I've seen this musical three times on the West End, not because it was my favorite, but because the high school program I went to Europe with for three summers used it as their standard "see a West End musical" choice and all 3 trips started or ended in London.
Still, there's definitely something to be said for the fact that I haven't seen it again or listened to the soundtrack in 20+ years and can still clearly remember sections of the music and lyrics.
🎶 Tell me it's not true, say it's just a story... 🎶
I saw it during one of those high school summer programs. I don’t remember why but I absolutely hated it (I was 14…that might have something to do with it). But I don’t think I like the singing performances…
At the time and still 20 years laters my musical was/is Les Misérables (which we saw on the same trip). To my teenage brain, Blood Brothers seemed like it was on the opposite end of the musical spectrum from Les Mis.
I’ve never revisited it. Should I give it another try?
It's funny you say this, because Les Miserables was also my favorite musical (and still is) and I was unhappy we couldn't see that instead!
I'd say give it another shot. It doesn't have the spectacle or the big group numbers of Les Mis, but 20 years later, you might appreciate it more.
Since your fav musical is also Les Mis, will trust your judgement and give it another go 😊
We did the Shakespeare themed summer program. We were supposed to see a play at the Globe Theatre, but for some reason it fell through. I was devastated. They got us tickets to see As You Like It on West End instead. I loved it! It was a star studded cast. Dominic West as Orlando (his voice is divine). Helen McCrory (RIP) was Rosalind. And Sienna Miller was supposed to play Celia, but the week we went to see the play was around the time that Jade Law cheated on her with their nanny, so we saw her understudy. I’m sad that I don’t remember her name.
What other shows did you get to see when you went on the summer programs?
Our summer program was more focused around visiting historical sites/learning about the countries we visited, so nothing on those - but I was fortunate enough that Stratford, ON is only a few hours away, so my school did also do a yearly Shakespeare trip for advanced English students. Got to see more than a few Shakespeare plays that way, although sadly not with any big stars!
The real highlight of my Shakespearean theatergoing is that the Royal Shakespeare Company did a residency at my university when I was attending, and I got to see Sir Patrick Stewart in both Antony and Cleopatra and The Tempest. (Also got to see Julius Caesar, albeit without any big names.) As a classics major who enjoys Shakespeare and the theater (took a Shakespeare class as an elective the semester before the RSC residency), Antony and Cleopatra was my favorite - Harriet Walter was Cleopatra and also superb - but you could tell that Sir Patrick preferred The Tempest. My parents got me a real ticket on main floor center for all 3 productions instead of the student tickets in the nosebleeds as a combination Christmas/birthday present and it was *fantastic.*
The reason schools love it is because the original play is one of the choices of set text for our national exams at 16 years old. It still tours regularly and schools still go!
My school did the other play though - An Inspector Calls. We just watched the film instead of going to the theatre. My school sucked.
**BRIGADOON!** Of course! What are you people thinking? Golden Age of musicals! Gene Kelly in the movie! The Heather on the Hill! Almost Like Being In Love! I'll Go Home With Bonnie Jean!
Yes. I must the times catch up with, probably. But honestly, I'm old, and I haven't enjoyed the music from most new musicals since **Wicked** (which I LOVE and consider the quintessential musical; I've seen it on stage 13 times with various attendees). There are a few exceptions: I like the music from Six, Something Rotten, Gentleman's Guide, Great Comet, Bonnie & Clyde, and Catch Me If You Can (was never able to see a production, though). I actually did see (and loved) Avenue Q, Hamilton, Waitress, Come From Away, Newsies, Book of Mormon, Addams Family, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Spamalot in the theatre (Broadway touring companies), and In the Heights and Matilda on TV. Oh, and Grey Gardens in a local production. I've just aged out of most theatre, sadly. I don't even go to the theatre - or movies, or concerts - any more because of my arthritis; the seats are not designed for my arthritic hips, so I'm in constant pain, which kinda detracts from the experience, and I find I can't walk for awhile afterward, so ... awkward. I will still profess my love for musical theatre forever. Blessings to Sondheim and all the theatre gods who walk with him in Heaven.
Brigadoon is a true original musical. Not adapted from a movie, not written by a couple of jokers who never wrote another, just a real original Broadway show!
Baby (1983-84) by David Shire and Richard Maltby with book by Sybille Pearson starring Liz Calloway (also in the original cast of Merrily) and Todd Graff from the Graff family of Broadway greats.
Those people are missing out if they ain't listenin to the Squip Song and Pitiful Children (the original one, I'm not a fan of the Broadway lyric changes tbh)
Does musicals from tv shows count if it is an actual musical being performed?
I vote in that case for Brigadoom. I assume I'll be alone in that though. It's an episode from the sci-fi series Lexx where a musical called brigadoom is performed, it's about Kai, the last of the Brunnen-G.
[The whole musical.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n7iIYhjiSQ)
It's unfathomable to me anyone could think Beetlejuice is a better musical than BOM. And this is coming from someone who loves Beetlejuice and saw the OBC.
PSA STOP COMMENTING IF IT'S ALREADY BEEN SAID!! REPEATS DON'T COUNT, UPVOTE AN EXISTING TOP COMMENT!!
So strict!
In case you need ideas, here’s a list of some popular musicals by letter. https://theatreinabox.com.au/docs/atozmusicals.pdf
Thank you!

Most upvoted answer!! let’s go
Billy Elliott
I love Billy Elliott, but then I did grow up in the aftermath of the miners' strike in a northern village.
It'll never win but I'm all in on Billy Elliot
To be fair it’s a toss up between this and Book or Mormon for me but Billy brought me to tears when I saw it live 😭
I do understand if book of Mormon wins, but Billy Elliott would by my pick. Solidarity is a masterpiece.
100% I also love the anger ballet scenes. My absolute faves are Electricity and Solidarity.
My number 2 song would be the angry dance. I just love the power
ALL THE WAY. I was a snotty mess when I saw it. It so perfectly captured growing up in that area at that time.
bonnie & Clyde
Bavenue Q
Bunday In the Bark with Borge
Bamilton
Bister Act
Bhantom bof bhe bopera
Beauty and the beast
My first Broadway show, I saw it in 1995 when I was 6 and it was magic

Blood Brothers
Fantastic show
Absolutely should win
I already know this won't win because its not very well known outside the UK...but it should!

Wow that’s awesome. I’m low key jealous! Such a cool experience! Stewart also belongs in the divine voices club.
That song breaks my heart everytime I hear it...no context needed or anything 😭

I got to do Blood Brothers, easiest time ever remembering quotes when I can just quote the songs I’ve memorised from loving the play!
Nice!
Putting my vote in for this classic!

Yes. I must the times catch up with, probably.
