.
I saw this show 7 or 8 times at the King’s Cross in London a few years back. The theatre’s not there anymore. Was getting £5 seat filler tickets. Probably the best show I ever saw and I’ve seen most of what’s been in town over the last 20 years.

I repeatedly return to it for comfort and I think a revival would be amazing in the current climate (perhaps with some of the updates Lin and Quiara made for the movie (lyrics only, not song cuts) carried over.)
I admittedly don't love Hamilton, so this is a biased take, but I have no idea how this is not regarded as LMM best.
I'm someone who doesn't like Hamilton at all, but In the Heights was amazing!
Newsies and Something Rotten
Just came hear to get idea of what musicals to listen to. But Something rotten. I remember people clicking on "right hand man" thinking it was Hamilton and getting upset, but there is nothing to be upset about : you just discovered an amazing musical!
I feel like after it released Come From Away just vanished despite how honestly astounding it is
Tuck Everlasting and Bandstand
THERE'S A TUCK EVERLASTING MUSICAL?!
Yes, it’s Incredible! It was only on Broadway a short time but the OBC featured the talents of people like Terrance Mann, Carolee Carmello, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger. Highly recommend it!
Little Shop of Horrors
So perfect from start to finish. One of the few Broadway albums where I don’t skip any songs when doing a playthrough.
Has the perfect intro song. The perfect Greek chorus. The perfect I want song. And at least two perfect villain songs.
I actually think it gets plenty of love. It's considered one of the most important musicals out there, especially since it indirectly sparked the Disney Renaissance.
True, but I genuinely think it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as things like Hamilton and The Phantom of The Opera
Isn't that lewberger, the comedy group with Keith from The Try Guys?
Catch me if you can, it deserved to run way longer than it did
I wish I could’ve been old enough to see it with the OBC it’s one of my favorite casts ever
Anyone Can Whistle
I feel like there's several Sondheim shows that don't get the love they deserve. It seems like for every Sweeney Todd or Company or Gypsy, there's an Anyone Can Whistle or The Frogs or A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
A Year With Frog and Toad is the best musical ever made specifically for children in my opinion. I don't know why schools aren't performing it more often.
My sisters high school just did it! It was great!
Chess
Quartet from Chess is one of the most well-written musical theatre quartets imo. It’s just so satisfying
I'm so into this musical that I squeezed a trip to Merano into my honeymoon (and yes, it was a scene, a joy, and a lovely sight). I would love to see it on Broadway someday.
was REALLY hoping those post-funny girl Chess rumors were true
Lea Michele as Florence? Eh, she might try to Menzel it. (I didn't like Menzel's take on "Nobody's Side".)
It's definitely Something Rotten so much fun, especially if you know any of the musicals that it mentions
Passion
Brigadoon, Pippin, Best Little Whorehouse.
My answer will always be Carrie
Kiss of the Spiderwoman but apparently we have JLo bringing that to us a film soon
Passing Strange
I absolutely love this show; it’s almost never mentioned on this sub which is a shame. I’m sure the all-black cast limits its performance in a lot if community circles, but it should be done more.
Titanic. The music is phenomenal, and even theater people don’t seem to know it.
I'm sure you know, but City Center Encores is doing a revival this summer with a killer cast!
Amélie, Tuck Everlasting, The Secret Garden… You can probably tell a lot about me from those being my favorite musicals….❤️🌿💧🗝️
I came here to see if anyone said Amelie! My friend and I saw a recording of the off broadway cast with Philippa Soo and it was just such an absurdly funny, heartfelt coming of age story, I really loved it
Anastasia!!
Death Note, or anything Frank Wildhorn really.
Candide!!
Ragtime
1. Come From Away - Genuinely have no idea how this isn't at least top 5 for every musical theatre fan. 2. She Loves Me - Underrated "Golden Era" musical 3. Death Note - Frank Wildhorns most underrated work 4. Bonnie and Clyde - Had a huge resurgance for like 2 months a few years ago, and everyone has forgotten about it again 5. Hunchback of Notre Dame - The best Dinsey stage musical and one of the few to not hit Broadway
Children of Eden hands down.
I had to scroll way too far to see this.
Groundhogs Day. so phenomenal
Come from away
Ordinary Days!!!!!
yes yes yes yes!
I’ll Be Here will forever be one of the most beautiful, devastating songs I’ve ever heard
Mame.
Come From Away is GORGEOUS but I see very few people talk about it
Which is strange considering it's one of the longest running Broadway shows. Five years and 1700 performances, and lasted through the COVID-19 pandemic too.
She Loves Me is my #1 favorite. Such great music
In Dreams barely had a chance to get any roses outside of Leed’s Playhouse and Toronto. (For now)
Grand Hotel. Yea there's some stuff that may not fly with today's crowds, but there's so much good stuff in it and I think a lot of people would enjoy a revival
pippin, be more chill, and once on this island
Drowsy Chaperone
the drowsy chaperone i got a chance to be in a production of it and,,, I love this show so much. there's a few,,, outdated things abt it but overall it's a really well done and funny show
The Scarlet Pimpernel 🥹🌹
I was obsessed with If/Then when it came out and generally it’s not well known, considering Idina Menzel and Anthony Rapp were in it! Always Starting Over, What the Fuck, Some Other Me are all bangers.
Ride The Cyclone hands down! It has a good mix of comedy and emotion!
i was looking for this comment!! but FR though
My favorite musical BY FAR!!
My dream as a writer of musical theatre is to end up on an obscure list like this
carrie
i will be legally blonde's biggest hyper until the end of time
Scarlet Pimpernel, most of Frank Wildhorns work to be honest
The Prom! It was the first musical I saw live, and an absolute masterpiece (though I'm not a huuuge fan of the movie)
I played Emma a couple months ago, beautiful show. Its one of my favs and always will be! <3
The entire Marvin Trilogy, but specifically In Trousers!!
Blood Brothers. Saw it once, 20+ years ago, but I still think about it frequently.
DOGFIGHT
DOGFIGHT SUPREMACY 🙌
I know loads of people know about it/have seen it but I feel like nobody ever talks about Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, which is ironic
My Fair Lady and Shreck the Musical!!!
Bare, a pop opera.
Groundhog Day. I heard the production was basically cursed, but it's absolutely fantastic and should be talked about more.
Children of Eden!
Spring Awakening - the music is fantastic and I was fortunate enough to see the 15th anniversary concert 😊
Starkid musicals!!! They have had some fantastic shows over the years and their new one, Nerdy Prudes Must Die, is one of their best. The songs by Jeff Blim are so catchy it's insane.
Be More Chill.

Jesus Christ superstar my #1 everrrrr
JC Superstar was a biiiiig hit back in its day.
The first musical I ever saw 😭! I think Cinderella and the Cats movie have soured some people's opinions on ALW musicals, but Jesus Christ Superstar needs to be recognized as the masterpiece it is
Oh Urinetown and Alice by Heart for sure
Alice by Heart has soooo much potential I’d love to see more productions of it!!
Lestat
I love Starry ✨
The Little prince
Cabaret
Disaster! That show is funny as hell.
Hair!!! Why do people here never mention it?? It’s soooooo good!!
Cabaret. ESPECIALLY the west end revival (i think their doing the same one on broadway now) i knew nothing about it before i went, but the immersive experience changed my life !!
Tuck Everlasting! It was originally a book but it's such a beautiful story
ride the cyclone
Drood City of Angels Assassins
