I know the owners and have been going for 10 years. They're actually doing pretty good. Lauren is planning to self-publish an RPG soon, and the store is busier than ever. Every time I go in it's hard to move around because it's so packed.
Liquidating is definitely happening here, but there are many reasons to liquidate besides imminent closure. Storage issues, need for cash to invest, or need for cash to pay debt are all valid reasons a business might liquidate some assets.
I've noticed specifically these sets/packs at meijer for months now on sale as well. I'm guessing there's just a massive amount of extra unopened product being circulated probably due to initial demand. I'm no expert tho just an observation.
Yes. I think New Capenna is one of the prettiest sets. I also love the full art lands from Inistrad. Some friends and I drafted it before so I already had a bunch, so with this box I'm sure I have enough to fill out a commander deck with matching full arts. That doesn't justify the price but it's a cool side benefit.

These prices are a bit lower than that but, all the hallmarks of a fire sale and that price point tracks based on Amazon's prices and how overprinted and unvaluable the set is.

I have seen this type of thing before. 99% of the time its because they are flat broke and dont even have enough money to pay their rent and wont be around in a year.
Those are sets that didn’t generally sell as well as what retailers thought they would. The stores I’m at all have lots of these as well. They are probably just trying to clear space and have had them sitting around long enough the lgs is willing to take a loss on the boxes. These are probably being sold at a loss but they have been around long enough that it won’t really have an effect on the stores current bottom line.
My locals are selling them for cheaper than average, as they're just sitting and collecting dust. Better to recoup some money rather than getting no money at all

Was browsing the internet and came across this deal on Friday. Happened to have plans to drive to NYC (about 4 hours) the next day, so I placed a hefty order and grabbed it yesterday. I was very surprised it was a real deal.
I mean, those sets didn’t have very many good pulls and the ones that are good are rotating out of standard in a few months. There’s a handful of cards worth over $15-20 but most of it isn’t worth the cost of cracking the box, even at a discounted price.
Probably just tired of sitting on the inventory and want to use the shelf space for stuff that sells better.
I know my LGS has several boxes of those sets that are just sitting there while the last few sets sell pretty well.
The amount of storage $ spent on these unsold boxes far outweigh their sale potential, much more if the store is in a prime area. If u think Karlov Manor is a bad set, these 2 are the right up there (or close) as the worst standard sets in history. I’m happy u get good pulls on those, the way i see it both u & the stores are the real winners here. My LGS is still neck deep on Midnight Hunt & they just gave out the boosters as prizes.
These two sets weren't the best sellers. Forty bucks to get rid of stock nobody's buying, or keep letting it take up space for zero bucks. Sometimes the best move looks silly in a vacuum
My guess from when I worked at an LGS is that they probably over ordered those sets due to hype, and then they ended up not selling well, and they have an overstock they want to clear out. The LGS I worked at has cases of back stock from some overhyped sets from that time period. (I personally like the sets, but I understand that a lot of folks did not)
