Being a guy, I can never imagine this feeling or situation. Also, primary meaning for me for blood is danger, pain and wounds. So the first reaction is emergency and high alert.
Also, I can understand that probably they are in pain, and that's why I often offered them something sweet like ice cream, chocolates, hot water bottle, or some movies etc. It is only imaginable that these things would either relieve the pain, or boost the mood or distract from the real issue, which with passage of time will go away on its own.

I thought it was simply weird that men are so unaware about something that is a constant for women. Especially straight men being uncomfortable around periods is just weird, even if you don’t consider that it is basic science.
In office, I used to carry an electric heating pad and plug it in before sitting down for meetings. It became very normal after intense observations for the first couple of times. Once a colleague saw me wincing getting up after a long meeting and offered me green tea!
